Due to leg spasms and muscle pain, Aretha Franklin was unable to attend Whitney Houston’s funeral on Saturday, canceling not only her appearance but a planned performance in honor of her goddaughter, as well. But the late legend was very much in Franklin’s thoughts the evening before, as she played a concert for fans at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and honored Houston with a pair of covers. “Remember the hits and forget the misses,” Aretha told the crowd. “I’ll always look back and remember her singing…” And, with that, Franklin broke into a rendition of “I Will Always Love.” Watch it and a version of “The Greatest Love of All” now: Aretha Franklin Covers “I Will Always Love You” Aretha Franklin Covers “The Greatest Love of All”
Lindsay Lohan has been hit or miss with her appearance lately – see WTF-worthy mob wife look last week – but there’s no denying that this falls under “hit.” LOVE Magazine, which apparently exists, just released some hot pics from its new issue, showing Lindsanity in various states of undress at the Chateau Marmont. Standard procedure for Lindsay, really. This is just what she does. The delightful weekly Lindsay Lohan photos showcasing her surprisingly large chest in various positions were taken by famed photographer Terry Richardson. Rocking some flawless hair and makeup, and showing off her assets from several different angles, Lindsay looks great as Richardson always brings out the best. One has to imagine that, wearing an Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra sweater, LiLo’s making a subtle play for the Lifetime Taylor biopic she’s been rumored for. ‘What he did at his height, he was brilliant,’ Run tells MTV News of ‘Soul Train’ legend. By Rob Markman There will never be another Don Cornelius . With his television show “Soul Train,” the iconic producer and host put audiences on to the latest music, fashion and dance steps every week. Artists like Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Run-DMC all took to Cornelius’ stage and delivered some pretty memorable performances. Cornelius was found dead in his Los Angeles home after police responded to a shooting call on Wednesday. While the cause of death has not been established, multiple outlets have reported that it appears to have been a suicide. In the wake of his death, the “Soul Train” host has remembered by many in the music community, including Rev Run, who spoke to MTV News on Thursday (February 2) about Cornelius’ impact. “What he did at his height, he was brilliant. He was the Jay-Z of his time,” Run said. “He was cool. He was the coolest of the people dancing in his crowd.” Love, Peace and “Soul”: Don Cornelius Remembered in Photos Run recalled watching the show as a kid and seeing iconic performances by Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye. The rap icon was such of fan of Cornelius’ “Soul Train” that when he finally appeared on the show in the 1980s with his group RUN-DMC DMC, the magnitude of his appearance didn’t quite sink in. “As a kid, before I had any experience in it — Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye — it was just cool; it was just big,” Run said, still humbled by his appearance on the show more than 30 years later. “I was happier watching it from home. … It was bigger than me and more cooler than me.” The “Run’s House” star marveled at Cornelius’ contributions to pop culture. “Not only was he a great businessman, but he brought us what the cool was,” Rev Run said. “He knew James Brown and Marvin Gaye, he’d knock on their bedroom door and say come do my show. Well connected, he was the man, like I said, Jay-Z.” Share your condolences with Don Cornelius’ friends and family, as well as you favorite “Soul Train” memories on our Facebook page.
Lindsay Lohan was back in court yesterday for yet another appearance before the judge, and she brought her sweet big sweater puppies along with her. Apparently the judge was impress with how well she’s been doing and told her to keep up the good work. One look at those mounds and any judge would be quick to let this hottie go, but not before sitting in on a private viewing of her strip search of course. How does one go about becoming a judge?
