Katy Perry Says ‘E.T.’ Video Doesn’t ‘Play It Safe’

Clip’s on-air debut at 7:53 p.m. ET will be followed by live ‘MTV First’ interview with Perry on MTV.com. By MTV News staff Katy Perry Photo: MTV News When Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video , featuring Kanye West, premieres on MTV and MTV.com on Thursday, fans should expect a decidedly cinematic experience. “With Teenage Dream, the record in whole, I knew I wanted to give so many different flavors, so many different ideas, and just make a different ‘movie’ for each song,” Perry told MTV News of her latest album, which has already spawned clips for “California Gurls,” “Firework” and the title track. “I feel like I’ve done that.” The “E.T.” video will premiere at noon Thursday on MTV.com, VH1.com and LogoTV.com. Then, “MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ ” will bow on air at 7:53 p.m. ET before tossing to an MTV.com live stream, featuring MTV News correspondent Sway’s exclusive chat with Perry, an interview with director Floria Sigismondi and reaction from Perry’s fans. Perry has noticed a shift in public opinion about her with the release of each Teenage Dream video, and she’s thinking “E.T.” will be no exception. “It’s interesting to see a lot of the commentary that goes along with growth,” she marveled. “People are like, ‘OK, I like her,’ finally, or like, ‘Damn, I hate to admit it, but we’re on the Katy Perry train,’ which is really exciting, and i feel like I worked really hard for that. “I knew starting with ‘I Kissed a Girl’ that it might have taken a little bit longer to get everybody just onboard the Katy Perry train, I guess,” she added. “But now, I’m having so much fun and I get to be so creative and try different things and expand, and I never play it safe — in any way, really.” Don’t miss the premiere of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video, featuring Kanye West, at 7:53 p.m. ET Thursday on MTV, followed by our live “MTV First” interview with Katy Perry on MTV.com! My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On ‘Sing It For Japan’

Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Samir Hussein/ Getty Images My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity version of their song “Sing,” with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause. The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they’ll then compile into a video to be paired with the song. “We’d like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. … Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with ‘#SINGItForJapan’ written on it, or anything else you can dream up,” guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band’s official site. “From what we’ve seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don’t be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that’s great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them.” Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag. “After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news,” he wrote. “And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, ‘SINGItForJapan,’ where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way.” The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s no news on just when the band’s new version of “Sing” will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance’s official site . Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ Video To Premiere Thursday On MTV

On-air debut at 7:53 p.m. ET will be followed by live ‘MTV First’ interview with Perry on MTV.com! By MTV News staff Katy Perry in her “E.T.” music video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry’s much-anticipated “E.T.” video will land Thursday exclusively on MTV and MTV.com. The video — directed by Floria Sigismondi and featuring none other than Kanye West — will first premiere at noon on MTV.com, VH1.com and LogoTV.com. “MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ ” will bow on air at 7:53 p.m. ET, and then tosses to MTV.com’s live stream, direct from the MTV Newsroom, featuring MTV News correspondent Sway’s exclusive interview with Perry, an interview with Sigismondi, and reaction from Perry’s fans. “MTV First” caps off a full day of Katy-related content across all MTV platforms. Beginning on Thursday morning, MTV and MTV Hits will feature blocks of Perry’s best-known videos, and at 5 p.m. ET, MTV’s “The Seven” will feature an interview with Perry. And just before the on-air premiere of “E.T.,” fans will be treated to an exclusive introduction from Katy herself. On Friday — the day after the video’s premiere — TeenNick, Logo and Tr3s will spotlight the video as part of TeenNick’s “Obsess This” music block, Logo’s “NewNowNext” and Tr3s’ “Fresca Video.” And though the premiere is still three days away, promotion for the clip has already begun: Not only has Perry been tweeting photos of her fans after they’ve been “abducted” by extraterrestrials, but now it seems that both her website and Facebook page have also been taken over by the same aliens, who are communicating with fans in a bizarre written language. Don’t miss the premiere of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video, featuring Kanye West, at 7:53 p.m. ET Thursday on MTV, followed by our live “MTV First” interview with Katy Perry on MTV.com! Selena Gomez Says Her Next Album Is ‘More Mature’

