Wikileaks: Banned In Antarctica

Our government's idiotic war on Wikileaks extends even to America's tiny presence in Antarctica. A memo sent to all Americans in Antarctica effectively censors Wikileaks material from the entire continent. Can't tip off the penguins about our secret plans! The memo was sent out to the 1,500-or-so Americans currently living in Antarctica as part of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). It reminds them that leaked Wikileaks documents are still technically classified, and “the transmission, processing, storage, and/or use of classified information with USAP information systems are prohibited.” Given that the USAP is in charge of the United States' three Antarctic research bases and their communications networks, this amounts to a total Wikileaks blackout for all Americans in Antarctica, who are mostly scientists and support staff. Never mind that one geologist working with the USAP actually blogs for the New York Times, which has been publishing many of Wikileaks' leaked cables. Maybe all government employees should just be sent to Antarctica until this whole Wikileaks thing blows over. It's the only way to protect America. Just How Unpopular Is President Obama?

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/gallery/2010/12/approval-by-numbers-how-obama-c… http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/gallery-presapproval1.jpg Infographic of the Day: Just How Unpopular Is President Obama? The results might surprise you. If you listen to the pundits on cable news — and Fox News especially — then President Barack Obama is reaching theoretically impossible levels of unpopularity, due to his overhaul of health care, the sputtering economy and his bailouts of banks and auto makers. In point of fact, Americans actually like the health care bill, when told what it actually does. And the bailouts of Detroit and Wall Street have had remarkable results. So the issue isn't really about either one. It's the economy, stupid. For proof of that, you need only look at Obama's approval ratings in historical perspective, as Talking Points Memo did. Granted, the man isn't so popular right now — but his unpopularity has some remarkable parallels. In fact, the president whose approval ratings most resemble Obama's is Ronald Reagan. So what was the difference? Reagan, Carter, and Obama all entered office amidst a floundering economy and high unemployment. But with Carter, the economy continued to struggle as he came up for reelection. Not so with Reagan: He had the good fortune to experience a strong bounce-back in job figures right before he came up for reelection. (Whether that was due to Reagan's tax cuts is highly debatable.) It remains to be seen whether the economy will bounce back like that for Obama. Meanwhile, let's take a look at some presidents whose popularity far exceeded Obama's. Take Nixon. Things were great for him — until Watergate, and the great disillusionment with government that followed. But Obama's approval ratings really can't touch Kennedy's, the figure with whom he has often been compared. You could adduce all sorts of reasons why, but it's worth noting that Kennedy was the first true TV President. Never before had America had such a dynamic media figure at the helm, with small kids by his side and a first lady who famously went on national TV to show off her decorating choices. added by: UtopianSky

Obama signs "Child Nutrition" bill

I can't decide if this is a good thing or bad. The children of America do eat mostly junk and should eat healthier, but should we be giving government more direct power over what goes into their bodies at school? What do you think? added by: Eddie_Miller

Jon Favreau Won’t Direct ‘Iron Man 3’

Marvel is in search of a new director for third installment of the comic book franchise, according to reports. By Kara Warner Jon Favreau on the set of “Iron Man 2” Photo: Merrick Morton/Paramount On a day when the movie industry was focused on the Golden Globe nominations , just like in the movies, Hollywood got a few surprise twists. First, Ryan Reynolds confirmed to MTV News that he and wife Scarlett Johansson are splitting. And now, word is that Jon Favreau will not return to direct “Iron Man 3.” According to New York Magazine ‘s Vulture blog, Favreau informed Marvel Studios as recently as Monday night that he would not direct the third film in the blockbuster franchise. The news is shocking considering the massive box-office success and popularity of “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2.” With few details having been made public, we can only speculate about what might have led Favreau to drop out. MTV News spoke to the director just last month, and he seemed uncertain about plans for the third film, particularly with regard to a story line and his impression that Marvel was preoccupied with “The Avengers” movie. “In theory, ‘Iron Man 3’ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers,’ ” Favreau said. “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys. “Honestly, right now ‘Captain America’ and ‘Thor’ are their big priorities,” he continued. “And you learn things by shooting and making movies. The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go.” “Iron Man 3” is currently scheduled for a May 13, 2013, release. New York Magazine reported that Marvel began their search for Favreau’s replacement on Monday night. What do you think of Favreau parting ways with “Iron Man 3”? Tell us in the comments! CNN Breaking News: Richard Holbrooke, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Has Died

Richard Holbrooke, U.S. Special Rep. for Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died, a senior administration official confirms. Holbrooke dies days after heart surgery From Jill Dougherty and Elise Labott, CNN December 13, 2010 7:47 p.m. EST U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke is “a towering figure in American foreign policy,” President Barack Obama says. Washington (CNN) — U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke has died, a senior administration official told CNN Monday evening. Holbrooke had undergone surgery in the past three days to repair a tear in his aorta, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday. “He had a very serious medical emergency on Friday,” Clinton said at a news conference in Quebec, Canada, with foreign ministers from Canada and Mexico. “He has received excellent care including many hours of surgery in the last three days. He is stable but still in very critical condition.” Earlier, a State Department official said Holbrooke was “absolutely fighting in an unbelievable way.” Holbrooke remains unconscious after an additional procedure to aid circulation following the initial surgery on his aorta, the main artery of the body, the State Department said. At a holiday reception for U.S. diplomats later Monday, President Barack Obama praised Holbrooke as “simply one of the giants of American foreign policy” who has served the nation “with distinction for nearly 50 years,” including his work in negotiating the 1995 Dayton Accords that ended the Bosnian war in the former Yugoslavia. “As anyone who has ever worked with him knows — or had the clear disadvantage of negotiating across the table from him — Richard is relentless,” Obama said. “He never stops. He never quits. Because he's always believed that if we stay focused, if we act on our mutual interests, that progress is possible. Wars can end. Peace can be forged.” Holbrooke in critical condition The president said he and his family were praying for Holbrooke's recovery, “and I know that everyone here joins me when I say that America is more secure — and the world is a safer place — because of” his work. “And he is a tough son of a gun, so we are confident that, as hard as this is, that he is going to be putting up a tremendous fight,” Obama said. Holbrooke, the special U.S. representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan, is getting “fantastic care” at George Washington University Hospital, the State Department official said. It is the same hospital where Ronald Reagan was taken after being shot in 1981. Holbrooke was taken there Friday after feeling ill at the State Department. Clinton expressed appreciation for what she called an outpouring of concern and support from “presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers” who have called the State Department since news of Holbrooke's illness broke. His surgeon continues to meet with the family to gives frequent updates, and Holbrooke “is receiving great support from a broad and growing community of family and friends,” the State Department official said. “It's remarkable how many messages of support (his wife, Kati Marton) and the family keep receiving from all corners: foreign ministers and ambassadors from around the world, President (Bill) Clinton, senators and congressmen, colleagues from this Af/Pak job, from Vietnam, from the Balkans, from the U.N., from the private sector,” the official said. Clinton and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen have visited the hospital numerous times, according to the State Department source, who said: “They've each come three times, informally chatting with family members, friends and staffers, and really helping to buoy the assembled.” The State Department also said Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari called Holbrooke's wife Sunday morning. Zardari told CNN's Reza Sayah that Holbrooke is a “fighter.” He said he told Holbrooke's wife to be “brave.” “I'm sure he will fight for his life, and he will come out of it,” Zardari said. Asked to reflect on Holbrooke's impact on the Pakistani region, Zardari called him an “extremely hard-working man” who can “get things done which would otherwise take weeks to get through.” http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/12/13/holbrooke.illness/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN… added by: EthicalVegan