The campaign of Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is scrambling to put some of his recent remarks in context amid accusations of racism. As Speaker of the House in the early 90s, welfare reform was one of his signature issues, and improving poverty in America is part of his stump speech. Though his comments are not always politically correct or well received by some groups, Newt doesn’t hold back when it comes to ethnic communities. Such was the case yesterday in Plymouth, N.H.: Newt Gingrich Food Stamp Comment “And so I’m prepared if the NAACP invites me, I’ll go to their convention and talk about why the African American community should demand paychecks, not be satisfied with food stamps,” Gingrich said on a campaign visit. If Gingrich wins the Republican nomination (an increasingly unlikely outcome), “I will make the key test very simple – food stamps versus paychecks.” “Obama is the best food stamp president in American history. More people are on food stamps today because of Obama’s policies than ever in history,” he said. “I would like to be the best paycheck president in American history.” Gingrich stirred controversy last month over his comments about poor children having no work habits or people around them to teach them how to work. He suggested that some school janitors should be fired and children should work part time within their school for money and “pride in their community.” The Gingrich campaign immediately responded to criticism, saying his NAACP comments were an effort to reach out to the African American community. The Gingrich campaign pointed to Gingrich’s book Real Change, in which Gingrich was critical of President Bush’s “failure to address the NAACP.” The 68-year-old said it was a “clear signal to the African American community that Republicans did not see them as worthy of engagement in dialogue.” Gingrich said he would reach out to any ethnic community that would listen. “There’s no neighborhood I know of in America where if you went around and asked people, ‘Would you rather your children had food stamps or paychecks? You would end up with a majority saying they’d rather have a paycheck.” Blowing smoke? Telling it like it is? Offensive? Refreshing? You tell us.
Katy Perry’s parents are conservative Christian ministers, so you would assume they would be devastated by her divorce. If so, they’re definitely not showing it. It’s been reported that Russell Brand filed for divorce in large part so Katy, who was raised in a devout Christian household, wouldn’t have to do so. God works in mysterious ways, though, and in the eyes of Katy’s parents, her recent split from Russell is one of those ways. Say what now? Because He used to the divorce to fill the rafters of their church, they say. Pastors Keith and Mary Hudson preached at Church On The Rise in Westlake, Ohio, on Wednesday, in an appearance advertised by the church. Perry’s mom, Mary, speaking for the first time about the split, half-joked, “I’m sure Katy is trending on the internet just to get you to church tonight.” “All over the world, who knows how God is bringing them in? The most important thing is you are here and God wants to put the fire in you in 2012.” It is a solid glass-half-full attitude if nothing else. Perry’s dad Keith added, “What has taken place in my daughter’s life has opened many opportunities to go in and be with guarded and gated people.” “God has given us a new platform to go in and meet people – and they like us because you know what, we are cool. We are not threatening.” They do actually sound pretty cool. SIDE NOTE / FUN FACT: Katheryn Elizbaeth Hudson uses her mom’s maiden name, Perry, because she felt Katy Hudson would be confused with Kate Hudson. According to reports, a video was shown beforehand featuring the Hudsons with Katy. The Hudsons are scheduled to appear tomorrow at a church in Georgia. This video (below) is posted on the church’s site promoting the appearance: Katy Perry With Her Parents
Some people like Skyrim . Some people don’t. From what I can tell, the difference between the two groups lies in their interest (or lack there of) in wandering around in a virtual landscape that earnestly attempts to recreate the appearance “the real world”, while occasionally fudging with reality a bit, with things like dragons and the ability to shoot fire out of your hands. We all saw it coming. “Basketball Wives” stars Jennifer Williams and Evelyn Lozada are no longer friends. The first signs of the BFF split happened on camera when Jen badmouthed Evelyn’s fiance Ochocinco during a radio interview. Many months – and several subliminal tweets – later, Jen has confirmed our suspicions. She told radio host TT Torrez : On her relationship with Evelyn Lozada I don’t think it;s any surprise that we don’t speak. If you follow me on Twitter, I don’t do subliminal tweets. I don’t throw jabs at my friends. I just kind of feel like even if we’re not speaking or whatever the case is, if you have my phone number, just text me or whatever. I don’t feel the need to put stuff on Twitter. I kind of use Twitter for whats it’s supposed to be for like networking, but it is what it is. Yeah, she threw a couple of jabs at me on Twitter and I’m not entertaining it because I don’t feel like that’s the arena to do so. I don’t have a problem with her. She has one with me. I definitely think there’s a bigger issue, but you guys will have to tune into Season 4 to figure it out. On whether she sees herself being friends with Evelyn ever again Anything is possible, to be honest with you. The whole reason why we’re not speaking, I think is really trivial. And I feel like there’s a bigger issue, but honestly, I don’t have a problem with Evelyn, she has a problem with me and at this point I’m like, Listen, whatever your problem is, I can’t be bothered. I’m trying to do bigger and better things. I am at a point in my life where I’m getting rid of all the negative energy in my life, including my soon-to-be ex. So my thing is like, nobody is exempt at this point and if you bring some negative energy and drama in my life, I am good.
