Hide Ya Kids, Hide Ya Wife: Teenage Gangbanger To Be Tried As An Adult After Murking Mother and Child

Damn this sounds like the kind of story you would see in a LA gang flick. Since when did gangbanging in New York become cool!?!? The feds are prosecuting a teen gang member as an adult in the execution-style slayings of a young Long Island woman and her 2-year-old son, the Daily News has learned. A Salvadoran member of the notorious MS-13 gang, who was 17 years old at the time, lured a mother and her child to a Central Islip industrial park last February and, in the coldest of cold-blooded murders, they were shot in the head, the feds say. A judge gave prosecutors the unusual go-ahead to bring murder in aid of racketeering charges against the thug – similar to what they would slap a mobster with for carrying out a hit, court papers reveal. “It is hard to imagine a more compelling case for transfer to adult status,” Federal Judge Joseph Bianco wrote in his ruling. “The juvenile justice system, including the limited sentencing options…is simply ill-equipped and woefully insufficient under the circumstances of this case, to adequately address in the interest of justice these most grave charges.” WHY did this deranged son-of-a-b*tch execute these kids you ask? After she had a falling-out with the shooter, Argueta asked members of the L.A.-based 18th Street Gang, a rival to his MS-13 with tentacles across America, to beat him up. Both are Latino gangs. She gave her ex-beau’s address in Suffolk County to local members of the 18th St. Gang posse. The ex told the 17-year-old MS-13 member about the beef and they decided Argueta and her toddler, Diego, must die, the feds allege. Argueta was shot in the head and the chest; little Diego was shot twice in the head. Gangbanging is stupid enough as is, but killing women and children over a lover’s quarrel…we gotta do better people. Source

Demi Lovato Will Not Star In ‘The Avengers’

Disney starlet was rumored to be up for a role in the all-star superhero film. By James Dinh Demi Lovato Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for PCA Demi Lovato still has her 2011 touring plan , but one gig the teen sensation doesn’t have on her agenda is a starring role in “The Avengers.” Contrary to reports, the 18-year-old singer/actress will not be featured in the film about a team of Marvel superheroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. THR reports that sources inside Lovato’s and Marvel’s camps are “denying across the board” that the “Camp Rock” star is involved in any way in the all-star comic book adaptation, which is tentatively due in 2012. Part of the difficulty in hiring the actress is that the Joss Whedon-directed film will begin shooting in spring 2011 and the starlet is still undergoing her stay at a medical treatment center for “emotional and physical issues.” Despite the circulating Lovato rumor, Marvel may still be on the lookout for another female actress to join the male-heavy cast. As of now, “The Avengers” superhero lineup includes Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Things have been looking up for the “Sonny With a Chance” star. Not only did the songstress come to an agreement with dancer Alex Welch, whom she allegedly punched before leaving her joint tour with the Jonas Brothers, but the Disney star was also able to spend some time with her family on Christmas Day . She was spotted with her family on the holiday getting food near her treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois. Lady Gaga’s 2010 Looks, From Lacy Gowns To The Meat Dress

Singer made headlines for her fashions throughout the year. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images This may always be remembered as the year that Lady Gaga wore a meat dress to the VMAs , but the singer wore more than meat in 2010. As one of the year’s most stylish celebrities, Gaga managed to make headlines for her fashions, be they weird or beautiful. (Click for photos of Gaga’s best looks of 2010.) She wore hats made of telephones , semi-nude bodysuits, dresses that looked like they were modeled on planets , lots of bikinis (even one made of meat ), mirrors, sunglasses, masks and really anything your fashionista heart could desire. She took risks, and at times, even when she was dressed more conventionally, still looked edgy and completely herself. As the face of the MAC Viva Glam campaign, Gaga hit the trail alongside pop icon Cyndi Lauper to spread the word about the charity. During an event in London, Gaga donned all-black lace, including a bodysuit and tights. But she took the fitted, demure frock and amped up the style by including a voluminous hat-and-mask combination. Gaga once again wore lace, this time white, to the Almay concert to celebrate the Rainforest Fund. The look included a bodice, a bouffant and a flowery hair clip. Gaga wore several memorable looks to the VMAs , but it was her most sedate that was the most traditionally stylish. Her leather Armani-designed gown might have looked silly on anyone else, thanks to its pointy bustier, but if anyone can pull off points and a Mohawk, it’s Gaga. The singer also displayed her keen eye for fashion on the streets. While out in London in October, Gaga went boho chic rocking a gray and blue wig, tiered pale-blush gown and sunglasses. Meanwhile, in Paris months later, Gaga looked refined in a blush- and lavender-hued Victorian-style gown that she paired with sunglasses and a beehive. Which Gaga look was your fave? Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug. Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Der

Eminem Ruled 2010 — And Here’s How

Rapper rose from ashes of disappointing album to top of the charts and 10 Grammy nominations. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It’s fitting that Eminem is planning to return to the big screen next year in the “8 Mile”-inspired boxing film “Southpaw.” Because like Rocky after he was counted down and out so many times in that famous pugilist movie serial, Marshall Mathers seemed like he’d run out of gas in 2009 only to come storming all the way back, and then some, in 2010 to post one of his biggest and baddest years to date. At a time when younger artists like Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Lady Gaga are relying on social media, a dizzying blitz of promotional appearances and concerts, and a nonstop hype machine to keep their careers stoked, Eminem’s path back to the top of the musical heap was decidedly old-school: He released a great album in Recovery that emotionally connected with fans thanks to some of the most hook-heavy songs of his career while maintaining an elusive persona that kept them guessing. “On Recovery, he was really able to tap into the emotive 2002 stuff that people loved in ‘8 Mile,’ ” said Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever. “And I think that the fact that he’s not tech-savvy or any of that stuff really doesn’t hurt him because he’s able to cultivate a little bit of a mystery about himself and his comings and goings. That exclusivity creates more value to his limited presence.” While songs like mega first single “Not Afraid” and the inescapable Rihanna hookup “Love the Way You Lie” were getting wall-to-wall spins at radio, Em made only a few promotional appearances, played just a handful of dates — including the lauded Home and Home shows with Jay-Z — and managed to keep that air of inscrutability about himself while putting up the best sales figures for any album released in 2010. The less you saw of him, the more you wanted to see him. “I think it kind of benefited because [of] the whole backstory behind the album,” Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, former executive editor of The Fader, said about the drama surrounding Slim Shady’s second comeback attempt after five years in drug-induced exile and 2009’s so-so reception for Relapse. “And his comeback from a bad album … the whole thing with the pills, and I think it kind of lent to his mystery. There’s something to be said for rappers who have a trillion Twitter followers but at the same time you kind of don’t want to be able to say whatever you want to your favorite rapper. I think that he kind of kept his integrity in the way that he needed to as an older rapper.” Putting out a barrage of cameo verses has been the go-to move for up-and-comers like Drake and Nicki Minaj as a way to establish their brand. But Marshall borrowed that same new-school page and made it feel classic by being very selective about which songs he lent his voice to. And, almost without exception, every choice he made was an instant classic, from his killer verse on Drake’s “Forever” to a solid duet with Lil Wayne on “Drop the World,” some tasty bars on B.o.B’s “Airplanes” and a nod to the new kids on the block on Nicki’s “Roman’s Revenge.” Most of his peers seem to believe that more is more — more endorsements, more products, more interviews, more guests on their tracks — even as Em came off as the wily veteran who picks his high-percentage shots while the rest of the squad is firing off endless jumpers. “When Eminem went away, the feeling of like, ‘Well, that whole market’s going away. All those people, they’re just dispersing off into the ether and no one’s gonna be ready for him when he’s ready to come back,’ ” said New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica of the excitement that greeted the rapper’s return to form. “And what I think you realize this year is that all those people are like sleeper cells and all got activated. All of a sudden, ‘Oh, Eminem’s back. It’s OK to buy his CD again. I didn’t have anyone I feel like I wanted to buy for the last two or three years; now I feel like I can commit to Eminem.’ ” What also became clear this year, Caramanica said, is that unlike flash-in-the-pan pop rappers or mainstream acts whose audiences don’t grow with them as they mature, Eminem’s fans have been loyal, even as he’s picked up a whole new generation of followers thanks to his more accessible new songs. The evidence of that trend can be seen in the fact that, months after its release, Recovery was still routinely hanging around the top 20, if not top 10, on the Billboard albums chart, an indication that new fans were being brought onboard every week. That slow and steady, measured approach clearly paid off, as Em won two VMAs (off of eight nominations) in September and ended the year by loading up with a leading 10 Grammy nominations and a #2 spot on MTV News’ Man of the Year countdown. You can be sure when the Grammys are handed out in February, Marshall’s name will be mentioned a few times, because if there’s anything the Recording Academy (and, let’s face it, all of America) loves, it’s a comeback. Sarah Palin Takes Swipe at Michelle Obama Again

