Justin Timberlake Isn’t Behind Leaked Track ‘Take You Down,’ Rep Says

‘Justin has no involvement with either the song or the artist,’ JT’s rep says of tune by Danish recording artist. By James Dinh Justin Timberlake Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Contrary to reports, Justin Timberlake is not the singer behind a track called “Take You Down,” a rep confirmed to MTV News on Monday (January 3). The song, which was reportedly produced by the Neptunes, began circulating on the Internet on Thursday and was believed to be a previously unreleased JT tune. “Various media outlets recently reported that a song called ‘Take You Down’ is a new track from Justin Timberlake. These reports are untrue,’ the singer’s rep said in a statement to MTV News. “Justin has no involvement with either the song or the artist but wants to assure his fans that when he releases new music, they will be the first to know.” Despite the JT resemblance, the track is actually by Danish artist Rasmus Thude and titled “LLL (Love, Liquor, Lick It).” MTV News regrets the error. Fans will have to wait to hear new music from Timberlake , who has said in a number of recent interviews that he isn’t ready to record the follow-up to 2006’s FutureSex/ LoveSounds. “I want to conceptualize something a little bit more,” he recently told the Los Angeles Times. “And it’s probably because of the experience I’m having working with directors and screenwriters and getting to play cool characters. If that means I come up with, like, my version of ‘Ziggy Stardust,’ so be it. Who knows? What I’ve learned from acting in movies, I want to apply to music and see what happens.” Related Artists Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears Vs. Lady Gaga: Fans Weigh In

Fans are split between Gaga and Britney as 2011’s Queen of Pop. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears and Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images On Monday, MTV News tried to forecast whether Lady Gaga or Britney Spears will be 2011’s ruling diva. And while our experts decided it was sort of a toss-up, commenters on our predictions had very strong opinions on that epic question. With nearly 1,500 posts between the Newsroom blog and the Gaga vs. Britney article , here are the results of fans’ votes on the matter. Spears won the poll on the Newsroom blog with more than 60 percent of the vote. Britney fanatics stated their overwhelming support for the singer. “The one and only legend Britney Spears from past to present, she’s the most popular on the planet,” Jojo wrote. “We the supporters love Britney Spears a lot. We buy her perfume, CDs … we are here for her. The legend is coming through.” Daniel wrote, “You never know what to expect from Lady Gaga but I think that THE REAL QUEEN OF POP is back … TEAM BRITNEY!” Meanwhile, commenter CrazySpears wrote, “I think GAGA is ok but people can never compare her with Britney … you know Britney is the Queen.” But Gaga’s little monsters were also out in full support of their mother monster. ” Born This Way will be the album of the decade and that’s a fact,” Little wrote. “2011 is Gaga’s year, again.” Imtherealbatman wrote, “LADY GAGA FTW! Lady Gaga is the shizz dude. She is going to win this war. I LOVE YOU LADY GAGA!” Another Gaga commenter, Carl, added, “WHAT COMPETITION IS THERE !?! Have you not seen the impact Lady Gaga has done to pop culture today?! Bringing dance music back on the scene, creating a buzz by standing up for gay rights, connecting to her fans in a way NO other artist has!?” In the end, commenter Kyle proposed that it’s really anyone’s game. “Well, just in case you were saying I’m not a devoted Gaga fan, you’re wrong. Born This Way is all I think about. But I love Britney just as much. And neither is superior,” he wrote. “They are famous for their own reasons and it doesn’t matter what they are. What matters is how much devotion and loyalty they get from fans. Britney’s fanbase has been and always will be huge. Just like Gaga’s is growing strong.” Who do you think will rule in 2011, Lady Gaga or Britney Spears? Tell us in the comments below! How Katy Perry Avoided A Sophomore Slump

Critics weigh in on pop star’s rise thanks to Teenage Dream . By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In 2008, Katy Perry proclaimed she was One of the Boys , going around town kissing girls and “Waking Up in Vegas.” Then two years later, Perry released her triumphant sophomore effort, Teenage Dream , a spirited mix of sugary love ballads and feisty anthems. Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs. While her contemporaries were busy rapping, like Ke$ha , or making grandiose political statements, like Lady Gaga, Perry just wanted to have fun. She wanted her fans to dance around in daisy dukes, and it paid off: She had a string of #1 hits including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and her empowerment anthem “Firework.” So, when MTV News asked a few critics just what it is that helped solidify Perry’s pop star status in 2010, they had this to say: Perry looks like a pop star, but isn’t as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, “She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess. “What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist’s growth, and I think that she’s challenging. I think she’s brash and bold.” Plus, over the course of the past 12 months, she’s used that persona to sell herself and her music. “She’s very good at the marketing side of things,” Noah Callahan of Complex explained. “She has a very clear aesthetic. It’s very digestible and understandable, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s very easy on the eyes.” Writer Julianne Esobado-Shepard credits Perry’s kooky persona as one of the reasons why she’s been so embraced by pop lovers. “She’s got hooks. Again, [her producer] Dr. Luke just kind of murdered it, especially with ‘Teenage Dream,’ ” she said. “She’s sort of a blank slate in a way. She’s like an avatar of what people think they want, which is again like boobs. The fact that she likes shooting things out of her boobs so much has really gone a long way for her career.” What do you like best about Katy Perry? Sound off below! Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The ‘Masses,’ Wolfgang Gartner Says

