Al Pacino Thanks Rappers For ‘Scarface’ Revival

‘I think they’ve helped us tremendously,’ actor tells MTV News of hip-hop community’s support of 1983 movie. By Rob Markman Al Pacino Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Hard to believe, but when Brian De Palma’s “Scarface” was released in 1983, it wasn’t the beloved cult classic it is now. Critics panned the underworld drama in which actor Al Pacino played Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who went from dishwasher to cocaine drug lord. Today, the film lives in infamy with its ultra-violent-yet-indelible scenes and quotable one-liners like “Say hello to my little friend.” Most of the appreciation and film’s support has come from rappers, a fact not lost on Pacino. “The hip-hop people and the rappers got together and they made a video and they talked about the movie. I don’t think anybody’s ever talked about it as articulately and clearly. I understood it better having heard them talk about it,” Pacino told MTV News on the red carpet for a party celebrating the Blu-ray release for “Scarface” on Tuesday night. “I mean, they really get it and they understand it, and that’s a great thing. They’ve been very supportive all these years. I think they’ve helped us tremendously.” The documentary Pacino referred to is 2003’s “Scarface: Origins of a Hip-Hop Classic.” In it, rappers like Diddy, Nas and Snoop Dogg analyze the movie’s impact. The 71-year-old actor likens rap’s affinity for his film with his appreciation for the 1932 original version of “Scarface.” “When I saw it for the first time — and I don’t mean mine, I mean Paul Muni’s from [the] 1930s — I had that feeling about it too,” he said. “Anything when the hero is just reaching for something.” Ultimately, Pacino believes the appeal of his character lies in his desire to make something out of nothing — a mantra rappers have been preaching since the 1980s. “Man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for? That’s a great expression, and I think that’s Tony Montana,” Pacino poetically explained. “Reaching for something he can’t get but he keeps going. There is an element of hope in it, believe it or not.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scarface.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Fighting children’s cancer – Hollywood in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Russian prime minister is used to taking to the stage, but this time it was not for one of his speeches. Vladimir Putin made his audience sit up and take note, as he sang at a charity fundraiser. The reception at an ice stadium in St. Petersburg was dedicated to fighting children’s cancer. International celebrities including Kevin Costner, Gerard Depardieu, Mickey Rourke, Sharon Stone, Kurt Russell, Vincent Cassel, Monica Belucci, Ornella Muti, Goldie Hawn and many others attended the benefit concert. Many of the stars are actively involved in charity work which draws needed attention to children’s oncological and ophthalmological diseases. When the hostess approached Putin’s table and asked him to sing for the audience, his immediate reaction was “are you kidding me?” But the hostess was determined to get the prime minister on the mic and reminded him about the songs he sang with the Russian sleeper agents extradited from the US last summer. Putin attempted to evade the proposal by saying that the singing she was referring to had come from the heart. However, after seeing the pictures of ill children shown to the audience on the big screen, he took to the stage. “Like the majority of people I cannot – but do like to sing and to play – so you’ll have to rough it,” he warned as he sat at the piano and played the beginning of Blueberry Hill. The tune was immediately caught by Maceo Parker’s jazz band. The prime minister then took the mic and sang it in English himself. Putin returned to the piano to sing in Russian “From What the Homeland Starts” – the song he sang with the exposed Russian agents. The audience loved his performance and showed their appreciation with a standing ovation and applause. Many recorded the one man show on their mobile phones. On December 1, Putin confessed to US chat show host Larry King that he does study some songs in English with his language tutor. When the concert was over Putin took Sharon Stone by the arm and together with other guests they went on stage to sing a Russian song about cosmonauts, “Grass Near Home”. Martyn Andrews, our entertainment expert and host of RT's cultural program “Moscow Out,” thinks that Putin’s gesture at the charity event is great for his reputation, as he’s mostly stereotyped as cold and serious. “It’s not the first time he sung like that,” Andrews said. “The more he does things like this, the more people can connect with their leader.” added by: MotherForTruth

