Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Other VMA Winners Thank Fans On Twitter

‘We did it together and we are just getting started!!!’ Bieber tweets to his fans. By Josh Wigler Lady Gaga after the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: twitter.com/ladygaga “Woke up … had a good breakfast … got a smile on my face … everyone is feeling good … it’s finally here.” “It,” of course, refers to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the speaker in question is none other than “Baby” singer Justin Bieber . On Sunday, Bieber — who was nominated for Best New Artist — tweeted to his legions of Twitter followers to express his excitement over the impending awards show. “Regardless of what happens, I’m lucky to have the greatest fans ever,” he wrote . “So thank you!” By the end of the night, Bieber had more than luck and his fans on his side — he also had a Moonman to call his own. “Wow. What?? Are you kidding. What!!?!” an ecstatic Bieber tweeted immediately following his win for Best New Artist . “Can’t stop smiling!” Bieber offered his thanks to a wide range of supporters, from his mother to his manager, Scooter Braun, to legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris . The singer acknowledged that he was likely leaving someone out, so he simply decided to thank “everybody.” “Biggest thank you in the world to the greatest fans in the world,” he wrote. “We did it together and we are just getting started!!!” Of course, Bieber wasn’t the only musician lucky enough to leave the Nokia Theatre with a shiny new trophy. Lady Gaga , for instance, went home with a walloping eight awards, including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year. “Too much poetry tonight,” Lady G tweeted , along with a photo of herself , after the show was over. “But u love u, + I love I, + we were #bornthisway.” 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto was equally grateful after winning the Best Rock Video award for “Kings and Queens.” “An unforgettable and amazing night,” he tweeted . “We are the luckiest band in the world to be able to share our lives with all of you.” Sadly, not everyone was able to claim victory at the VMAs. Drake, who lost Best Hip-Hop Video to Eminem, ended the night with his head held high despite the loss. “Thank you for all the love tonight,” he told his Twitter followers. “I had the time of my life.” Hayley Williams of Paramore had a similar outlook, despite losing Best Rock Video and three other awards for her collaboration with B.o.B on “Airplanes.” “Even though we didn’t win, our time was up on that stage,” Williams tweeted . “We had the best time performing. So we still won!” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Taylor Swift’s All-Time Best VMA Moments

Since her debut just two years ago, Taylor Swift has had some memorable appearances at the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ Wireimage.com Taylor Swift made a triumphant return to the VMA stage on Sunday night with a new ballad, which may or may not be directed at Kanye West, off her forthcoming October release, Speak Now. Dressed in a strapless, beige dress, Swift spilled her guts and forgave someone for wronging her in the past. This wasn’t Swift’s first time at the VMA rodeo , though. Her beginnings trace all the way back to 2008, when she was nominated for Best New Artist for her unrequited love ballad “Teardrops on My Guitar.” And while Swift wouldn’t end up taking home a Moonman that year, she did get the honor of being a co-host at the pre-show , and went public with her then beau, Joe Jonas. Swift had a pretty easygoing 2008 VMAs compared to what went down the following year. In 2009, she hit the carpet in a stunning, Grecian-draped silver-sparkled dress and won Best Female Video. We all know how that turned out, but she didn’t let it get her down. Mere minutes after accepting the award, she performed her winning song, “You Belong With Me.” Decked out in a hot red dress, exuberantly belting out her hit in a moving subway and on top of a taxi cab in the middle of Manhattan, Swift stood outside the Radio City Music Hall and almost made everyone forget about what happened earlier that night. That brings us to the 2010 VMAs, when Swift once again hit the stage. This time Swift, who was up for Best Female Video again, played her captivating new tune, which still has no official title. In it she sings, “I guess you really did it this time/ Left yourself in your war path/ Lost your balance on a tightrope/ Lost your mind trying to get it back.” While many had hoped West and Swift would take the stage together, it wasn’t to be. Well, there’s always the 2011 VMAs. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Justin Bieber Wins Best New Artist VMA

Newbie caps off a big year with a Moonman for smash video ‘Baby.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images This year, a slew of music newbies pumped out catchy hits and worked a signature style, be it side-swept bangs or cartoonish wigs. With so many choices, it’s a good thing we left the business of picking this year’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Best New Artist up to the fans at home. And to no one’s surprise, they chose Justin Bieber . The VMA rookie took home the Moonman for the smash clip “Baby.” The video was up against some chart-topping competition, as Jason Der

