Anyone who thinks models don’t work hard, think again. Kate Upton made history with her latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover as the first to grace it two straight years since Tyra Banks in 1996-97. Boy did she have to earn it in Antarctica, though. Kate Upton Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Cover Shoot “It was definitely the hardest shoot I’ve ever done,” she says. “The best as well … Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to.” “But I’m from Florida, so it was pretty painful. I was very surprised by the news that that’s where my shoot was going to be located,’’ she recalled. Kate Upton joked that it took her two months to thaw out. “When I came back I was losing hearing and eyesight because my body was shutting down,” she said. “It was working so hard to keep me warm.” Hey, at least the resulting Kate Upton bikini photos will help keep others warm. That must mean something, doesn’t it? She’s a real humanitarian. “It was an accomplishment just to get through the shoot… I didn’t even think about the possibility of being the cover until after I thawed out a bit!” Kate adds. “But now it’s like, wow … I actually went down there and was able to accomplish that.” Planning for the shoot took about three years due to costs and scheduling, making it the first-ever fashion shoot that has taken place in Antarctica. “Everything about the picture is perfect,” SI editor MJ Day said, “First of all, it’s cold, even though we were there in summer. The wind chill was sub-zero.” “The elements are really working against you.” “She never complained. She’d just say, ‘Okay, let’s do it again.’ I knew if I needed to bury someone in clothing, I needed her physique and curves to come through.” You see, ladies? Curves are awesome. Kate Upton 2013 SI cover : SO HOT Not my favorite shot of her, but not complaining Not a fan! Wish they had gone with someone else! View Poll »

(Video Link) Scientists in Antarctica used a time-lapse camera to capture the formation of a brinicle — an icicle made from brine. As the salty water sank, it froze, forming a spike of brine down to the seafloor. As it grew over several hours, the brinicle killed everything in its path, including numerous unlucky starfish. Our government's idiotic war on Wikileaks extends even to America's tiny presence in Antarctica. A memo sent to all Americans in Antarctica effectively censors Wikileaks material from the entire continent. Can't tip off the penguins about our secret plans! The memo was sent out to the 1,500-or-so Americans currently living in Antarctica as part of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). It reminds them that leaked Wikileaks documents are still technically classified, and “the transmission, processing, storage, and/or use of classified information with USAP information systems are prohibited.” Given that the USAP is in charge of the United States' three Antarctic research bases and their communications networks, this amounts to a total Wikileaks blackout for all Americans in Antarctica, who are mostly scientists and support staff. Never mind that one geologist working with the USAP actually blogs for the New York Times, which has been publishing many of Wikileaks' leaked cables. Maybe all government employees should just be sent to Antarctica until this whole Wikileaks thing blows over. It's the only way to protect America. See the memo at the link . . . http://gawker.com/5714434/wikileaks-banned-in-antarctica added by: pjacobs51

Photo: NASA, Public domain R.I.P. Some things are so massive that they can only be appreciated from the vantage point of space. Many of the giant icebergs that are breaking off Antarctica are drifting Northward (is there any other direction that you can go to from the South pole?) and getting stuck on the shallow continental shelf that surrounds South Georgia Island. These icebergs are so large, that when they melt, the fresh water that they release in the ocean is enough to alter the local marine ecosystems…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

The fringes of the coldest continent are starting to feel the heat, with the northern Antarctic Peninsula warming faster than virtually any place on Earth. These rapidly rising temperatures represent the first breach in the enormous frozen dome that holds 90 percent of the world’s ice. by fen montaigne In 1978, when few researchers were paying attention to global warming, a prominent geologist at Ohio State University was already focused on the prospect of fossil fuel emissions trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. His name was John H. Mercer, and when he contemplated what might be in store for the planet, his thoughts naturally gravitated to the biggest chunk of ice on Earth — Antarctica. “If present trends in fossil fuel consumption continue…” he wrote in Nature, “a critical level of warmth will have been passed in high southern latitudes 50 years from now, and deglaciation of West Antarctica will be imminent or in progress… One of the warning signs that a dangerous warming trend is under way in Antarctica will be the breakup of ice shelves on both coasts of the Antarctic Peninsula, starting with the northernmost and extending gradually southward.” Mercer’s prediction has come true, and a couple of decades before he anticipated. Since he wrote those words, eight ice shelves have fully or partially collapsed along the Antarctic Peninsula, and the northwestern Antarctic Peninsula has warmed faster than virtually any place on Earth. The question as humanity pours greenhouse gases into the atmosphere at an accelerating rate, is not whether Antarctica will begin to warm in earnest, but how rapidly. The melting of Antarctica’s northernmost region — the Antarctic Peninsula — is already well underway, representing the first breach in an enormous citadel of cold that holds 90 percent of the world’s ice. Much attention has rightly been paid to the precipitous warming of the Arctic, where Arctic Ocean ice is rapidly shrinking and thinning, Greenland’s large ice sheets are steadily melting, and permafrost is thawing from Alaska, to Scandinavia, to Siberia. But none of the earth’s ice zones, or cryosphere, can compare with Antarctica, which is 1

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes called NPR executives “Nazis” and said Jon Stewart is “crazy” in the second part of his interview with The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz. (In the first part of the interview, published on Wednesday, Ailes said that Obama's “socialism” was “too far left” for international allies, and that the president has “a different belief system than most Americans.”) Ailes spoke about NPR in the context of defending Juan Williams, who was fired from the public radio network after his comments about Muslims on Fox News. Ailes gave Williams a new, multi-million dollar contract in response to the firing. He told Kurtz that he had done so because he was “mad,” and wanted to look after Williams and his family. But he reserved his greatest anger for NPR executives: “They are, of course, Nazis. They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don't want any other point of view. They don't even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive.” Ailes also blasted Jon Stewart, who has made Fox News perhaps his biggest target on “The Daily Show.” “He hates conservative views,” he said. “He hates conservative thoughts. He hates conservative verbiage. He hates conservatives…he's crazy. If it wasn't polarized, he couldn't make a living. He makes a living by attacking conservatives and stirring up a liberal base against it.” added by: TimALoftis
