By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Chris Hyde/Getty Images Expect lots of drama, plenty of laughs and possibly even a few superheroes in the building when Samuel L. Jackson hosts the 2012 BET Awards on July 1, live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. On Tuesday (May 22), BET announced the nominees for their 2012 awards show and even confirmed performances by Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj (though there was no official word on whether the Hulk will attend). BET president Stephen Hill held a press conference in New York City on Tuesday, and with the help of Big Sean , DJ Khaled, A$AP Rocky, Diggy, Mindless Behavior and Melanie Fiona, he spilled the beans about the big show. Samuel L. wasn’t in attendance, but “The Avengers” star sent a pre-taped message promising that the show will be “too big to miss.” Kanye West leads the nominations with seven, including two Video of the Year nods for the Throne’s “N—as in Paris” and “Otis.” Beyonc

Dancing With the Stars Recap: A Fantastic Finals

Heading into Monday’s performance finale on Season 14 of Dancing With the Stars, it was anybody’s game . Heading into the final results show, it still is! The most evenly-matched final three in history lived up to that billing, finishing within a single point of each other after six great routines. Let’s revisit them all, shall we? William Levy & Cheryl Burke – Cha Cha Cha (DWTS Week 10) Head judge Len Goodman said that William Levy’s show-opening cha-cha was as good as any he has seen in 14 seasons. He got a 30 for it. Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas – Paso Doble (DWTS Week 10) There was no less love for Katherine Jenkins’ paso doble, which Len said was “full of tasty tidbits to tickle your taste buds.” Crickets . 30. Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd – Argentine Tango (DWTS Week 10) Donald Driver fell short – by a single point – in merely scraping together 10s from Bruno and Carrie Ann Inaba for his Argentine tango. William Levy & Cheryl Burke – Freestyle (DWTS Week 10) In the lift-happy freestyle round, William and Cheryl Burke’s tango / samba / salsa whatever earned them a 29 for a total of 59 Monday. Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas – Freestyle (DWTS Week 10) Mark Ballas hit the jackpot with the swing routine he crafted for Katherine, sweeping her (and the judges) off their feet for another 30. Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd – Freestyle (DWTS Week 10) Peta Murgatroyd literally bled for her freestyle. She got knocked in the face by her beefy partner during rehearsal, but rallied for a 29. The scores after Monday’s performance finale, which will account for half the overall scores this evening along with America’s votes: Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas (30, 30): 60 William Levy & Cheryl Burke (30, 29): 59 Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd (29, 30): 59 Yup. Usher Slams Tameka Foster in Court, Sheds Tears

Usher took the stand yesterday in the custody trial brought on by ex-wife Tameka Foster – who has accused the singer of drug use and demanded the use of his mansion – and broke down in tears. Usher quoted his ex as threatening: “I’m gonna kick your ass. Bitch get out of the car. How dare you bring this woman into my subdivision in my house?” and added: “She continued to spit. At this point she pulled the door open, tried to swing at her.” Foster herself has admitted under oath that she told Usher “I will f-ck you up,” while Usher said here Tameka hit him and threw a plate of food at his car while he and his unnamed girlfriend drove away. Later in his testimony, meanwhile, Usher responded to photos of him partying in Europe and allegations by Foster’s attorney that he’s an unfit parent by breaking down in tears. TMZ sources say Usher admitted to marijuana use, while an objection was made to the topic of ecstasy – and the artist didn’t give a clear response to whether he had ever been with his children while under the influence. The custody trial continues today.

Billboard Music Awards Belong To Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift

Show also features tributes to Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, MCA and Robin Gibb. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber performs at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Sunday night’s (May 20) Billboard Music Awards were a bittersweet affair, balancing the promise of decades of entertainment from a new generation of record-smashing young artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift with fond memories of a number of recently departed musical icons. In a three-hour show heavy on performances, chart staples LMFAO helped kicked the show off with a typically hyped performance of their inescapable party anthems that featured a cabbage-patching teddy bear and zebra and more animal prints than a Flintstones family reunion. Justin Bieber was the night’s first winner, taking the Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence. The singer swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said, “I just want to say how much of a blessing it’s been … the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody. … I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position.” Co-host Julie Bowen took a moment out of the program early on to pay tribute to late Bee Gees member Robin Gibb , who died earlier in the day Sunday after a long battle with cancer. The night also featured a touching tribute to recently passed disco queen Donna Summer by Natasha Bedingfield and a segment devoted to music legend Whitney Houston with a medley of her indelible hits performed by John Legend and Jordin Sparks. Daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the Billboard Millennium Award on behalf of her late mother. “I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all,” she said. “Not just when it was good, but when it was bad too … thank you so much for showing that much love, because she deserved it.” Katy Perry was handed the Spotlight Award for tying the record set by Michael Jackson of five #1 hits from the same album, for her handful of smashes from Teenage Dream. Dressed in a floor-length sparkling silver gown, her hair a muted dark purple, Perry said she was “incredibly honored” to be in the same category as someone like Jackson. “Most of all, of course, I always say that the people have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering, gorgeous community of fans out there,” she added to wild applause, while finding a spare few seconds to plug her upcoming 3-D concert film, “Part of Me.” Oh, and she said she couldn’t wait to do shots later that night with her 91-year-old granny, who was in the audience. The ladies had a great night, as Taylor Swift was honored with the Billboard Woman of the Year award, acknowledging her stadium full of impressive credits, including a place as the only woman in music history to score three #1 albums in a row, each of which has sold more than 5 million copies. Swift, 22, dressed in a flowing red evening gown and ever gracious, thanked her legions of fans, saying, “I just love you so much, I’m just so humbled and honored by this.” As Miley Cyrus noted, you’re only new to the game once, so it was fitting that red-hot rapper Wiz Khalifa best the competition for the Top New Artist trophy. “I’m up here shakin’, man,” the rapper admitted as he thanked his whole crew and label family, as well as his “beautiful fianc

Donna Summer’s Music The Go-To For TV And Movies

‘Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand,’ expert tells MTV News about late singer’s tunes being all over pop culture. By Kara Warner Donna Summer Photo: Fotos International/Getty Images The news of Donna Summer’s untimely passing Thursday (May 17) weighed heavily on all those who knew and loved the undisputed Queen of Disco. Despite the fact that “disco fever” lived and basically died in the 1970s, Summer’s music continues to live on. Her many unforgettable hits like “Last Dance,” “Love to Love You Baby” and “She Works Hard for the Money” transcended genres and left an indelible mark on all pop culture , from the music charts to television and film. A quick perusal of Summer’s eclectic IMDb page demonstrates the fact that her music is the go-to for filmmakers and show-runners looking for that perfect dance number in their TV show or film. “Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand either to convey disco or those songs lend themselves to montage-type stuff,” Entertainment Weekly music editor Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. ” ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ is always used for when a lady is going about her business. Songs like ‘Love to Love You’ and ‘I Feel Love’ are almost like a ‘bow-chicka-bow-wow,’ in that they always convey sex, whether that’s in an ironic way or in a real way.” Two relatively recent comedic examples include the memorable love scene/orgy in “Zoolander” set to “Love to Love You” and Cameron Diaz’s group dance number in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” set to “Last Dance.” “A lot of her songs were almost cinematic in the way that their lyrics and music were arranged,” Greenblatt said of the repeated use of Summer’s songs for television and film. “A lot of [scenes] can go out or end on ‘Last Dance.’ ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ is all about when a woman has to go out and earn in a movie; it’s the perfect music cue. And when someone is having a threesome with a Sherpa [like in ‘Zoolander’], her music was so great for that.” Greenblatt went on to say that Summer’s songs will continue to provide the soundtrack to key moments in our lives. For photos of Donna Summer through the years, click here. “There was a time when disco was really derided and dismissed, but it would be really hard to find a person over 25 or 30 who doesn’t have these songs as part of their DNA. Whether or not you liked disco, it’s really hard to deny her voice and her talent,” she said. “Her music stands out because she was such a great singer and because a lot of her songs were about emotions too. You can really feel in her voice that she means it. “Also, how many artists have music that has been featured on ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Parks and Recreation’ and in ‘Frost/Nixon’?” Greenblatt added. “For whatever reason, comedians love to use her too. There’s the campy tributes but also a sincere love for her. And anytime anyone takes their clothes off [in TV or film], someone has got to play ‘Hot Stuff.’ ” Share your condolences for Donna Summer’s friends, family and fans in the comments or on Facebook . Usher Hopes ‘Scream’ Is ‘Life Changing’

