Justin Bieber ‘Never Say Never’ Ad To Air During ‘Glee’ Super Bowl 2011 Episode

Who says that young girls don’t care about Super Bowl Sunday? This year there’s a big reason for tweens, teens and non-football fans to get in on the action. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new spot for Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” 3-D flick will run during the super special post-Super Bowl episode of “Glee.” The 30-second commercial is set to air during the February 6 episode of the hit Fox comedy. The film opens one week later, on Valentine’s Day weekend. THR further reports that the ad will be shown during “Glee” and not the Super Bowl proper since the film’s target demographic is more likely to tune in to the musical TV show than the big game. This is not the first time Bieber has teamed up with a major sporting event to support a release. During Game 3 of last year’s World Series, the teen pop star debuted a mini-music video for the unplugged version of his song “Never Say Never” to promote his acoustic album, My Worlds Acoustic. Bieber’s flick isn’t the only movie taking advantage of the Super Bowl’s massive viewership. Several blockbusters will air commercials on Fox sometime during the evening, whether it’s preshow, during the game or, in Bieber’s case, postshow. It reportedly costs about $3 million for 30 seconds of airtime on the big night. Variety reports that the movies “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “Super 8,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Cowboys and Aliens,” “Priest,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Just Go With It,” “Battle: Los Angeles,” “Limitless,” “Rango” and “The Eagle” all will have commercials broadcast during Super Bowl Sunday.

Steven Tyler: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

As Aerosmith frontman kicks off TV gig, we look back on the rocker’s decades-long highs and lows as part of iconic band. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Steven Tyler has seen it all. The famously loud and proud singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith has experienced the highest highs of the music business, as well as the deepest depths of career (and personal) misery. In other words, he’s perfectly qualified to be a judge on “American Idol.” Though his selection as part of the new three-judge panel on America’s favorite reality singing show was somewhat of a left-field surprise to his bandmates, the program’s fans and many critics, Tyler seems excited and enthusiastic about the gig as season 10 gets under way Wednesday night. He recently admitted that he hadn’t really watched the show before because of his busy schedule with the Boston-bred hard rock icons (and, ahem, the occasional trip to rehab), but Tyler told The Daily Beast that he sees his “Idol” run as a new wrinkle in his four-decade-plus career. “Television is just an extension of what I’ve always done,” he said. “I don’t think people have seen that Italian side of me, the side of me that can work a room like nobody’s business. It’s what I am. It’s something that people haven’t seen unless there was a party backstage after a show because that ominous person that’s out of his mind onstage is not the same guy that’s sitting in front of cameras.” He’s been everywhere, seen everything and lived to tell about it. Clearly, if there’s anyone who knows what it takes to be a star — and to have enduring success — it’s Tyler. He formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970, along with guitarist and longtime foil Joe Perry, winning over a loyal fanbase thanks to their white-hot, blues-drenched live sets and Tyler’s magnetic stage presence. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1972 and began an ultra-successful run that spanned the remainder of the decade, releasing classics albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, along with iconic singles like “Dream On,” “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” Long story short, the success led to excess and the band limped into the ’80s without Perry. A career resurgence in the late ’80s and early ’90s put Aerosmith back on top of their game with a new generation of radio-friendly hits and the bandmates’ newfound sobriety. In the 2000s, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and release albums. But in 2009, during an Aerosmith gig at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, Tyler fell off the stage into the crowd, leading to the cancellation of their summer tour and then a string of rumors that he’d left the band to pursue a solo career. Yet, despite all of that, Aerosmith still hit the road again this past summer, with Tyler very much onboard after another stint in rehab. So, why, after one of the most successful runs in rock history, would the frontman head to “American Idol”? Sirius satellite radio host Howard Stern asked his old friend that question on Tuesday morning (January 18), and Tyler said it made perfect sense to him. “It was just taking something else other than Aerosmith, it doesn’t mean the band’s over,” said Tyler, 62, noting that last summer’s tour was one of the best he could remember, but that he needed a bit of a break to help him heal from his chronic foot condition. “I needed a rest for [my foot] and it was just something else I could get into. I wanted to see if this would be a good fit.” Setting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz and, after whittling down 700 contestants to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show. When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” After seeing a couple dozen singers who blew him away, Tyler admitted that he’s looking for the whole package: vocals, songwriting ability and the originality that marks a star. “I just thought, ‘What the f—? I get to sit next to J. Lo? … I’m looking for the [Janis] Joplin, the Christina Aguilera. Someone that’s not being Vocoded and trimmed and primped and done up. I’m looking for that natural person that can go in and sing … and the times that I found one, I teared up out there.” As for whether the show will break up the band, which has endured epic battles with drugs, jealousy and managerial interference, Tyler said, simply, hell no. ” ‘Idol’ ‘s gonna take this band up 10 notches!” he promised. This Week In ‘American Idol’: From Premiere To ‘Pants On The Ground’

