American Idol Makes First Four Cuts

Sheryl Crow once crooned that “the first cut is the deepest.” For American Idol last night, the first four cuts were the most erroneous. Let’s analyze each below: Joe Munoz over Tim Urban?!? The latter might be cute, but did you see the look of shock on his face after Ryan told Tim he was safe? Did viewers really do Urban a favor by keeping him around and ensuring his weak vocal skills will be torn apart again and again until America comes to its senses? Tyler Grady over Jermaine Sellers?!? We weren’t fans of Grady’s 1970s-inspired gimmick, either. But he made a great point (which Simon acknowledged, if you read his lips) about the judges selecting him for the semifinals… but then jumping all over him for the same schtick that got him there. It would have been nice to have seen if Tyler had more to offer going forward, especially compared to the over-emotional nonsense that Sellers through our way this week. Janell Wheeler over Haeley Vaughn?!? Yes, Wheeler chose the wrong song. She’s not a rocker. But Vaughn comes across like some sort of frightening, dressed-up doll. She just looks awkward on stage and her rendition of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” wasn’t strong. Ashley Rodriguez over Lacey Brown?!? Brown was really bad and Ashley is really good looking. Come on, voters! At least we got to see Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen perform. And at least we can still look forward to Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami and others next week. But this was a poor start for the viewing public. Did you agree with who was sent home? As you ponder that question, check out a few photos below from the first results show of season nine:

Kris Allen Sings ‘Let It Be’ On ‘American Idol’ For Haiti

Song will be available on iTunes with proceeds going to earthquake relief. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Last year’s “American Idol” champ, Kris Allen, paid a return visit to his old haunt Thursday night (February 25) to discuss his recent trip to earthquake-ravaged Haiti and perform on the show without being judged for the first time since his surprise win last year. Allen visited Haiti last week with the United Nations Foundation, and upon his return, he recorded a cover of the legendary Beatles ballad “Let It Be,” which he performed Thursday in front of footage from his trip. “There’s a lot of devastation, a lot of destruction … but there’s a lot of hope, there’s a lot of organizations there that are building things back, and I think it’s going to be better than it was,” Allen said about the conditions on the island. One of the big concerns now, Allen said, is the upcoming rainy season. “The rainy season is actually bad, because it comes, and there’s not a lot of shelter now, and the shelter they do have is not very waterproof,” he said. “And with water comes diseases and all that stuff, it’s really bad. So they need a lot of help, for sure.” Allen’s performance of “Let It Be” was immediately available on iTunes after the show, with all proceeds going to Haiti relief. Viewers were also encouraged to go to AmericanIdol.com to make credit-card donations or to text the word “Idol” to 20222 and reply “yes” when prompted to donate $10. Over footage of the destruction in Haiti and his time spent helping children on the island, Allen stood in a stark spotlight center stage, strumming his acoustic guitar and singing an emotional cover of the iconic rock ballad to the accompaniment of a grand piano. Before taking the stage, Allen talked to MTV News about how he hit upon covering the Beatles classic for the project. “It was actually because we were looking through [my] album and we were like, ‘What song could we sing?’ We can’t sing ‘Live Like We’re Dying,’ ” he explained of the single from his debut album. “And I didn’t feel like I connected with anything else that would inspire people to give something. … So I was like, ‘What can I do that would be moving to somebody?’ And my friend Cale [who played piano with Allen during the performance] actually was like, ‘What if you did “Let It Be?” ‘ I feel like it would be a really moving kind of thing.” Allen said the song has always touched him, whether it was the 1970 original from the band’s final studio album or the version in the 2007 Beatles tribute movie “Across the Universe.” “That song has so much power,” he said.

‘American Idol’ Boots Tyler Grady, Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Munoz

Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta also stop by results show. By Gil Kaufman Tyler Grady on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: Fox After one of the roughest first rounds in “American Idol” memory , voters appeared to get it right with the initial four eliminations of season nine. Though a few of the shakiest competitors from the debut week of live performances lived to see another day — think Tim Urban and Katie Stevens — Thursday night (February 25) marked the end of the road for Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Mu

Bar Refaeli Does Jersey Shore in a Bikini of the Day

These are pictures of Bar Refaeli doing a photoshoot for Interview Magazine in a bikini with Mike “The Situation” of Jersey Shore and the whole thing is pretty fucking funny, not because Bar Refaeli is doing Interview magazine in a bikini, that shits just obvious and part of what she does, but because the cast of Jersey Shore are included in this, despite being one of the bigger jokes America has thrown at us in recent years, I mean other than George Bush, the Iraqi war and Ugly Betty…I’m sure these dudes are loving every second of it and really who wouldn’t, rockin’ a supermodel on your shoulders, where her pussy is rubbin up against your neck, is a serious step up from the fat Jersey chicks they are used to. So these pictures are a celebration and bring hope that ANYTHING is fucking possible…

