Schaeffer: ‘Nuttiest’ Evangelicals Support Israel

Author Frank Schaeffer, son of the late prominent theologian Francis Schaeffer, can’t seem to find anything good about evangelical Christians. In his latest blog on the Huffington Post , Schaeffer criticized evangelicals’ support of Israel. “Some of the nuttiest American religious leaders today (and in the past) have latched on to one form or another of Christian Zionism,” he said. “To put it mildly, the evangelical theological/biblical ‘reasons’ have deformed US policy and made America act against self interest,” Schaeffer wrote. “This has also harmed the state of Israel.” Schaeffer suggested that so-called Christian Zionists “would rather see an innocent Jewish or Palestinian child blown up in a rocket attack as long as the ‘Promised Land’ is ‘fully reclaimed’ to fulfill their harebrained ideas of biblical prophecy.” He suggested that American Christians’ support for Israel was driven by a desire to bring about Armageddon, but downplayed a quote he included from a Texas pastor Rev. John Hagee which seemed to suggest some of that support might stem from Biblical history as much as prophecy. “Israel exists because of a covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 3,500 years ago – and that covenant still stands,” Hagee told The New York Times. “World leaders do not have the authority to tell Israel and the Jewish people what they can and cannot do in the city of Jerusalem.” Schaeffer also took the opportunity to attack what he called evangelicals’ “unhealthy affinity with the idea of religion-based states,” criticizing those who believe America was founded on Christian principles. It’s not the first time Schaeffer has attacked Christians, including his late father. On Huffington Post June 17, he wrote that, “We need to eradicate fundamentalism in all its forms,” specifically targeting fundamentalist Christianity. He called the Bible “nuts in many places” and said “no one” follows it. In 2008, Schaeffer defended President Obama’s controversial preacher, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, by criticizing “right wing white preachers (following in my father’s footsteps) [who] rail against America’s sins from tens of thousands of pulpits.” Like this article? Rush Limbaugh: Obama Created Recession As ‘Payback’ For Racism

Rush Limbaugh said on his July 2 radio show that he believes Obama tanked the economy on purpose, both as “payback” for 230 years of racial oppression and because Obama simply doesn't like America. He railed: “Who is Obama? Why is he doing this? Why? Why is he doing it? Is he stupid? Is it an accident? Is he doing it on purpose or what have you? … I think we face something we've never faced before in the country — and that is, we're now governed by people who do not like the country, who do not have the same reverence for it that we do. Our greatest threat (and this is saying something) is internal.” Limbaugh went on to compare Obama to the Black Panthers: “So in this interview with J. Christian Adams yesterday talking about [how] he and his line attorneys were told to just drop the case against the New Black Panthers for voter intimidation in Philadelphia, he said that there were people in the office, DOJ, who said, 'Well, you know, those people suffered the indignity of slavery, discrimination, segregation and so forth.' He said somebody else said, 'This is payback,' meaning, 'All right, look. We don't care if it's the New Black Panthers or whoever it is. Black people in this country have never, ever had a fair shake. This is payback. O.J. Simpson was payback. How does it feel?' That word 'payback' is not mine, [but] it is exactly how I think Obama looks at the country: It's payback time… There's no question that payback is what this administration is all about, presiding over the decline of the United States of America, and doing so happily.” added by: singrrr

Jesus Does Playboy in Portugal of the Day

I figured these pictures were worth posting, not because my name is Jesus, but because I love seeing European countries being far more liberal and daring than America, the place marketed as “The Land of Opportunity” and the “Home of the Free”, when I just deal with nothing but oppression and religious groups dominating laws, media and pretty much everything that labels me a porn site, that prevents the iPAD from having porn apps, and a whole lot of other sexual shit, but at least you fuckers have guns to kill each other cuz you don’t cum enough…. So here is Jesus in Playboy in Portugal for the religious Christians who accidentally land on my site and draft hate mail about how I am going to hell to have another group to target….and for the people who broke free from a religious upbringing to masturbate to like the girl I knew who used to use her mom’s virgin Mary statue as a dildo…

Obama to NASA Chief: Better Relations With Muslim World is the Foremost Mission

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his “foremost” mission as the head of America's space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world. Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA's orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel. “When I became the NASA administrator — or before I became the NASA administrator — he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations. The NASA administrator was in the Middle East last month marking the one-year anniversary since Obama delivered an address to Muslim nations in Cairo. Bolden spoke in June at the American University in Cairo — in his interview with Al Jazeera, he described space travel as an international collaboration of which Muslim nations must be a part. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/05/nasa-chief-frontier-better-relations-… added by: JohnA

