Lee Dewyze Gets Back In The ‘American Idol’ Race With ‘That’s Life’

‘If this was the last night of performances, you would have won this whole thing,’ Ellen says on Sinatra Night. By Larry Carroll Lee Dewyze on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox When Frank Sinatra sang “That’s Life,” the song became a masterpiece, a devil-may-care case study in the art of cool, careless crooning about enduring the bad days. On Tuesday night (May 4), Lee Dewyze made the song his own, simultaneously conquering his own demons and the specter of the Chairman of the Board. The spiky-haired “American Idol” dark horse took on a signature tune from Ol’ Blue Eyes for the show, with necktie appropriately undone. Accompanied on a Hammond organ by mentor Harry Connick Jr., Dewyze straddled the top of the instrument as if paying tribute to the bar-embracing persona of Sinatra, backed by a bluesy band. Although feisty Frank likely wouldn’t have endorsed Dewyze’s untucked shirt, he could surely appreciate the way the 26-year-old Illinois singer poured himself into lines like “Each time I find myself flat on my face/ I pick myself up and get back in the race.” With the performance, Dewyze undoubtedly put himself back into the heat of the “Idol” race. “If this was the last night of performances,” judge Ellen Degeneres beamed with approval, “you would have won this whole thing.” “You gave it a 110 percent,” Simon Cowell agreed. “It was the best performance of the night.” “Another great arrangement by a Louisiana boy,” Randy Jackson said of Connick’s efforts. “You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” “You can win this thing,” Kara DioGuardi said, before urging Dewyze to go home and write down “I can win this thing” 100 times. Originally composed by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon for Sinatra’s album of the same name, “That’s Life” was a huge hit when it debuted in 1966. In the years since, the song has been covered by everyone from Bono to Aretha Franklin to David Lee Roth, and now, perhaps the next American Idol. What did you think of Lee’s performance? Siobhan Magnus Eliminated On ‘American Idol’

Michael Lynche and Casey James join her in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Siobhan Magnus on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox It’s getting to that point in season nine of “American Idol” when it gets hard to guess who is going to go home every week because the competition has gotten so tight. But a night after Simon Cowell compared her tortured screaming to the sound of a woman giving birth, America decided that it wasn’t quite ready for an “Idol” champ as quirky as tattooed glassblower Siobhan Magnus. After charming the judges and voting public with her offbeat style sense, powerhouse vocals and sometimes sassy backtalk to the judges, Magnus’ luck ran out after she closed Tuesday’s show with an all-over-the-place take on Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine.” Magnus was given the boot on a night that was packed with performances from Rascal Flatts, Shakira and Lady Antebellum, and her exit came after more than 33 million votes were lodged Tuesday. The results began with host Ryan Seacrest creating three groups of two. The first pairing included Magnus and Lee Dewyze, followed by Casey James and Michael Lynche and then Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox. Cutting the tension immediately, Seacrest walked Magnus across the stage to stand next to Lynche and James, announcing the trio as the bottom three. The first singer sent back to safety was Lynche, who dodged a bullet for the second time this season. “Tonight is different because everyone did well last night, so there’s no shame in the bottom three,” he said before being sent back to the couches. With James safe, that left the woman Seacrest called an “independent spirit” standing center stage in her salmon-colored miniskirt-and-tank-top combo. Saying she tried out for the show for her little sisters, Magnus hoped that she had a big impact on her siblings. “I did my best, and I hope that I was able to show them what we’re all capable of,” she said, clearly holding back some emotion. Keeping her composure, Magnus went out with a typically sassy run through Aretha Franklin’s “Think,” which got the final five and the whole audience on their feet and clapping along. It ended, of course, with one of her signature ear-piercing screams and then some hugs for her family, who told her, “You’re still our star.” This being a country-themed week, the show kicked off with a live performance from twangy trio Rascal Flatts, who played their cowboy-pop ditty “Unstoppable.” Along with the usual time-killing Ford video and some other promotional shenanigans, the first half of the show also featured season-four “Idol” superstar Carrie Underwood flying in from her national tour just to introduce her current opening act, the little-known brotherly band Sons of Sylvia. Bringing a harder edge new-wave country vibe than they displayed during their winning run last year on “The Next Great America Band,” the all-black-clad Clark brothers played their debut single, “Love Left to Lose.” The tune mixed straightforward radio rock with country touches, including fiddle, mandolin and rocked-out resonator guitar over a thudding backbeat. With a whole hour to fill, the next break featured ACM winners Lady Antebellum performing their triple-platinum smash “Need You Now.” The Fleetwood Mac-like ballad of romantic longing that has helped propel the album of the same name to the best sales figures of any 2010 release found singers Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott trading off yearning vocals as third member Dave Haywood played along on a grand piano in the background. The night’s final performance was a truly odd combo, as hip-shaker Shakira was joined by Flatts for the spare belly-dance/ boot-scooter “Gypsy,” which she opened by showing off her harmonica skills. Joined by two dancers, Shakira worked her flowing red skirt and swiveled her hips as she melded her yodely vocals with the high, lonesome sound of Flatts’ Gary LeVox. Next week’s mentor will be Harry Connick Jr., who will lead the finalists through the songbook of Frank Sinatra. What did you think of tonight’s elimination? Did Siobhan deserve to go home? Chick Claims Affair with Engaged Jake Pavelka, Says ABC "Instructed" Vienna Girardi Proposal

