WaPo Art Critic Rants at Removal of Ant-Covered Jesus; He’d Ban Norman Rockwell

Washington Post art critic Blake Gopnik is hopping mad that the National Portrait Gallery pulled a video from its “Hide/Seek” exhibit on homosexual imagery, insisting: “Now the NPG, and the Smithsonian Institution it is part of, look set to come off as cowards.” Gopnik insisted the ant-covered Jesus in the video was inconsequential, and that if he played censor, he'd keep the insect-covered Christ and scrap the Norman Rockwell: Norman Rockwell would get the boot, too, if I believed in pulling everything that I'm offended by: I can't stand the view of America that he presents, which I feel insults a huge number of us non-mainstream folks. But I didn't call for the Smithsonian American Art Museum to pull the Rockwell show that runs through Jan. 2, just down the hall from “Hide/Seek.” Rockwell and his admirers got to have their say, and his detractors, including me, got to rant about how much they hated his art. Censorship would have prevented that discussion, and that's why we don't allow it. read more

Jennifer Lopez Has Still Got It

When I say that Jennifer Lopez has still got it, I hope you understand that I’m talking about her fat ass and sweet boobs and not anything that has to do with acting or singing or dancing or anything like that. So we’re all on the same page? Good because here she is taking her talents to the Boys & Girls Club of America the other day. Is it really appropriate to expose children to curves like this at such a young age? Now those poor skinny girls are going to have a hard time in high school. Don’t worry, it gets better once you marry a rich old dude.

10 Skills Needed to Thrive in a Post-Collapse World

Some experts see the perfect storm emerging for a dramatic collapse of Western civilization claiming we've reached environmental, economic, and geopolitical tipping points. Clearly, some skills will be far more valuable than others if this societal breakdown occurs. Sorry bankers, lawyers, and accountants, there won't be a need for you in a post-collapse world. Before we quantify the skill sets that will be viable, it is important to define the severity of a “post-collapse” scenario. When taken as a whole, together these tipping points could potentially converge to create a post-apocalyptic Mad Max-type world for the vast majority of humanity. However, given the advanced technology that we possess today, it is unlikely to ever become quite that primitive ever again. Surely there will be pockets of energy and food independence no matter what possible scenario unfolds, but the vast majority may be left to fend for themselves. It would take a serious cataclysmic earth event like a super volcano, a meteor impact, major electromagnetic pulse event, or dramatic pole shift to effect the entirety of humanity. Man-made events like nuclear war, environmental damage, or total economic collapse, no matter how devastating, will be somewhat isolated and contained to specific areas and populations. Incidentally, every nation or territory that has experienced these man-made catastrophes has roared back to life in less than one generation. The only example of nuclear survival was in Japan, while the largest recent big economic collapse was the break-up of the Soviet Union. In both cases those countries went through a very tough period, but ultimately they persevered. For sake of this article, let's assume that some level of devastation is caused by each type of tipping point in the United States. Our ever escalating wars finally reach our shores by way of long-range nuclear missiles, total economic collapse occurs rendering the dollar worthless, and we would likely have less electricity and water than Iraq did after Bush's “shock and awe” campaign. Gasoline and oil supplies would likely be down to a trickle, halting all supply lines of food and other goods to big box stores. Factory farming will be impossible without cheap oil products readily available. The suffering will be dramatic. The only question will become, how do the citizens react? Both the USSR and early 1950s Japan were far more agrarian, and far less dependent on big box stores than America currently is. American dependence on long supply lines, interconnected yet vulnerable electric grid, and pharmaceutical-based healthcare may lead to a more severe breakdown of society than witnessed in those countries. Although, innovative technology for alternative energy and agriculture practices will play a part in surviving; but they can only help the few with the knowledge, means, and stability to use them. And stability will be in low supply for some time, resulting in only small groups with relative comfort — those who planned for the worse. However, as an optimist, I believe that after the initial chaos Americans will rediscover solidarity for one-another, much like they did after 9/11, but this time it will be more sustained out of absolute necessity. Many articles have been written about how to survive the coming collapse, or what is needed to survive, but not many articles have been written about what skills will have value in a post-collapse world. Imagine fulfilling human necessity without consistent fuel or electricity, large-scale food production, or fully-stocked pharmacies and hospitals. The only form of wealth in a collapsed civilization is the knowledge and skills to produce something of human value. Here are 10 invaluable skills that will likely help you sustain yourself in a hand-made local world: Read More: http://globalpoliticalawakening.blogspot.com/2010/11/10-skills-needed-to-thrive-… added by: GLOBALPOLITICAL

