‘Firework’ singer will be joined by Kenny Chesney on the NBC special, ahead of her ‘Part of Me’ film release. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry may have declared herself a “Firework” on her 2010 Teenage Dream track, but this Fourth of July she’ll perform alongside of them during the “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.” The singer will appear on the annual televised party as the nation blows out the candles on another year. She’ll be joined by Kenny Chesney when it all goes down on Independence Day at 9 p.m. ET. In addition to dazzling performances from Katy and Kenny, the show will also include 25 minutes of fireworks magic composed of 40,000 pyrotechnic shells. “NBC is thrilled to have Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney join us in celebrating America’s birthday,” Doug Vaughan, senior vice president of NBC Entertainment’s Special Programs and Late Night, said in a statement about the 36th installment of the annual special taking place in New York City. “These stars’ powerful voices and stage presence will serve as the perfect complement to Macy’s captivating visual artistry.” The performance couldn’t come at a more perfect time for Perry, who will release her 3-D concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” on July 5. The film is part concert film, part documentary, featuring footage from Perry’s eye-popping California Dreams Tour, as well as candid confessions about her life and vintage video of the pop star. In addition to the film, Perry also recently shot a music video for her Teenage Dream: The Complete Confession track, “Wide Awake.” “It’s the most intimate I’ve ever been,” she told MTV News about the movie . “I mean that in a non-sexual way … I mean it in a vulnerable way. Neil Patrick Harris has been tapped to host the Tony Awards for the third time, according to reports. The actor hosted the annual award show in 2009 and 2011. The 38-year-old How I Met Your Mother star, who will also be serving as a producer on this year’s telecast, confirmed the news in a statement. The 2012 Tony Awards air Sunday, June 10. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this year’s Tony Awards,” he said. “Not only will I be shining a spotlight on the best that Broadway has to offer, but hopefully I’ll score some free house seats to a show – or five!” Probably a fairly safe bet. “Neil is the ultimate showman,” adds CBS Entertainment’s Jack Sussman. “He brings great talent, energy and creativity to the Tony stage and usually a surprise or two. Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Mac Miller have all at one time appeared on the annual cover, and this time out, XXL inducts 10 more artists for the fifth year in a row with their April issue. MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC, Machine Gun Kelly, stands front and center on the cover alongside his Bad Boy labelmate French Montana. Atlanta hitmaker Future and hook master Roscoe Dash also made the cut along with Detroit’s Danny Brown and Memphis, Tennessee, MC Don Trip. While most of this year’s freshmen have been fixtures on various blog sites and the mixtape circuit, others like Macklemore, Hopsin and Kid Ink may be lesser known, but they’ve more than earned their keep. Macklemore has already sold out countless shows across the country, while Kid Ink and Hopsin have built quite a digital following. Australian-born raptress Iggy Azalea makes history as the first female MC to grace the cover of the Freshman issue. The blond-haired Interscope beauty made waves with her 2011 mixtape Ignorant Art and has since hooked up with T.I. to produce her upcoming debut album The New Classic .