Rolling Stone Writer That Took Down McChrystal Gets Book Deal

The Rolling Stone magazine writer that took down General Stanley McChrystal a few weeks ago has been rewarded with a significant book deal. One source says Michael Hastings will get seven figures for his “unprecedented behind-the-scenes account of America’s longest war.” According to Forbes, publishing house Little, Brown will release the following statement later on Tuesday: A forthcoming UNTITLED book by renowned journalist Michael Hastings, author of the Rolling Stone article “The Runaway General” which revealed shocking truths about General McChrystal and the war in Afghanistan, that promises an unprecedented behind-the-scenes account of America’s longest war, to Geoff Shandler, Editor in Chief, Little, Brown and Company, by Scott Moyers at the Wylie Agency. The book will offer an unfiltered look at the war, and the soldiers, diplomats and politicians who are waging it. Based on exclusive reporting in Afghanistan, Europe, the Middle East and Washington, D.C., this landmark work of journalism will elucidate as never before our deeply troubling war in vivid, unforgettable detail. Little, Brown Publisher Michael Pietsch says, “In his brilliant article Michael Hastings has already given us the clearest of insights into the disaster of America’s war in Afghanistan. He is a writer of extraordinary talent and his book will take us deeper and further into the war and its major architects, at a time when we need that clarity desperately.” Mediaite is reporting , “Rumor has it the book went for seven figures, which is a rather serious chunk of change in this publishing environment.” Indeed. This seems pricey for at least two reasons. First, Hastings may have given what he had to Rolling Stone making it possible his book is just an elaboration of what he’s already published. Maybe more importantly, how’s he going to get any new information given his questionable journalistic standards involving telling folks things are off the record when they are apparently not? Regardless, it will be interesting to see whether he offers any new revelations that bring down anyone else. Stay tuned.

Australia’s New Leader Is An Atheist: Americans, Don’t Try This At Home!

When Julia Gillard became Australia's first female prime minister last week she quickly earned international headlines and received a congratulatory call from President Obama for her accomplishment. Now it turns out she's broken another barrier that, for American voters at least, would be far more daunting than her gender: She doesn't believe in God. “No, I don't,” she told an interviewer at Australia's national radio, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corp.) who asked her point blank if she believed in God. “I'm not a religious person.” “I was brought up in the Baptist Church, but during my adult life I've, you know, found a different path. I'm of course a great respecter of religious beliefs, but they're not my beliefs.” Gillard was a studious Christian as a child, winning prizes for catechism lessons and for memorizing Bible verses. But, she noted, “I've made decisions in my adult life about my own views.” The new Australian P.M. is known for her razor-sharp debating skills and direct answers to direct questions, and that was also evident in her interview with ABC radio in Melbourne about her religion, or lack of it. “I am not going to pretend a faith I don't feel,” she said, according to the audio. “And for people of faith the greatest compliment I could pay to them is to respect their genuinely held beliefs and not to engage in some pretense about mine. I think it's not the right thing.” It's hard to imagine any U.S. politician saying such a thing about religion, or being so straightforward about most anything. Our polls have their reasons, of course. Polls consistently show that even as Americans grow increasingly comfortable with voting for women, racial or religious minorities, or a homosexual, they are still not likely to back an atheist. The latest Gallup poll on that question, posed in 2007, showed that 53 percent of American voters said they would not vote for an atheist for president — the highest negatives of any of the categories. (Gallup has not asked about a Muslim candidate, and odds are that would score even lower. Cold comfort for atheists.) Some 43 percent said they would not vote for a homosexual candidate, and 55 percent said they would be willing to back a gay or lesbian for president. In 2007, the Secular Coalition for America offered a $1,000 prize to anyone who could guess the name the “highest level atheist, agnostic, humanist or any other kind of non-theist currently holding elected public office in the United States.” California's Pete Stark, a 19-term Democratic House member from the Bay Area, proved to be the correct answer, as he acknowledged he is “a Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being.” But it's not like he created a rush on atheist candidates, and of course in the next year the victorious contender for president was Barack Obama, probably the most overtly religious Democratic candidate in years. Julia Gillard, on the other hand, was able to say that she shared the values of her fellow Australians, if not their religious beliefs. “What I can say to Australians broadly of course is that I believe you can be a person of strong principle and values from a variety of perspectives. And I've outlined mine to you.” And that seems to be working. An online poll at The Australian newspaper showed that two-thirds of the nearly 15,000 readers who responded to a question about Gillard's beliefs said they didn't care about her “lack of a religious faith.” added by: Stoneyroad
