J. Reid Talks Misconceptions About Nicki Minaj & Life Before And After Producing ‘Chun-Li’

Whether you love or hate her, Nicki Minaj is one of the hottest topics in the country right now. From her beef with Travis Scott and Cardi B to her fourth studio album, Queen , the “Barbie Dreams” rapper has had the nation talking for months . Yesterday, we sat down with J. Reid , the upcoming producer who delivered five of Nicki’s hottest tracks this year . Queen cuts “Chun-Li,” “Rich Sex” featuring Lil Wayne, “Thought I Knew You” featuring The Weeknd, and “Ganja Burns” were all produced by Reid, not to mention “Barbie Tingz,” which Nicki placed on the exclusive Target edition of her album. The Atlanta native, who’s also worked with Lloyd and Rick Ross, talks life before linking with Ms. Minaj, as well as what he says are misconceptions about the NY superstar. He also dishes on his work with the ever so talented Bahja Rodriguez (formerly of OMG Girlz) and more. On finding out Nicki Minaj wanted to work with him “Really, I’ma be honest, I didn’t even believe it,” he began. “Brinx [Billions] from NY was like ‘Yo she loves the song! Send me the beat for the song!” Brinx was referring to what would later become “Rich Sex.” “I was timid,” Reid said of Brinx reaching out. “I was like ‘hm, I don’t know…I know he knows Nicki Minaj but I don’t know.’ I just had to trust him and I finally sent the beat and I went down there and met her in, like, December of last year. It was incredible.” Touching on the fact that he can now add The Weeknd to his long list of collaborations, thanks to his work with Minaj, Reid said “That’s the beauty of it because I didn’t walk into it expecting anything. I was just working…head down, working.” On what life was like before working on Queen “Life before all of this happened…I was working with a lot of independent artists. I was recording sessions to make bread. I was doing a lot of engineering work…mixing, mastering. I was making beats, of course, but it wasn’t a consistent thing where I was working with a whole bunch of bigger artists. I took time to just focus on indie artists and indie music because now a days, the indies are winning. Those are the artists getting the most notoriety and coming up fast because they don’t have no control over them. So that’s what I was doing. I actually had Lloyd and Lil Wayne on a record… “Holding,” off of Lloyd’s new album. I was working on Rick Ross, Lloyd, and Wayne right before all this Nicki stuff popped off, so things were heating up.” On producing Bahja Rodriguez’s next album and her post-OMG Girlz sound “I say her sound is pop and R&B but with a trap edge—that’s the kind of producer I am. I’m a down south producer, so I’m bringing a lot of different elements together to create her sound. But Bahja can do anything—she has one of those voices that’s effortless. She does all kinds of music…ballads, the energetic trap songs,” he said of the singer, adding that she really can’t be boxed into any one specific genre. On other projects he’s currently working on “Working on Sevyn Streeter. [YFN] Lucci, got some stuff with him. I got a record with Lil Baby that just kind of came out. I got a lot of stuff in the works. Commercials, I’m trying to do a couple video game placements, movies…” On artists he’s still hoping to work with “One of my hometown favorites, Future. He has a video on Instagram and he’s listening to ‘Rich Sex’ getting on a private jet, which is crazy, like ‘Yea he’s listening to my song!’ He’s vibing to it,” Reid said with excitement. “So, in the near future I’m sure we can probably get a record out.” Later, he mentions Pharrell as another artist he’d love to work with. On Nicki Minaj not being what tabloids make her out to be Referring to people believing everything the media says about Minaj, he told us “You have to careful what you regurgitate because at the end of the day, she put me in this position.” Reid says Nicki has had trust in him and allowed him to simply do his thing, adding “I look at it and laugh. She’s nothing like what they say…she’s a positive person, she’s about her business, and she’s worried about the stuff that she got going on.”

