Slaughterhouse’s Joe Budden Explains Delay In Signing With Eminem’s Shady Records

‘Very early on, the four of us agreed that Shady would be the best place for the group to be,’ Budden says. By Paul Cantor Joe Budden Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage On the heels of the announcement on Wednesday that Eminem has signed Slaughterhouse to his Shady Records imprint, members of the group are beginning to speak out about the deal. Crooked I has already alluded to Shady giving the group a “bigger stage,” and Royce Da 5’9 summed up their collective feelings in two words: “We’re excited.” And now, in a video interview with rap website Real Talk NY on Thursday, group member Joe Budden weighed in. “This group was put together for a reason, and we had a lot of things in common,” said the Jersey City-bred MC, poised in front of a mixing console in an undisclosed recording studio. “And we were passionate about a lot of things that it just so happened that Eminem [was] just as passionate about.” According to Budden, the deal with Shady Records took “a little over a year.” Typically, recording contracts don’t take nearly that long to hammer out. He attributed the length of the process to members of Slaughterhouse already being industry veterans with separate careers, and the fact that their 2009 self-titled LP sold well, perhaps giving the group leverage in negotiating their contract. “We didn’t send a demo in,” he said. “We was four pretty much established artists that have been around for a little bit so … we put out an album that did well, that sold 85 percent of what we shipped.” Despite how long the deal took, Budden said Shady was the label Slaughterhouse wanted to align itself with ever since the group was consummated in 2008. “Very early on, the four of us agreed that Shady would be the best place for the group to be,” he said, “before our first album was finished.” In very unspecific terms, Budden mentioned Royce Da 5’9’s past relationship with Eminem being a factor in the deal getting done. The Detroit natives collaborated often in their early careers, but had a falling out in the early aughts. Royce famously warred with Eminem’s D12 crew on countless tracks over the years, until finally reconciling with Slim Shady in 2008. “It was way too much sh– that went into it,” Joe said of the Shady signing. “It was very deep.” On camera, visibly weary of talking about what may have slowed the deal down, Budden instead tried to focus on the positive. “Just the fact that Em is so passionate about the project,” he said. “It’s one thing to get a record deal, and it’s one thing to get a record deal with someone who gets it. And he gets it. So it’s something we’re all excited about and we can’t wait to get in.” Related Photos Eminem And The New Shady Records Family Related Artists Joe Budden Slaughterhouse Eminem

Kim Kardashian’s Single Got ‘Huge’ Response At Tao

A source at Kim’s New Year’s Eve party says the reality-TV star’s debut single is a club banger. By Jocelyn Vena Kim Kardashian celebrates New Years Eve at Tao in Las Vegas on Friday Photo: Denise Truscello Kim Kardashian is getting some good buzz after previewing the music she’s been working on with The-Dream . When she partied 2010 away at Tao in Las Vegas on Friday night, she surprised the crowd with her first tune, tentatively titled “Turn It Up.” A source told MTV News that the song had the club going bananas. “Oh my god! [The response was] huge,” the source said. “People wanted an encore and the DJ only played it once, but they wanted to hear it again. She was singing along and dancing with it. She wasn’t singing over a track, she wasn’t performing for the guests.” After the DJ made the announcement that he was about to play the song, Kim had a little fun. “Kim, as if she was a normal clubgoer, she was just singing along. She didn’t debut it with a performance. She introduced it, but she wasn’t singing it over a track.” The debut at Tao will also appear in the song’s Hype Williams-directed video, the insider said. The source added that Kim’s camp has described the song as sounding like “back-in-the-day Jennifer Lopez … a little bit of a Jennifer Lopez feel.” “It’s totally a dance song,” the source explained. “It’s good and it definitely sounds like her in my mind. You know it’s her voice. She definitely can sing.” So, what is Kim singing about on the song? Another partygoer recalled the lyrics as being: “It’s going down/ Heading straight to the front of the line/ On the fly, on the floor I can’t stand still/ I am going to work like I am paying my bills/ Party, and party some more/ Rose up in the air, feeling good, feeling great.” On the chorus, this source told us, Kardashian sings something like, “Turn it up/ Turn it up so I can rock the night away, away/ I’mma burn it up tonight it’s going down/ By live via satellite/ All I’m seeing angels in my eyes.” Related Photos Kim Kardashian Rocks Tao On New Year’s Eve Related Artists The-Dream

