Drake To Host 2011 Juno Awards

Toronto MC will return to his hometown to helm the Canadian music awards show. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Chances are good that if you check out an awards show in 2011, it will be hard to escape Drake. The Young Money MC already has four nominations for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards under his belt, and the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences just announced he’ll be hosting the 2011 Juno Awards. “I am beyond honored to be hosting this monumental Juno Awards in the greatest city on Earth,” Drizzy said in a statement. “I want to bring a youthful energy to the show and encourage people to be excited about what Canadian music has to offer. See you all at the show.” “Drake has made incredible strides on the national and international music scene in the past year and exemplifies the next generation of Canadian artists. We’re thrilled to have him host the 2011 Juno Awards in his hometown of Toronto,” added Melanie Berry, president and CEO of CARAS and the Juno Awards. “People are still buzzing over his performance last year on the Juno Awards, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store this time around!” The Toronto native is no stranger to the Junos, having scored four nominations and two trophies. The Thank Me Later lyricist also hit the stage alongside fellow Canadian pop export Justin Bieber at last year’s awards. However, Drizzy won’t know if he’ll have to pull double duty as both a host and award contender until February 1, when the 2011 nominations are announced. The show, which will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the awards, will air live on CTV on Sunday, March 27. News of the hosting gig comes around the same time as the announcement of Drizzy’s four Grammy nods. The singer/MC is up for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album for Thank Me Later, Best Rap Solo Performance for “Over” and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Fancy” with T.I. and Swizz Beatz. Grammy Nominations Concert: Katy Perry And Justin Bieber Perform, Earn Nods

B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Train also hit the stage for the nominations special. By James Montgomery Katy Perry performs during the GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Even though the Grammy Awards are still more than two months away, Eminem should probably start getting his acceptance speech ready. Or, more specifically, acceptance speeches. Em landed three huge nominations during Wednesday night’s (December 1) Grammy Nominations Concert at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — Record and Song of the Year for his massive hit “Love the Way You Lie” and an Album of the Year nod for the equally big Recovery — making him the early favorite to take home the hardware February 13, when the Grammys will be handed out. Another early favorite is Cee Lo, whose “F— You” scored noms for both Record and Song of the Year and — of course — country juggernauts Lady Antebellum, who matched Eminem with nominations for Record, Song and Album of the Year. Both Eminem and Lady Antebellum were expected by most to pick up nominations in the so-called “big four” categories, but that doesn’t mean the Grammy nominations special was without its fair share of surprises. Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream picked up a nod for Best Album, along with Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster and, in the night’s most unexpected twist, indie stalwarts the Arcade Fire and their disc The Suburbs. All of those categories figure to be close, but the Grammy for Best New Artist appears to be a race between two Canadian heartthrobs: Justin Bieber and Drake, who are the presumptive favorites in a field that also includes Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding. Bieber — who appeared live via satellite from London — couldn’t contain his excitement (or find the right words, for that matter) after learning he’d been nominated, telling the night’s host, LL Cool J, that “It feels amazing … I can’t believe I’m in this position! I don’t know what to say!” Of course, the nominations were just half of the show. In true Grammy tradition, the telecast also featured a host of high-profile performances. Perry kicked things off with a holiday-themed take on “California Gurls” (meaning she wore some ornaments in her hair) and was followed by Bruno Mars, who strummed his way through “Just the Way You Are,” backed by a trilling string section and a pianist. Train performed their massive “Hey, Soul Sister” — which, rather shockingly, was shut out of the Big Four — Bieber reappeared for an acoustic version of “My Favorite Girl,” and Mars teamed up with B.o.B to put a lilting spin on “Nothin’ on You,” which picked up a nomination for Record of the Year. The 2011 Grammy Nominees Revealed … Possibly

Eminem, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and more Grammy guesses, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Wednesday night (December 1), CBS will broadcast one of my favorite events of the year: the annual Grammy Nominations telecast/concert/thingy. Not only is it the unofficial kickoff of the self-congratulatory season, but it gives me a chance to wager on another largely arbitrary and oft insane awards show. So, you know, I’m pumped. After all, it’s not exactly news to readers of Bigger Than the Sound that I fancy myself quite the prognosticator, particularly when it comes to shows like the Grammys (or the VMAs ). This is partially because I consider myself an expert on these kinds of things, but also because I have a huge gambling problem. Sometimes, I even manage to hit the nail on the head, like I did with my predictions for last year’s Grammys (who among us can forget my triumphant 4-for-5 performance in Record of the Year?!?), though, more often than not, I fail miserably. Still, I keep trying. It seems I cannot turn down the opportunity to pick the nominees at crazy awards shows, and the 2011 Grammys (which will air Sunday, February 13) are perhaps the craziest in recent memory. After all, back in April, the Recording Academy — the folks behind the Grammys — decided to randomly extend the eligibility period to 13 months (from September 1, 2009, to September 30, 2010), which meant a whole lot of albums that I practically forgot about (Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, Muse’s The Resistance, John Mayer’s Battle Studies ) were all of a sudden back in play. All of that is a rather longwinded way of saying that these picks are nothing more than informed guesses, really — though, in keeping with the general WTF-ery of the Grammys, I suppose that makes them strangely perfect. In an attempt to save myself from total humiliation, I’ve decided to tackle only the so-called Big Four categories: Record, Album and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist. So here, for your wagering pleasure (and mine) are my predictions for the 2011 Grammy nominations. Record of the Year This is the Grammy for song of the year (in olde-tyme speak — and hip-hop — songs are referred to as “records”), though they might as well call it the Group of Death, since over the past 13 months, so many massive artists released so many massive songs. Last year, Academy voters gave the award to the Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” though this year, I have a feeling it could be a rapper taking home the hardware. My picks:

Soulja Boy Tell’em ‘Got Back On My Production’ For DeAndre Way

‘Pretty Boy Swag’ MC returns to “Rapfix Live” this Thursday. By Steven Roberts Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: MTV News Arguable one of the most polarizing figures in current hip-hop, Soulja Boy Tell’em has both die-hard fans and his share of critics who like to point out his preference for party over substance in his music. But the “Pretty Boy Swag” MC promises that his third studio album, The DeAndre Way, out on Tuesday (November 30), will show how much he has learned over the years, possibly pleasing fans and haters alike. “I’ve just been watching a lot of rappers, learning, taking notes,” Soulja told MTV News on the video set for the album’s third single, “Speaker Going Hammer.” “I’ve really been in the studio working on my production as producer, because I was rapping and jumping on so many different songs that I forgot that I produced the #1 song in the world. I really just sat and got back on my production. I worked on my lyrics and really I just made a good album, and I’m ready for my fans to hear it.” And if you want him to explain more about how his music has matured, you can ask him yourself this Thursday, when he makes his second appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” One artist who has helped Soulja evolve was his “Mean Mug” collaborator 50 Cent . Both were featured on the November cover of XXL, where they expressed their mutual admiration for each other. Soulja Boy said they faced common adversities, and 50 said if he could be any other artist it would be Soulja. On his video set, Soulja also talked about why he loves the opportunity to sit back, listen and learn from Fif. “When I talk to dudes like 50 Cent, when we working on songs or other business outside of the music industry, there’s always things that you can learn,” he told MTV News. “You always think that you know it all, but you don’t. When I’m around 50, he just likes to ramble. He can go on and talk. He can talk and talk and talk. And it’s so good for me, because I just listen and I soak it all up. And I take it and I put my own twist on it.” Soulja’s “Rapfix Live” interview will stream live online at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Tweet your burning questions for the “Crank Dat” rapper to @mtvnews (include the hashtag #rapfixlive so that we can track your questions). If you’d rather show your face on the Internet, record your question on video, upload it to Your.MTV.com and include “Soulja Boy Tell ’em” in the title of the clip. 3rd eye a way to watch your back: NYU artist gets camera implanted in head