Radar Online may have topped itself with this one. Citing an ex-girlfriend with no name, and offering no details of any actual sex, that site says Jake Pavelka cheated on Vienna Girardi with some random ex. His alleged ex-girlfriend says The Bachelor star “made contact” with her after taping the show. Scandalous! He also said that Vienna meant nothing to him. Supposedly. The woman has not been publicly identified, possibly because she does not exist. But whoever it is gave a garbled interview on some Florida radio station. In the interview, the woman says that Jake was forced to propose to Vienna Girardi . From what we know of The Bachelor, that part might really be true! For a guy who’s supposedly cheating on Vienna and in love with some nameless other woman, Jake sure looked happy yesterday in his sit-down with Ellen DeGeneres . “When you get down on one knee and propose marriage to someone I take that very seriously,” she says through distorted audio. “The fact that he did that exclusively because he was instructed to do that, it disappoints me so much.” Instructed. You knowz it. That’s how Chris Harrison rolls. The supposed Jake Pavelka ex reveals that they had made plans together for the future and even had a possible marriage discussion. She feels she was lied to. “His actions are a complete 180 of that person he claims to be,” she says. “I feel like I’m forced to say something for the sole purpose of defending my honor.” Mmm hmm. This is even more absurd than the story yesterday claiming Vienna is an evil mastermind who manipulated Ali and conned Jake into proposing. Jake started calling her after he finished taping The Bachelor, she says, and those phone calls led to an in person meeting and “he told her he loved her.” Whether this is true or complete BS, the question remains: Will Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi last, and actually walk down the aisle?

Crystal Bowersox Rocks, and Other American Idol Women Sing Well

She went from the hospital bed to the American Idol stage to the leader of the season nine pack in just 24 hours. Indeed, we aren’t the first website to shower Crystal Bowersox with praise – and we definitely won’t be the last – but it’s well-deserved. On a night of live performances that overshadowed the guys’ lackluster efforts the evening before, Bowersox recovered from a dangerous illness and led the way. We run down the top 10 below… Crystal Bowersox : She gets points for showing up and for not playing the sympathy card. But especially for her unique rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long As I Can See the Light.” Lilly Scott : A close second. Challenged herself with the Sam Cooke classic “A Change is Gonna Come” and was even better than last week. Love her confidence in just who she is. Michelle Delamor : Note to Todrick Hall: this is how you re-arrange a song! Michelle comes across as a professional singer and turned a Creed rock single into a ballad. Siobhan Magnus : The anti-Aretha Franklin sung Franklin’s “Think” and showcased her versatility. The place went nuts when she hit her high notes. Katelyn Epperly : Ellen was off base with this critique. The song was supposed to be slow, and the use of the piano proved that Katelyn has multiple sides to her. Katie Stevens : She has a great voice and a great personality. The judges have to get over the fact that she’s 17 and just let her sing. Paige Miles : It’s always daring to take a song by an American Idol winner, but Miles did Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” sort of proud. Definitely needed more of an edge to it. Didi Benami : We felt terrible for when the tears welled up during the judges’ criticism. But “Lean On Me?” Really? It’s impossible to make that song your own at this point. Lacey Brown: Simply not up to par, vocals-wise, with the other contestants. Haeley Vaughn: We’re all for being happy, but her constant smiling freaks us out. She’s like a doll of some kind.mi It’s a clear choice, in our view: Lacey and Haeley should go home tonight. What do you think?