We take a look back at moments in ‘Idol’ history before season 10 kicks off. By Katie Byrne Kara DioGuardi and Katrina “Bikini Girl” Darrell onstage at the 2009 “American Idol” finale Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images/FOX To celebrate the 10th season of “American Idol” (does that make anyone else feel ancient?), we’re digging into the MTV News archives each week to take a look at monumental moments in “Idol” history. Back in 2002, Kelly Clarkson was just a gleam in America’s eye, not the chart-topping pop/rock diva she’s become. Will the new season — which kicks off Wednesday night (January 19) — find just as stellar a superstar? Only time will tell. Until then, let’s take a look back at This Week in “Idol”: 2010: General Larry Platt Drops Trou Of all the original songs heard during the audition rounds, none made a bigger impact on pop culture than General Larry Platt’s “Pants on the Ground.” At the time, we declared that the ode to saggy drawers “was no ‘I Am Your Brother.’ ” Did “I Am Your Brother” get covered by Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young and teach Justin Bieber the value of a belt ? Not so much. 2009: Kara DioGuardi vs. Bikini Girl During Kara DioGuardi’s first night on the show , “Idol” viewers were wondering what kind of impression she would leave. Their questions were answered when the new judge got into the cattiest of all catfights with Katrina “Bikini Girl” Darrell, an auditioner wearing nothing more than a two-piece who fancied herself the next Mariah Carey. DioGuardi defended her claws-out attack on the “Idol” wannabe but also gave Darrell props for self-promotion. “To her credit, she’s gotten so much attention. It was probably a good call to wear the bikini at the end of the day,” DioGuardi said at the time. “But we wouldn’t be talking about the bikini if she killed the song.” 2008: Not-So-Undiscovered Talent “American Idol” has always prided itself in giving ordinary people a shot at an extraordinary music career. But what if the “Idol” contestants weren’t so ordinary? Heading into season seven of the reality juggernaut, fans were outraged to learn that two early favorites — Kristy Lee Cook and Carly Smithson — both had previous recording contracts. Executive producer Ken Warwick defended the hopefuls’ professional pasts : “The truth of the matter is, there are too many people who come on to audition for us to go into all their backgrounds. We judge it purely on, when they walk through the door, if they have a record company attached to them already, then we’re not interested. If they have a management contract, they’ve got to lose it. … We take them on the merits of ‘Can they sing or not?’ ” But that explanation didn’t cut it for some “Idol” watchers . “I don’t think I’m liking the direction ‘AI’ is heading,” one fan told MTV News in January 2008. “What happened to undiscovered talent like Kellie Pickler and Elliott Yamin, that are regular people with side jobs and school and stuff?” 2006: Brittenum Twins in Double Trouble Terrell and Derrell Brittenum are probably best remembered for their disruptive Hollywood Week appearance, but just after their initial auditions, the media caught wind of their equally disruptive criminal past. As it turned out, Terrell Brittenum was in jail when America was introduced to his smooth singing voice, and Derrell was wanted by police. Both were charged in Rockdale County, Georgia, with forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud when the brothers allegedly used another man’s identity to buy a car. Legal issues or no, the twins’ “Idol” chances were done in by their Hollywood Week tantrums. 2003: Dunkleman, Out Brian who? Original “Idol” co-host Brian Dunkleman chose to leave the show after its first season to pursue a career in stand-up comedy and acting, leaving Ryan Seacrest to man the ship solo — and create a media empire in the meantime. Dunkleman has since appeared on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club” and admitted to Howard Stern that his “Idol” exit might not have been the best move. 2002: This … Is “American Idol” Nine years ago, a little singing competition judged by a prickly British guy, a behind-the-scenes music producer and a has-been pop star premiered. It had “surefire hit” written all over it, right? Well, not really. But the show gained steam each week, powered by the raw talent of Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini and Tamyra Gray and the “how mean can he get?” critiques of Simon Cowell. A national sensation was born, and we haven’t looked back since. [ Editor’s note: Sure, the show premiered in June, not January, but we can’t leave out the biggest “Idol” moment of them all! ] Will the latest “Idol” makeover keep it trucking for another 10 years or stop it dead in its tracks? We’ll have to wait until next year’s This Week in “Idol” to find out … Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Robert Pattinson Says ‘Water For Elephants’ Felt Like ‘Big Movie’