‘It is very different, and I’m growing up,’ she says of the yet-untitled summer record. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Selena Gomez isn’t a little girl anymore. She’s 18, in a high-profile romance and has left Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” behind for less tween fare. Her next step also includes her forthcoming album and the empowering first single “Who Says.” “We haven’t decided [a] title [yet for the album] and we’re dealing with the album artwork, ’cause it is very different and I’m growing up,” she told MTV News. “It’s a lot more mature.” Gomez admits that she really loves stepping out of the Disney shadow to grow up in a big way on this album. “I’m growing,” she said. “I’m constantly changing, and it’s fun being able to express that for my fans. So this album is a huge rave; it really is. It’s funky, it’s different. I’m liking it.” The album will not feature any duets or collaborations, but Gomez does have a wish list just in case she feels the need to throw someone on one of the tracks between now and the summer release date. “All of it is pretty much me,” she said of the yet-untitled album. “I love Bruno Mars; I’m obsessed with him. I love B.o.B. I love Adele’s new record; it’s insane. I would love to even just meet her.” Gomez has previously shared that “there’s a lot more depth [on this album].” She has tracks on it that fully express the wide range of emotions she feels as a young woman in the spotlight. “There is one [song] that I’m completely in love with, and it was written by Pixie Lott, who I am obsessed with,” she said. “And it’s my mom’s favorite song. It’s very sweet. It’s kind of a ballad, but not really. It’s basically about living in the moment; it’s about enjoying right now. I’m very much enjoying right now. I’m in a good place.” What are you expecting from Selena’s next album? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Selena Gomez Related Artists Selena Gomez

‘American Idol’ Is TV’s Top-Earning Series

Show raked in $7.1 million per half hour in 2010, while ‘Two and a Half Men’ comes in at #2. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson Photo: Tony Duran/ FOX Last year was a rocky one for “American Idol.” From the turmoil on the judging panel with uncomfortable short-timer Ellen DeGeneres (and the firing of Kara DioGuardi) to lackluster winner Lee DeWyze and the eventual departure of lead judge Simon Cowell, you’d think “Idol” would have suffered as a result. But, according to Forbes magazine, not only did “Idol” retain its ratings crown in 2010, it was also the biggest moneymaker on TV. The show brought in an astounding $7.11 million per half hour for the Fox network according to estimates tallied by the financial magazine. As big a number as that is, the figure was actually a 12 percent drop from 2009, but still enough to top the Forbes list of TV cash cows. Despite fears that the nearly wholesale changes on the judging panel and the debut of untested TV stars Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez at the desk might throw the ratings for “Idol” off this season, so far the show is holding steady. After initial ratings slumps in the audition episodes, the show is now down just 1 percent for the season and appears to be rebounding to its former heights. “Idol” was far-and-away the list leader on the Forbes tally, followed by the troubled “Two and a Half Men,” whose 2010 shows earned $2.89 million per half hour in what will now be remembered as former star Charlie Sheen’s final full season. Forbes predicted it will be hard to keep those numbers up without polarizing star Sheen, whom producers are reportedly looking to replace. The rest of the list includes: “Desperate Housewives” ($2.74 million), “Grey’s Anatomy” ($2.67 million), “Dancing With the Stars” ($2.67 million), “Lost” ($2.60 million), “The Big Bang Theory” ($2.50 million), “24” ($2.45 million), “Private Practice” ($2.32 million) and “Mike & Molly” ($2.11 million). Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson Talk ‘Wackiest’ ‘American Idol’ Judge