Ginnifer Goodwin Engaged To Joey Kern

‘We couldn’t be happier than to celebrate our engagement over the holidays with our families,’ actors tells People. By Aly Semigran Ginnifer Goodwin and Joey Kern Photo: Jeff Vespa/ Getty Ginnifer Goodwin has had to endure love the hard way on the big and small screen (“He’s Just Not That Into You,” “Big Love”), but now the actress is getting to enjoy the real deal offscreen with the announcement of her engagement to actor Joey Kern. Goodwin, 32, and Kern, 34, confirmed to People magazine that they got engaged on Christmas Eve. “We couldn’t be happier than to celebrate our engagement over the holidays with our families,” they said in a statement. The pair began dating in 2008 after being set up by a mutual friend. Kern (best known for roles in movies such as “Cabin Fever” and “Super Troopers”) asked for Goodwin’s hand earlier in December. An unnamed source told Us Weekly, “Joey emailed all his friends back on the 12th and gave them the good news.” According to E! News , Kern made the engagement even more notable by popping the question with a ring that he had designed himself. In addition to getting ready for their impending nuptials (the two are planning a fall 2011 wedding), Goodwin, who previously dated “American Pie” actor Chris Klein, will head back to work to begin filming the fifth, and final, season of “Big Love,” as well as promoting her upcoming romantic comedy “Something Borrowed.” In the adaptation of Emily Giffin’s chick-lit novel, Goodwin plays a woman who falls for her best friend’s fianc

Lady Gaga To Make Born This Way Announcement New Year’s Eve

‘My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE,’ she writes in a Christmas tweet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year’s Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way. She tweeted over the weekend: “Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM.” The Mother Monster didn’t reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. “This is so darling!” she wrote . “You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!” Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year’s Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said of her plans six months ago. “I’ve been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs , what she plans to announce on New Year’s Eve is a mystery, but we’re sure her fans are counting down the moments. Gaga recently shared that the album will be her “most innovative.” A single is expected in February , and the album will follow shortly thereafter. “[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats,” Gaga said. “I think that lyrically this album is more poetic … It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster.” What do you think Gaga will unveil on New Year’s Eve? Share your guesses in the comments! ‘Tron Legacy’ Is A Virtual Hit At The Weekend Box Office

Disney’s relaunch of the 1980s sci-fi classic soared to the top of the box-office charts, while “Yogi Bear” feasted on a modest second-place snack. By Josh Wigler Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney Twenty-eight years after the first film’s release, the “Tron” franchise is officially back on the gaming grid. Walt Disney Pictures have poured a lot of time, money and effort behind “Tron Legacy,” and it shows: the visceral techno-punk ride relies strongly on big-budget effects and a bass-heavy score from Daft Punk, all of which work on a surface level, but the question remains was it a commercial success? Monetarily, “Legacy” was the weekend’s clear winner, taking home a first-place prize worth $43.6 million. But some have been hesitant to call the result a flat-out victory, given the fact that it cost a reported $170 million to produce the Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde-starring reboot. That price tag doesn’t even account for the various marketing and promotional efforts, which had more to do with “Tron” as a brand and less with the actual movie itself. With so much riding on solid box-office returns, the opening-weekend performance of “Legacy” wasn’t exactly stellar. In comparison, just a year ago James Cameron’s “Avatar” debuted in theaters to a relatively lackluster $77 million opening weekend before going on to rule the box office for several weeks on a successful quest to become the world’s highest-grossing movie of all time. It’s not likely that “Legacy” will meet that same level of success, but with the Christmas holiday season in full effect as of next weekend, the “Tron” sequel could be saved if it shows some serious staying power. Even if “Tron” didn’t set the box office fully ablaze, it was easily the leader of the pack amongst new competition. “Yogi Bear” broke into the picnic basket and came up with a mere $16.7 million, not a surprising turnout given the mostly negative reviews thrown in the family film’s direction. James L. Brooks’ last week’s box-office champ sunk to third place with a relatively disappointing $12.4 million take. Awards-season favorites “The Fighter” and “Black Swan” expanded locations this weekend, and it showed in the numbers: The Mark Wahlberg-starring boxing drama punched out $12.2 million for fourth place while Natalie Portman’s ballet thriller danced up $8.3 million to land in seventh place. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Tron Legacy” ($43.6 million) #2 “Yogi Bear” ($16.7 million) #3 “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($12.4 million) #4 “The Fighter” ($12.2 million) #5 “The Tourist” ($8.7 million) Upcoming Releases It’s Christmas time at the box office next weekend, an occasion marked by the arrival of Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro’s “Little Fockers” on Wednesday alongside the Coen brothers’ latest western, “True Grit.” The competition blows up on Saturday when Jack Black sails onto screens with “Gulliver’s Travels.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy,” “Yogi Bear” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds Share ‘Friendly Meal’