NEW YORK – A New York University arts professor might not have eyes on the back of his head, but he's coming pretty close. Wafaa Bilal, a visual artist widely recognized for his interactive and performance pieces, had a small digital camera implanted in the back of his head — all in the name of art. Bilal said Tuesday that he underwent the procedure for an art project that was commissioned by a new museum in Doha, Qatar, in the Arab Gulf. Titled “The 3rd I,” it is one of 23 contemporary works commissioned for the opening of the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art on Dec. 30. The exhibition is entitled “Told/Untold/Retold.” “I am going about my daily life as I did before the procedure,” the Iraqi-born artist said in a statement. Bilal, who is teaching three courses this semester at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, will wear the camera for one year. It is 2 inches in diameter and less than an inch thick. The project will raise “important social, aesthetic, political, technological and artistic questions,” he said. He declined to say when the camera was implanted or other details of the art installation, saying it “will be revealed to the public as part of the museum preview on Dec. 15” and on a website to be launched on the same day, http://www.3rdi.me . He said he chose to have it put in the back of the head as an allegorical statement about the things we don't see and leave behind. How it all fits together is still a bit of a mystery. The camera will capture his everyday activities at one-minute intervals 24-hours a day and then be transmitted to monitors at the museum, said curators Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, who commissioned Bilal on behalf of the museum. “He doesn't have to alter his lifestyle or what he does. In principal, he's moving on with his life,” Bardaouil told The Associated Press from Doha. “It will be a three-dimensional, real space-and-time experience. Once the piece is revealed, you'll realize that the camera is only one aspect of the work and there are aspects as important that will be experienced.” The project has raised challenging questions for NYU, the nation's largest private school with about 44,000 students. “As a school of the arts, a school whose mission is to educate artists, we place a high value on his right to free expression in his creative work as an artist …,” NYU said in a statement. “We also take seriously the privacy issues his project raises, its impact on our students, and the importance of preserving trust in the pedagogical relationship between a faculty member and students.” NYU said it has had numerous “constructive and productive” conversations with the artist and was continuing “to discuss with him the right mechanism to ensure that his camera will not take pictures in NYU buildings.” But a number of students said they were not overly concerned about their privacy being violated. “I don't really know what you would be protecting them (students) from, what would be happening in the classroom that couldn't be shared,” said Erin Wahed, 22, who graduated in May with a BFA in photography but did not take any of Bilal's classes. Seth Mrocska, who was friends with some of Bilal's students but did not have him as a professor before graduating in May, agreed, saying “It's not that there's much to hide in the classroom.” However, he said he wasn't OK with the images being transmitted to another country and “shared across a media platform to be stored for all to view.” Bilal said “The 3rd I” builds on his other body of work that combines performance art, digital and body art and photography “into a unique conceptual piece.” Many of his previous works have invited debate and controversy. In a 2007 online installation, “Domestic Tension” in 2007, virtual users could shoot a paintball gun at Bilal 24 hours a day. The Chicago Tribune deemed it “one of the sharpest works of political art to be seen in a long time” and named him Artist of the Year that year. A 2008 video game piece, “Virtual Jihadi,” was censored by the city of Troy, N.Y. where it was shown. In it, Bilal inserted an avatar of himself as a suicide bomber hunting then-President George W. Bush. The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a claim against the city of Troy for closing the arts center showing the work. The artist has said the work was meant to shed light on groups that traffic in hateful stereotypes of Arab culture with video games like Quest for Saddam. In a recent live performance piece titled “…and Counting,” Bilal had his back tattooed with a borderless map of Iraq covered with one dot for each Iraqi and American casualty. Bilal, whose brother was killed by a missile at an Iraqi checkpoint in 2004, used the piece to highlight how the deaths of Iraqis are largely invisible to the American public. The dots for the Iraqis were represented by green UV ink only visible under black light, while Americans were represented by permanent ink. The 59,000-square-foot Mathaf museum will house more than 6,000 works of modern and contemporary Arab art from the collection of Sheik Hassan bin Mohamed bin Ali al Thani, founder of Mathaf and vice-chair of the Qatar Museum Authority. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101123/ap_on_en_ot/us_the3rd_eye added by: MotherForTruth

Rihanna Bested By Susan Boyle, Jackie Evancho On Billboard 200

Two “Talent” show singers top the charts, while Rihanna’s Loud debuts at #3. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Though it’s an American holiday, Thanksgiving must be turning into Susan Boyle ‘s favorite. After setting records last week with her second album, The Gift, former “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up Boyle will retain the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week thanks to sales of another 335,000 copies, and despite challenges from nine new competitors, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Last week, Boyle became the first woman, and only other artist besides the Beatles and the Monkees, to land two straight #1 albums within a calendar year in both England and the U.S. She retains the crown as another reality singer from a Simon Cowell-produced show, 10-year-old “America’s Got Talent” runner-up Jackie Evancho , comes in just behind with her debut EP, O Holy Night (#2, 239,000). That means Rihanna has to settle for a #3 debut for her fifth album, Loud, which sold 207,000 copies. It marked her best U.S. chart sales debut to date, besting the #4 bow of last year’s Rated R, which came in with sales of 181,000. She leads a parade of new names in the top 10 which also includes Josh Groban ‘s Rick Rubin-produced Illuminations (#4, 191,000), Kid Rock ‘s Rubin-produced Born Free (#5, 189,000), Rascal Flatts ‘ Nothing Like This (#6, 165,000), Keith Urban ‘s Get Closer (#7, 162,000), the “Glee” Christmas album (#8, 161,000) and Nelly ‘s 5.0 (#10, 63,000). The only other hold-over from last week’s top 10 is Taylor Swift , whose Speak Now figures dropped by more than 30 percent to 146,000 as her first month of sales crossed the 1.7 million mark. Pink ‘s greatest-hits collection, Greatest Hits So Far! , comes in at #14 (53,000), just beating out the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band ‘s Darkness on the Edge of Town outtakes collection The Promise (#16, 47,000). Season nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze set a new record for “Idol” champs, just not the kind he probably wanted. His first major-label effort, Live It Up, is officially the poorest-selling debut from an “Idol” champ in history, notching a lowly #19 chart bow on anemic sales of 39,000. The title was previously held by season-eight winner Kris Allen, whose debut hit the charts in 2009 at #11 on sales of 80,000. It was a very rough second week for Kid Cudi , whose Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager plummets nearly 80 percent to #21 on sales of 34,000, while Eminem ‘s Recovery drops 12 spots to #23 while holding steady on sales at 34,000 and crossing the 3 million mark. It was also a big comedown for Cee Lo , as his solo album The Lady Killer nosedives 30 spots to #39 after sales shriveled by 40 percent to 25,000. Despite selling 2 million digital tracks and 450,000 digital albums in their iTunes coming-out party, the Beatles have only one album in the top 50, with Abbey Road slipping in at #50 (19,000). Thirteen other digital albums chart in the lower regions of the top 200. The Fab Four are having better luck on the iTunes album chart, where Abbey Road comes in at #6 and a special box set closes out the tally at #10. But it is all Rihanna on that chart, as Loud holds the #1 slot, followed by the “Glee” Christmas album, Rascal Flatts, A Day to Remember ‘s What Separates Me From You, Urban, Swift, Groban and Kanye West ‘s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. iTunes doesn’t release sales figures, but “Glee” rules the singles countdown thanks to guest Gwyneth Paltrow’s cover of Cee Lo’s “Forget You,” followed by Ke$ha ‘s “We R Who We R,” Cee Lo’s own sanitized version of his profane hit single, Katy Perry ‘s “Firework,” Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” and the “Glee” cast’s recording of “Singing in the Rain/Umbrella.” The rest of the singles chart includes #7 song “What’s My Name?” by Rihanna and Drake , the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” and Far East Movement ‘s “Like a G6.” Things will get shuffled all over again next week with chart debuts from Kanye, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, My Chemical Romance, Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, Akon, Alan Jackson, Ke$ha and the “Burlesque” soundtrack. Amber Portwood’s Baby Now Indiana’s Problem