‘He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,’ producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images It’s no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music (EDM) here in the States. With deadmau5 and suddenly becoming household names, EDM’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre. Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner , who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music’s rise to the top. “He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,” Gartner says, “but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love.” Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically “House Artist”) for the 2010 VMAs, EDM has been thrown into the forefront of America’s youth, a key demographic for any genre. “Everybody knows who he is now and he’s kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this ‘mau5head’ logo — they get into the music and he’s bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn’t be exposed to it.” Gartner certainly doesn’t mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer’s hottest anthems, “Animal Rights,” a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner. “It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with].” said Gartner. “I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process.” Recorded in deadmau5’s favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee’s House — “Animal Rights” is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang’s unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving baseline and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world. “[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result,” Gartner goes on to say. “It just proves you don’t have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music.” The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other’s strengths while recording the track. “I’d say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums,” says Gartner. “I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical.” What do you think 2011 will hold for deadmau5 and Gartner? Prince Brings The Party To New Jersey Concert

The Purple One delighted the Izod Center crowd at his Welcome 2 America Tour stop on Friday with a career-spanning set and some special guests. By Hillary Crosley Prince (file) Photo: Jens Dige/Scanpix/AFP Photo What man can make three-inch gold heels and a glittering top work? Only , of course. On Friday, the Purple One performed at New Jersey’s Izod Center for his Welcome 2 America Tour before a packed crowd, seated well into the nose-bleeds. Drawing from his early catalogue, the icon began the show with a medley of “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Delirious.” Working a stage shaped like the symbol he was “formerly known as,” Prince strutted in a black suit detailed with gold trim while sporting his signature short haircut. His band included three background singers — dressed in everything from feathers to polka dots — a female bassist, two keyboardists and a drummer. Maintaining the energy, the Minneapolis native kicked off “1999” with a question, “What’d y’all come to do . party?” Then, with a spotlight focused on him alone, Prince squealed a slow rendition of “Little Red Corvette” that sped up during each chorus only to smooth out again when it returned to the verses. Taking his jacket off, he threw the garment on the ground to reveal a bejeweled scarf slung around his neck as the fans screamed and the Grammy award winner disappeared below the stage. In the following act, Prince, now wearing a mustard-colored silk pantsuit with a ruffled top, returned to the stage alongside ballerina . Copeland is the first African American female soloist in the American Ballet Theatre. As she twirled around the stage, the two created a sensual high-art version of “The Beautiful Ones,” where each danced atop the stage’s purple piano. During “Controversy,” famed funk saxophonist took the stage for a worthy solo as Prince directed the audience. “I don’t care what they told, wave your phones side to side!” he said, just before asking the crowd, “What shall we do? Can I do some for me?” Breaking into “Take Me With You,” as confetti began to pour from the ceiling and onto the stage, the singer and his band moved seamlessly into “Guitar,” from Prince’s 2007 LP, Planet Earth. The lights then dimmed and became purple as the band strummed the introduction to perhaps the biggest song of the artist’s career, “Purple Rain.” Walking around the stage, the petite performer encouraged his New York and New Jersey fans to sing the cut’s bridge before he belted out the lyrics himself. As the song came to an end, Prince disappeared below the stage once again. Talented drummer Sheila E then arose, flanked by a drum kit, as the Izod Center shook with applause. The “Krush Groove” star, sporting a sequin tank top, pants and over-the-knee boots, banged out her 1984 hit, “The Glamorous Life,” before Prince joined in for their duet “Love Bizarre.” To the delight of Sheila’s enthusiasts, who were standing in their seats with excitement, she performed an impromptu drum solo and then Prince invited audience members to the stage for the Morris Day & the Time cuts “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.” Waving goodbye, Prince, Sheila and the band disappeared backstage. But the crowd would not accept their departure. Wooed by applause and cheers, Prince returned for an encore and ran through “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “Insatiable” and “Scandalous” before finally wishing everyone a good night. Have you caught or are you planning to attend any of Prince’s Welcome 2 America shows? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Prince