The couple, who announced their split last week, were spotted dining together in New York. By James Montgomery Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur Five days after news of their split was made public, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds reportedly shared a “friendly meal” together in New York. According to People, the couple had dinner at Blue Ribbon on Friday night, and “were smiling and laughing the whole time.” “They just wanted to connect and have a friendly chat,” a source told the magazine. “They just wanted to sit down together. The tone was light and fun despite the untruths that the media is working up. They aren’t reconciling. This was just two people who were married being civil and friendly.” Last Tuesday, the couple — who wed in September 2008 — released a joint statement to MTV News announcing that “after long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage. “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it,” the statement continued. “While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” According to several reports, while neither Johansson nor Reynolds has filed for divorce as of yet, the two are living apart. In the days following the announcement of their split, several outlets began speculating that their marriage was done in by “distance” , and that they simply “grew apart under the strain of managing two thriving careers.” Johansson also took a much-publicized trip to Jamaica after the couple announced the end of their relationship, on which she was photographed with friends and reading an issue of Vanity Fair. What do you think of Scarlett and Ryan’s split? Tell us in the comments. Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson

MTV News’ Best Albums Of 2010: The Readers React

MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. And then head over to our Newsroom blog, where you can vote for your favorite album of 2010 . Because, really, I could argue about this stuff all day. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. But it’s not worth ignoring these other artists!” — Tom “I’m happy that Kanye’s number 1 (the album’s super dope), but what about Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager? ” — Mendy “Yeah! Vampire Weekend is in the top 5! YES! Grrreat, Contra is totally amazing. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. People actually think ‘Runaway’ is a great song just because of the lengthy video. That’s Dumb!” — Kenneth “Yo, Kenneth. Chill. We get it. You like music that sells well. You like ‘Glee’ soundtracks, Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls records. That’s cool man … we happen to like music that appeals to us personally and possibly other intelligent, educated people with an ear for more progressive tastes. [It] just so happens, at the end of the year, journalists’ and critics’ lists are going to skew more towards our sensibilities than yours. Don’t worry though man, Susan Boyle is still going to sell 5 million records or whatever. The sun still rises in the morning.” — Yoprince Related Artists Kanye West Eminem Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Mariah Carey Expecting Twins, Nick Cannon Confirms

‘We are having twins,’ Cannon said on his radio show on Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images After accidentally calling her baby bump “they,” Mariah Carey had everyone speculating that she and Nick Cannon were having twins. And on his radio show on Thursday morning (December 16), Cannon confirmed as much. “We are having twins,” he told his listeners. He said that while the couple has been trying to keep details about the pregnancy as private as possible, Carey let the news slip to the president and first lady when she spoke to them backstage at TNT’s “Christmas in Washington 2010” on Sunday. “They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, ‘So, what are you having, are you having twins?’ ” he recalled of the conversation Carey had with the Obamas. “And at this point, she hadn’t told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along. And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the president and first lady that we are having twins.” On Wednesday, Cannon danced around the twins question in an interview. “It’s a touchy issue, because you never want to speak on too much stuff too early, but my wife, at one time, she referred to her stomach as ‘they,’ and that probably wasn’t the wrong thing for her to do,” he said to E! News . “That’s all I’m gonna say.” The couple has yet to reveal the due date, but Carey admitted back in October that finally telling everyone she was pregnant after months of speculation was a “relief.” “I feel like it made everyone else around me a little more relaxed,” she said on Cannon’s radio show about making the announcement. “I feel like they were extra super-cautious about everything, yet not, because they didn’t know they were allowed to be.” Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon
