Daily Kos: Tea Parties Much Like Texans Who Cheered JFK’s Assassination in 1963

The Daily Kos could not let the anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination pass without making comparisons between the “far right” greeting JFK received in Dallas in 1963 and the greeting President Obama receives from the Tea Parties today. The blogger with the handle “Devtob” claimed some Texans cheered the death of Obama in the “nut country,” and presumes today's Texans would cheer Obama's death: Dallas was also the site, in 1961, of the National Indignation Convention, which Rick Perlstein relates to the tea partiers of today : Thousands of delegates from 90 cities packed a National Indignation Convention in Dallas, a 1961 version of today's tea parties; a keynote speaker turned to the master of ceremonies after his introduction and remarked as the audience roared: “Tom Anderson here has turned moderate! All he wants to do is impeach (Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl) Warren. I'm for hanging him!” read more

Eva Longoria Confirms Divorce From Tony Parker With ‘Great Sadness’

‘We love each other deeply and pray for each other’s happiness,’ she tweets. By Jocelyn Vena Eva Longoria and Tony Parker Photo: Michael Tran/ Getty Images After news broke of her divorce from Tony Parker on Wednesday (November 17), Eva Longoria released a statement on Twitter confirming the split. “It is with great sadness that after 7 years together, Tony and I have decided to divorce,” the “Desperate Housewives” star wrote. “We love each other deeply and pray for each other’s happiness.” Longoria’s soon-to-be-ex-husband also took to Twitter to post a nearly identical statement. TMZ posted the papers the actress filed at L.A. County Superior Court, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Longoria is also asking for spousal support from Parker, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs. The legal docs mention the prenup the couple signed in 2007 and amended last year. The couple had been plagued with rumors of Parker’s infidelity, and a source told TMZ that the actress is “devastated.” Longoria, 35, and Parker, 28, met in November 2004 and were engaged in November 2006. They exchanged vows during a small civil service and again, a day later, on July 7, 2007, at Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, a 17th-century castle on the outskirts of Paris. They have no children together. The news of Parker and Longoria’s split was surprising, as the couple are frequently photographed cuddling and generally appearing happy together. Just last month, Longoria stopped by the “Ellen” show, where she told host Ellen DeGeneres that Parker surprises her every year for their anniversary and that this year he took her to Croatia. Mid-story, Longoria seemed to sense that DeGeneres might be planning one of her signature “scares,” and when the actress turned around, Parker was standing on set. He ran out and gave her a hug and kiss in front of the audience. Related Photos Eva Longoria And Tony Parker In Happier Times

Eva Longoria And Tony Parker Not Divorcing

Rep for ‘Desperate Housewives’ star denies Parker filed divorce papers, after gossip site reports a split. By Kara Warner Tony Parker and Eva Longoria Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Initial reports that celeb couple Eva Longoria and Tony Parker are headed for divorce have turned out to be a false alarm. Gossip site TMZ first reported on Tuesday (November 16) that San Antonio Spurs player Parker filed for divorce at a Texas courthouse Monday. The site claimed two clerks at the Bexar County Courthouse confirmed papers were filed and sealed by a family law judge. But about an hour later, TMZ took down the story and replaced it with a statement from Longoria’s rep saying that no such case had been filed and that Parker does not have a divorce lawyer. Longoria’s rep also confirmed to MTV News that Parker has not filed for divorce. TMZ now reports that a different clerk at the Texas courthouse claims she is in charge of sealed cases and that no such case crossed her desk. Longoria, 35, and Parker, 28, met in November 2004 and were engaged in November 2006. They exchanged vows during a small civil service and again, a day later, on July 7, 2007, at Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, a 17th-century castle on the outskirts of Paris. Even in light of a spate of celebrity splits , the news of Parker and Longoria’s split was surprising as the couple is frequently photographed cuddling and generally appearing happy together. No word on how or why the rumor surfaced, but if the couple’s public interactions are any indication, the report seemed to come from nowhere. Related Photos Lovebirds: Eva Longoria And Tony Parker

