Camille A. Brown Is The First Black Woman Choreographer Nominated For A Tony Award In Over 20 Years

Link:

T his year’s Tony Awards could turn out to be a historic evening for Black women in the realm of dance. According to Forbes , choreographer and artistic director Camille A. Brown is the first Black woman to be nominated in the Best Choreography category in 23 years. #ICYMI this piece about @CamilleABrown #dance #choreographers https://t.co/AZnPkrZzVK — Dance/USA (@DanceUSAorg) June 7, 2019 Brown—who is the founder of the New York City-based Camille A. Brown & Dancers dance company—is nominated for her work on the play Choir Boy . The play, which was written by Tarell Alvin McCraney , chronicles the experiences of a Black student who leads a gospel choir. Brown intertwined the storyline with powerful forms of dance expression. She says the premise of the play prompted her to pull inspiration from South African dance traditions, Step dance routines, and Juba dance which was started by Africans who were enslaved. “When I was hearing the spirituals [in Choir Boy] I was thinking about the historical context of them because they’re over 200 years old, but then looking at the men [in the cast] and how they are walking in life in 2019,” she told Deadline in an interview. “I told them that this was a time for them to be unapologetic on stage, and to step into what all this means. I told them, you’re carrying this historical information but you’re also carrying who you are. It’s not just about me coming in and putting in steps – there has to be the need and intention, an urgency, this combination of working and moving our bodies in space and having a dialogue.” The award-winning choreographer has had a storied career in the dance industry. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and went on to dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Brown’s dance company has performed internationally and she has led the choreography for shows that include Once on This Island and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! . Brown says being nominated for the Tony Award is meaningful and speaks volumes about the need for more representation in dance and theatre. “When I wanted to do theatre, I didn’t see many reflections of myself. This Tony nomination is so important to me, and has deep meaning, because the last black woman that was nominated in this category was Marlies Yearby in 1996, for Rent ,” she said. “I have I hope that a young black girl who wants to choreograph for theater but doesn’t necessarily see many black females can see a reflection of herself through me.” The 73rd Tony Awards will air on June 9. Mo Meatless Money: Jay-Z Invests $1 Million Into A Black-Owned Vegan Cookie Company

Source: WENN.com / WENN Jay-Z’s Latest Investment Is A Vegan Cookie Company The news of Jay-Z  officially becoming a billionaire is still fresh in everyone’s mind, and just like always, the rap mogul is already on to the next one as he continues to expand his business portfolio. The rapper’s venture capital firm Marcy Venture Partners led a $1 million seed funding round with a company that specializes in making vegan cookies. The company, Partake Foods, is a Black-owned start-up that makes health-conscious food products and specializes in producing food items that are free of the United State’s top eight allergens. According to reports, other notable investors in Partake Foods’ first major round of funding include The Factory, Backstage Capital, SoFi Venture, and Chuck Muth. This latest investment is not the first time Shawn Carter has backed a plant-based company. The Brooklyn native recently invested in Impossible Foods’ fifth equity funding round along with a slew of other celebrities. The company, known for its meatless hamburger patty, raised a total of $300 million. Jay isn’t new to this whole vegan thing, either. Along with his wife, Beyoncé, Hov co-owns 22 Days Nutrition, a company designed to encourage others to commit to a 22-day vegan challenge. The couple, who primarily eats mostly plant-based, have been vocal enthusiasts of the vegan lifestyle, with Bey publicly adapting a strict plant-based diet to prepare for her iconic Coachella performance in 2018. As for Partake Foods, the company was founded back in 2016 by former Coca-Cola national sales director, Denise Woodard. The decision to start her own company was directly inspired by her daughter developing a severe allergy to several foods. “I couldn’t figure out how to make a gluten-free, corn-free, egg-free cookie, so I went to buy one, but couldn’t find any,” Woodard said to People at the time. The cookies that they make are completely vegan and are free of peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, soy, gluten, fish and shellfish, as well as are non-GMO, free of artificial flavors, and free of preservatives. Partake Foods can be found in over 300 stores and are expected to more than triple that number by the end of the year.

