Thriller makes $5.3 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Anthony Hopkins and Marta Gastini in “The Rite” Photo: Warner Bros. It appears that audiences are still down to get freaked out by a creepy performance from Anthony Hopkins. The Oscar-winning actor’s latest skin-crawling, onscreen turn, “The Rite,” topped the Friday box office. The film, which is based on real-life events and stars Hopkins as an unconventional exorcist, debuted with $5.3 million. When MTV News sat down with Sir Hopkins recently, the veteran star admitted he has a gift for freaking out fans. “I know how to do those parts,” he said. “Not because I’m scary, but because I know how to scare people. … It’s a question of being quiet and not overplaying it,” he explained. “You let the script and the audiences do the work for you. You don’t have to play evil.” Behind “The Rite” is last week’s box-office winner, “No Strings Attached. Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman’s portrayal of “sex friends” who shrug off the possibility of a relationship in favor of casual lovin,’ scored $4.3 million. Friday’s earnings kick the film’s total haul to just over $30 million. Jason Statham’s latest firepower-heavy flick ,”The Mechanic,” came in third place. The tale of an assassin looking to avenge the killing of his mentor with the help of his son (Ben Foster), debuted with $3.6 million. “The Green Hornet” took the fourth-place spot at the Friday box office. Moviegoers coughed up $2.9 million to catch Seth Rogen as the classic masked superhero duke it out with Los Angeles-area baddies. The figure kicks the film’s total estimated tally to $70 million. “The King’s Speech,” the dramatization of the UK’s King George VI’s struggle to overcome his stammer with the help of an eccentric speech therapist, rounded out the top five. The film, which recently picked up 12 Academy Award nominations, scored $2.8 million. The movie’s total estimated haul now stands at around $63 million. Anthony Hopkins On ‘The Rite’: ‘I Know How To Scare People’

In new film, Oscar-winner plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas. By Kara Warner Anthony Hopkins Photo: MTV News If Anthony Hopkins fans know anything, it’s the fact that the Oscar-winner knows how to scare the pants off of moviegoers. The obvious, most-famous example is his award-winning turn as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in “Silence of the Lambs” and the subsequent sequels. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Sir Hopkins play dark and devious, but with the release of exorcism thriller “The Rite” on Friday (January 28), fans can reacquaint themselves with a bit of Hopkins’ tricks and treats. In the film, which is based on real-life events, Hopkins plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas. Without delving into spoiler territory — no more than what the creepy promotional posters give away — when MTV News caught up with the actor recently, we asked him to take us through his process of playing possessed. Hopkins explained that most of his performances come from extensive preparation. For “The Rite,” he learned Latin and Italian for certain scenes, and spent a lot of time alone in his hotel room going over the script. “I would be there in my den, my man’s cave, going over and over [the] script,” Hopkins said. “Gradually, as you go through it over and over, all these voices and interpretations come to you,” he explained, adding that by the time he was ready to film the key possession sequences, he knew the material so well he was open to improvisation. “I put all kinds of very suggestive sexual stuff into it which they cut out, but stuff that would provoke people. I knew that the response was good because [director] Mikael H

The Rite’s Mikael Hafstrom on His Exorcism Thriller and the Still-Shelved Shanghai

Director Mikael Hafstrom ( 1408, Derailed ) was initially skeptical of taking on the exorcism thriller The Rite , about a young priest (Colin O’D onoghue) who learns the craft of ghost — okay, demon — busting from Sir Anthony Hopkins in Rome. Then he read the non-fiction book which provided the basis for its story based from American priest (and guest Movieline critic ) Father Gary Thomas, and found that he could bring more to the table than the schlocky thrills found in most other genre offerings.

Movieline Asks Rite Priest Gary Thomas: Which Exorcism Movies Are Most Realistic?

The new Anthony Hopkins exorcism thriller The Rite may be a work of fiction, but it was inspired by the real life experiences of Father Gary Thomas, an American priest who studied under a master exorcist in Rome and became the subject of Matt Baglio’s book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist . Naturally, Movieline seized the chance to ask the energetic Father Gary to play film critic and weigh in on eight possession horror classics, from The Exorcist to Paranormal Activity to Tim Burton’s classic comedy about a lovable “bio-exorcist.”

‘Good Evening’: Anthony Hopkins To Star In Hitchcock Biopic?

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sir Anthony Hopkins, best known as Hannibal Lecter and, of course as Tom Cruise’s boss in Mission: Impossible 2 , is in talks to play the similarly creepy Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The movie will detail the struggles that Hitchcock went through to make Psycho , a film that many thought would capsize his career. Sacha Gervasi, helmer of the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil , is in talks to direct. I think Anthony Hopkins could make a great Hitchcock, so long as he starts packing on the pounds. Sir Tony is a pretty slight fella, and Hitchcock was one of our more porcine directors. Just a thought! [ THR ]

‘American Idol’ Fan Anthony Hopkins Loves Randy Jackson’s ‘Soul’

‘He’s so fair with everyone,’ the ‘Rite’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Anthony Hopkins Photo: MTV News Anthony Hopkins is a veteran actor of the stage and screen and an Oscar winner knighted by the queen of England for his services to the arts. With so many movies to make and other important, knightly things to do, one would never think of Sir Hopkins as a super-fan of “American Idol” — yet he is. We had heard that he was a fan back in 2009, so much so that he’d happily star in a movie version of the singing reality competition . So when MTV News caught up with the esteemed thespian while he promoted his upcoming exorcism thriller “The Rite,” we had to ask if he were excited about the show’s season 10 premiere Wednesday (January 19). ” ‘American Idol’? Oh, yeah, I love all those [talent shows],” he said. “Somebody says they’re ‘chewing gum for the mind,’ but they’re entertaining. … My wife makes me watch them; I don’t,” he joked before admitting that he and his wife TiVo every episode. “I went to one or two of the shows and met Simon Cowell,” he revealed. “Somebody I really like is Randy Jackson. We became friends, although I don’t see much of him. I think we invited him to the premiere of [‘The Rite’].” Hopkins went on to say that he likes Jackson’s spirit and did a little impression of the veteran “Idol” judge’s trademark phrase. “He’s a terrific guy. I love his soul,” Hopkins said. ” ‘Hey, dawg!’ I think he’s terrific. I love his compassion, because he’s so fair with everyone.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET.
