Patrick Stump Calls Reaction To A Cappella Grammy Video A ‘Happy Surprise’

Clip of Stump singing five songs nominated for Record of the Year has become a sensation. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump performs on YouTube Photo: Patrick Stump/ YouTube Earlier this week, Patrick Stump continued his slow march toward social-media proficiency (he even writes his own tweets now!) when he released a brand-new video of himself doing a cappella versions of the five songs nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. In the days since its premiere, the clip has become a sensation, something that has as much to do with his genuinely great vocal chops (and oddly mesmerizing bow tie) as it does with the fact that it’s not exactly clear why he decided to make the video in the first place. So we asked him. And as it turns out, Stump — who’s gearing up for the release of his solo debut, Soul Punk — never intended for the video to be made public, until he received some advice to the contrary. “I guess I decided to do the a cappella thing ’cause I’ve been put down as a musician a few times as ‘just a singer,’ and I wanted to kind of see how much [of] a musician I could be with just my voice,” Stump wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “Choosing to sing the Grammy nominees started because ‘Nothin’ on You’ was in my head for a week, then ‘Empire State of Mind,’ and I’d seen they were both nominated. The whole thing just kind of came together naturally. I recorded it right around the time they were announced, I showed it to some friends and they were like, ‘Post this!’ ” So he did. Stump said that he’s been blown away by the reaction his a cappella clip has received, though that doesn’t mean he’s not above nitpicking. Not about the music, mind you: No, most of his criticisms have to do with his wardrobe decisions. “It’s just been one of those happy little unplanned pleasant surprises,” he wrote. “I should’ve worn a different shirt with that bow tie, though.” Related Artists Patrick Stump

Lady Gaga ’60 Minutes’ Interview Details Revealed

‘She’s obviously a fascinating person,’ Anderson Cooper says about time he spent with the pop star. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images For those wondering when that “60 Minutes” interview with Lady Gaga and Anderson Cooper will air, the news anchor announced that it will air in February 2011, around the time of the Grammy Awards. He also revealed why he wanted to interview the “Bad Romance” singer so badly. “I was really interested to meet Lady Gaga … she’s obviously a fascinating person,” he said in a sit-down with “The Insider.” “What’s great about ’60 Minutes’ is you spend a lot of time with the person you’re profiling.” Cooper recounted just how much time he got to spend with the singer, who is going to release her new album in early 2011. “So to be able to spend a couple weekends with her in various places over the course of several months, it’s really cool,” he added. “And it’s really interesting and I’m learning stuff about her I never saw before.” Photos and some grainy YouTube footage of the two filming the interview in October found its way online soon after they were spotted in London on the South Bank of the Thames River chatting for the episode. Gaga was wearing a lacy bustier, platform ankle-high boots, fishnet stockings and sunglasses, with her long hair loose and down. Gaga recently tweeted that her album Born This Way is nearly complete, and Akon, her label boss, shared that he thinks Gaga is really stepping up her game with this album. “If I was going to compare it to her previous work, I would definitely say it’s a notch up,” Akon said. “It’s like she’s slowly taking you on to this journey down this road. If she were to just drastically do it, she probably would have lost everybody from the first album, but once the sound was created and established, now we can use that as a tool to grab all the monsters and walk them down this graveyard. It’s crazy. It’s amazing.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Fox Head Predicts Low Ratings for Conan

Why did Fox executives pass on their chance to scoop up Conan O’B rien? According to Fox head Kevin Relly, O’B rien’s TBS debut will probably earn ratings with a “decimal on the left side of the number,” and on Fox, “there would have been an enormous amount of pressure to see the decimal on the right side.” Around the time that NBC started O’B rien’s booting process, he was drawing less than a 2.0 rating in the key demo, but as THR notes, even a cable hit like The Daily Show can only manage a .8. Can Conan do better? [ THR ]

‘Knight And Day’ Director Hoped To Bring Out Tom Cruise’s ‘Lightness’