Eminem, Other Performers Find Fitting Home In VMA Set

Eye-popping design puts mid-century architecture ‘through the prism of 2010,’ says show’s executive producer. By James Montgomery The VMA stage during Usher’s rehearsal Photo: Ciel VanderVeen/MTV LOS ANGELES — Sure, stars like Lady Gaga, Eminem, Kanye West and Justin Bieber are getting top billing at the Video Music Awards. But all of that might change the minute the show goes live on Sunday (September 12), because there’s a much bigger star waiting to steal their thunder: the VMA set itself. Custom-made in New York and Los Angeles, assembled over the course of two (very long) weeks inside the Nokia Theatre and drawing inspiration from the sleek mid-century designs of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the set is a massive, all-encompassing thing, swooping and soaring (like, really high ) and practically swallowing up the entirety of the theatre itself. It’s so impressive, in fact, that you don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate it. “Everyone who walks in and sees it is like, ‘Aaah!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. ” Rick Ross came in and said, ‘It’s like Pandora.’ ” Without revealing too many details — mostly because details don’t really do it justice — the VMA set is a multi-tiered, multi-layered design that stretches more than 70 feet out into the theatre seats, and just as high in the air. There are portions made out of tightly stretched fabric, giving the set a living, organic feel. A giant panoramic video screen stretches behind the entirety of the thing. There are LED lights everywhere . And, of course, there’s . Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. “What we wanted to do is to use this black box — which is what the Nokia is — in a kind of different way. We tried to create a more intimate space, and that’s one of the reason why we created a kind of center stage and brought it much closer to the audience,” production designer Florian Wieder said. “What I tried to do was create a kind of three-dimensional space, where the entire space is part of the show. We use it all … the whole ceiling, the floor, the walls. It’s really an impressive thing.” And while the design is based on the sort of classic mid-century architecture that defines Los Angeles, the set, much like the show itself, is far from stodgy. Quite the opposite, in fact. “It’s based on mid-century architecture, only put through the prism of 2010,” Sirulnick said. “It’s classic design that reaches through the eras, just like the music itself.” Like we said … you have to see this thing. Sure, Gaga and all the stars are great, but the set is really something too. Tune in and see for yourself. Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Florence And The Machine’s ‘Dog Days’ Fights As VMA Underdog

The Video of the Year contender is up against heavyweights like Eminem and Lady Gaga. By Mawuse Ziegbe Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage Singer Florence Welch, of the British outfit Florence and the Machine, has called the group’s four MTV Video Music Award nods, including Video of the Year, for “Dog Days Are Over” “the most incredible thing ever.” Even with its arresting mish-mash of blue-skinned, bee-hived dancers and cloaked percussionists grooving through thick plumes of colored smoke and explosions, the video has some tough competition. With Lady Gaga’s Internet-stirring “Bad Romance” and comeback king Eminem’s “Not Afraid” in the ring, the U.K. newcomers are facing some major competition. But don’t count out the Machine, as Welch has turned in a visually arresting clip powered by a seriously booty-quivering beat. “I wrote ‘Dog Days’ in a [closet] with my friend Isabella [Summers]. We had no instruments, we banged our hands against the walls. We were using pans as instruments,” said Welch, who has promised an “otherworldly” performance of the song on the VMA stage on Sunday. “We did it for fun, and then the video … I wanted it to be as artistic as possible. It wasn’t about being pretty.” Welch, who flits through the video like an avant-garde geisha leading a motley orchestra of instrumentalists until they literally explode, said the video was all about making a statement. “I wanted something that was striking and made me look a bit scary, so for it to be recognized at something as huge as the VMAs is the most incredible thing, and I’m just really grateful for the opportunity to go,” Welch said of “Dog Days,” which is also up for Best Rock Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. “It’s incredible.” “Dog Days” has been making a lot of noise for the group, who were named one of MTV News’ Rock Week Artists to Watch in 2010. The song’s high-octane thump rumbled through ads for the Julia Roberts summer hit “Eat Pray Love,” and Welch will bring the track’s thunderous energy to the VMA stage. “What we’re trying to do is kind of encapsulate the video into a live performance,” Welch said recently . “There’s a lot of different characters in the video, and so I’m going to be trying to bring some of that. It’s just about the energy of the song, for me. It’s sort of energy and chaos. There’s people, like, actually physically exploding in the video, and hopefully that won’t happen. If everyone’s really into it, that’s fine with me, but we haven’t planned it.” Even if Eminem snatches the Video of the Year statue from the Machine, Welch may not feel too bad, since she’s also a longtime fan. “The first single I ever bought was ‘The Real Slim Shady,’ and my sister said that I should bring it to the VMAs and get him to sign it,” Welch said. “That’d be so funny. I’d be like, ‘Hi, I bought this from Woolworth’s when I was 11, can you sign it for me?’ He’d be like, ‘What’s Woolworth’s?’ ” What is your favorite Florence and the Machine video? Steve-O Says ‘Jackass 3D’ Shows ‘Totally Different Me’

‘Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful,’ he says of ‘scary’ stunts in flick previewing at Sunday’s VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena Steve-O Photo: MTV News Fans won’t have to wait until October 15 to get a taste of the mayhem set to take place in “Jackass 3D.” An exclusive clip from the flick will premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards , where the cast will also be presenting on Sunday. One of the movie’s stars, Steve-O, is super excited for fans to check out the preview. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be awesome. We made a great movie. Everybody’s gonna love it. People are gonna be waiting to see how being sober and filming ‘Jackass’ is different [for me],” he told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. “Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful, more scary and the first thing I say is, ‘I’m Steve-O, why do I have to be Steve-O?’ ” He wouldn’t get too specific about his favorite part of the movie, but Steve-O did note that the film starts with one very eye-catching scene. “I think that after the opening credits, like, the first scene that I’m in, I think it’s pretty great,” he said. “It’s just awesome. It’s a good movie.” While doing many of the painful stunts in “Jackass 3D” proved to be quite the challenge for a now-sober Steve-O , he was certainly up for it. “I was eager to do as much as I could. I, unlike Johnny Knoxville and some of the other guys, was feeling pretty sure I didn’t want to risk paralysis or death,” he joked. ‘Knoxville just needs to risk paralysis and death, but that being the case, I was really eager to get involved in as much stuff as I could, and I think I’m in this new movie more than either of the first two. It was a totally different me and it was a real blessing to do that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.
