The pop superstar will receive the prize at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards on June 6 in New York City. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, as the trade organization announced on Wednesday night that the pop star will be among its 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards winners, the Associated Press reports . Gaga will be presented with the style icon award at this year’s ceremony, which will take place on June 6 in New York City. CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg and executive director Steven Kolb made the announcement at the DVF Studio in the Big Apple, where all the nominations were made public for the event. Also set to be recognized at the CFDA Awards is designer Marc Jacobs, will who will receive the lifetime achievement award. According to von Furstenberg, Jacobs e-mailed her noting that he didn’t think he was old enough for the honor and that he wanted it renamed the “half-lifetime award.” She explained to the fashionistas in the room, “I told him that I’m much older than him and I’m still kicking.” In addition, Jacobs garnered a nomination for the womenswear designer of the year prize, as did Alexander Wang and the design duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler. The Olsen twins are also up for an award. They will be competing in the womenswear category for emerging talent for their collection The Row, going up against Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra. The International Award will go to Phoebe Philo, who designs for Celine and who gets a shout-out from Kanye West on “Dark Fantasy,” the lead cut from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. Other 2011 CFDA nominees include Wang, Phillip Lim and Robert Geller in the up-and-coming menswear designer category, and Alejandro Ingelmo, Eddie Borgo, Pamella Love and Jason Wu for accessories. Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, Jarobi reveal to MTV News why they lost ‘trust’ in director Michael Rapaport and share e-mail from producers that prompted ‘red flags.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News Q-Tip is finally telling his side of the story regarding Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, the Michael Rapaport-directed documentary about the legendary group that premiered at Sundance in January. MTV News’ Sway Calloway sat down exclusively with A Tribe Called Quest members Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi, who called in by phone, on Monday (March 14) and the group opened up about the misgivings they’ve been having regarding the doc. Up until now, fans had mostly been privy to Tip’s online commentary, but they went into detail about some of the “red flags” that led them to reconsider their support of the film. (Tribe member Phife was not present.) According to Q-Tip, on December 17, 2010, a couple of weeks after he initially expressed concern about the film, an e-mail was accidently sent to him by one of the producers that read as follows: “First off let’s close the Billing Block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that. Then we’ll f— them on everything else.” Seated next to Ali in our newsroom, Q-Tip contended that the e-mail conversation clearly stemmed from the group’s early concern about not being credited as producers on the film. “I mean, what you think?” Q-Tip responded rhetorically when Sway asked about his immediate reaction to the e-mail message. “I mean, automatically you revert back, because this is some hip-hop sh– ultimately.” But the rapper didn’t “revert” and violence was averted. Still, Q-Tip maintained that despite this point of contention, the group was still participating in the film’s production and were awaiting edits they requested be made. Our interview also contradicted Rapaport’s assertions to MTV News that Q-Tip was speaking for himself and not the group. Tip said another grievance he had with the filmmaker was the questionable timing of the documentary trailer’s leaking to the Internet. The nearly five-minute preview clip was also erroneously titled, he said. “The same day of the announcement that it came to Sundance, that ‘Beats, Rhymes & Fights’ trailer came out,” Q-Tip said, referring to an earlier version of the title. “All of this stuff is going on and we’re still trying to move forward in good faith and we see this e-mail, inadvertently, which was a godsend. I believe that that was the universe giving that to us and showing us who we were dealing with.” The producers’ response to their own e-mail gaffe only made Q-Tip more agitated. “Their whole comeback to that was, ‘Oh, he’s just frustrated, everybody’s frustrated,’ ” Tip said. But he countered, “When you’re frustrated you say, ‘Yo, I’mma kick his ass. He’s an a–hole, I can’t stand him, I’mma f— him up. I can’t f— with him again.’ Those are things you say out of frustration. But when you say, ‘First off, let’s close the Billing Block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that. Then we’ll f— them on everything else,’ that’s strategy. “That’s premeditated, first. And second, you feel comfortable to say it to the rest of your team. That means that if the environment is conducive for you to have that kind of banter and that kind of language, God knows what else they’ve been saying amongst themselves. So how can we trust them?” The only member of the group that attended the “Beats, Rhymes and Life” Sundance premiere was Phife . And in spite of the ongoing drama, A Tribe Called Quest still say Rapaport did a great job directing the film and that everyone should see it. Having come out as a lesbian in December 2009 on Today, Meredith Baxter returned to the NBC program to make another announcement Tuesday: She was a victim of domestic violence. Baxter, best known as the mom on Family Ties, alleged her ex-husband and Bridget Loves Birney co-star, David Birney, abused her in their marriage. When asked why she stayed with Birney, who denies the allegations, Baxter replied, “I didn’t know I had a choice. I didn’t know I could go.” She adds that Birney purposefully set his sights on her . “He’s not going to pick someone who’s on top of themselves and who’s confident and aggressive,” she said. “For him to be who he needed to be, it needed to be someone who was mousy and quiet and retiring, and that’s what I was.” The 63-year-old Baxter said she was able to keep this and other personal problems a secret from the stars she worked with over the years. “You learn to compartmentalize. As soon as I got to the studio, my home life was not happening,” she recalled. “I never talked about it.” “No one knew anything.” Baxter, who has three kids with Birney, said she eventually “had to change my thinking” because “I didn’t want to be a victim” anymore.

The baby, named Coco Reese Lakshmi Kanal, is the first child for both. Kanal, 40, made the announcement via No Doubt’s website in a post titled “TONY + ERIC = COCO.” The message reads, “Welcome to the world our gorgeous daughter — Coco Reese Lakshmi Kanal. She entered our lives on January 24, 2011. Mom, Dad and Baby are happy and in love.” Baby Coco joins the other No Doubt offspring — all of the other band members have children as well — including Gwen Stefani’s two sons with husband Gavin Rossdale — Kingston and Zuma. 2011 should be a year for big news and arrivals for No Doubt . In September of last year, Kanal spoke with Billboard about the band recording again after nearly a decade since their last studio release, 2001’s Rock Steady . “I swear, we’re having more fun than we’ve ever had writing a record before,” Kanal told the magazine, adding, “I think [because] it’s been a while, but also because we’re older … the fact that we’re still doing it together after 24 years — you know, working on music — I think we really appreciate that.” Want to congratulate Tony and his girlfriend on their new baby? 28-year talk-show veteran says hosting ‘was the biggest thrill of my life.’ By Jocelyn Vena Regis Philbin Photo: Jason Kempin/Getty Images After 28 years as the co-host of “Live!” Regis Philbin announced Tuesday (January 18) that he will retire. Philbin told viewers live on-air that this will be his last year hosting the morning talk show mainstay. “It’s been a long time: It’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it,” he explained , with co-host Kelly Ripa by his side. “Everything must come to an end for certain people on-camera, especially certain old people,” he joked. Further information about when Philbin’s last day will be or who might replace him was not announced, however he added, “This is gonna happen sometime the end of the summer or fall. We’ll have a lot of fun between now and then!” Ripa, who has been hosting the show with Philbin for nearly a decade, added , “I think I can only speak for America, and all of us here, when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true. And I wish I could do something to change your mind.” Ripa joined Philbin in 2001 after current “Today” host Kathie Lee Gifford left the show in 2000. Gifford was the show’s second co-host: It began in 1983 with the name “The Morning Show” and Cyndy Garvey by Philbin’s side. Gifford replaced Garvey in 1985. Three years later, the show went national and gained the “Live! With Regis And Kathie Lee” moniker. TMZ reports that Ripa had no idea Philbin was going to make the announcement Tuesday. Sources told the website the daytime vet alerted his co-host of the announcement only 15 minutes before they went live. The source adds that Ripa was “stunned,” but “she wasn’t upset.” Philbin reportedly decided to stay mum until the last minute for fear that the news might leak.
