Swizz Beatz Could ‘Get Used To’ Performing At The VMAs

Swizz is set to perform ‘Fancy’ with Drake and Mary J. Blige Sunday night. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Swizz Beatz Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage LOS ANGELES — Celebrated party-starter Swizz Beatz will have a very different vantage point at the MTV Video Music Awards this year. Swizz will be a performer at the show rather than his usual position as spectator. “I’m used to seeing people perform my music on the VMA stage while I sit back and watch like a proud dad and a fan,” he said Friday in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Swizz and Mary J. Blige will take to the stage as Drake’s special guests to perform “Fancy” on Sunday night. “But to actually be on that stage during rehearsal, it was like, ‘I can get used to this.’ This is probably where I need to be next year … by myself. So it was super-inspiring to rock with Drake and to have Mary out there. It’s gonna be fun.” Also on Friday, Drake revealed that his performance was inspired by Frank Sinatra and his legendary homies. “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake recalled. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” The song “Fancy” has its own interesting story. The record was originally supposed to be on Mary J. Blige’s 2009 Stronger With Each Tear, but did not make the cut due to scheduling. Swizz Beatz was going to hold it for his own LP, but after talking to Drake about collaborating for Thank Me Later, he handed the tune over to the 23-year-old. ” ‘Fancy’ has been well-traveled,” Swizz Beatz said over the summer in New Orleans. “It started off as a Swizz record. Then I got Mary [J. Blige] on it. It was supposed to be on her [ Stronger With Each Tear ], but we missed the deadline. Then I pulled it back for my [upcoming] record. Then five o’clock one morning, on the phone speaking with Drake, he’s in a different time zone, we’re trying to figure out what he needs [for his album]. He’s like, ‘Yo, I just need a record for the ladies.’ I’m on my computer playing him joints over the phone. Then I played him ‘Fancy.’ I was like, ‘You want something like this?’ But I was playing it as a reference.” “He was like, ‘That’s the record I need,’ ” Swizz continued. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll make you that.” And as history shows, Drake didn’t want something like “Fancy,” he wanted “Fancy.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Carter Travie McCoy Photo: MTV News While Travie McCoy fans are no doubt excited to see him perform at the VMAs, we wondered, who does he most want to see perform at the awards show on Sunday? “Definitely stoked to see Eminem ,” McCoy told MTV News of Slim Shady, the show’s opener. “I’m really excited to also see what deadmau5 is doing. Lady Gaga, Chelsea Handler Have VMA Fan In Natasha Bedingfield

Bedingfield sings the praises of friend Handler and former tourmate Gaga. By Jocelyn Vena Natasha Bedingfield Photo: MTV News When the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards kick off on Sunday, “Unwritten,” singer Natasha Bedingfield will be rooting for two of her pals, nominee Lady Gaga and VMA host Chelsea Handler . Bedingfield isn’t placing any bets on how many Moonmen the 13-time nominated Gaga will take home, but she says her former tourmate deserves her latest accolades. “I was on tour with Lady Gaga two years ago, and I got to know her a bit, and she’s just fantastic. So, I hope that she wins for one of them, at least, ’cause that’s cool,” Bedingfield told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. “She was opening for me and New Kids on the Block on the road. It was awesome! We were just two girls going around going to different states in America.” While Gaga will certainly have everyone talking by the water cooler on Monday, Bedingfield thinks that Handler will have everyone hoping for a return performance at next year’s show. “[Chelsea] will have to have a lot of outfits too! I love her so much. She’s going to be amazing. She’ll probably be the best one you guys have ever had I think,” Bedingfield said. “She’s just amazing. I love her, and she’s always very honest, and I appreciate that, because there’s always a lot of people who kiss your ass all the time in this business. And it’s just nice to be with someone you just feel comfortable with and you know they’re not going to blow smoke.” So, what is it like to be friends with the sassy comedian? “She’s funny. She lets other people be funny. I think that’s how you can tell someone is, like, comfortable with themselves,” she said. “They don’t mind people being funny and them being quiet, and sometimes she’ll be the funny one.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Kim Kardashian Talks Justin Bieber Beef With Chelsea Handler

