Paul Van Dyk Taps Arty, Austin Leeds, Adam Young For Evolution

‘It was important to collaborate with people that share the same passion in music that I have,’ EDM veteran tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Paul Van Dyk Photo: Ilya S. Savenok/ Getty Images MTV News took great pride in heading down to Florida for Miami Music Week , the annual dance-music get-together. We particularly cherished the opportunity to catch up with Paul Van Dyk, fresh off a smashing set at Ice Palace; the highly decorated Grammy-winning German electronic-music producer is among EDM’s first true legends. “Stuff like ‘Home,’ ‘Time of Our Lives,’ also ‘For an Angel’ — people always request me to play them,” Van Dyk said of his past catalog of hits played for fans. “But I’m really excited because people already knew the new stuff from the album. They went really wild, so that was good!” The album Van Dyk speaks of is the veteran producer’s latest studio effort, his sixth, titled Evolution. It is not only a reflection of the renaissance he seeks to deliver with every new project, but also a sign of the times we live in today. “Look at electronic music,” Van Dyk said. “[It’s gone] from a small subculture 20 years ago to the biggest music culture in the world these days. Also, the way we communicate these days with each other: We didn’t have Facebook five years ago. “Or the way we actually listen to music: iPads, iPhone,” he continued. “How we buy it: iTunes and all that. We didn’t have that 10 years ago. So there’s a massive evolution in how we live together, how we basically enjoy each other. And this is what I tried to bring across with the album, in a way.” Van Dyk is quick to point out that Evolution is not a concept album, with tracks directly connected, but rather that the underlying cohesion comes from a main source of inspiration. “My inspiration is life in general: everything I see, everything I experience,” he said. “So when I go to the studio, every single track is based on that work ethic. And in terms of working on the album, for me it was very important to collaborate with people that share the same passion in music that I have.” Indeed, the project features a fine group of collaborators: The exceptional Austin Leeds appears on album opener “Symmetries” and “Verano.” One of the stand-out collabs comes from ‘s Adam Young on “Eternity,” born of their meeting three years ago. “It was long before ‘Fireflies,’ ” Van Dyk explained. “So there was this guy that was insanely creative. And we just decided, ‘Yeah, let’s do some music together.’ A few weeks later ‘Fireflies’ blew up. And I was like, ‘Holy crap! That’s Adam!’ ” Versatile EDM rising star Arty , championed early in his career by Van Dyk, is featured twice on the project, the second time in a compelling, untraditional way. “There’s a song on the album called ‘The Sun After Heartbreak,’ ” Van Dyk said of a track that also features vocals from Sue McLaren. “[It] is a pure example of what I always say: It’s not about ‘This is dubstep. This is house. This is electro. This is trance.’ It’s about electronic music, because otherwise how would you explain two people coming from the trancey world of things doing a track that is clearly influenced and driven by drum and bass? It’s purely because the creative process was leading us that way.” Related Artists Paul Van Dyk Adam Young Austin Leeds

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Urkel And Opera Singer Impress

Jaleel White and Katherine Jenkins tie for first place, with telenovela star William Levy not far behind. By Kelley L. Carter Kym Johnson and Jaleel White on “Dancing with the Stars” Photo: ABC A reformed nerd. A music legend. A TV host. A Super Bowl champion. All in one room together. That could only mean one thing: ABC’s hit competition series “Dancing With the Stars” is back. The reality show that puts a cornucopia of past and present celebrities on a ballroom dance floor to test their dance moves is back for another season, and during Monday night’s (March 19) premiere, we got to see famous tailfeathers a-shaking. The celebrities will come back and dance one more time next week before the cutting begins. Overall, the judges thought this was the best opener of any of their seasons. Here’s how the season 14 celebs fared: Maria Menounos and Derek Hough In their first rehearsal, the TV journalist set the stage for how we might see her grow this season, telling her partner, three-time champ Hough: “I’m like a dude, but I have boobs. I’m not dainty-like. I want to wrestle. Let’s fight!” They danced the cha-cha their first time out, and the judges thought her timing was good but that she needed to work on overall execution. “Nothing can prepare you for the first dance. But until you come onto this floor for the first time, you’re never sure how you’ll cope. Overall, I thought you coped very, very well. Great start to the show. Well done,” said head judge Len Goodman. 