Diddy-Dirty Money Invite MTV News Aboard Last Train To Paris

‘I don’t think you’re an artist until people start looking at you like you’re crazy,’ Diddy says as Sway tags along for a day in the life of the trio. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Diddy-Dirty Money visit a Best Buy in Manhattan to sign some Last Train To Paris CDs Photo: MTV News When MTV News flipped on the camera to document Diddy-Dirty Money’s promotional grind for Last Train to Paris on Tuesday, the Bad Boy CEO was firmly in mogul mode, typing away on his smartphone as he sat in an SUV ready to hit the town with MTV News’ Sway for a daylong “RapFix Live” interview . But with Paris, the debut effort from Diddy-Dirty Money, on shelves, the businessman has to juggle the demands of both an artist and an executive — a type of multitasking he revealed he has not done for a long time. “I’ve just been so taken aback just by how it’s been received. I’m not used to being on that side,” Diddy said. The frontman also added that he feels vindicated by the positive reviews Paris has been scoring, despite dealing with critical side-eyes since the project was first announced. “I don’t think you’re an artist until people start looking at you like you’re crazy,” he said. “It’s been a couple years of people looking at me like I’m crazy, and I think that’s one of the things all the interviews and reviews have admitted. ‘Yeah, we thought he was crazy with the concept, but he proved to be right.’ ” When the ladies of Dirty Money, Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper, entered the vehicle, the singers focused on the exhilaration of finally having the project available to the masses. “I’m so excited, Sway. It’s crazy,” Harper said. “We just keep staring at each other like, ‘We did it!’ ” When their Swizz Beatz-assisted track “Ass on the Floor” pumps through the speakers from New York’s Hot 97, it’s obvious how amped they are, bopping to the beat and spitting the lyrics. Even though Diddy isn’t new to the artist game, he maintained that the thrill of hearing his track hit the airwaves never goes away. Even with stacks of hits behind him, Diddy revealed that he still has a superstition he sticks to for every drop date. “You gotta buy 10 copies of your own album. It’s, like, something I’ve always done every year, for good luck,” he said. “It’s like [when] you vote. You vote for yourself, right?” The convoy arrived at Best Buy in New York’s Union Square a little while later, and staying true to his tradition, Diddy strolled down the aisles to find the Dirty Money records and picked out a stack. But the “Coming Home” rapper said the practice isn’t limited to artists, saying to fans, “You could buy 10 too. You could join in.” The star also urged gawking shoppers to throw down some cash in between posing for photos with fans. For some, a job where the boss is constantly around may be stressful, but Harper maintained that she appreciated having instant access to Diddy’s years of expertise and input. Richard added that being an integral part of the boss’ pet project also means it gets top priority. “It’s also dope because you know that the product will not go in vain because it’s the CEO and it’s his project,” she said. “You know that it’s gonna be 10 times more pushed because it is his baby.” Richard also added that the creative breadth of Paris, which ropes in everything from slinky house to jangly electro, afforded the ex-Danity Kane diva more creative freedom. “This is my third album, and having to conform so much in pop culture and people saying, ‘Oh, your voice isn’t this’ and ‘Your voice isn’t that,’ it was really refreshing to be able to do what I felt and be the tone [I wanted] and Kalenna to be able to sing the way we wanted to sing,” she explained. “I have a more rock/pop sound, but I do it over more hip-hop stuff. That was just something I didn’t feel like I had to conform [to] at all,” Harper said. “I just sounded like I sounded.” Later, the promo train headed back to the Bad Boy headquarters, where the trio got on a conference call with media outlets. When one journalist asked Diddy to respond to snipes that he’s no longer relevant, the star was quick with a retort. “They better turn on the TV, man, and walk outside and breathe some air. I’m like air, baby,” he said. “If I ain’t relevant, then who is?” The mogul later dropped in on an artist whose relevance in 2010 hasn’t really been contested: Justin Bieber . The teen sensation was working on some new music when Diddy stopped by to officially appoint him a member of the Dirty Money family, gifting him with a black-and-white “DM” letterman’s jacket. The mogul also hooked him up with the official “swag walk” of the Dirty Money crew, coolly instructing Bieber how to stroll and use his free hand for “pushin’ the hate back, ’cause there’s a lot of hate sometimes.” Proving he’s a quick study, Bieber suavely bopped along behind Diddy, pushing back the hate like a Dirty Money pro. The Situation Accused of Cyber-Jacking Shirtless Painting

Jersey Shore star The Situation (Mike Sorrentino) has been accused of posting an image online without the creator’s consent … feel ya on that, Sitch! Celeste Gillis, an artiste, created the wonderful shirtless painting of The Situation you see below. She contacted him on Facebook last month about it. It’s a decision she likely regrets in light of the current situation. Celese immortalized Mike on canvas and told him that he could either purchase the work for a price … or else credit her art website on his Facebook page. Instead, Sitch posted it without doing either. But he did add a caption: “THE MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND.” Wait, that has nothing to do with the artist either. Hilariously, Gillis says she never asked him to take down the pic … because she didn’t think he would understand copyright laws. Probably pretty spot on.
