Nun Faces 20 Years For Symbolic Break-In According to Raw Story An 83-year-old nun who broke into a Tennessee depleted uranium storage facility in 2012 and splashed human blood on several surfaces, exposing a massive security hole at the nation’s only facility used to store radioactive conventional munitions, was convicted Wednesday and faces a term of up to 20 years in prison. The only regret Sister Megan Rice shared with members of her jury on Wednesday was that she wished 70 years hadn’t passed before she took direct action, according to the BBC. She and two other peace activists, 64-year-old Michael Walli and 56-year-old Greg Boertje-Obed, were convicted of “invasion of a nuclear facility” in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, even though investigators admitted they did not get close to any actual nuclear material. The three activists are part of a group called “Transform Now Plowshares,” a reference to the book of Isaiah, which says, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares. They shall learn war no more.” All three face individual sentences of up to 20 years, along with a litany of fines. As they invaded the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, a perimeter fence was cut, several surfaces were spray-painted, banners were hung and activists read from the Bible. They also spread human blood on several surfaces, saying its use was symbolic, meant to remind people “of the horrific spilling of blood by nuclear weapons.” “The shortcomings in security at one of the most dangerous places on the planet have embarrassed a lot of people,” the activists’ attorney, Francis Lloyd, told members of the jury according to the BBC. “You’re looking at three scapegoats behind me.” Sister Rice has been arrested between 40 or 50 times committing acts of civil disobedience, according to The New York Times, including once in Nevada after she physically blocked a truck at a nuclear test site. “I believe we are all equally responsible to stop a known crime,” Sister Rice said from the witness stand, according to quotes published by her group. Otis Nixon Arrested For Crack Possession According to TMZ Former MLB star Otis Nixon was arrested over the weekend in Atlanta after cops say they discovered a crack pipe and what appeared to be several crack rocks inside his car … and it seems he’s using the infamous “the crack belongs to my son” defense. According to an incident report from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, 54-year-old Nixon was pulled over just after midnight on Saturday after witnesses called police to report a Dodge Ram weaving all over the road. During the stop, Nixon — who played for the Braves, Indians and Expos — was searched … and cops say they found a pipe for smoking crack cocaine in Nixon’s pants pocket and an item believed to be a crack rock in the driver’s seat. But that’s not all … cops say they found ANOTHER pipe and more suspected crack rocks in the floor board of the driver’s side … along with even more drug paraphernalia. Now get this — according to the report, Nixon told the sheriff’s deputy that the substance they found in his car was indeed crack cocaine, but he said the pipes and drugs belonged to HIS SON and that he had been planning to get rid of the pipe. Police say they conducted field sobriety tests and determined Nixon was NOT under the influence of crack cocaine or alcohol. Nixon was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and possession of a drug-related object. Nixon — who played 17 seasons in the bigs and stole 620 career bases — is still in custody. Bail has been set at $11,880. We think this might be Nixon’s come to Jesus moment. When your caught by the police with crack in your car, you’ve hit rock bottom. AP

Another teen mom puts her baby in the garbage. Teen Dumps Baby In The Trash According to ABC 6 Lancaster police said they have arrested a McCaskey East High School student who gave birth in a school restroom and then left the baby in a trash can. Cherlie LaFleur, 19, was arraigned Wednesday night on a misdemeanor count of concealing the death of a child. She was then committed to Lancaster County Prison on $1 million bail. Police said LaFleur, of the 300 block of North Marshall Street, gave birth to the male infant in the restroom Tuesday and then tried to flush the baby down a toilet. When that didn’t work, police said LaFleur put the baby in the trash can, where the dead infant was discovered by a school custodian Tuesday night. Officials said an autopsy conducted Wednesday indicated that the infant had been carried for 27-29 weeks. They added that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and it has not yet been determined whether the baby was born alive or stillborn. The crime of concealing the death of a child can occur under either circumstance. Parents reacted with shock. “It’s just a shame,” high school parent Angnette Swinton said. “I’ve heard of my fair share of bad things but nothing like this,” junior varsity baseball coach Ervin Lopez said. The School District of Lancaster said Thursday that it has safe rooms established at both high schools. Staff members or students directly affected by the situation are encouraged to meet with counselors in these rooms, officials said.