Britney Spears ‘Glee’ Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers. By James Dinh Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of “Glee” Photo: FOX Madonna’s “Glee” tribute episode might have been titled “The Power of Madonna,” but it was the show’s tribute to Britney Spears that reigned supreme. The broadcast, which featured cameos from the pop princess herself, drew 13.3 million viewers, leading the 8 p.m. hour and posting its best-ever rating among adults 18-49. Tuesday night’s episode, appropriately titled “Britney/Brittany,” had a 5.8 rating and rose 4 percent from last week’s season-two premiere . The feat made history for “Glee,” as it becomes the first series since NBC’s “Seinfeld” in 1993 to debut as the top series of the week and then spike in ratings the following week, according to Entertainment Weekly. The episode, which highlighted Heather Morris’ character Brittany S. Pearce, revolved around the McKinley High students’ fight to perform Britney Spears numbers. Through anesthesia-induced sequences, the Gleeks tapped into their inner pop star to perform renditions of the singer’s hits, including ” … Baby One More Time” and “Me Against the Music.” In addition to Spears’ appearances on the hit Fox show, the singer took to Twitter during the West Coast premiere to thank fans for campaigning in support of the episode. “I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!” she tweeted. The pop princess also gave props to the many song and video re-creations, including “I’m a Slave 4 U” saying, “Slave: Oh … My … God …! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job.” Spears’ manager, Adam Leber , also showed his appreciation for the episode, which spawned multiple trending topics on Twitter. “So glad you guys loved the GLEE episode! The Overwhelming worldwide response has been insane.3 of the top 10 worldwide trending topics.Sick! Big big big thank you to Ryan Murphy, the incredible cast and Brit’s fans for making it happen….” After such success, it wouldn’t be surprising if the rumors of a second Spears-devoted episode came true, since “Britney/Brittany” only included hits from the first few years of the singer’s career. 30 Seconds To Mars Say ‘Hurricane’ Video Will Be ‘Sexual’

Band will release clip after live film ‘This Is War’ is completed. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Roughly an hour before 30 Seconds To Mars strode onto the VMA stage to humbly accept their award for Best Rock Video , they walked the white carpet outside the Nokia Theater, where they were just as humble, if not slightly agog by everything happening around them. “We’re feeling good, kind of amazed,” 30STM frontman Jared Leto told MTV News. “Really, this is all a surprise to us. We’re just happy that people are responding to the work; this whole thing has been fun and crazy and chaotic.” While they were wide-eyed by all the VMA action — and an ill-advised “glitter bomb” that took place at the top of the carpet — they were ready to discuss business … namely, how they would follow the VMA-winning video for “Kings And Queens” and the jaw-dropping live clip for “Closer To The Edge.” From the sound of things, they’ve got a pretty good plan. “The next thing you will see is the completion of [the live film] ‘This Is War’ finally,” Leto said. “And a new video for a song — this is a scoop — for a song called ‘Hurricane.’ [The video] is very, very, very, very sexual.” We imagine members of 30STM’s Echelon will be very excited to see both of those things, and we suspect fans of Leto will get behind anything involving him and the word “sexual.” There’s no word on just when the band plans on filming the video for “Hurricane,” which at one point featured a cameo by Kanye West , but we’ll definitely keep you posted. Kanye West Earns Fans’ ‘Respect’ With ‘Runaway’