‘Wow, you haven’t seen the side of Jennifer [Lopez] that I’ve seen,’ Tyler reveals to MTV News. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson Photo: MTV News Anyone who’s been watching the bright and shiny new season of “American Idol” would likely agree that the addition of new judge Steven Tyler has added a wacky and even more unpredictable element to the show. MTV News caught up with the man in question, as well as fellow judge Randy Jackson, at the “American Idol” event at the PaleyFest, an annual event that celebrates TV’s biggest and brightest names both in front of and behind the camera. While there, we asked them which judge they thought was the wackiest. Not surprisingly, the duo veered on- and off-topic, which made for an entertaining, if random chat. “Ryan is the weirdest,” Jackson said. “And he has a little bit of a B.O. going on, but oh, we shouldn’t talk about that. What do you think of the judges, Steven?” “Wow, I mean, you haven’t seen the side of Jennifer [Lopez] that I’ve seen,” Tyler said. “I knew it existed when I watched ‘The Back-Up Plan’ and I said I would only do it if she did, because I’d already met [Randy],” Tyler explained of seeing Lopez’s romantic comedy. “And when I met him at lunch, after five minutes, I thought all the cameras in the world could be rolling so I knew I’d jump into this. But Jennifer, oh my God — look out.” Tyler went on to say that the upcoming slew of live shows don’t make him nervous or worried in any way. “I’m all right with it. I’m having a blast!” he said. “Don’t forget I’m addicted to adrenaline: anything that scares me, I love it. I love it. I love blushing and being told I’m wrong.” What do you think of Steven Tyler’s “Idol” judging skills so far? Tell us in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Finalist Casey Abrams ‘Feeling Really Good’ After Hospitalization

Singer was released from hospital after receiving blood transfusions for ulcerative colitis. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” Finalist Casey Abrams (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Casey Abrams is back in the game. The “American Idol” front-runner, who missed out on Thursday’s results show because he was hospitalized for a flare-up of ulcerative colitis, posted a message to fans on Monday announcing that he is feeling better and will be ready to go for Wednesday night’s performance show. According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams made the statements at an “Idol” panel on Monday at the 28th annual PaleyFest, where he took the stage along with eight of his fellow finalists (minors Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Thia Megia were doing schoolwork). “I’m feeling really good,” he said. The 20-year-old Illinois singer reportedly received blood transfusions last week, during his second hospitalization of the season. “I thought I was actually going to make it,” he said about last Thursday’s show, “but I had to stay behind. It was fun and everyone waved at me, and I felt really supported by everyone, and I loved watching.” Abrams also said he “hated” seeing Ashthon Jones go home on Thursday and was bummed to miss out on the first group performance of the finals. “It was awesome seeing the group performance … [and] thank you, Stefano [Langone] and Haley [Reinhart], for taking my part.” Earlier this season, on February 23, Abrams was rushed to the ER after complaining about stomach pains and almost missed the subsequent taping of the top-12 men’s performances, which potentially would have eliminated him from the competition before the finals. ‘American Idol’ Music Director Talks Auto-Tune, Live Shows

‘Auto-Tune is absolutely a no-no in this show,’ Ray Chew tells MTV News of manipulating the voices of ‘Idol’ hopefuls. By Kara Warner “American Idol” top 13 Photo: FOX Coming into the shiny new season of “American Idol,” the show’s producers made it clear to the viewing masses that season 10 would be a revamped version of the ratings juggernaut. But along with the competition show’s many changes plenty has remained the same, in particular, the show’s stance on all-live singing, all the time. When MTV News caught up with new “Idol” music director Ray Chew recently, we asked him to address those Auto-Tune rumblings that seem to creep into critical discussions and/or Internet message boards each season, and whether it’s even possible to incorporate the device on the show. “No Auto-Tune,” Chew told us. “This is a [singing] contest, so that is absolutely a no-no. Plus the show, it’s happening live, so Auto-Tune would be a process that you’d either have to use globally or selectively with parts,” he explained. “All the vocals that you hear are live, there is no kind of manipulation of anything and auto-tune is absolutely a no-no in this show.” Another point of contention — also mentioned in previous seasons — is the judges, contestants and studio audience experience the sound during live tapings of “American Idol,” versus the version that TV audiences hear at home. (Former judge Simon Cowell, for example, used to make comments that the version he heard in the studio was different from the one he watched on his TV.) Chew assured us that the “Idol” team goes to “great lengths” to ensure the sound quality is the best it can be. “I know that they’ve been aware of comments like that,” Chew revealed. “And we’ve gone to great lengths to improve the audio production and the sonic quality of what happens coming out of the final TV mix,” he said. Before signing on to “Idol,” Chew worked as the musical director for a myriad of live-music performance events, including the BET Awards, the Inaugural Ball, as well as performances by artists like Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Prince and Aretha Franklin.