Here is the original post:

H ip hop mogul Jay-Z doesn’t only preach about the importance of entrepreneurship and ownership in the Black community; it’s something that he practices. The Brooklyn-bred rapper is investing in the futures of African American entrepreneurs. According to Black Enterprise , he recently invested $1 million in a Black-owned vegan cookie company. . @PartakeFoods is a black-owned company that makes health-conscious food products. https://t.co/qIPOmlFtmN — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) June 5, 2019 The brand—dubbed Partake Foods—was created by Denise Woodard . She founded the company after she struggled to find healthy snacks for her daughter who had several food allergies. Woodard realized that there was a larger need for more health-conscious food options and decided to move forward with launching her business. She funded her company through a Kickstarter campaign and as it grew, she left her corporate job at Coca-Cola to put all of her time into Partake Foods. Woodard started out selling cookies from her car and later received investments from venture capital firms that included Arlan Hamilton ’s Backstage Capital, The Factory, SoFi Venture, and Chuck Muth who is on the leadership team at Beyond Meat; a company that provides plant-based food options. Jay-Z’s investment was made through his venture capital firm Marcy Venture Capital Partners. “We are so excited to collaborate with the MVP and Factory teams, as they both bring a wealth of knowledge in brand building and scaling consumer companies,” Woodard said in a statement. Her products can be found in over 300 stores including Wegmans and Whole Foods. The leadership team at MVP is excited to invest in Partake Foods. “Partake has the ingredients to build a mass market brand: compelling values, a great tasting product, and a tenacious and experienced operator,” said MVP co-founder Larry Marcus . News about Jay-Z’s investment comes shortly after it was announced that he was named hip hop’s first billionaire by Forbes. SEE ALSO: ‘Forgot About Dre’: Is Jay-Z Really Rap’s First Billionaire? You Played Yourself: DJ Khaled Is Getting ‘Father Of Asahd’ FLAMED For Throwing Tantrum Over Album Sales

Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Fans Call DJ Khaled “FAKE” After Tantrum Reports Whew chile! Dj Khaled is catching heat after a report exposed how allegedly nasty and rude he was towards his label over his flopping album streams. A source says Khaled stormed in Epic records and with his entourage and was “angry” and “yelling” after finding that his recent album failed to debut at the top of the charts. Reportedly he went on an EPIC rant that turned folks off who work for him. Page Six reports:  ‘He threw a temper tantrum,” blaming the also-ran album placing on his label chiefs’ not understanding streaming services and bundle deals. A second source, who also described how the disappointed DJ did not hold back his displeasure, added, “No. 2 won’t do for Khaled. He was not happy when the album didn’t debut at No. 1 . . . Not happy at all.” An industry insider added: “He was furious. There was some nasty stuff said. Publicly, he’s all about ‘positivity,’ but there is a mean side to him that people don’t see . . . He overhyped the record and blew it up as his biggest album ever.” YIKES! Khaled also posted and deleted a video where he seemingly berated Tyler The Creator’s number 1 album as “mysterious music.” This isn’t the Dj Khaled that folks are are used to online, who likes to preach positivity and folks are calling him out for his salty behavior. so much of @djkhaled 's brand is positivity and wanting/seeing success for others. it's always been about there being room out here for everyone to win until he isn't the one winning…then all the inspirational shit goes out the window. #WeThePressed — Jamal (@JamalJimoh) June 7, 2019 Hit the flip to see how folks are responding to DJ Khaled being seemingly salty over being second best. They’re dragging him!

I Am Mother: Hilary Swank & Clara Rugaard Talk Perfect Humans, Childhood Lies & More

Continued here:

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Hilary Swank on the big (or small) screen, but the Academy Award winner is back, and has taken her talents to Netflix. ‘I Am Mother’ is an intense thriller science fiction flick starring Ms. Swank, Clara Rugaard and Rose Byrne — who voices the character of Robot Mother. The movie tells the story of female robot in a bunker raising a teenager while giving the impression that the world above is not fit for human life. When a gunshot-wounded woman (played by Swank) arrives at the bunker door, she threatens that idea, calling into question everything the girl was told about the outside world. The girl then start to explore the robot’s nature and discovers the truth of Mother’s greater mission. We caught up with Hilary and Clara as they dished on all things digital, dark and deceptive. When asked about one thing they were taught as children that turned out to be a lie, Clara joked: “Well, the toothfairy! Santa Clause?”  Hilary gave a more in depth response, adding: “I think both of our families are very liberal and open-minded, so they didn’t tell us…” Clara: “…Lies to make us unravel ourselves. But I think parents do things to protect their children.” Hilary: “I think both our parents are like ‘We’re all one people’, ‘Treat people how you want to be treated. That sort of thing” Have you checked out ‘I Am Mother’ yet? Catch the full movie on Netflix, and check out what else the cast of the film had to say in the video above.