DAMAGE CONTROL ; US tries to contain damage from leaked documents

Cleaning Up After Leaks WASHINGTON – Bristling over the unauthorized release of more than a quarter million classified State Department documents, the Obama White House on Monday ordered a government-wide review of how agencies safeguard sensitive information. The weekend release of documents reflecting, in some cases, unflattering assessments of world leaders has caused embarrassment to the administration. The director of the White House's Office of Management and Budget, Jacob Lew, said in ordering the agency-wide assessment Monday that the disclosures are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The U.S. cables contained raw comments normally muffled by diplomatic politesse: Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah pressing the U.S. to “cut off the head of the snake” by taking action against Iran's nuclear program. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi described as “feckless” and “vain.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed as “risk averse and rarely creative.” Publication of the secret memos and documents made public by the online whistle-blower Wikileaks Sunday amplified widespread global alarm about Iran's nuclear ambitions. It also unveiled occasional U.S. pressure tactics aimed at hot spots in Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Korea. The leaks disclosed bluntly candid impressions from both diplomats and other world leaders about America's allies and foes. It was, said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, the “Sept. 11 of world diplomacy.” In the wake of the massive document dump by online whistleblower WikiLeaks and numerous media reports detailing their contents, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was expected to address the diplomatic repercussions later Monday. Clinton may have to confront the fallout first hand after she leaves Washington on a four-nation tour of Central Asia and the Middle East — a region that figures prominently in the leaked documents. Most of the disclosures focused on familiar diplomatic issues that have long stymied U.S. officials and their foreign counterparts — the nuclear ambitions of Iran, North Korea and Pakistan, China's growth as a superpower, the frustrations of combating terrorism. -continued – – – LINK- – – http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101129/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/wikileaks Graphic http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dSyIizN3UI4/TFNGefE2WGI/AAAAAAAAAxQ/g7_M6iyCDvo/s1600/… added by: remanns

Tom Friedman: Tea Party is Wrong – Americans Want Higher Taxes and More Spending

There are times when one has to think the Manhattan building that is the home of the New York Times doesn't have any windows, doesn't have any television sets, and doesn't have any doors that allow employees to venture out and actually see what's happening in America beyond the walls of 620 Eighth Avenue. Consider that after the impact the Tea Party has had on our nation's politics the past 20 months, and the historic elections that just took place on November 2, Times columnist Tom Friedman actually thinks Americans aren't interested in reducing the federal deficit but are instead yearning for higher taxes and greater government spending: read more

Tyranny is coming to the United States- Rollback of First Amendment Rights?