‘It felt totally different from doing something within the ‘Twilight’ world,’ he tells MTV News of stretching beyond vampire role. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in “Water for Elephants” Photo: Fame Pictures For all of the Robert Pattinson fans counting down the days until your favorite actor hits the big screen again, know that there’s now just about three months (94 days, to be exact) until the “Twilight” hunk’s next movie, “Water for Elephants,” opens. When MTV News caught up with Pattinson at Sunday’s Golden Globes (he co-presented the award for Best Foreign Film), we asked whether he thought “Elephants” was a big stepping stone for him, acting-wise. “I think so,” he said. “It definitely felt like I was doing a big movie when I was doing it and it felt totally different from doing something within the ‘Twilight’ world because now it just seems so familiar, the ‘Twilight’ stuff. It’s just like going to a normal job, doing that,” he explained of playing vampire Edward Cullen in the franchise. Pattinson’s “Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon told MTV News recently that she couldn’t help but agree with millions of fans about one thing: “He is extraordinarily attractive,” she told us. “I’m not gonna lie.” Witherspoon shares a kiss with Rpattz in the upcoming film and a new photo of the two in a lip-lock may make more than a few “Twilight” fans jealous. But Witherspoon was quick to add that Pattinson is attractive both inside — and out. “Robert is such a great guy from a great family,” she told us last month. “That’s the thing that’s so funny. He’s not really this bad boy; he’s just a great guy and really worked hard on ‘Water for Elephants.’ He really worked long hours, long days. He looks totally different in the movie.” Are you looking forward to how Reese compares to KStew as an onscreen leading lady to RPattz? Tell us in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Experts Weigh In On New Season

‘I hope that it can be, if not a train wreck, then at least not boring,’ Entertainment Weekly ‘s Annie Barrett tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson Photo: Tony Duran/ FOX In some ways, the 10th season of “American Idol” is a whole new show. With legendary meanie judge Simon Cowell not on hand to offer up his cutting putdowns for the first time in the show’s history and Jennie-come-lately panelists Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres off the panel as well, there’s a chance for “Idol” to reboot after a lackluster season nine that saw ratings slip. There are quite a few changes in store , many of which have gotten professional “Idol” watchers excited for the show for the first time in a long time. When the new season boots up Wednesday night (January 19), MTV News’ “Idol” expert and “Idol in 60 Seconds” host Jim Cantiello said he’ll be even more amped up than he usually is (which is super-duper amped up). “I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for ‘Idol’ to start,” said Cantiello, who will host the live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon” right after “Idol” airs, at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.com. “There’s a lot on the line for the show, with Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’ waiting in the wings. ‘Idol’ producers are no dummies. They know if they don’t become part of America’s water-cooler buzz each week that their show is officially done. I’m sure they’ve painstakingly cast the show and truly kept their eyes peeled for the best talent out there, not just the best backstories. After nine seasons, America is burnt out. They’re ready to shake things up, and I, for one, cannot wait.” As much as he’s going to miss Cowell’s acerbic wit, Cantiello said he’s really looking forward to new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. “I can’t wait to see the insane energy Steven brings to the table,” he said. “He’s going to make for some great live TV. And then there’s Lopez, who I imagine being deadly serious. I’m thinking business suits, furrowed brow. She’s going to want to be taken seriously, especially next to crazy Steven.” After a few seasons of lackluster performers and stagnant ratings, Entertainment Weekly “Idol” writer Annie Barrett said she’s just looking forward to what feels like a whole new show. “It will have to be, because there’s no Simon,” she said. “I have no idea what to expect, but I hope that it can be, if not a train wreck, then at least not boring. Without someone to be the villain, it’s great if they all get along, but will that work on TV? Will it be compelling?” Barrett said she’d love it, frankly, if it was a train wreck, if only because it would make the show more interesting. But she’ll definitely miss Cowell, who for her was the main reason to watch the show in the past. “He was so adept at taking down people and everything he said got to the real heart of what was wrong with that person,” she said. “If there’s no one to do that and it’s all sugarcoated, I will be disappointed.” Both Barrett and Cantiello said they were a bit concerned about the show’s decision to drop the age limit down to 15. “I definitely don’t think the show needs younger contestants,” Barrett said. “It’s already pretty painful to watch some teenagers who are so expertly molded into reality-show creatures … it can be kind of creepy. … I don’t think ‘Idol’ was hurting for more youth.” Cantiello was also worried about the new youth movement, noting that some of the 16-year-old contestants “really choked” on live TV after making it into the top 12. “Opening the doors to 15-year-olds may only exacerbate that problem,” he said. “As much as they want to find the next [Justin] Bieber, they better figure out a way to ensure that the kids don’t crack under the pressure.” There was also some concern that the two new superstar judges might distract from the promised return to a focus on the contestants. “My biggest hope is that ‘Idol’ finds one-of-a-kind talent this season,” Cantiello said. “Ellen DeGeneres proved that a big star on the judges’ panel does not necessarily ensure a must-see ‘Idol.’ The show lives and dies by the contestants it highlights. If they don’t find the most compelling, the most interesting and the most talented group of singers, the show is going to be as culturally relevant as ‘Skating With the Celebrities.’ ” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET.
