Black Thought Eager To Perform With Nas At Roots Picnic

See the original post:

The Roots will kick off Philadelphia’s annual celebration of Black Music Month with their fourth-annual Roots Picnic on June 4th. The event will take place at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in the band’s hometown of Philadelphia, PA.  Black Thought, lead MC of The Roots spoke to TheUrbandaily.com about one of the Summers best shows.  “The Roots Picnic every year is unique,” he says of the eclectic mix of performers.  “[This year] we have the return of Esperanza Spalding , [who is] returning in her Grammy New Artist of the Year glory.” On the other end of the spectrum Black Thought also anticipates that fellow Pennsylvanian Wiz Khalifa , who is sure to give an energetic performance of his  Rolling Papers debut.  Other musicians and bands, such as Sweden’s Little Dragon and Man Man of Philly, will entertain the festival’s audience.  However, there will also be plenty for the hip-hop purist. “There’s always an element of The Roots Picnic that’s tailored to our [musical] tastes as The Roots,” says Thought. “And for me, that part of the festival is going to be doing the set with Nas. I look forward to that.” His Grammy award-winning band will back Nas during his performance at the picnic.  Even though the band and Nas have previously collaborated on unreleased material, Black Thought hopes that The Roots will record with Nas again soon. The Roots have been busy as the house band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” but are already working on their next album. The group members are tossing around creative concepts and a core idea for the upcoming project, which will be their tenth studio album. Their manager Rich Nichols allowed TheUrbandaily to preview some “roughs” on his iPod and from the sound of things, the time working on the show continues to pay off for the group. Their first Fallon-era project, 2010′s How I Got Over , is considered by many to be their best work. “The band is actually physically together for ‘x’ amount of hours a day, five days a week, and it affords us the ability to collaborate on whatever we might come up with,” Black Thought explains. ” And the means with which to record it immediately and be able to catalog it and refer back to it at a later date.” While looking ahead, Black Thought takes time to look back in honor of Black Music Month.  He reflects on the recently deceased Gil Scott-Heron , who The Roots have toured with in Europe on various occasions. “Gil Scott and The Last Poets and what they brought to the table represents radical, youthful expression of the 60s and 70s.  In many ways, it kind of reflects what’s going on right now.  But it’s very different—there’s an innocence in what they were doing back then that I feel has been lost now.” Tarik’s words underline why we need to celebrate our artists while they are still with us, so any fan of The Roots should make their way to Festival Pier tomorrow afternoon to take in some of the best acts that Black Music has to offer. Tyga Wants Careless World Debut To Tell ‘A Story’

The New West frontrunner tells MTV News, ‘A lot of people they just know me based off of verses, features.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Rob Markman Tyga Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News As MTV News’ New West Week comes to a close, the question is which of the myriad of MC talents coming out of the L.A. hip-hop scene is most likely to enjoy mainstream success. While the acts we’ve covered — Kendrick Lamar, Pac Div and Nipsey Hussle, to name a few — all have solid chances, the artist with the track record and best tools in place to succeed is Young Money’s Tyga. The Compton rapper already has certified hits under his belt. Even before making his YMCMB affiliation official, Tyga scored a hit with “Coconut Juice” in 2008. Then he made sure he wasn’t forgotten among the Young Money pack by dropping guest verses on hits like “BedRock” and “Roger That.” But it was last year’s collaboration with his buddy Chris Brown on their joint Fan of a Fan mixtape that spawned Tyga’s biggest hit to date, the Grammy nominated “Deuces.” Now Tyga is prepping his forthcoming album, Careless World, which he told MTV News is about 75 percent done. “You’re going to see more of a story and more into Tyga’s world and what I represent, the story that I’m trying to tell,” Tyga explained about the album. “I feel like a lot of people they just know me based off of verses, features, heavy rap songs, mixtape stuff. Which is cool because I love to do that — this is rap music — but at the same time, I make a lot of real good music also. “I don’t think a lot of people are on to that yet,” Tyga added. “I just dropped a mixtape, Black Thoughts 2, that was I say, maybe 25, 35 percent of what my album is going to sound like.” In the meantime, before Careless World gets its release later this year, Tyga is taking his music to the people. Although he isn’t a part of the Weezy-headlined I Am Still Music Tour, he’s currently on Diddy-Dirty Money’s Coming Home Tour . Diddy thought enough of Tyga to bring him on his tour, and on Thursday MTV News spoke to Young Money president Mack Maine, who told us he’s excited about pushing the Cali MC’s project forward. “I’m definitely looking forward, his buzz is up, it’s ridiculous,” Mack said. “We’re about to drop this single soon, it’s called ‘Far Away,’ featuring Chris Richardson and from there it’s basically, we need to capitalize. He also has another song that I’m waiting for Nicki to do her verse on. We’ll try to drop that single. From there, let’s just see when the people are ready for his album. But he got a lot of songs done so we’re definitely trying to put him out before the end of the year.” When Careless World does drop it will surely have plenty of YMCMB participation but Tyga assures it won’t be a scattershot compilation. “I just like to make the music organic,” Tyga said. “If I feel like, ‘This person on this will be real dope,’ then I’mma reach out and get the feature. But it’s all about making great music. If there’s features on every track but it’s great music, I mean hey … either you love it or you don’t.” Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green Sing ‘Crazy’ In ‘The Voice’ Preview

Extended sneak peek of reality singing competition aired before Thursday’s ‘Tonight Show.’ By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera Photo: Isaac Brekken/ Getty Images It’s been almost impossible to avoid the avalanche of promotion for NBC’s new reality singing competition, “The Voice.” From splashy magazine ads to endless TV promos and interviews with the show’s four celebrity coaches, the show has been getting a full-court blitz in the lead-up to Tuesday night’s premiere. The biggest push to date occurred Thursday night, when a 12-minute teaser aired before “The Tonight Show,” highlighted by an all-star performance of the Gnarls Barkley smash “Crazy” by the four judges. With Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine on drums, country star Blake Shelton on guitar and Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green adding their pristine vocals to the song that made Green a superstar, each member of the quartet brought their patented brand of star power to the pop summit. Aguilera, of course, indulged in some of her R&B diva melisma, Green his deep soul growl, Shelton a bit of country grit and Levine some surprisingly sharp drum chops. The studio audience went crazy as host Carson Daly explained the unique concept behind the show, which will have the coaches listening with their backs turned to singers vying to be their prot

‘Lemonade Mouth’ Stars Talk Possible Tour Plans

‘It’s up to the people,’ Disney co-star Blake Michael tells MTV News about the fictional TV band. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Lemonade Mouth” The Disney Channel’s latest movie, “Lemonade Mouth” debuted over the weekend. The feel-good flick about a ragtag group of teens who form a band named Lemonade Mouth is based on the book by Mark Peter Hughes, and last week we caught up with the gang who told us they’d be down to hit the road for a tour — if the fans want it. “We have no idea,” co-star Naomi Scott explained to MTV News about potential plans to take the TV band out on the road. Her co-star Blake Michael added, “It’s up to the people.” The group has already performed on “Good Morning America,” hitting the stage last week. And Hayley Kiyoko said if they were tapped to hit the road to perform tracks from the movie, they’d certainly have the skills to pay the bills. “I think we all love performing and we’re all very musically inclined and if we get a tour, that’d be awesome,” she said. “We’re just enjoying what’s going on right now and performing and we’re gonna keep doing it whether or not there’s a tour or not.” Disney has a pretty impressive track record when it comes to launching the next big thing (Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, to name a few), but regardless of what happens next with Lemonade Mouth, Scott said that they’re just living in the moment. “I don’t think that we are trying to be anything; we’re just who we are,” Scott said. “We are who we are, like we’re just ourselves and wherever that takes us; it’s not sort of a planned route. We’ll see.” What did you think of the “Lemonade Mouth” movie? Tell us in the comments! New West Artist Casey Veggies Is ‘Dreaming Big’

We profile Sleeping in Class MC for New West Week. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Casey Veggies Photo: MTV News Main Pick Rap Scholar : Casey Veggies Representing : Inglewood, California Mixtape : Sleeping in Class Real Spit : Casey Veggies is an MC who’s looking to make sure you don’t snooze on him or his talented peers, and MTV News is spotlighting the artist to start off New West Week . After catching the rhyme bug and getting positive feedback from some tracks he posted on MySpace, Casey released the Customized Greatly, Vol. 1 mixtape in 2007. Steadily improving with each new song, Odd Future knew what was up early, with Tyler the Creator throwing a couple of beats on Casey’s sophomore mixtape, Customized Greatly, Vol. 2 back in 2009. Last year, he dropped Sleeping in Class, an offering that further reveals the Inglewood, California native to be from the school of fresh beats and rhymes. “I didn’t really want Sleeping in Class … for people to think, ‘Oh he’s sleeping in class.’ That’s ignorant,” Casey told Mixtape Daily . “Really, it was like a sub-meaning and it meant that I was sleeping on everything that everyone else was telling me was the truth and what was right to do. That’s class, that’s the teacher talking to you. I was sleeping on that and I chose my own route. I chose to do what I wanted to do. So that means I’m sleeping, I’m dreaming big and I’m doing my thing.” We weren’t kidding about Casey being a student of the game, literally. While making a name for himself as an artist to watch from the West side of the map, the Inglewood High School senior made the honor roll with a 3.5 GPA. Commend the man. Joints to Check For

Miley Cyrus on Family Life: All Good!

Before Miley Cyrus embarks on her Gypsy Heart Tour on April 27, she has a message for fans and followers: “My family is good.” The singer made this statement to The Associated Press, clearing up months of rumors and controversy, most of it centered on her parents’ split, subsequent reconciliation and the scandalous comments her father made in between. Heading to South America in a couple weeks, Cyrus said “you have to make sure everyone is happy before you start traveling.” And it sounds like they are. But is there a problem between Miley and her U.S. fans? Asked why she isn’t playing any concerts in the States, the artist made an interesting comment: “I just think right now America has gotten to a place where I don’t know if they want me to tour or not. I just want to go to the places where I am getting the most love, and Australia and South America have done that for me.” Ouch. Is Miley breaking up with her American fan base? Or has it already split with her?

Jim Jonsin Keeps Busy With ‘American Idol,’ Wiz Khalifa, Eminem

Producer tells Mixtape Daily he’s working with Shady Records’ Yelawolf. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Kara Warner Jim Jonsin Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Jim Jonsin Jim Jonsin says he’s in bed by midnight, but considering his schedule, we have a tough time believing him. One of the Grammy-winning producer and music executive’s latest gigs is mentoring contestants on the current, 10th season of “American Idol.” The Brooklyn native’s job duties include cutting full cover songs within a week’s time that are then sold on iTunes . “I’m into artist development, so I like taking an artist brand new and working with them and teaching them new things and watching them grow,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “They’re having to grow at lightning speed. With the music producers injected into this now, now they’re really at hard knocks, right? Not only do you have to build this performance, but now you have to record a song. And record an amazing song that’s gotta go on iTunes for sale and it reflects you and you being an artist.” Looking at his production discography, it’s clear Jonsin’s career is nothing short of amazing itself. The former engineer for Slip-N-Slide Records has gone on to produce tracks for artists including T.I., Kelly Rowland, Usher and Lil Wayne, winning a Grammy for 2008’s “Lollipop.” Some new jacks have benefited from Jonsin’s studio touch too. Wiz Khalifa’s “On My Level” from his just-released debut, Rolling Papers , is a Jonsin creation. “He’s got that Snoop Dogg vibe with his own twist, Jay-Z kinda,” Jonsin said. “Working with Wiz, it was good. He’s kind of a traditional hip-hop artist, which I love most, mixed with this edgy skater-punk spirit. He definitely blends with my character: I like that.” Jonsin also speaks highly of B.o.B. The ATL rapper/singer/songwriter’s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released on Jonsin’s Rebel Rock label in conjunction with Atlantic Records and Grand Hustle Records. B.o.B and Jonsin have started working on the gold-selling album’s follow-up. “His last album kind of reflects who he is, but he’s growing into something new,” Jonsin said. “I’m waiting for what he brings us back when we go back in the studio — he’s got some ideas — to kind of see the direction he’s going in. We’re letting him lead that. He’s really talented. The guy produces, writes, he does a lot of his own stuff. I think his album will reflect that. I think this album will have a lot of his own work on it. We’re waiting on him to give us the direction. “I think there’ll be less features on this album, more him singing and rapping. Definitely less features: He wants to showcase himself more, put out more of his own ideas.” Another artist Jonsin is working with — Roc Nation’s J. Cole — surely has plenty of ideas, even if he has yet to release an album. “He’s that traditional hip-hop. I’m trying to give it a little Jim Jonsin, a little crossover, a little rock,” Jonsin said. “Some of the stuff we did was more traditional hip-hop with just a little edge to it, some rock in it. So I think we’re going to stick to that and see what happens.” Jonsin’s schedule is also booked with working with 50 Cent for the first time and with Eminem on his latest Shady Records signee’s forthcoming album. “That’s going to be fun,” Jonsin said. “We’re working for Yelawolf’s project. It’s all about Yela. We’re going to actually produce together. I get to work with Eminem producing records.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