An RT crew was recently arrested by US police while filming protests near the Fort Benning military base in the US state of Georgia. Correspondent Kaelyn Forde’s and her cameraman Jon Conway were detained while covering a rally protesting the School of the Americas. They were arrested after the demonstration was over and everybody, including correspondents, was leaving the area. The arrests were rough and included the use of hard plastic hand cuffs, the same type commonly used by US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, injuring Kaelyn Forde’s wrists. At the time of their arrests the correspondents were not told what crime they were being charged with. They were held as protestors even though they presented valid press credentials to the court. Currently out on bail after 32 hours in custody, Forde and Conway were eventually charged with partaking in an illegal protest and disobeying the orders of law enforcement officers. Davis Swanson, author of the newly released book, “War is a Lie” said this case is a disturbing trend in America, and the constitutional rights of both the press and the activists were violated by the police. He explained the rights of a free press and free assembly seem to be thrown out when it comes to coverage of the US government, military, congressional campaigns and political parties. “There is the freedom of assembly as well as the freedom of the press in our First Amendment, and it is being attacked,” Swanson said. “This is something that has been growing in recent years.” There is a growing police presence at peaceful rallies and events, explained Swanson. Police are increasing their efforts and hostility at non-violent rallies. The event was a Christian protest, made up of activists that included priests, nuns, elderly individuals and minors. “It is a growing problem that ought to concern all of us,” he said. Swanson argued there was no justification for the police to violate the people’s first amendment rights. Increasing arrests, hostility and preemptive targeting of activists is unjust. “There seems to be a crack down on people protesting even as the protests diminish in size,” he added. The US military targets the media. The uses intimidation and releases tailored stories to the media, and most US media simply bend to the power and intimidation of the government, Swanson argued. “We have a campaign of intimidation that is very very successful,” he said. “There are two disgraceful things that happened here. One,an arrest of journalists and activists, and two, most US media outlets not there, not risking arrests, complying withthe desires of those in power or successfully intimidated.” Radio host Alex Jones said the arrests are a frightening sign and an attempt by the government to further curb American freedoms. Having been arrested in the past as a member of the press, Jones said Forde’s story is all too familiar. First, the police force you to move, and then move you again, and when you comply they arrest you anyway, he explained. “This is part of an ongoing program to persecute protestors and the press,” he said. “Now they’re trying to pass legislation where the Justice Department can shut down any website they want without a judge or jury. Tyranny is coming to the United States.” “This is really US tactics that are increasingly used against journalist around the world now coming back here to the United States,” she said. “We’ve seen time and again in war zones the journalists who are independent journalists who are targeted and then it’s labeled an accident. So, some o those same tactics come back here in an effort to shut down peaceful protests which is entirely legal, this was a permitted demonstration, and yet both the demonstrators and members of the media who were covering it were arrested for no reason whatsoever except an act of intimidation. Flounders argued that the military and the media are tied to one another. Thus US media rarely covers these events. She contended that the roll of the US media is shaped by the government, both in content and in how stories are covered. Blogger David Lindorff from ThisCantBeHappening.net argued police are using peaceful protests to study and intimidate activists. added by: MotherForTruth

Farmageddon, the movie: Protect your right to food sovereignty!

The choice of healthy food and to grow food as you see fit is a human right. Access to food is a human right. I am a firm believer in food sovereignty and the right to farm sustainably and am appalled to see how it is slipping away in America, a land that claims to be about freedom. FOOD RAIDS? When we have bankers and government agencies robbing us blind daily in collusion with companies like Monsanto that toxify this planet with disease and death going scott free? As you celebrate your Thanksgiving this year in whatever way you do, not only be thankful for your food, but aware that the freedom to grow, process, distribute, and eat what you want is being sacrificed to industrial agriculture and factory farms in collusion with food chains looking to make big money from eroding the very principles that made this country what it once was. Farmageddon is hopefully going to be released next year. It is a 90 minute documentary on the dwindling food sovereignty we see in America and the extreme measures being implemented to attack farmers who are growing healthy food. All I can say about this is: What the hell happened to our country? added by: JanforGore

Black Eyed Peas Plan Stadium-Heavy 2011 Tour

Group may hit the road ‘after February,’ will.i.am tells Billboard. By Mawuse Ziegbe Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am Photo: David Livingston/Getty Images The Black Eyed Peas are planning to rock as many bodies as possible when they hit the road next year, so they’re hoping to pack their trek into massive venues around the world. Peas frontman will.i.am told Billboard that the foursome’s recent South American gigs will be the blueprint for filling the seats in stadiums across the globe. “South America was a test,” he said. “We did all our homework … to try to figure out how we can do stadiums in other countries, in America, in Europe. If Black Eyed Peas can do five O2 arenas, why don’t we just do it in one shot? If we can do three Staples Centers, we should do one Dodgers Stadium. So that’s how we’ll probably tour this time around.” “The Time (Dirty Bit)” MC said rocking to the collective’s pop smashes with thousands of other revelers is the best way to experience the Peas live. “It’s like you’re there with all your friends. You’re there in front of 50,000 people and they’re there to watch you and your friends,” he said. “Nothing gets any better than that. It’s the best feeling, the best one yet.” The band is expected to get in some practice hitting the stage for a major crowd at the top of next year. Sources have revealed that the Peas will helm halftime-show festivities at the Super Bowl , which often draws over 100 million viewers. Will’s comment that the hitmaking quartet won’t launch their global stadium takeover until “after February,” the same month the Super Bowl airs, is perhaps a hint that the Peas will be throwing down at the football-fest. The Peas’ sixth record, The Beginning, is slated to be released November 30. Are you looking forward to checking out the Black Eyes Peas on tour? Let us know in the comments!