‘The song and performance were refreshing and real,’ one reader writes about ‘Ye’s VMA set. By James Dinh Kanye West performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Kanye West took an uncharacteristically modest stance at the 2010 Video Music Awards when he debuted his new track “Runaway.” His “toast to the douche bags” around the world garnered mixed reviews from MTV News readers but seemed to earn a lot of fans’ respect. Slimbodygal couldn’t help but give props to Yeezy for his seemingly self-deprecating lyrics : “Love this song!!! I have to give credit and have respect for anyone who recognizes when they are all those things he said in the song. At least he is not in denial like most people that are. I have to admit I can be an A hole at times, toasting myself!!!!” Musictomyears felt the VMA performance was a good first step back into America’s hearts: “It was the night’s only standing ovation. Strategically, if this doesn’t work, I don’t know what will. But based on the crowd’s reaction, it appears to have done the trick. It was a Kanye lovefest.” Even those who weren’t necessarily a fan of “Runaway” said Kanye did a great job of conveying the song’s message. “Lyrics were pretty clear to me, sounds like he’s calling himself out, saying he screws up like most of us do,” MTV News reader Travis wrote. “I would not necessarily call myself a fan but I respect his talent. With the media trying to pit him and Swift against each other , he showed a little refinement. The song and performance were refreshing and real. Maybe even redemption to some.” MTV News reader Angelica had a change of heart about the MC: “This song showed me that he hasn’t forgotten who he is and that he doesn’t sit on a high horse as we all thought he did. … Much respect.” But when it came to down West’s performance, Flip10 couldn’t help compare the rapper’s performance with Taylor Swift’s performance of “Innocent.” Admitting his appreciation for both acts’ honesty, he wrote: “Kanye tried too hard. I’m not gonna lie, I can’t stand Taylor Swift, but every word to her song was the truth. She speaks her mind, and so does Kanye. I respect that. We need more people like that. I hate the ‘cookie cutter’ singers.” Fkiawu wasn’t satisfied with ‘Ye’s song: “I’m sorry but this song was just awful! Why the hell would I or anyone else want to make a toast to douche bags, scumbags and a–holes?! If that’s the case, we might as well replace President Obama with The Situation. It’s just a very stupid idea.” A big-time Yeezy fan was offended that others weren’t able to comprehend the song’s subject matter, writing, “He has issues and everyone knows that but anyone who possesses a little common sense would see both him and Taylor’s performances were in reference to what happened,” Makesha wrote. “Did you all listen to what Taylor was saying in her song?? If she could forgive him who are any of you to say anything!” Do you think “Runaway” conveyed the proper message to fans? Sound off below! The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Pras Explains Endorsing Wyclef Presidential Rival

‘The reality is we need a real leader … a transformative leader,’ onetime Fugees bandmate tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Pras Photo: MTV News Wyclef Jean has now formally announced to fanfare that he’ll run for the presidency of Haiti . But for all of the support coming his way, the musician didn’t manage to receive the endorsement of one of his former Fugees groupmembers. Pras has endorsed rival candidate Michel Martelly, telling MTV News on Friday (August 6) that Martelly is better equipped to revive the ravaged country. Pras stressed his appreciation for Wyclef’s efforts to aid Haiti but said he simply thinks his friend would be in over his head. “Basically, I went down to Haiti yesterday to endorse a friend of mine named Michel Martelly. He’s an ex-musician, very, very popular down in Haiti,” Pras explained. “He used to go by the name “Sweet Micky.” “Listen, I love Wyclef to death, he continued. “We came up together, we grew up together, we basically called each other cousins. But the reality is this, we need a real leader. Not just a regular leader, but a transformative leader. Someone that’s gonna be able to galvanize the Haitians down on the field, the Haitian-Americans, the international community, it’s a collective support — to take this country to the 21st century. And I’m just not convinced Wyclef is the one for that.” Pras was particularly effusive in praising Wyclef for bringing global attention to Haiti in the wake of the country’s debilitating earthquake this past January. “But that does not mean he can become the next president of Haiti,” Pras said. ‘Clef formally declared his run for president during an appearance Thursday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president,” Wyclef said in the interview, “then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” He pushed his political neutrality as an asset; Haiti has long been dominated by corrupt government regimes. Pras said he became aware in July that Wyclef had Haiti’s elections on his mind, though he didn’t think his friend would seriously contemplate running himself. Rather, Pras thought Wycelf would endorse his own uncle, who has served in an ambassador post to Haiti, in Washington D.C., in the past. Pras also revealed he hadn’t spoken directly to Wyclef before he made public his endorsement of Martelly. Representatives for Wyclef had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. What do you think of Pras endorsing Wyclef’s rival for the Haitian presidency? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Pras Wyclef Jean

Big East Commish Says It With Flowers, Uncomfortable Imagery

The Big East owes its barely-beating heart to, of all things, the survival of the Big 12. Dan Beebe’s television money and back-room machinations saved more than just his own conference from extinction: In the post-apocalyptic landscape following massive realignment, weaker conferences would be sold off for spare parts, likelier than not. So forgive Big East commish John Marinatto for getting a bit fluttery in his rush to express his thanks: Marinatto showed his appreciation with a small gesture. His office sent 10 red and 10 white roses to Beebe and the Big 12 conference with a card that simply read “Unity.” Somebody’s got daughters of Twilight age! (Wanting to remain topical, Big Ten honcho Jim Delany immediately dispatched a bevy of strippers dressed as leprechauns to Notre Dame, while USC AD Mike Garrett arranged for the delivery of a magnificent bouquet of live, angry bees to the home of Reggie Bush.)
