Missy Elliott’s ‘Eavesdropping’ Led To Monica’s ‘So Gone’

‘I’m embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,’ Monica tells MTV News of New Life album. By Rob Markman Monica Photo: MTV News Monica may have titled her latest album New Life, but there are some things the velvety-voiced singer wanted to keep the same — including her working relationship with Missy Elliott . ” New Life was just me saying, ‘This is the place that I’m at and I’m embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,’ ” she told MTV News on Tuesday (April 10). The duo have worked together for years, and in 2003, they came up with one of Monica’s most memorable songs to date: “So Gone.” It’s a chemistry that neither wants to abandon anytime soon. “Missy is one of my dearest friends, and I think her humility and her compassion for other people is what makes her music so great,” Monica said. The bond that both women share is the reason they yield such memorable results. “Knock Knock,” “A Dozen Roses (Remind Me of You)” and the Grammy-nominated “Everything to Me” are just a few of the records on which they’ve collaborated. Monica counts “So Gone” as her favorite to date. “She wrote that record after eavesdropping on my phone conversation,” Monica recalled, laughing. “So when you think about things like that, that can only be done by somebody that’s very close to you.” Elliott didn’t write Monica’s lyrics — Jazmine Sullivan gets credit for that — but Missy did produce the breakup ode. The two worked out of Missy’s house in Atlanta and came up with songs that were vocally challenging for the veteran singer. This time, though, there was no eavesdropping. “When it came to ‘Until It’s Gone,’ I probably was just sharing,” Monica laughed. “I was already in a sharing mood.” What’s your favorite song from Monica’s New Life ? ‘American Idol’ Fan Anthony Hopkins Loves Randy Jackson’s ‘Soul’

‘He’s so fair with everyone,’ the ‘Rite’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Anthony Hopkins Photo: MTV News Anthony Hopkins is a veteran actor of the stage and screen and an Oscar winner knighted by the queen of England for his services to the arts. With so many movies to make and other important, knightly things to do, one would never think of Sir Hopkins as a super-fan of “American Idol” — yet he is. We had heard that he was a fan back in 2009, so much so that he’d happily star in a movie version of the singing reality competition . So when MTV News caught up with the esteemed thespian while he promoted his upcoming exorcism thriller “The Rite,” we had to ask if he were excited about the show’s season 10 premiere Wednesday (January 19). ” ‘American Idol’? Oh, yeah, I love all those [talent shows],” he said. “Somebody says they’re ‘chewing gum for the mind,’ but they’re entertaining. … My wife makes me watch them; I don’t,” he joked before admitting that he and his wife TiVo every episode. “I went to one or two of the shows and met Simon Cowell,” he revealed. “Somebody I really like is Randy Jackson. We became friends, although I don’t see much of him. I think we invited him to the premiere of [‘The Rite’].” Hopkins went on to say that he likes Jackson’s spirit and did a little impression of the veteran “Idol” judge’s trademark phrase. “He’s a terrific guy. I love his soul,” Hopkins said. ” ‘Hey, dawg!’ I think he’s terrific. I love his compassion, because he’s so fair with everyone.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Cake Hang Out With Fans And Microphones In New York

Sacramento rockers build anticipation for new album, Showroom of Compassion, at Irving Plaza. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea and Xan McCurdy perform in New York on Tuesday Photo: Joey Foley/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Cake are the kind of band it’s easy to think you know well — songs like “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” and their “I Will Survive” cover still pop up regularly in ads and soundtracks — and easy to love for their blend of regular-guy sound with clever lyrics and off-beat instrumentation. But in concert, anyone who, say, owns only four of their albums, will never be mistaken for a diehard. No, the superfans know every single word of every early album deep cut. Still, when the cult faves hit Irving Plaza on Tuesday night, frontman John McCrea made sure everyone felt like they belonged. Dressed in a fedora, T-shirt, hoodie and rugged jacket, the bearded McCrea looked like a buddy you’d just invited over for a beer in your Brooklyn living room. After kicking off the show with 2001’s “Comfort Eagle” and a couple of tracks from their upcoming new album, Showroom of Compassion, the singer launched into a deadpan banter that really made it feel like he was everyone’s friend too. “We are just hanging out together, with the tree and microphones,” McCrea said, pointing to the small evergreen onstage that he later gave away to an audience member — part of an old Cake concert tradition. When one fan got a little too comfortable with the band and threw a paper airplane missive at the stage, McCrea gently reminded her, “I can’t really read long notes right now; I’m kind of playing a show.” Mixed in with several of the new Compassion songs — which stick to the trademark Cake sound of head-nodding rhythm, nasally guitar and Vince DeFiore’s brilliant trumpet solos, occasionally punctuated by McCrea on the vibraslap — were a whole lot of the favorites. The pleasantly small, sold-out venue was filled with the sound of fans singing along with the likes of “Frank Sinatra,” “Say It All” and “Friend Is a Four Letter Word.” “Congratulations to all of you singing along, you just got the equivalent of a beer from endorphins,” McCrea said after a rousing rendition of “Sheep Go to Heaven.” And they weren’t just singing with the classics. During the encore, following their cover of “War Pigs,” when the band at last performed new single “I’m So Sick of You,” McCrea began directing everyone as a choir. One side of the room was the “escapists,” who sang “I want to fly away,” while the other side was instructed to chant “I’m so sick of you, so sick of me, I don’t want to be with you.” It was an instant favorite of the happy crowd, but the show’s closer, their 1996 hit “The Distance,” was perfectly calculated to send everyone home humming and smiling. Showroom of Compassion, Cake’s first studio album in six years, is due out on January 11. Related Artists Cake

Maddow Laments That Five Pro-Life GOP US Senate Candidates Have No Rape/Incest Exception

Wow, I didn’t realize this until watching radical left MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s September 16 rant bemoaning the “great, unacknowledged, big honking policy issue of this year’s elections nationwide.” That is, at least 5 Republican , Tea Party -backed US Senate pro-life candidates oppose aborting innocent babies whose fathers are sexual criminals. With Christine O’Donnell of Delaware newly added to the list, the roster includes Sharron Angle of Nevada, Ken Buck of Colorado, Joe Miller of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky. This is as it should be, which I’m thrilled to know. This must have pro-aborts quaking. They have managed for decades to get Americans to go along with 100% of abortions by appealing to their compassion for mothers impregnated by rapists and family members, whose abortions account for no more than 1.5% of all, according to Guttmacher . Many pro-life politicians, including President Bush , have caved on this point, which is contradictory. Either all preborns are human beings, or they’re not. If they are, they must all be protected. In fact, abortion protects rapists, particularly friends and family. A prime example would be the imaginary victim Maddow described, a “14-yr-old girl who is raped by your uncle, or by your father.” Even Joycelyn Elders , President Clinton’s pro-abort attorney general, stated pregnancy is evidence of sexual abuse. Abortion destroys the evidence. Who doesn’t think the 1st thing a victimizing uncle or father would do is take the pregnant 14-yr-old for an abortion? Click to enlarge… Almost every time I write on the topic of rape and pregnancy I refer to this excellent article pointing to the only study ever done on this topic. It found first that 75-85% of mothers impregnated by rape do not abort. Abortion should not be presumed in these cases. It concluded that mothers who abort their babies following rape are psychologically worse off than those who did not. One reason is abortion is also a violent act; many rape victims reported they felt like it was “medical rape.” Mothers who did not abort felt they were helping good come from evil and in a sense conquering their rape. Themselves having been victimized, they did not want to victimize their baby. This is yet another great political development in a year full of great political developments in our fight to protect innocent preborn life.