21/30 Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya He might be a soap-0opera bad boy, but on the dance floor, he was more animated than brooding. The judges thought he could dance and that his foxtrot had a lightness about it. What he needs to work on? His footwork. “Beautifully acted, beautifully danced. I loved the way you extend your moves. Week one! What are you going to do week two?” said Bruno Tonioli. 23/30 Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd Football players — and athletes in general — typically have a good run during this competition. Driver’s athleticism (and gridiron moves) look to serve him well. The judges thought his cha-cha was a crowd-pleaser. “You are nothing but charisma and charm for days! You kicked that cha-cha’s booty!” said Carrie Ann Inaba. 21/30 Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff The pop singer said he agreed to do the show because he wanted to get out from behind the piano during his shows. He’s certainly paired up with the right partner; Smirnoff is the defending champ from last season. The judges thought his foxtrot wasn’t the best first showing, even though they found it to have a gentle quality to it. “You coped well with a difficult dance. I liked the routine. I thought it flowed. The foxtrot is a romantic sort of dance, and you were a little bit stiff,” Goodman said. 20/30 Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower There’s always a Disney star in the mix, and the young guns tend to go far. For their first dance, they did the cha-cha, something Fegan’s professional partner thought might pair well with his natural style, considering he’s a freestyle hip-hop dancer. The judges thought Fegan and Hightower had the coolest spin they’ve seen in all 14 seasons. “You, Roshon, can go on and on and on, I’m telling you! Laser-sharp. Never too early. You split it in the middle. It was unbelievable!” Tonioli said. 23/30 Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy For their first dance, they did the fox trot, and the “View” co-host was concerned because she said she doesn’t do elegance very well. Should she last, it’ll be something she’ll spend much of the season working on, she said. The judges said she brought the joy of dance into her routine. They also said she moved very well. “You are the happiest contestant we’ve had ever in all of the 14 seasons of ‘Dancing With the Stars’! You had so much joy. Nice job,” Inaba said. 23/30 Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy She’s on the prairie no more! This former child actress — we loved her as Laura on “Little House on the Prairie” — danced the cha-cha for her first dance, and the judges thought she coped very well with a difficult dance and found her performance inspiring. “I would like to have seen a little more shape in your free arm and a little more hip action. But I thought it was a very ambitious routine,” Goodman said. 20/30 William Levy and Cheryl Burke They call this telenovela star the Mexican Brad Pitt, but after being in front of a North American audience, the easy-money guess is that Levy, who’s actually Cuban, will be able to stand on his own name. The judges thought his first dance, the cha-cha, was incredible. They thought he captured the spirit of the dance and praised his hotness. “The hottest package of the season! The nation is wild about Levy!” Tonioli screamed. 24/30 Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovoloni The tennis legend is a breast cancer survivor and she’s paired up with Dovoloni, one of the show’s favorite professional dancers. Their first dance was the fox trot, and the judges said the most decorated tennis player was beautiful, elegant and refined on the court. “I love strong women, but it’s so beautiful to see this transformation. I want you to work on your turns for future weeks,” Inaba said. 20/30 Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas The Welsh opera singer hopes that just because she’s a new face to North America, that won’t count her out. She sang on “DWTS” last year, and now she’s back to test her dancing skills. Her first dance was the foxtrot, and the judges said her performance was exquisite and the style was impeccable. They also said she set the bar very high. “I thought you had wonderful musicality. I liked the detail that went on throughout the dance,” Goodman said. 26/30 Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus The Grammy winner joked that the Pips never let her dance. She’s hoping to make like a Pip this season and get her groove on. For her first dance, she took on the cha-cha, and the judges (not to mention the crowd) thought she was outstanding. The judges said there was a naturalness about her dances and that she oozed rhythm. “The legend has got the moves! You’ve got class, you’ve got sass and you are a star. A real one! Absolutely!” Tonioli said. 23/30 Jaleel White and Kym Johnson White will always be our favorite, awkward nerd — he played Steve Urkel on the hit show “Family Matters” — but he’s hoping to discover how coordinated he is in real life. His first dance was the foxtrot, and the judges didn’t think he was a goofball at all. Tonioli said he thought he was watching Gregory Hines dance. “Jaleel, you are the icing on the cake. Smooth, smooth, super smooth,” Inaba said. 26/30 Who was your favorite celeb on the first episode of “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Voice’ Recap: Erin Martin Wins One Strange Battle