Tiger Returns to Rehab, Elin Woods in Tow

One day after Tiger Woods’ public apology for cheating on wife Elin, he made good on his claim of returning for more treatment and therapy almost immediately. Tiger and Elin Woods spent time together Friday after his apology speech and Saturday afternoon before he flew out of the Orlando area late Saturday evening. It is believed Elin accompanied him on his flight aboard one of the golf legend’s private jets, which took off around 7 p.m., bound for a rehab center in Arizona. Previously, Tiger had been receiving in-patient care at Gentle Path in Hattiesburg, Miss. This time, Scottsdale, Ariz., is the destination, although only for a week. Elin Woods and their kids are with him, at least for now. “Elin may not stay the entire week with him,” a source said, noting that while relations have thawed somewhat. “She taking the marriage one day at a time .” Woods’ wife was not by his side at the big press conference Friday, but there has been progress made in their marriage, with more time spent as a family. “Tiger wants time with his family and he wants Elin to be part of his recovery,” the source said “He knows it’s a long road but he’s taking it one step at a time.” Tiger and Elin had dinner two nights in a row before Tiger’s televised speech, in which he went out of his way to praise Elin and tell America to leave her alone. Elin called off her divorce lawyer a while ago, but only on a temporary basis. She has told Tiger that doesn’t mean that she’s staying with him, reports suggest. She’s still not wearing her wedding ring, either. Was the golfer’s apology Friday enough? Will he, as he says, prove how sorry he is by his actions over time? Tiger Woods’ apology speech was …

More Adventures in Olympic Racial Drag

We finally figured out why the Russian ice dancers thought they could get away with their brownface ” Aboriginal Dance ” routine. It’s because this year, all the ice dancers were doing racial drag. It all started when ” the International Skating Union decreed the original dance would be performed to folk music this season .” Consequently, last night’s competition saw Italians clicking castanets, a Scottish duo in cowboy hats, and Russians in loincloths. Whereas Russian duo Domnina and Shabalin drew outcry with their warpaint-slathered didgeridoo routine , Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White are receiving multicultural accolades for a Bollywood routine that has Meryl sporting bindi and a modified sari. It’s a hit in India , and Indian-Americans are apparently down with it, too. How did their racial drag avoid Domnina and Shabalin’s pitfalls? Davis and White didn’t look like total asses. In fact, they looked pretty good! According to NBC , Davis and White studied dance with an ex-Bollywooder who now runs a dance studio called BollyFit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Costume materials came from “an authentic Indian clothing store.” Said Davis, “It was very important for us to do research and do the theme justice.” India, like America, is in the cultural export business, so imitation comes across as flattery instead of mockery. By contrast, Domnina and Shabalin chose a culture where dance is often tied to sacred rituals , and rarely shared with outsiders. No brown face. As Domnina and Shabalin discovered, donning a dark mahogany skin suit to camouflage one’s pale white skin is kind of a mood killer. To appease their critics, Domnina and Shabalin ditched the brown face, but not much else for Sunday night’s “folk dance” : On a different note: Did you know the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash are the foundation of “American cowboy folk dance”? Here’s a Scottish duo doing Johnny: Ice dancing: One anthropological revelation after another. Everyone Cares About Hockey All of a Sudden

We just finished the last quarter (or whatever it’s called) of the USA v. Canada hockey game. We won! But all anyone could talk about was how pissed they were that the game was shown on MSNBC. So what? America beat Canada in the Olympic hockey game, 5 to 3. But Americans watching it were not filled with the thrill of victory. Who cares about the score: In America, the game was only shown on crappy MSNBC! And not even in HD! We know people were angry about this because “MSNBC” became a trending topic on twitter. (But not “hockey”. Ha!) And you only become a trending topic on twitter if you die, hump someone’s face during an awards show, or piss a lot of people off. Judging by the level of pure outrage in the twittosphere, relegating their USA/Canada hockey coverage to MSNBC was an act of domestic terrorism. Twitter user Ramzyn ‘s response was typical: NBC didn’t just screw fans—they screwed America . And poor NBC was forced to defend its America-hating ways without even the benefit of KSM’s crack legal team. Yahoo Sports felt owed an explanation , given that the NHL delayed their season two weeks for the Games. Yesterday, the LA Times ran a quote from super-defensive Christopher McCloskey of NBC Universal Sports explaining that they ghettoized hockey so they would be able to show the game without interruption. But everyone knows the real reason why NBC is acting like nobody in America gives a shit about hockey: Nobody in America gives a shit about hockey. In fact, hiding an important hockey game in the upper reaches of the channel lineup was the most patriotic thing NBC could do. Not caring about hockey is a cherished American tradition, up there with starting to follow baseball right before the playoffs and being vaguely aware of how your alma mater is doing in the NCAA tournament. Ever since early man fashioned mammoth tusks into hockey sticks and pushed a primitive puck across the ice, America has rolled its eyes and turned the other way. Plus, think of how much sweeter the victory is, knowing that 95% of Canada was desperately willing their team to victory, while most Americans browsed the Internet with one eye on USA’s Pirates of the Caribbean marathon—and our team still won! We salute you, NBC. In bumping hockey for tape-delayed coverage of women’s bobsledding, you fulfilled your duty as an American broadcaster. And in staging a crazy twitter fit about not being able to watch coverage of a sport they don’t care about in a format that was barely even an option during the last Olympics, American viewers fulfilled theirs. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