‘I always think about that song that will be able to let you out of that slump,’ Looking 4 Myself singer says on ‘MTV First.’ By John Mitchell Usher at “MTV First” Photo: MTV News It’s not often that fans get to hit the club to party with the artist behind the latest dance hit, but that’s exactly what happened for the audience at the interactive off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta” when Usher arrived for a unique first-listen experience for his new album, Looking 4 Myself . As the R&B megastar’s latest hit, the beat-driven Max Martin-produced “Scream,” pounded through the theater, Usher flew into the audience for a rave-like dance party that had everyone in the place moving. He’s used to that sort of reaction by now, having released some of the biggest club hits of the past 15 years, including “OMG,” “Yeah,” “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “My Way.” Usher consistently makes dance records that define a night, and it’s important to the singer that his upbeat songs reach people on as deep a level as his more personal ballads. “If I’m gonna move you, I want to move you. I hope that it could be something that could be life changing,” the soulful signer said during “MTV First: Usher.” “You may be going through something real crazy, who knows, and just need to get out and just enjoy yourself. So I always think about the club, I always think about that song that will be able to let you out of that slump, if you’re in it.” But “Scream” isn’t just for those looking for escape. The track can work on many levels, according to the singer: “If you’re just ready to have a good time, or if you’re working out and you just need that little motivation to push you over the edge, there you go.” Related Videos MTV First: Usher Related Artists Usher

Cannes Jury Talks ‘Taboo,’ Women Filmmakers and Flirting With Oscar

One of the funniest moments during a “meet the jury session” Wednesday afternoon in Cannes came toward the end of a press conference. The annual first-day Q&A has long been a peculiar dance, with jurors giving vague answers about being happy to be on the jury and how they’ll pursue the next 11 days viewing all of the competition entries with an open mind. And this year was pretty much no exception: Joined by fellow jurors Ewan McGregor, Diane Kruger, Jean Paul Gaultier, Raoul Peck, Andrea Arnold, Hiam Abbass and Emmanuelle Devos, jury president Nanni Moretti — whose own film Habemus Papam ( We Have a Pope ) screened in competition here last year — recalled a wall of silence surrounding the jury when he last served many years back. “When I was here 15 years ago, we weren’t allowed to speak out,” Moretti said, comparing how times have changed for the Cannes Film Festival. “Now we have this press conference and another one after [the winners are chosen].” He likened the former wall of silence to a Vatican conclave, the secret meeting of the Catholic Church’s cardinals who select a pope, a drama that figured so prominently in his film that debuted here one year ago. “Speaking to the press used to be taboo,” he said. “But now only conclaves must be silent.” But the fact of the matter is they do speak, both today and after the awards are announced (but supposedly not in between). This year, the dearth of female directors in the official competition has again caused controversy . Last year, four women directors screened in competition (there were none in 2010 ), but this year’s lineup is again dominated by the males. “I’d absolutely hate if one of my films got selected to be in Cannes only because I’m a woman,” Arnold said when asked about the lack of female representation among the films she’ll judge this year. “I’d only want it selected if it were worthy to be here. But I also think Cannes is a pocket of the world and the fact of the matter is, there are a lack of female directors out there.” Arnold won two jury prizes in Cannes for Red Road (2006) and Fish Tank (2009). Beyond controversy, there is the ever present discussion of the Oscars, something that typically figures in with Toronto in the early fall. But last year, Cannes debuted three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture — Midnight in Paris , The Tree of Life and the eventual Oscar-winner The Artist . Will next year’s Oscar race be influenced again by what happens in Cannes — two events separated by nine months? “I think it’s a completely different ballgame between the Oscars and Cannes,” McGregor noted, perhaps dodging the question a bit. “But this is a great springboard for new filmmakers to be noticed.” “On the one hand it’s ridiculous to say one film is better than another,” said juror Alexander Payne about picking winners, himself an Oscar winner this year for The Descendants . “The selection of the entire slate of films brings more attention than the actual prizes.” Read all of Movieline’s Cannes 2012 coverage here .

10 Dope Rap Acts Who Could Not Top Their Freshman Albums

It’s hard to top a classic album, even if that classic was the artist’s debut. It almost seems like a given that, as time progresses, an artist would get better at their craft and be able to put out better and better material. However, for whatever reason, that is rarely the case… Continue Continue reading
