Katy Perry skintight ballot picture

Like Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry has been out on the campaign trail, performing free concerts at President Barack Obama#39;s re-election rallies. Unlike Springsteen, Perry has been wearing a pair of skintight rubber minidresses—one emblazoned with Obama#39;s “Forward” campaign slogan, the other with her “ballot”—on the stump. The 28-year-old pop singer performed at a rally in Milwaukee on Saturday, peeling off a red-white-and-blue dress to reveal the latex “Forward” frock. Last month, Perr

Patrick Stump’s ‘Spotlight’ Video: The Kids Are All Right

In his first solo video, Stump gets positive, grabs the spotlight for himself. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump in his music video for “Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)” Photo: Island Last week, Patrick Stump told MTV News that his brand-new Truant Wave EP wasn’t ” Take This to Your Grave, Part II, ” and if the 23rd-century pop&B sonics of the thing weren’t enough to convince you of that fact, well, then perhaps his “Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)” video will. Because the clip — which premiered Monday (February 28) on PopDust — is most certainly a departure from everything he did in his former (they’re still on hiatus , right?) band Fall Out Boy. That’s mostly because, unlike basically every late-period FOB vid, it’s not cluttered with questionable plot devices, winking in-jokes and cloying promotional shots. Instead, it’s a sunny, simple, homemade thing — a straightforward, decidedly uplifting bit of DIY inspiration. In short, it may very well be the best video Stump’s ever been associated with. Shot in dreamlike slo-mo, the video showcases a host of kids excelling at various feats — skateboarding, extreme pogo-sticking, urban gymnastics, sticking their tongue out really far — and, in the process, becoming the kings and queens of their own little kingdoms. That message gibes with the hook of the song (basically that you can “be your own spotlight,” no matter how inconsequential your talents) and, when coupled with the youthful exuberance of the video’s stars, the end result is a truly captivating, unapologetically positive experience. And it bears mention that, throughout the video, Stump appears to be experiencing the same posi-vibes as the kids he’s surrounded by. Whether he’s trying (and failing miserably) to match the cup-stacking talents of one of his co-stars or simply drifting through a skate park belting out the song’s hook, he seems — for the first time in a long time — to be completely unencumbered, free of whatever burden you’ve probably assigned to him and content to just do his own thing. He cracks up. He smiles. He’s doing this his own way. And in that regard, the “Spotlight” video is also a success, because it shows Stump following his own advice. By stepping out as a solo artist, he’s grabbing his own spotlight, becoming the ruler of his very own kingdom. This is the video he’d longed to make — free and clear and straight from the heart. It’s not Take This to Your Grave, Part II because it wasn’t supposed to be. As a video, it’s something much better. What do you think of Patrick Stump’s first solo video? Let us know in the comments! Patrick Stump Says Truant Wave EP Isn’t Take This To Your Grave, Part II

Erstwhile Fall Out Boy frontman’s solo EP made iTunes debut Tuesday. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage Late last year, when Patrick Stump told MTV News that his solo debut, Soul Punk, was tentatively due in February, there was much rejoicing from long-suffering Fall Out Boy fans, all of whom were clamoring for any bit of news surrounding their favorite group. Of course, that rejoicing was tempered some when it was subsequently announced that Stump had pushed back Soul Punk in favor of a six-song EP called Truant Wave. And on Tuesday, with little lead-up and absolutely zero promotion, that EP premiered on iTunes. It not only provided FOB fans a preview of where Stump is headed, musically, but also served as a point of division among their ranks. Some loved the electronic-leaning, R&B-teasing jams, while others, well, they were probably hoping Stump would return to his pop-punk roots. When he spoke to MTV News on Thursday, Stump addressed both sides of the issue, because, quite frankly, he understands why some would be upset by his new direction. In fact, that’s part of the reason he put out Truant Wave in the first place: to soften the blow. “I really want Soul Punk to have as much of a chance to have it be listened to discerningly,” he laughed. “And if I’m going to disappoint people by not [making] Take This to Your Grave, Part II, I would rather do that before Soul Punk, because that record means something to me.” Of course, there were other reasons for rushing the EP out, most of which he learned the hard way during Fall Out Boy’s final days. “Remember when Fall Out boy was putting out Folie