Dolores O’Riordan Death Ruled "Tragic Accident" by Coroner

We now know why Dolores O’Riordan passed away in January. The former Cranberries lead singer was shockingly found dead in London several months ago, leaving this world at the relatively young age of 46. There were various theories as to what transpired at the time, with many outlets claiming O’Riordan’s death was related to her history of substance abuse. One irresponsible tabloid even alleged she had overdosed on sleeping pills . Now, however, per The BBC, coroner Shirley Radcliffe has completed her report and determined that the artist died due to a “tragic accident.” She drowned in her hotel bathtub after drinking a lot of alcohol. According to this doctor and her findings, there were no signs of injury or self-harm found during the post-mortem examination. The BBC goes on to say that authorities discovered a bottle of champagne and five miniature bottles in O’Riordan’s hotel room, in addition to “containers of prescription drugs with a quantity of tablets in each container.” Moreover, toxicology tests revealed that O’Riordan’s blood contained “therapeutic” amounts of medication but 330mg of alcohol per 100mls of blood. This equates to “four times over the 80mg legal limit for driving.” In simpler terms: the singer was very, very drunk. But the official report does not state she intentionally drowned herself. Following the release of these findings, The Cranberries released a statement that reads: Today we continue to struggle to come to terms with what happened. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dolores’ children and her family and our thoughts are with them today. Dolores will live on eternally in her music. To see how much of a positive impact she had on people’s lives has been a source of great comfort for us. We’d like to say thank you to all of our fans for the outpouring of messages and their continues support during this very difficult time. O’Riordan joined The Cranberries when she was only 18 years old. She quickly became an integral part of the band both for her voice and also her songwriting. The group, whose top hits include “Linger,” “Dreams,” and “Zombie,” sold over 40 million albums worldwide and had multiple Billboard Top 200 hits throughout the 1990s. O’Riordan released her first solo album in 2003. Six years later, the group got back together and released an acoustic album as recently as 2017. O’Riordan’s death came as a stunning tragedy to her friends and fans. The remaining band members have repeatedly paid tribute to O’Riordan on Twitter, saying shortly after she died: We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today. Elsewhere, The Cranberries will releasing a new album, which O’Riordan had been working on with them before her death. It will contain previously unreleased material by the band, as well as other bonus material from the era and it will be released in October.  O’Riordan leaves behind three kids – Taylor, Mollie and Dakota – as well as her boyfriend, Olé Koretsky. May she rest in peace. View Slideshow: 32 Musicians Who Died Too Young

Demi Lovato: Why is She STILL in the Hospital?

We have an update on the condition of Demi Lovato. But it isn’t exactly a positive one. Earlier in the week, multiple outlets reported that Lovato had agreed to check into a treatment facility at an undisclosed location, although the rehab stint would presumably take her far away from Los Angeles. This was viewed as a favorable sign because it meant the singer was acknowledging that she is in dire need of professional assistance. However, here we are… six days after Demi tragically overdosed on some unknown substance and ended up in the hospital. And she’s still there. She’s still under the supervision of doctors. Why is this the case? According to TMZ, Lovato is very sick . She is running a high fever and has severe nausea and is simply not in any kind of shape to be moved at the moment. Just how dire is the situation? Lovato is expected to survive, that’s for certain, but physicians are unable to provide a time table for when she might leave as a patient, considering her painful physical state. Will this diminished state at least hammer home the point to Lovato that she needs to check into rehab? Maybe not. “We just don’t know where her head is at,” an insider tells TMZ. As previously detailed, Lovato was found unconscious last Tuesday morning. An assistant called 911 and, when paramedics arrived a short while later, they had to use Narcan, an antidote to an opioid overdose, in order to revive the artist. This approach worked, of course, and the EMTs had no choice. However, the use of such an antidote, along with the overdose itself and the question of how long Demi’s brain went without oxygen, could mean that Lovato will suffer long-term physical consequences. We just need to wait, see and pray for the time being. Meanwhile, Lovato’s friends are speaking out for the first time since her overdose last week. Previously, close pal Dani Vitale asked trolls to please stop blaming her for what transpired, something folks out there were actually doing simply because Demi was out celebrating Demi’s birthday the night before she was discovered in her bed at home. “I care about Demi just like all of you do,” Vitale wrote, expounding in a lot more detail; “I have not said anything about this situation now because her recovery has been of the most importance. I was not with Demi when the incident happened, but I am with her now, and will continue to be because she means to the world to me just as she does to all of you. “Like all of you, I have nothing but love in my heart for her. “There is no need for any negativity towards the ones who care about Demi at this time. There is too much of it in this world as it is.” Then, on Sunday, actpr Matthew Scott Montgomery, broke his silence on Lovato’s relapse via Instagram Stories Sunday. This is what he wrote: It’s been an incredibly difficult few days, and this year has easily been the hardest I’ve ever experienced. I couldn’t figure out what felt weirder – posting or not posting about this. I will miss hearing my best friend’s laugh, maybe my favorite sound in the world, in the audience for these final shows as she continues to recover. Finally, Sirah, a rapper and member of Lovato’s inner circle, said on Instagram Stories that fans need to band together and stop pointing fingers. Lovato just needs out support. “I hope everyone will focus their energy into more productive things because God knows we need good energy being put forth into the world during a time like this,” she wrote, concluding: “If I return back to the internet in the next few days as I try to continue on with my life, I hope that you guys will be able to understand that no matter what has happened this week it is important for me to live my life so I don’t also end up in the hospital [with] a mental breakdown.” Amen.
