‘It’s a rare thing for a boy band. … I don’t know of a whole lot of boy bands that do that,’ Nick Jonas tells MTV News. By John Mitchell Nick and Joe Jonas Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage The Jonas Brothers rode easily into the second round of our Battle of the Boy Bands , demolishing Menudo by taking 80 percent of the vote. But they are facing stiff competition from another group of three real-life brothers in round two: Hanson. With the JoBros back in the studio working on a comeback album, and with each brother (Joe, Nick and Kevin) pursuing his own solo effort, they remain one of the most active bands in the competition. So why vote Jonas? Read on. Strongest Chart Achievement Well, it certainly doesn’t get much better than having the #1 album in the country, and the Jo Bros have had two: 2008’s A Little Bit Longer and 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times. Longer is the real jewel in the Brothers’ crown, though, shifting an impressive 525,402 copies in its debut frame. On the strength of the hit single “Burnin’ Up,” the album held on to the #1 spot in its second week of release and continued to sell briskly on its way to going double platinum in the U.S. A Little Bit Longer remains the band’s best-selling album and even earned a spot on Rolling Stone ‘s list of the best albums of 2008. Standout Video Since they didn’t make much of an impression on mainstream audiences with their debut (see below), the brothers started anew when they joined Hollywood Records and amped up their pop sound for their self-titled sophomore album. The album’s first single, “Year 3000,” brought them plenty of mainstream attention, but its second single, “S.O.S.,” kicked things up even further. The song became the group’s first top 20 hit, buoyed by its video, which was filmed on the RMS Queen Mary superliner in the summer of 2007. With well over 93 million views, the “S.O.S.” video is easily the band’s most-viewed clip. Defining Tune For its sheer crossover appeal, it’s gotta be “Burnin’ Up.” The song is the JoBros biggest hit by far, debuting to strong enough digital sales to spur a #5 opening on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it their highest charting song to date. This single was a sales smash, moving more than 2 million digital downloads to become the band’s second platinum-selling song after “S.O.S.,” and it became a bona fide radio hit over the summer of 2008. As much as we love our boy bands, they aren’t often embraced by critics. However, this song, like its mothership album A Little Bit Longer, was. The acclaim Longer and “Burnin’ Up” earned helped the JoBros along to their lone Grammy nomination (for Best New Artist) in 2009. Debut Album The Jonas Brothers’ first album as a group — Nick released a solo album before he, Joe and Kevin united to create the band — was 2006’s It’s About Time. The record was pretty low-profile (to say the least), though it managed to make an impression in the Christian market and sell 62,000 copies in the U.S. The lack of interest the album generated for the band led to them being dropped from Columbia Records, though they were snapped up by Hollywood Records almost immediately. While it didn’t generate much heat for the boys in 2006, the album has become something of a collector’s item for fans in the years since, and because it is currently out of print, copies are rare and expensive on online auction sites like eBay. Biggest Competition The Jonas Brothers are currently embroiled in a tough showdown with Hanson, another brotherly threesome with an affinity for playing guitars and penning their own tunes (both boy-band rarities). Hanson is decidedly ’90s and the Bros are very of the aughts, meaning its unlikely they share a fanbase, but Hanson has one thing going for them that the JoBros don’t: nostalgia. People have a way of romanticizing their fond recollections of the recent past, so the Jonases have a real battle here. When we asked Nick Jonas why fans should vote for his group above all other boy bands in our bracket, he went straight for the very thing that sets the Jonas Brothers and their main competition, Hanson, apart. “I think that we are a good one to vote for because we play our own instruments,” Nick said. “It’s a rare thing for a boy band. … I don’t know of a whole lot of boy bands that do that.” Is that good enough to keep them in the competition? In an interview with EW, Lone Ranger co-star Johnny Depp explained the startling new look of his character, Tonto, who wears feathers and black and white face paint but, more importantly, has a bird sitting on his head . Inspiration came from a painting entitled “I Am Crow” by artist Kirby Sattler: “It seemed to me like you could almost see the separate sections of the individual, if you know what I mean,” Depp said. Nobody knows what this means, but sure. WHAT ABOUT THE BIRD?? “It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior’s head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top. I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. My name is Asia and this is my Bieber experience. The day it happened, Saturday April 21st, 2012 and I was with my friend Jade (@LABeliebs). We were originally planning on going to a concert that day, but we decided to skip it so we could go to the Boyfriend video shoot and try to see Justin. We arrived there at 9 A.M. and we were the only fans there at the