FNC Cites MRC, NewsBusters on Media Indicting America as Islamophobic

On Saturday’s Fox News Watch, host Jon Scott picked up on a recent “Media Reality Check” report by the Media Research Center – parent organization to NewsBusters – titled “Smearing America as Islamophobic,” which documented that the mainstream media have portrayed America as Islamophobic because of public opposition to the Ground Zero mosque. Scott: “The Media Research Center, Jim, released a study this week titled ‘Smearing America as Islamophobic.’ The overall thrust is that networks like NBC, CBS, ABC are calling these protests at Ground Zero, protests over the mosque, Islamophobia. Do they have a point?’” After panel member Jim Pinkerton of the New America Foundation voiced his agreement with the MRC’s findings, Scott seemed to pick up on another MRC/NewsBusters item as he quoted ABC’s Christiane Amanpour from last week’s This Week show when she portrayed America as Islamophobic. Scott: “Let me read you a quote from Christiane Amanpour… At the top of her show on Sunday, she noted the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that had just passed, and she said, ‘She said nine years later, the growing hostility toward Muslim-Americans. Not since 9/11 has the country seen such anti-Muslim fervor,’ and said, ‘Muslim-Americans are feeling vulnerable.’ Where’s her proof?” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Saturday, September 18, Fox News Watch on FNC: JON SCOTT: The Media Research Center, Jim, released a study this week titled “Smearing America as Islamophobic.” The overall thrust is that networks like NBC, CBS, ABC are calling these protests at Ground Zero, protests over the mosque, Islamophobia. Do they have a point? JIM PINKERTON: I think they do. I think the facts speak for themselves. I mean, the mere fact that the media would so consciously take the imam’s side in this battle, and every high-minded liberal journalist and columnist in the country says, is obligated to say, “Yes, we must build the mosque,” when the big question is, and I think Judy said this a few weeks ago, there’s no evidence they have the money. Forget the right or wrong of the thing. They’re about 100 million behind where they need to build this thing. SCOTT: Ellis, let me read you a quote from Christiane Amanpour, one of your favorites I’m sure. At the top of her show on Sunday, she noted the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that had just passed, and she said: “She said nine years later, the growing hostility toward Muslim-Americans. Not since 9/11 has the country seen such anti-Muslim fervor,” and said, “Muslim-Americans are feeling vulnerable.” Where’s her proof?

Australia: Queensland lawyer Alex Stewart smokes pages from the Koran and Bible

A BRISBANE-based lawyer and atheist who videoed himself smoking what appeared to be joints made with pages from the Bible and the Koran expects to lose his job at a Queensland university. In the video, posted on YouTube, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) staffer Alex Stewart compares cigarettes made with pages from the two holy texts. In the clip, titled “Bible or Koran – which burns best?”, the professed atheist says burning religious books is no big deal and people need to get over it. “It's just a f—ing book,” he says. “Who cares? It's your beliefs that matter. Quite frankly, if you are going to get upset about a book, you're taking life way too seriously.” But the QUT, which employs Mr Stewart, is not impressed. Vice-chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said that the university does not support the destruction of religious artefacts. “The university is obviously extremely, extremely unhappy and disappointed that this sort of incident should occur,” Professor Coaldrake said in Sydney today. “It may have occurred in the individual's private time or on a weekend – it doesn't matter. “There is always in the community collateral damage to these sorts of things.” Prof. Coaldrake said Mr Stewart met university management today and has since decided to go on leave for an unspecified period. Mr Stewart had not been sacked, Prof. Coaldrake said after the Sydney news conference, but the university would review the matter in accordance with its code of conduct. Mr Stewart, an assistant organiser with a group called Brisbane Atheists, was not at his Brisbane home today but in an earlier message on the group's website he said he expected to be sacked. “I'm screwed. I think I will lose my job over this. Damn it,” he wrote. Yesterday, the president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ikebal Patel, slammed the video. “I think it's highly offensive that he has done this to two of the holiest books in the world,” Mr Patel said. “It does not in any way add any value to trying to promote world peace and the consideration of different views – especially when there are heightened tensions around the anniversary of September 11 and the Eid el Fitr (end of Ramadan) celebrations.” However the president of the Islamic Association of Australia, Sheik Muhammad Wahid, said while Mr Stewart's motives were deeply hurtful to Muslims, his future was for the university to decide. “We condemn it and our feelings have been hurt by this man,” said Sheik Muhammad Wahid. “There is no need for this kind of thing, just to create disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia.” He urged Muslims to turn the other cheek. “I urge my fellow Muslims to abide by the laws of this country and not take any action which breaks the law,” he said. “These types of actions should be condemned by the wider community. He must be asked what was his agenda, what was his purpose? Maybe he was not of sound mind at the time.” Queensland police said they were not investigating the matter. In the video clip, Mr Stewart – who does not identify himself as a QUT staffer – says the Bible and the Koran are “just books”. He refers to the furore sparked in the United States by a controversial pastor, who had threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. “With respect to books like the Bible and the Koran, whatever, just get over it,” he says. “That said, I don't think it's completely appropriate unless it's done for a good purpose, which I've done today.” He gave the Bible a seven out of 10 for its burning qualities, and said it was better than the Koran which left him feeling sick. As he smokes part of a page from the Koran, he ponders: “I wonder what Mohammed would have thought about this. Is this profanity, is it blasphemy? Does it really matter?” Mr Stewart has told The Courier-Mail the video was a joke and he does not do drugs. The green substance featured in the video was actually grass clippings, he said. He defended the stunt, saying basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech, should not be threatened simply because someone might be offended. Comment was being sought from the Catholic church. added by: eden49

Extra Seriously Injured During Stunt on Transformers 3 Set

During a surely ridiculous stunt on the set of Transformers 3 , 24-year-old extra Gabriella Cedillo was seriously injured when a metal cable cut through the windshield of her Toyota and “sliced through her skull.” The aspiring actress (and current bank teller) was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious head trauma. Deadline reports that Cedillo — who obviously has no training as a stunt performer — was paid $25 for the use of her car. [ Deadline , ABC Chicago ]