‘This was a really great opportunity for him to shine,’ James Mangold says of his leading man. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise in “Knight and Day” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises Superheroes, all-encompassing CGI, in-your-face 3-D effects — these are the predominant trends in this year’s summer-movie season. What a surprise, then, to find “Knight and Day,” an action flick not based on an existing entertainment property, one not shot within the confines of a green screen and one featuring an actor who’s a member of that increasingly rare breed: the traditional Hollywood movie star. The movie, in fact, has as much in common with old-school pictures like “North by Northwest” and “Charade,” and for two hours, its stars (Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz) are more reminiscent of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn than other contemporary film stars. Director James Mangold recognizes the throwback factor to “Knight and Day” — and, as the guy behind heady fare like “Cop Land” and “3:10 to Yuma,” he welcomes it — but that’s not what pulled him into the production. Rather, it was the chance to work with Cruise and Diaz. “When I first read it, I thought it was a really promising idea for a movie, very charming idea for a movie,” Mangold told MTV News. “But what really intrigued me was that Cameron was attached — she’s someone who I adore and have known for a long time — and Tom was curious about it.’ Mangold had met with Cruise around the time he was developing “Yuma,” but both men agreed the actor wasn’t right for the film. When they did end up working together, they wanted it be on something that wasn’t so damn serious. “There was a lightness to him and a charm to him,” Mangold said of Cruise. “I hoped he’d make a choice to make a picture that exploited that even more. This was a really great opportunity, I think, for him to shine, still being the leading man and still being capable but getting that other side of him out.” That’s exactly what he does in “Knight and Day,” ditching the solemnity of his characters in films like “Valkyrie” and “Collateral” and returning to the type of manic comic territory he explored in “Jerry Maguire” and “Risky Business.” Once Cruise signed up, the script began to change. The story went from a comedy vehicle to something that merged high-octane action with comedic jabs. And the film continued to morph even as filming was under way. “There were days we’d show up and we’d completely rewrite what we were doing while we were going it,” Mangold said. “There’s a lot of jazz to Tom.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Knight and Day.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Gary Coleman: It Was ‘True Love’ with Ex-Wife

Though Gary Coleman and his then-wife split around the time this video was shot, he couldn’t stop gushing over her — and said they had “true” and “unconditional” love. In this clip from a never-aired 2008 reality show pilot , Coleman says his goal is… Read more

Shannon Price is a Money-Grubbing Leech – Just Ask Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman’s ex-wife Shannon Price was motivated by money alone. The former child star himself said as much to the girl’s face – and on video. In 2008, around the time Gary and Shannon were divorcing, the two were filming a TV show pilot. It’s unclear what show, but it wasn’t picked up. Clips have been unearthed, however, and show Gary unloading on Shannon Price in front of a life coach. “All you care about is the money,” he says. He goes on to bitterly complain he’s been forced to take jobs he hated to support her … going to places he loathed, including Madison, Wisconsin. Why the hatred of that city, we have no idea. But the coach tells Gary he needs a job, STAT, and even offered to hook him up at a car dealership. Gary Coleman had Shannon Price pegged. Fast forward to 2010. Coleman died in May, and Price’s behavior has been nothing short of deplorable as she makes move after move to cash in. As if hawking the Gary Coleman death photo weren’t bad enough, Price filed legal documents angling for control of whatever assets he has left. Shannon wants to be named special administrator of Gary’s estate on grounds she was his common-law wife, having lived with him for five years. Additionally, she has submitted to the court a handwritten document purportedly from Gary making her the sole beneficiary of his entire estate. In what she claims is a handwritten addendum written by Gary Coleman in 2007, Shannon says he named her “sole heir of any and all monies.” That and all “earnings, model trains, vehicles, cars, toys, electronics, homes, other inheritances if any, all things physical and/or intellectual.” The couple then got divorced in 2008, but no matter. Oddly, the handwritten document reads: “This I have done because of my personal selfishness and weakness and I Love her with all my heart.” The handwritten addendum modifies a 2006 will stating “I revoke all previous wills. I specifically disinherit my biological parents and siblings.”