Six more contestants are sent home as battle rounds continue and the live shows draw nearer. By John Mitchell Erin Martin on “The Voice” Photo: NBC The theme on Monday night’s (March 19) episode of “The Voice” seemed to be strange pairings and even more oddly matched songs. Nearly every team to enter the ring was working one, the other or both for the third battle round, which saw judges Christina Aguilera , Blake Shelton , Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green send six contestants home and add even more members to their respective teams to take to the upcoming shows. Let’s get right to it! Team Adam The first pairing of the night was Team Adam’s Pip and Nathan Parrett. Pip’s popularity during the blind auditions (he got all four judges to turn their chairs) intimidated Nathan from the start and the pair was given a tall order when Adam assigned them Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” It’s no wonder, then, that mentor Robin Thicke’s major recommendation to Perrett was to up his confidence and get ready to sell it once he hit the stage. But while Thicke was busy giving Perrett a pep talk, Alanis Morrisette was advising Pip to take it down a notch and not over-sing the song Two clean-cut pop singers tackling Winehouse’s bluesy hit might seem strange, but it gave both an opportunity to show their range as vocalists and earned raves from all the judges. Ultimately, though, Pip’s stage presence and consistency won him a place on Team Adam for the finals. One of the night’s few pairings that made sense came later in the night, during Levine’s team’s second meeting in the ring, which saw raspy Angel Taylor go up against “sultry vocalist” (host Carson Daly’s words, not mine) Katrina Parker, singing “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Thicke had a lot of faith in Taylor, saying she had what it takes to win the whole thing if she remembered to bring emotion to her performance, but the judges didn’t feel the same. Parker brought it to the battle and won the support of Xtina, Blake, Cee Lo and ultimately Levine, who sided with the three judges and will take Parker with him to the live shows. Team Cee Lo Cee Lo created what had to be the night’s most awkward pairing: whispery Erin Martin and rock duo the Shields Brothers. Stylistically, the two couldn’t be more different — Martin kind of sounds like Macy Gray, while the Shields Brother tear into songs like your friendly neighborhood garage band. The strangeness extended to the mentor stage too, when the Bros were joined for rehearsal by Babyface, who called their first run-through “a challenge.” “I thought ‘Wayne’s World,’ ” he added. He asked them to express a softer side, and when they did, he seemed pleased that he could finally “hear your voices.” On her way into the ring, Martin was “100 percent confident” she would win and that “power [i.e. the Shields Brothers] isn’t talent, it’s just loud.” (Dis!) This battle was strange right down to the song: “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by Tina Turner. Christina raved about the performance, but the other judges weren’t so sure. The only thing Blake could really think to say was, “Erin, I am so glad you wore that.” Cee Lo called it “wonderfully strange” and chose Martin to move forward because he felt he would be better able to mold her unique voice while the Shield Brothers were too set in their garage-rock shtick. Team Christina Ashley De La Rosa became nervous the second Christina told her was going up against one of the show’s early front-runners, Jonathas, a father of two who lived in poverty as a child in Brazil. When they were given “No Air” by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, she started freaking out. During the blind auditions, Jonathas’ vocal similarity to Usher caused quite a stir, so Ashley worried that being given a song so firmly in his wheelhouse (there was no denying from the beginning that he’d sing the heck out of Chris Brown’s part in “No Air”) would play to his advantage. But in the end, his comfort with the style and choice not to step outside it and show the judges he could do something else