‘I used to like her,’ reality star teases about VMA host. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Everyone loves a good catfight, and it seems like one just might happen at Sunday’s Video Music Awards . VMA presenter and reality starlet Kim Kardashian admits that, since host Chelsea Handler called Justin Bieber a “two face” and blamed Kardashian for stealing her man, things have been tense. “Chelsea and I have this, you know, [beef],” she joked at a QVC Fashion’s Night Out event in New York on Friday (September 10). “I used to like her. We’re on the same network, but now it’s just, you know … we can’t really be in the same room together. It gets really bad on the E! studios. They have totally roped off Chelsea on one section, me on the other. You know, it’s, I don’t want to talk about it.” Handler has been quite open about her discomfort with Bieber’s love-’em-and-leave-’em style. “He’s using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I’m not gonna fall for that,” she said. “I’m 35 years old. I only have about five good years left in me, and I’m not going to waste my time on that guy.” While Kardashian might not be excited to run into Handler on Sunday night, she is looking forward to the possibility of her pal, Bieber, taking home a Moonman for Best New Artist. “That’s amazing! I wish him the best of luck,” she said. “I hope he wins it. I don’t know who he’s up against, but I hope he wins.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Justin Bieber Raps On Our World Mixtape With Sean Kingston

‘Eenie Meenie’ pal says Biebs’ MCing is ‘nice for someone who doesn’t do it that much.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images First they collaborated on “Eenie Meenie,” and then they hit the road together on Justin Bieber’s My World Tour . Now, the pair are set to release a mixtape together — which Kingston teased would feature Biebs’ sweet vocals and some rhymes. “It should be out in, like, three weeks,” Kingston told MTV News. “It’s amazing! It’s the exclusive. Justin Bieber, Sean Kingston, it’s called Our World. It’s amazing.” Kingston even teased a song or two fans will hear on the soon-to-be-released mixtape of covers. “We did [Travie McCoy’s] ‘Billionaire.’ We did [Soulja Boy Tell’em’s] ‘Pretty Boy Swag.’ We did so much stuff. We just took the beat over and made it our own.” In fact, Bieber, who has rapped at times, will be displaying his skills on the mixtape. “Yeah, he’s doing some rapping,” he teased. “[He’s] pretty tight, nice for someone who doesn’t do it that much.” Until the mixtape hits the shelves, Kingston is gearing up to support his pal at the VMAs, where Bieber is performing and up for Best New Artist. And he even has a date in mind. “I think I’m gonna [bring] my mom,” he said. “After the VMAs, I drop her back off, and then it’s time to party.” Speaking of that party known as the VMAs, the night’s host, Chelsea Handler, admitted that Bieber’s music really speaks to her. “He knows so much about romance,” she said. “If you listen to the lyrics of ‘Baby, Baby, Baby,’ or is it just called ‘Baby’? I have to say it three times, ’cause it makes my heart thump. He’s obviously been around the block. I mean, I don’t know why he’s pretending he’s not a sexual deviant, because he is.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Linkin Park Will Take Over An L.A. Landmark For VMAs

We can’t reveal exactly where they’ll perform ‘The Catalyst,’ but here are some clues. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: Warner Bros. The fact that Linkin Park are performing their brand-new single “The Catalyst” at the Video Music Awards isn’t a secret anymore, but just where they’ll be performing it is … and fans won’t find out until they tune in to the show on Sunday night. Here’s what we can reveal: Since LP will be performing the song for the first time on TV, and since the song itself is so positively ginormous, they’ve decided on a location that’s certifiably epic. And given the fact that the VMAs are being held in Los Angeles, producers — and the band — decided to take over a thoroughly iconic space. And … well, that’s about all we can tell you right now. “In previous years, we had such a terrific themes. Last year, we were in New York, and so there was a New York, ‘West Side Story’ through line to the show,” VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told MTV News. “So obviously, we wanted to do the same thing in LA. And we’re looking back towards another era — in the architecture of set and some of the performances — we’re thinking of iconic films from the ’50s and youth culture, and all of a sudden, this location became first and foremost.” Having decided on a spot, the VMA brain trust took the idea to Linkin Park, who signed off without a second thought. After all, they know the location well. “They were so excited, being an L.A. band, to be able to do a performance in a location like this,” Ignjatovic said. “It’s such a significant location to anyone who lives in Hollywood and Los Angeles. And we honestly can’t believe we got it.” With a location that matches the soaring soundscapes of “The Catalyst,” Ignjatovic and his crew set about finding an appropriately huge way to capture it all. Which, of course, meant plenty of eye-popping aerial shots. “It’s an epic song and an epic location, so, in true Hollywood cinematic style, you want to have breathtaking aerial shots,” Ignjatovic said. “The whole idea is scale and beautiful visuals. It fits perfectly with the song. It’s going to be awesome, trust me.” Where would you want to see Linkin Park perform “The Catalyst”? Share your ideas in the comments below. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.
