Oh, for Christ’s sake: A few hours after David Letterman’s head writers tweeted in stereo that Lindsay Lohan would deliver Thursday’s Late Show Top 10 list, Lohan herself tweeted a denial : “I am NOT going to be doing David Letterman, I’m not sure how this happened, but I am sorry for the confusion…” Aren’t we all — particularly, this morning, CBS.

For those of you hoping to see another Joaquin Phoenix meltdown on The Late Show with David Letterman , last night was probably very disappointing. Happy anniversary, Jay Leno! On Sept. 14, 2009, The Jay Leno Show premiered on NBC to much fanfare (as Time foolishly prognosticated , “Jay Leno is the Future of Television”) but not much in the way of ratings. A year later, the show is but a memory, and not a particularly funny one; The Jay Leno Show wasn’t even good enough to become a Chevy Chase Show -like punchline. Still, a lot happened in the last 365 days and ahead, Movieline offers you a compendium of the five most unexpected, Leno-related events.

Good news and bad news, Jay Leno haters. Ratings for The Tonight Show reached an all-time low in the advertiser coveted 18-49 demographic this summer, down 22 percent from the mark Conan O’B rien set a year ago. Hooray! Ready for the bad news? Leno still had more overall viewers than Conan did over the same time period last summer, and The Tonight Show still easily defeated The Late Show with David Letterman . The moral of the story: Late night television is doomed. [ THR ]

The grim, almost impossibly violent Harry Brown will no doubt draw endless comparisons to Dirty Harry and other risible exemplars of do-it-yourself crimefighting. But beyond the grit of the British projects where lawless hell descends, the film truly thrives in the quiet dignity afforded by leading man Michael Caine. Even as his ex-Marine title character goes to war against the subculture of hoodlums, addicts, dealers and thieves, the 77-year-old acting legend reinforces the bloodshed with purpose and gravitas. Clearly there’s a little something more going on here than just target practice; Brown’s mission to restore order is perhaps secondary only to Caine’s own to effect change.