worked against him. While he was a natural singing Brown’s smooth R&B, the song gave Ashley a chance to show off her range. She did a great job with Sparks’ part, and her effort was rewarded with a continued spot on Team Xtina. Team Blake The strange pairings continued as Team Blake’s Jermaine Paul, a former backup singer for Alicia Keys, and pop-singing Texas teenager AlyX hit the ring together to sing the mega-’80s classic “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” by Billy Ocean. The song required a carefree attitude that mentor Miranda Lambert just wasn’t confident young AlyX had. “I’m not sure she’s ever had fun and cut loose,” Lambert said, prescribing “sassiness” if she wanted to pose much of a challenge against Jermaine. It was a futile effort. Paul owned the song and the judges let him know it. “I mean, come on, Jermaine, you made that song your own,” Xtina fawned. Adam and Cee Lo agreed. And while Blake offered AlyX an “A” for effort, he unsurprisingly went with Paul, sending AlyX packing. The night’s most dramatic performance was its last, between Team Blake’s Gwen Sebastian and Erin Willet. In addition to their respective backstories (more on that later), the pair are total opposites when it comes to their singing styles. “Gwen is a country singer; Erin couldn’t be anything farther from that,” Blake explained as his rationale for teaming the two. And like every other country singer in the competition, Sebastian was enamored with her mentor Lambert, saying of the country star, “Her voice evokes every emotion I want to as a singer.” Things took a turn just before the battle, however, when Erin revealed that her father, who is suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, is not doing that well. In fact, he’d only been given days to live, but he wanted her to stay in the competition, “I’m trying to be as present as I can be,” Willett told Shelton, who praised her devotion to both her father’s wishes and the competition. “I’m going to push from a place of wanting my father to be proud of me,” Willett said before she went on. Each judge commented on how radically different the two singers’ vocal styles were when they hit the stage, and it divided them. Christina and Adam went with Erin while Cee Lo picked Gwen. In the end, Blake sided with Xtina and Adam and picked Willett, who dedicated her win to her father. Moving On

Whitney Houston’s Funeral: Watch It Here

Fans line streets near New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where funeral service is under way today. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Raynold D. Fabre-Jeune Whitney Houston Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images NEWARK, New Jersey — With her music, Whitney Houston brought joy to the lives of her family, friends and fans, so it is only right that exactly one week after her death, on the day of her funeral, all the love Whitney gave is given right back. Live video by Ustream Fans lined the streets of Newark, New Jersey, in hopes of getting as close as they could to the New Hope Baptist Church, where the funeral for Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel on February 11, is being held. It is the same church the pop diva grew up attending and where she built a loving fanbase even as a youngster with her powerful church choir vocals. “Everybody, I want them to know that God sent us an angel, and now his angel has gone back home to rest and sing in heaven,” Patricia Copeland Williams, a Houston family friend, told MTV News on Friday upon leaving the pop star’s wake at New Hope Baptist. “We will always love her and we’ll always remember, and we’re never going to forgot Cissy, the woman that birthed her.” The Houston funeral is a private affair and only invited guests are allowed into the church and the surrounding city blocks. Before the ceremony, fans gathered outside of police barricades on the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, about four blocks from the church, singing Houston’s hits including “Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You.” Media outlets lined the block on the corner of Lock Street and Essex Avenue, but without an invite, that was about as close as anybody would get. Musical luminaries and close friends Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder and CeCe Winans are all expected to attend. Kevin Costner, who starred with Houston in the 1992 hit film “The Bodyguard” and ex-husband Bobby Brown are also among the expected attendees. Aretha Franklin, who is Whitney’s close family friend, had been scheduled to sing “I Will Always Love You” at the service but canceled due to illness, according to CNN . Franklin performed in Whitney’s honor Friday night at Radio City Music Hall. Stay with MTVNews.com all day Saturday for continuing coverage of Whitney Houston’s funeral services.
