Desert Winter

Just a quick update on some things. I have some upcoming projects that have come up and as it turns out, I will not be in DC next week. I’m sure everyone will get their fill of network coverage for the inaugural festivities. I’ll admit, that I had more than my share of the cold weather in NYC last week. It’s nice to be back in sunny, 70+ degree weather in Arizona! Song of the Day: “Good Lord Willing” by Little Big Town

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Joins Los Angeles City’s Boycott on Arizona

L.A. County supervisors join city's AZ boycott Tuesday, June 01, 2010 DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted to join the city's economic boycott of Arizona over the new immigration law. The L.A. City Council already voted to boycott the state because of Arizona's new immigration law. Supervisors Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky say there is no question that America's immigration system is broken, but they believe Arizona's new law is a violation of American civil rights. Molina and Yaroslavsky introduced a motion asking Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona to repeal SB 1070. The motion also directs the county to review all investments in Arizona, such as state municipal bonds, and to suspend travel to Arizona for county business. The motion passed by a vote of 3 to 2. The Board of Supervisors willl also send a letter to President Barack Obama and Congress, asking them to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Supervisor Don Knabe said boycotting Arizona is a misguided reaction to a bad law, while Supervisor Mike Antonovich called the motion “stupid.” “It doesn't make sense, it doesn't follow the law,” Antonovich said. “All Arizona is doing is following federal law and that is also California state law.” Supervisor Knabe released a written statement saying he also wouldn't support the motion. “Los Angeles County is currently facing tremendous fiscal challenges with our own dysfunctional state government, which we are attempting to work through. This motion takes away from these efforts, and will distract from what we are elected to do for the residents of this county,” Knabe's statement read. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was the deciding vote on the issue. The LAUSD Board of Education is also joining the list of those opposing Arizona's law. The board will consider on Tuesday a resolution condemning the law and curtailing economic support of Arizona, introduced by board president Monica Garcia. The resolution would urge students and their parents to be aware of the law, which authorizes Arizona police to question someone's immigration status when there is suspicion that the person may be in the state illegally. added by: EthicalVegan

Is Dora the Explorer an illegal immigrant?

In her police mug shot, the doe-eyed cartoon heroine with the bowl haircut has a black eye, battered lip and bloody nose. Dora the Explorer's alleged crime? “Illegal Border Crossing Resisting Arrest.” The doctored picture, one of several circulating widely in the aftermath of Arizona's controversial new immigration law, may seem harmless, ridiculous or even tasteless. But experts say the pictures and the rhetoric surrounding them online, in newspapers and at public rallies, reveal some Americans' attitudes about race, immigrants and where some of immigration reform debate may be headed. “Dora is kind of like a blank screen onto which people can project their thoughts and feelings about Latinos,” said Erynn Masi de Casanova, a sociology professor at the University of Cincinnati. “They feel like they can say negative things because she's only a cartoon character.” The depictions, whether through irony or protest, are being used by those who oppose and support Arizona's law. On one hand she's a likable symbol who many can relate to, and at the same time, perceived as an outsider who doesn't belong anywhere. It's not the first time a children's character has been dragged into a serious debate. In the late 1990s, Tinky Winky the Teletubby, a purple children's TV character with a triangle antenna – was called out by Christian leaders for being gay. Sesame Street roommates Bert and Ernie are often involved in statements on same-sex marriage. Both shows' producers say the characters aren't gay. In Dora's case, especially because her image is so widely available, she's an easy target as discussion ramps up on how lawmakers should address the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. For about a decade, the pint-sized Latina character has taught millions of children the English alphabet, colors and Spanish phrases on a Nickelodeon TV show and through a global empire. Her smiling cherub face is plastered on everything from backpacks to T-shirts to fruit snacks. But since the passage of the Arizona law – which requires authorities to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally – Dora's life and immigration status have been scrutinized and mocked. added by: danteglam

Arizona Official Threatens to Cut Off Los Angeles Power as Payback for Boycott

If Los Angeles wants to boycott Arizona, it had better get used to reading by candlelight. That's the message from a member of Arizona's top government utilities agency, who threw down the gauntlet Tuesday in a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa by threatening to cut off the city's power supply as retribution. Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote the letter in response to the Los Angeles City Council's decision last week to boycott the Grand Canyon State — in protest of its immigration law — by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses. Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider. “Doggone it — if you're going to boycott this candy store … then don't come in for any of it,” Pierce told FoxNews.com. In the letter, he ridiculed Villaraigosa for saying that the point of the boycott was to “send a message” by severing the “resources and ties” they share. “I received your message; please receive mine. As a statewide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona's electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the 'resources and ties' we share with the city of Los Angeles,” Pierce wrote. “If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation.” Appearing to tap into local frustration in Arizona over the raft of boycotts and threatened boycotts from cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Pierce warned that Arizona companies are willing and ready to fight boycott with boycott. “I am confident that Arizona's utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands,” Pierce wrote. “If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona's economy.” Pierce told FoxNews.com that he was speaking for himself, not the entire commission, though he has the support of at least one other member. But Arizona has some serious leverage over Los Angeles, as well as the rest of California. The state and city get electricity from a nuclear power plant outside Phoenix, as well as from coal-fired power plants in northern Arizona and two giant hydroelectric power generators along the Colorado River. Despite that, the Los Angeles City Council voted overwhelmingly last week to ban future business with Arizona — a decision that could cost Arizona millions of dollars in lost contracts. Los Angeles officials were furious with the Arizona immigration law passed last month and joined local officials in cities across the country in pushing boycotts to register their dismay. Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling and civil rights abuses. Arizona officials have defended the law, saying the state needed to take its illegal immigration problem into its own hands. Pierce said he's “supportive” of the state's efforts to control the border. The law requires local law enforcement to try to verify the immigration status of anyone they have contact with whom they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. It empowers them to turn over verified illegal immigrants to federal custody. The legislation explicitly prohibits screening people based solely on race or national origin. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/19/arizona-official-threatens-cut-los-an… added by: IndustryRule