time. We walked around the perimeter of the shoot for a while and came across Justin’s sexy matte black Range Rover . It actually said ‘Stealth Rover’ on the front. Swag. We saw this guy and he looked like he was calling the paps or something. We tried to talk him out of it but he refused. Then we walked away. We noticed that everyone was on the roof of a parking structure and that is where they were shooting the video. I’m guessing they were re-shooting the whole entire thing. Luckily, the parking garage that we had parked our car in was right across from the one Justin was at. We went up to the roof and there were a bunch of cars filled with paps, but we were the only fans there so we stood on the roof and watched. When we saw Justin shooting some scenes that looked like a burnout in his gold spray painted supras and blue jean vest, we almost passed out. After he was done shooting that scene he was walking our way with Fredo and Kenny to go back downstairs. He smiled at us at first when we yelled all of their names, and then smiled bigger when we yelled, “WE’RE BELIEBERS, NOT PAPARAZZI” lol. Luckily the paps got a picture of him smiling at us. (x) Then we saw Ry Good go down the stairs too, we said, “HI RYAN” and he said “HELLOOOO” in a really weird voice. We decided to go back downstairs to see if we could catch a closer look at Justin, and we ended up running into Vanessa (@ThatLadyV) and we had a short conversation. I complimented her on her sick sunglasses that apparently Justin bought for her. We also met two super nice Beliebers named Susana and Angelina. After that we went back up to the roof but there were more paps this time and more fans too. Selena had also arrived on set as well. At that time, Justin was angry. He got into his Range Rover and then that was when Scooter intervened. He yelled across the way, Justin said he wasn’t going to leave his car unless all of us left because he didn’t want to tape the shoot if the paps were just going to videotape the whole thing. The paps were being stubborn and said, “We’ll leave if you give us one more shot” and at that point I was yelling at them, telling them they need to leave. They had been there since 6 A.M. and they had enough shots already. They wouldn’t listen so Justin came out of the car and gave them the last few shots. My friends and I were screaming, “WE LOVE YOU JUSTIN” and he said, “Thank You!” and waved. We went down to the floor beneath the roof and sat in the car. We met this really nice lady who works on set named Patsy, and she thanked us for being respectful, so she helped us work our way around and still get to see the shoot. About a few hours passed and we got back downstairs and waited some more. Then we went BACK up. (It was a lot of back and forth) and we were watching again on the roof. It was just us and the security. They agreed to let us stay on the roof as long as we ducked down when they were shooting certain scenes. Things died down a bit and none of us were paying attention to Justin, we were all flirting with this really hot extra on set, we called him ‘Yellow Shirt’. He got into the elevator and it was see through, so I kept waving and he was crouched down waving back like a cutie. After that, we went back downstairs by his trailer and he actually came out. He ran towards us and these stupid people were bum-brushing him, but he promised to come back and take pictures with us when he was done shooting. At that time, I couldn’t even fangirl because I was just speechless. A few moments later Scooter came over , and I went up to him and said hi. Then he left after taking pictures with my friends. A little while passed and Fredo walks by. We call his name and he tells us to go up to him. Let me just say, he is so cute, I’d f@#$s with it LOL. Naw, he was super nice and I gave him a hug and we took a picture. I told him I created a cupcake after him and he said, “See this is why I love you, can I get one of those?” and I said I would DM him about it. That was that, and he left. Now we waited for another 2 hours until Justin was done. In the mean time, this annoying family who claims they were Beliebers were just being so obnoxious. In fact, they didn’t even know who Alfredo or Scooter were, and they said that Justin’s new album is going to be called ‘Never Say Never’ -dead- Now the time had come. We could hear the directors say, “And that’s a RAP” and a bunch of cheering flew off of the roof in a loud roar. His Range Rover emerged from the garage, and out of the car he came. The stupid family and a bunch of other fans totally rushed Justin, and it was chaotic. Jade and I stood behind patiently waiting our turn, trying to be respectful of Justin’s space and safety. Then we realized that he was going back to his car. He said he had to go, and right then and there my whole entire world just about shattered into pieces . We waited for 12 hours, through 100 degree weather and I was sick too. We were the first fans there, and the last fans there. All of that waiting and we weren’t going to meet him. I broke down. It hit me so hard. I was sobbing and the security guards who we had been with all day long were actually really surprised that I had missed my chance with Justin. It was the worst feeling in the whole entire universe and I wouldn’t wish it upon anybody. Then my amazing friends yelled to Scooter that I was crying. He saw she was talking about me, and I guess that did