‘Breaking Dawn’ Star Angela Sarafyan Gushes Over Castmates, Director

Actress, who plays Tia, gives MTV News a ‘Breaking Dawn’ update straight from the set. By Jocelyn Vena Angela Sarafyan Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images Angela Sarafyan came onto the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” set last November and was warmly welcomed by the director as well as her castmates. When MTV News recently spoke to Sarafyan, who plays vampire Tia of the Egyptian coven, she gushed about her experience on the movie set. “I went on-set and met Bill Condon and he is truly such a great, great person,” she said. “I’m honestly humbled by the fact that he is kind and generous and, with the enormity of this film, has been so graceful about giving every actor their time. He immediately put me on a great starting point. We were all in this incredible Egyptian casbah in Baton Rouge [back in November] and it was quite magnificent. It was quite easy. It’s not as pressure-filled as you’d think. It felt like an independent project where everyone’s having a nice time, no one’s pressured. It’s been that way almost every day that we’ve worked on this.” Three movies into the franchise already, the crew is currently in the midst of filming the final two films, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two, and the “Twilight” newbie says that things are so relaxed on the set that she doesn’t feel like a rookie castmate. “I was telling my mom, and I say these kids, they’re [probably] people who are not very nice and they’re stuck up … and they’re the complete opposite. They’re very kind and sweet and normal and awesome,” she explained. “I don’t think I could find anything bad to say about a single person on the set. They’re quite humble and normal people. It was a delight to come into that. “About being the new kid on the set, there’s so many of us, we’ve all become a family ultimately,” she added. “It’s been quite easy.” Sarafyan even got to help create a bit of backstory in order to play Tia. “I always envisioned Tia like Cleopatra and Benjamin like Marc Anthony, so even though they’re the younger vampires, they’re very strong-willed and rebels. We have this entire history of how they were 4 and they met and they fell in love and at 16 they turned into vampires,” she explained. “It’s something along those lines. And it’s funny, I spoke to Stephenie Meyer and she has a similar idea of what we created.” Now Sarafyan and the rest of the cast are “actually in the middle of it all. We’re midway through and we’re not necessarily shooting as the script goes.” And as Robert Pattinson recently revealed, the big fight scene is currently being shot. “We’re shooting it on green screen, so it’s really quite unpredictable because we don’t know what we’re going to be doing day to day. Every character is pretty much in it except Ashley Greene’s character and Jackson [Rathbone’s] character. Were spending 14 hours a day hanging out with each other and it’s been really exciting because at the end of the day, we don’t know what it’s going to look like,” Sarafyan said. “It’s almost half the script, so it’s taking a while to shoot it.” Sarafyan’s next film is “A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy,” in which she co-stars with “Saturday Night Live” players Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis. Patrick Stump Calls Reaction To A Cappella Grammy Video A ‘Happy Surprise’

Clip of Stump singing five songs nominated for Record of the Year has become a sensation. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump performs on YouTube Photo: Patrick Stump/ YouTube Earlier this week, Patrick Stump continued his slow march toward social-media proficiency (he even writes his own tweets now!) when he released a brand-new video of himself doing a cappella versions of the five songs nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. In the days since its premiere, the clip has become a sensation, something that has as much to do with his genuinely great vocal chops (and oddly mesmerizing bow tie) as it does with the fact that it’s not exactly clear why he decided to make the video in the first place. So we asked him. And as it turns out, Stump — who’s gearing up for the release of his solo debut, Soul Punk — never intended for the video to be made public, until he received some advice to the contrary. “I guess I decided to do the a cappella thing ’cause I’ve been put down as a musician a few times as ‘just a singer,’ and I wanted to kind of see how much [of] a musician I could be with just my voice,” Stump wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “Choosing to sing the Grammy nominees started because ‘Nothin’ on You’ was in my head for a week, then ‘Empire State of Mind,’ and I’d seen they were both nominated. The whole thing just kind of came together naturally. I recorded it right around the time they were announced, I showed it to some friends and they were like, ‘Post this!’ ” So he did. Stump said that he’s been blown away by the reaction his a cappella clip has received, though that doesn’t mean he’s not above nitpicking. Not about the music, mind you: No, most of his criticisms have to do with his wardrobe decisions. “It’s just been one of those happy little unplanned pleasant surprises,” he wrote. “I should’ve worn a different shirt with that bow tie, though.” Related Artists Patrick Stump

Patrick Stump Declares: ‘I’m Not In Fall Out Boy Right Now’

‘Whether we play again or not, I don’t know,’ singer tells Spin.com. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Well, that didn’t take long. Hours after Pete Wentz took to his Twitter account to say he “can’t imagine playing in Fall Out Boy again,” his (former?) bandmate Patrick Stump responded with a doozy of his own, telling Spin.com , “I’m not in Fall Out Boy right now.” “One way or another, the band will always be around,” Stump said.
