Wiz Khalifa Calls VMA Nomination ‘A Good Sign’

‘Black and Yellow’ rapper says Best New Artist nominees ‘are all people who have their own movements.’ By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Raymond Boyd/ Michael Ochs Archives/ Getty Images Before Wiz Khalifa saw his career take flight, his hometown of Pittsburgh stood as a relative unknown on the hip-hop map. The Taylor Gang general’s breakout hit, “Black and Yellow,” changed that, and now Wiz is being rewarded with a Best New Artist nomination at the 2011 MTV VMAs . “It’s my first video, so I wanted to make it like that classic. You can’t do a first video over again,” Wiz said of the concept behind his popular video, which has raked in over 89 million views on YouTube. “When I think about stuff like that, I thought about Snoop’s [appearance in Dr. Dre’s] ‘[Nuthin’ but a] G Thang’ — like a real hometown-vibe video, things that really, really show the artist in their element. I figured if I went that way with it, then I couldn’t really lose.” Wiz is proud that he is able to rep for his town and said that being in the conversation with other big-time rappers like Lil Wayne and Drake helps him provide inspiration for Pittsburgh’s up-and-coming talents. “It’s good morale for Pittsburgh, because we never got that much love,” he said. “All of our artists have been known on a certain scene or a certain radar, but to be put up there with the greatest rappers and to have their own is really, really big for the city.” The Best New Artist competition is tough, however: Wiz is up against his tourmate, Big Sean (“My Last”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”), Tyler, the Creator (“Yonkers”) and indie-pop band Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”). “I think it’s really good competition, and it’s just a good sign of the new wave of how an artist can come up and get recognition these days,” Khalifa said. “Big Sean, I know his situation, how he came from nothing. Kreayshawn, she built her buzz similar with the Internet, and Tyler as well. These are all people who have their own movements.” While each Best New Artist nominee is different in their own right, Wiz finds a common thread that binds them: “All of us, we’re really just living our dreams and getting nominated for it, so it’s excellent.” You can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist, by visiting vma.mtv.com or m.mtv.com on your mobile phone. In the next installment of Vibe’s “Full Clip” series MC/producer Q-tip discusses his entire catalog of hip-hop hits for A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Nas , Biggie and more. The Queens, NY native has been making headlines for his dispute with actor/director Michael Rappaport over his group’s documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life . With a focus on the group’s internal strife Tip told the mag that he hopes the next hip-hop documentary “focuses on the culture.” Nevertheless, Tip seemed to have genuine fun reminiscing about the methods and occasional madness behind his music. In one portion he describes making “One Love” for a teenaged Nasir Jones: “I specifically produced ‘One Love’ for Nas . I knew he was special even before Illmatic. He was the MC who could capture the picture of everything he was rhyming about. His approach was incredible…he had the perfect cadence. You related to Nas because you felt he was from around the way. And people forget that Nas was a prodigy…he was younger than all of us at that time. So I told him, ‘Yo, I’m going to give you some spooky sounding shit for your album.’ And Nas was like, ‘Yeah, I need that to capture the feel of what I’m saying. I need that crazy, mysterious shit.’ So that was the vibe of ‘One Love.’ I knew that it was going to be a classic track. I just knew it. It’s one of those special songs that when you work on it you know what it’s going to be.” READ THE FULL CLIP AT VIBE MAGAZINE RELATED POSTS: FACT OF THE DAY: Rah Digga Was Originally Q-Tip’s Artist Consequence On Kanye West Beef: “I Wasn’t Trying To Air Anybody Out” [EXLCUSIVE VIDEO] Q-Tip & Phife Talk Sophomore Jinx In Clip From New Documentary [VIDEO]

Justin Bieber Defends Kanye West: Not an A-Hole!

Kanye West isn’t exactly known as the most magnanimous man in Hollywood. His Tweets are epic , his concert rants controversial. But Justin Bieber has worked with the rapper and said of Kanye in a recent interview with hip-hop magazine XXL : “He’s not really an asshole like everyone makes him out to be.” Whoa. Dropping the A-bomb! Justin must be serious. Justin Bieber & Kanye West – Runaway Love Granted, Bieber admits, West “can do bad things” and, yes, he can “make bad decisions.” Overall, though? “He’s really generally a good guy,” Bieber said of the artist with whom he collaborated on “Runaway Love.” Give the Biebs credit – or scoff at his decisions – for being unafraid to align himself with stars who don’t fit his squeaky clean image. There’s Kanye here. And then there’s the duet he produced with Chris Brown .

Bruce Beresford-Redman to Stand Trial in Mexico

Bruce Beresford-Redman, the former TV producer accused of killing his wife outside a resort in Cancun, has been ordered back to Quintana Roo, Mexico to stand trial on charges of aggravated homicide. The incident took place in November, when the body of Bruce’s wife, Monica, washed up in a sewer system near the hotel where she had been staying with her family. The cause of death was asphyxiation. Bruce’s attorneys claimed the police were too quick to charge their client and lacked any physical evidence. But United States prosecutors say fellow guests heard screams emanating from the couple’s room and that detectives subsequent discovered blood spatter in the bathroom and in other areas of the room. The ex- Survivor producer has been behind bars in Los Angeles, but will soon be moved to Mexico. He faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.

Nicki Minaj Calls Cops on Alleged Hotel Attacker

Nicki Minaj says she was struck in the face by a male acquaintance yesterday. But the artist does not want to press any charges. Here’s what went down: Minaj and an unidentified man were allegedly arguing poolside at the Palomar Hotel in Dallas. As the verbal sparring intensified, the man left for his hotel room, the singer told an employee to call the cops and then she followed the man back inside. Once there, she says he hit her in the lower lip. When the police arrived, Minaj explained what happened but said she did not want to press charges. She added that the opponent was not her boyfriend. Nicki faced a very different kind of tragedy earlier this month: her cousin was murdered . [Photo: WENN.com]

Miguel Apologizes To Lloyd’s Hair! [VIDEO]

See the original post here:

As we previously reported, Decatur’s own Lloyd recently cut his hair again and tattooed his head with a guns and roses design. Which Artist Got Guns & Roses Tattooed On The Back Of Their Head? [VIDEO] Some time after Lloyd debuted his new ‘do on 106 & Park, singer Miguel tweeted about the haircut, which led to a back-and-forth exchange between the singers on Twitter. The feud between Miguel and Lloyd about their hair came to a head when the two were to perform on the same stage at Cleveland’s Summer Jam this week, thrown by our affiliate station, Z 107.9. Z 107.9′s backstage snitches were on it when Miguel burst into Lloyd’s dressing room making light of his tweet about Lloyd’s haircut. Our snitch tells us the exclusive… “Miguel bursts into the dressing room while singing ‘The Wayans Brothers’ sitcom song… ‘We’re brother, we’re happy and we’re singing and we’re colored…’ While he laughs in greeting him. Lloyd was not laughing and immediately shut it down by asking him why he would tweet such a thing. The tension was definitely thick and the two try to hash it out but at the end… it doesn’t seem like the two will want to share a stage again. You tell me what you think because the whole conversation was accidentally recorded. In the recording you will hear at the start Miguel singing and greeting Lloyd. Listen below! Lloyd: Why? Why would you even say that, though? Miguel: I’m sorry, you’re right. I shouldn’t have said it on twitter… there’s no beef… It was the wrong thing to say at the wrong time. Lloyd: But the fact is that I was not trying to imitate you… I just shaved my head for my tattoo. I felt like it was disrespectful… cheap and distasteful. …this really ain’t my thing but for you to say that and bring all that kind of energy to me… My album just released so why am I answering questions about Miguel when I should be talking about my album that I spent two years working on? Check out the video from their performances below. Do you think the beef effected their stage game?