it. He came over and grab my hand and pulled me to Justin’s car. I was still sobbing though. Scooter knocked on his window, and Justin rolled it down. I waved to Selena too but she just kinda smiled an awkward smile. Oh well. Scooter said to Justin, “This is one of the best Twitter follower accounts in the whole world. I know who she is, she helps us every single day, she’s the one who puts together video campaigns for you all around the world.” Justin grabbed my hand and looked straight into my eyes. I just melted right then and there. He literally is, (no exaggeration) PERFECT. He doesn’t look real, he looks like a life size doll. Like he would break if I touched him. Almost porcelain. I know it sounds cheesy, but he had the most sympathetic look in his eyes and it felt like he was staring into my soul. Justin asked for my name and Twitter. He told me he had definitely seen that. Scooter then said, “Her username used to be iAmBieberConda.” I was blushing like crazy, I wanted to just die. He rubbed my hand and then asked if I wanted to take a picture. Of course I said yes. I was still somewhat crying. He sat up and stuck his arm out of the window and put it around my shoulder. After the picture I took his hand again, and said, “Thank you so much”. He said, “You’re welcome, have a nice night” and then all of these fans swarmed in. I ducked out of the crowd and went over to Scooter and gave him a hug for making my dream come true. Of course, after that I went over to my friends and started bawling. It was the best experience of my life. I wouldn’t have wanted to meet him any other way. When I got home, he then tweeted me saying “ @DazzlingJustin nice meeting u. dont cry. appreciate u”. I broke down again because I couldn’t believe it. Justin Drew Bieber, my idol for almost four years, asked me for my Twitter and took the time out of his day to say that to me. No other artist has a heart as genuine as his. By Kara Warner Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford in “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” Photo: Lionsgate Before MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview Week wraps up, let’s take a look at the very star-studded ensemble romantic comedy “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” Although inspired by the very popular nonfiction book of the same name, the movie revolves around five very different couples and the hilarious highs and lows they experience during pregnancy. The cast includes the following actors as couples: Elizabeth Banks and Ben Falcone, Dennis Quaid and Brooklyn Decker (the joke about their age gap is in the film, don’t worry!), Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford, Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison, and Jennifer Lopez and Rodrigo Santoro. Plus a lot of entertaining banter from the “dudes club,” consisting of funnymen Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon, Rob Heubel, Amir Talai and Joe Manganiello. And no matter what you might think about romantic comedies or movies about pregnancy, director Kirk Jones (“Everybody’s Fine,” “Nanny McPhee”) promised us there’s something for everyone in this film. “We were really keen that the film should tell the story of guys and girls going through pregnancy,” Jones told MTV News recently. “That’s what really interested me in the original script. We hoped that the final film would appeal to guys, and what’s really encouraging is that I think our final preview scored almost as high with guys as it did with girls,” he revealed. “What’s great about the guys in the movie, the ‘dudes club’ headed by Chris Rock, Tom Lennon, Rob Huebel, Rodrigo Santoro and Joe Manganiello, those guys talk openly and honestly about their worries and their fears and their experience of pregnancy.” Which, according to Jones, included the good, bad and ugly when it comes to physical and emotional changes involved with being pregnant. “If someone throws up, they’re not throwing up because it’s a cheap gag in the movie,” he said. “They’re throwing up because that’s the reality of being pregnant.” In looking at the massive cast Jones had to work with , one might assume scheduling his actors was the most difficult aspect of the shoot, but that award goes to baby wrangling, not people wrangling. “For every child we cast, we cast twins. If I was shooting three scenes, the first scene with a 3-month-old, the next a 6-month-old, the next a 9-month-old, that means I had seven sets of [each set of twins],” Jones recalled. “You do the math. I think one day we had 32 babies in 100-degree heat being kept cool with air conditioning.” Speaking of the heat, Jones and his cast and crew braved shooting in Atlanta in the middle of the summer. “I think our hottest day was 117 degrees. It was difficult for these very gorgeous women to look their best in those conditions, but every one of them were great.” Manganiello of “True Blood” fame got off a little easier than the rest of the cast because his character appears shirtless in a lot of the film, which, according to Jones, proved to be a distraction. “Joe was great. He’s got a phenomenal body and I say that as a straight guy,” he admitted. “I looked around on set and the guys were just obsessed with staring at his chest. I don’t know he does it. It looks like someone sculpted his chest.” “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” opens everywhere May 18.