Teen Mom star Amber Portwood’s daughter is now a ward of the state of Indiana, meaning her guardianship is determined by a judge and government agency. It’s the latest, most dramatic development yet in the ongoing saga of the MTV star, whose troubled, often violent life has played out on the popular MTV show. Portwood and former fiance Gary Shirley appeared in an Anderson, Ind., courtroom Tuesday for an emergency child placement hearing concerning Leah. It’s official. Indiana has wrested control of Leah from Amber . As the Department of Child Services assesses Leah’s living situation, Leah, 2, remains under the state’s control, even though she is staying with Shirley. The Indiana Department of Child Services also supervised Amber Portwood’s most recent visit with Leah at Gary’s house, taking place Tuesday after court. Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley declined to comment outside court. Gary and Amber, whose violent altercations (which are basically one-sided, with him taking the pounding) appeared extremely friendly toward each other. DCS will monitor Amber’s progress in the wake of her felony battery charges , and determine if Gary’s home is suitable for Leah to remain in permanently. DCS has been probing Leah’s living situation at Shirley’s house and asked for changes that Shirley will comply with, one source close to the matter said. Under Indiana law, if a child is found to be a “child in need of services” (CHINS) the child then becomes a ward of the state, which happened in this case. Portwood gave Leah to Shirley recently, believing the toddler would be better off with him right now, given the demons she’s battling. It was for the best. Hopefully Clinton Yunker is there to comfort her in this tough time.

Adam Lambert: In Purple, Pot-Filled Haze

Adam Lambert often lights up whatever city in which he performs. This is typically due to impressive visual effects that have followed the artist around the globe on his Glam Nation Tour. However, in Amsterdam last night, Lambert took the concept to another level, appearing to smoke marijuana on stage. The pot comes out around the three-minute mark of another Purple Haze rendition , as Jimi Hendrix would certainly wouldn’t approve of this drug use. So would the city itself, which has no laws against marijuana. Watch, see for yourself and decide if you’re cool with the sight of Adam puffing away in front of fans: Adam Lambert in Amsterdam ** Remember: you watch watch Adam’s entire True Hollywood Story on THG RIGHT NOW !

Justin Bieber Named Artist of the Year

Simply put, Justin Bieber owned the American Music Awards last night. This 16-year old became the youngest singer to win Artist of the Year, adding that trophy to a haul that also included Pop/Rock Male, Breakthrough Artist and Album of the Year for “My World 2.0.” While on stage to accept the top honor, Bieber invited Usher to join him, referring to the R&B star as “not only my mentor but my best friend and my big brother.” It was a very nice moment, only topped for many by Justin’s rendition of “Pray,” a single off his upcoming acoustic album : Justin Bieber at the AMAs Other major winners at the AMAs included: Lady Gaga for Pop/Rock Female; The Black Eyed Peas for Pop/Rock Group; Brad Paisley for Male Country Artist; Taylor Swift for Female Country Artist; and Carrie Underwood for Country Album of the Year. But, really, it was a night of Bieber Fever all around. Relive Justin’s night via the following event photos:
