Britney Spears ‘Legitimizes’ Pauly D’s DJ Career, ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Says

‘Britney Spears is performing her new album at Rain while I’m DJing. I couldn’t ask for anything more,’ Pauly D says of last Friday’s Vegas gig. By Jocelyn Vena Pauly D Photo: MTV News Shortly after it was announced that Pauly D would be the resident DJ at Rain nightclub at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the “Jersey Shore” star was bestowed with another honor: He was to DJ Britney Spears’ surprise gig in Las Vegas , which was taped for her MTV special “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale,” airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “For me, I love Las Vegas, I love DJing. It’s my heart. I locked down this huge residency, which I always wanted, and now I find out Britney Spears is performing her new album at Rain while I’m DJing. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Pauly D dished to MTV News last Friday. “I’m at Las Vegas now. What it means to DJ a concert like a Britney Spears concert or something like that, it’s an association with monsters like Britney Spears and it just legitimizes your career. And it’s just fun like being onstage with Britney Spears performing like she’s performing. I love it. I couldn’t ask for more.” Given that Pauly D plays a mix of popular music and more underground house, he admits that he doesn’t have to change his style up too much for a gig with Spears. “I keep up on music. I keep up on current music. I play everything. I’m open format,” he explained. “I play geared to the crowd, so I don’t prep my set. For this I go out there, I kind of wing it. I look at the crowd, I have an idea. I like to play the new stuff that’s hot. I feed off the crowd.” Pauly also explained the rules he has for his craft. “A DJ should not play the artist’s songs at her concert ’cause she has to perform these songs,” he said. “I’m not going to be playing any Britney before she performs; maybe after. I’ll let her perform, let her shine ’cause it’s her night.” The Vegas show is one of many highlights in the “I Am the Femme Fatale” special. Spears gives fans a taste of what it was like making the album, including behind-the-scenes footage of her in the studio with will.i.am and an intimate chat with Sway Calloway in which she opens up about her life and her career. To see what Spears has to say about her new album and watch her as she puts the finishing touches on it, don’t miss the “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special, airing Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Carrie Underwood Is ‘Loving’ New ‘American Idol’ Panel

‘Steven and J.Lo are doing such an amazing job,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Carrie Underwood Photo: MTV News Carrie Underwood has come a long way since she was the wide-eyed winner of “American Idol” back in 2005 — with a Grammy-winning country career under her belt — but she still takes the time to watch the show that made her a star. When MTV News caught up with Underwood recently as she promoted her acting debut in the new film “Soul Surfer,” we had to ask her thoughts on the changes to the new season, particularly the new faces added to the judges’ panel. “I am loving the judges,” Underwood said. “I know Simon [Cowell] was always such a huge part of the show, but if I had just started watching now, I wouldn’t miss it, you know what I mean? I think Steven [Tyler] and J.Lo are doing such an amazing job. I actually got the chance to talk to Steven Tyler, and I was like, ‘I’m finding out that I like you more than I thought I did.’ ” Underwood said she liked the Aerosmith frontman before he joined the show, but she’s enjoying seeing a softer side of his rock-star persona. “I’ve always liked Steven Tyler the artist, but as a person, he’s really coming across [as] charming and warm and friendly and encouraging,” she said. “Of course we always knew that J.Lo is sweet and beautiful, and she’s just confirming all of our previous thoughts about her by being on the show. I’m really enjoying watching it.” So who are her favorite contestants? “I always have a few that I’m watching, but I never say who they are because I remember what it was like when I was on the show, and I never liked that [when past contestants picked favorites].” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Wiz Khalifa Wants To Rap Over ‘Really Tight’ Mumford & Sons Song

‘Roll Up’ MC tells MTV News he’s a fan of the rock quartet during Spring Break in Las Vegas. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway and Wiz Photo: MTV News Spring Break is a chance for willing college kids to try something new. So in the spirit of the yearly tradition, Wiz Khalifa — one of the performers at MTV’s Spring Break 2011 , along with Snoop Dogg, Pitbull and Lupe Fiasco — spoke to MTV News about experimenting with rhyming. We asked the “Black and Yellow” star whose music he would pick if he could rap over any other artist’s song. “Mumford & Sons, they got a really tight song that I wanna rap over,” Wiz said. “That I would totally rap over if I had the chance to ’cause usually, when I see the video or hear the song, I get it real quick but now I have to ask again. I forgot. [Editor’s note: Wiz is likely referring either to M&S singles “Little Lion Man” or “The Cave.”] “They’re tight and really musical,” he said about the West London quartet. “I like the instruments they use, like bongos. It’s tight and acceptable.” Although Wiz took to the Las Vegas stage joined by his DJ, the Pittsburgh rapper said he also had a band in mind if he needed a crew to back him: the Disco Biscuits. “They’re hard,” he explained. “It’s just sound-y. When you get that vibe and that music, it just feels good and makes you feel a certain way when you hear it.” Khalifa, an MTV News 11 for ’11 pick, is set to celebrate his major-label debut on Tuesday, when Rolling Papers arrives in stores and at online retailers. “We got a couple of surprises along the way to keep people interested,” he told MTV News last month. “But really, other than that, the album is done. We’re really excited. Everyone is excited. [Warner Music Group executive] Lyor [Cohen] came through to a session. I got so much support from the single and going into the album. So when we do drop it, I think we’ll get that response that everyone was expecting.” Catch Wiz performing in Las Vegas during MTV’s Spring Break on Monday night (March 28) on MTV at 9:50 p.m. ET. Nicki Minaj Wants To Get Audience ‘Riled Up’ On Lil Wayne Tour

‘At the end of the day, it’s hip-hop. Let’s not get that misconstrued or anything,’ Pink Friday star says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj performs during the I Am Music 2011 tour opener in Providence, Rhode Island Wednesday Photo: Getty Images Don’t get it twisted: Nicki Minaj is an MC first and foremost, she says. Forget the theatrics, ’cause when she gets onstage, she wants to pump energy into the crowd. And to do that, she goes back to her roots. “You always want to start the show and get everybody riled up,” she told MTV News during the kickoff to Lil Wayne’s I Am Music II Tour . “At the end of the day, it’s hip-hop. Let’s not get that misconstrued or anything. People see the way I’m dressed and forget what I’m really doing. Why I’m really here is ’cause I write my raps. Why I’m really here is because I’m an MC. Why I’m really here is because I can go toe-to-toe with dudes. So we want to start the show off saying, Yep, this is Nicki Minaj and this is what I do.” And the Pink Friday star certainly does do those things. She arrived onstage Wednesday night with a booming introduction courtesy of the film “Gladiator.” From there, she launched into a spirited rendition of her Lil’ Kim dis track, “Roman’s Revenge.” Later on, she moved on to her pop fare, including “Your Love” and “Right Thru Me.” But the Queens rapper said she wanted to start the proceedings off by reminding everyone of the artist she was when Lil Wayne first discovered her rapping on a DVD. When we spoke to Wayne about signing Minaj, he told us how she developed into an artist who can hold her own. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne told MTV News about Nicki . “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I don’t have a clue about what you’re doing right now, but it’s working, do it.” Related Videos Watch Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj And Birdman On This Week’s ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Nicki Minaj Lil Wayne