Sarah Palin really does not appreciate Michelle Obama’s campaign to keep America’s youth from becoming morbidly obese down the line. Stupid government! Having already lambasted Michelle over her childhood nutrition initiative, the mighty caribou slayer brought it up again Sunday on TLC’s Sarah Palin’s Alaska . “Where are the s’mores? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert,” a HILARIOUS, sarcastic Sarah Palin quips. Her love for put-downs and pickin’ fights instead of debating policy intricacies may explain why even ardent conservatives don’t want her as president . Just a theory. Follow the jump for the clip, during which you can also hear Palin complain about her kids’ foibles playing out in the media … man, that sucks for them! Also, enjoy a bonus clip of her with Kate Gosselin for good, hilarious measure. ‘Cause sometimes, one overexposed TLC family just isn’t enough

Captain Beefheart Dead At 69

Avant-garde musician and visual artist battled multiple sclerosis since the ’90s. By James Montgomery “Captain Beefheart” Don Van Vliet Photo: Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns Don Van Vliet, the man known around the world as Captain Beefheart, died Friday (December 17), according to his manager . He was 69. The cause of Van Vliet’s death was not immediately known, though several outlets were reporting it was due to complications from multiple sclerosis, which he had battled since the 1990s. Van Vliet was an accomplished avant-garde musician and visual artist, who along with a constantly rotating crew of fellow oddballs — his handpicked “Magic Band” — bent the rules, melded genres and thoroughly weirded out much of mainstream America for nearly four decades. The origin of his famous Captain Beefheart stage name remains somewhat cloudy (some say it came from a script he wrote with childhood friend/ rival Frank Zappa), but the impact it would have on the worlds of music and art is not. Beginning in 1967, with the release of Beefheart and the Magic Band’s seminal Safe as Milk, and rolling on through other classic bizarre gems like 1969’s Trout Mask Replica (which melded elements of blues, jazz and avant-garde spoken word and was named by Rolling Stone as the 58th Greatest Album of All Time in 2003), ’72’s bar-friendly Clear Spot and ’78’s Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Beefheart forged a territory that was uniquely, unquestionably his — record sales (and the mainstream media) be damned. In the process, he earned a legion of loyal followers — including Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, the White Stripes’ Jack White (who, along with his band the Dead Weather, filmed their “Treat Me Like Your Mother” video near Van Vliet’s childhood home in Lancaster, California) and “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening — and, along with a handful of other acts, is credited with ushering in the genre we now commonly refer to as “alternative rock.” After releasing Ice Cream for Crow in 1982, Van Vliet all but retired from the music industry (though the Magic Band would continue on without him), focusing instead on his other passion: painting. He would spend the remainder of his days living in Northern California with his wife, Jan, creating abstract, expressionist works, which showed often at New York’s Michael Werner Gallery. By the 1990s, he had largely disappeared from the public eye, save for a few appearances, most prominently in Anton Corbijn’s film “Some Yo Yo Stuff,” where he appeared to be frail and weakened. In a statement released to Rolling Stone, the Michael Werner Gallery called Van Vliet “a complex and influential figure in the visual and performing arts” and added that his music and art will live on as his lasting legacy. “After two decades in the spotlight as an avant-garde composer and performer, Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself wholeheartedly to painting and drawing,” the statement read, in part. “Like his music, Van Vliet’s lush paintings are the product of a truly rare and unique vision.” Share your well-wishes for Van Vliet’s family in the comments.
