Demi Lovato Calls ‘Skyscraper’ Her ‘Cry For Help’

‘That video was an emotional release for me, like therapy,’ she tells E! News. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato in her “Skyscraper” video Photo: Hollywood Records Demi Lovato is feeling better these days. Her ups and downs are evident in her latest single, “Skyscraper,” which she said helped her confront her issues before she landed in treatment late last fall. She recorded two versions — one last year during her darker days and one after she left treatment — but, she told E! News , “It just didn’t feel the same, so we kept the original one. For me it was … so symbolic, it being the song I recorded before treatment and yet it was providing a message. It’s so crazy the way things played out, that it ended up being my symbol and it represented what I’m trying to spread the word about: getting help and rising above any issues that [I and] my fans are dealing with.” As emotionally draining as it was to record the track, she said it also hurt her physically to be in the studio working on it. “I was doubled over, just in pain. I remember thinking, ‘This is kind of my cry for help’ back then, because I hadn’t spoken to anyone about these issues,” she said in the interview with Ryan Seacrest. “And I hadn’t gotten the help that I needed.” Those emotions are also touched on in the video, which will be released this week . “That video was an emotional release for me, like therapy. … I kept crying, I was so emotionally invested. … That’s when I realized, that’s what music videos are all about. “There were so many things that represented my addictions and eating disorders and self-harm,” she added about the video. “When I’m unraveling this black fabric … it was the toxicity that took over my mind for so long, that oozed out of every pore that I had because I was suffering inside. … I’m taking it off and walking on broken glass and powering through it.” Lovato is very open about the fact that, while she isn’t hurting herself anymore, she still isn’t 100 percent. “I’m not going to be perfect, but … if I can make it through the day, that’s all that matters,” she said. “It’s a daily journey, and it’s definitely going to be a struggle that I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life.” Share your well-wishes for Demi in the comments below. ‘X Factor’ Preview Signals Return Of Simon And Paula

Promo teases a kinder, gentler head judge … before showing Cowell will be no such thing on new show this fall. By James Dinh The “X Factor” judges Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX America got its first taste of Simon Cowell’s highly anticipated American “X Factor” series (premiering September 21) during a new TV spot that aired on Fox Tuesday night (July 12) during the Major League Baseball’s 82nd All-Star Game, and as expected, the teaser was nothing short of over-the-top. The almost three-minute promo begins on an eerily positive note as judges Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid are approached by a young girl on the first day of auditions. “Hi. What’s your name, sweetheart?” Adbul asks the contestant, who replies, “Lillian,” and Cowell wishes her luck. After she delivers a less-than-mediocre rendition of “Annie” classic “Tomorrow,” the judges — including Simon — lavishly praise Lillian. The promo pans to shots of the panel greeting a line of fans while Cowell delivers some inspiring lines. “Let’s face it: A year is a long time,” he says, as we see him uncharacteristically smiling and shaking hands like a politician. “We’ll change your attitudes and this is a different decade. It’s not about me anymore. It’s about them. I want to make people’s dreams come true. “I even think about the environment,” Cowell continues, as he gets into a Chevy Volt (one of several blatant Chevy product placements in the ad). “My attitude this year? Helping others make a better tomorrow.” If viewers didn’t notice the comic nature of Simon’s words, they sure caught wind when the series of terrible “Tomorrow” auditions pile up in a distorted montage, until he wakes up from the dream. Following glamour shots of the four judges stepping out of private planes as Guns N’ Roses’ “Live and Let Die” blasts in the background, we finally get a glimpse of some not-so-scripted footage from the forthcoming reality competition. Now there’s loads of critical feedback from Cowell and Reid, while Scherzinger and Abdul appear moved by some auditioners. Not only is the acerbic Simon back, but so is the unpredictable Paula, and we see her gushing over a singer, shoving a cup out of Simon’s hand and snapping back at an audience member. “What else did you expect?” Cowell asks the camera, as the ad comes to a close. Blink-182 To Release New Single ‘Up All Night’ Friday

Band has been talking about elusive comeback single since 2009. By Gil Kaufman Blink 182 Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Like a whisper campaign about a tatted-up unicorn, Blink-182 ‘s elusive first reunion single, “Up All Night,” has been the subject of chatter for years. The band first started talking about the tune in 2009, when they reunited after a nearly four-year hiatus, but because the recorded version of the song wasn’t quite finished at that point, they decided against playing the song live during their subsequent tours. But now they’re ready to pull back the curtain on the song, which is slated to premiere at 10:30 a.m. EST on Friday. The tune will roll out on powerhouse Los Angeles rock station KROQ (106.7 FM) and on the band’s official website , according to an announcement posted on the group’s official Facebook page . While recording on the band’s first new album since their self-titled 2003 disc was recently wrapped, a release date for the as-yet-untitled CD has not been announced. Blink went on indefinite hiatus in 2005 amid inter-band tensions and announced their reunion at the 2009 Grammy Awards. They then hit the road that summer along with Weezer and Fall Out Boy. Though they’ve kept it off the live list for two years, it’s likely “Night” will be added to the band’s set when they kick off their upcoming Honda Civic-sponsored tour dates with My Chemical Romance on August 5 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. In addition to MCR, the band will be joined by a rotating list of other support acts on the tour, including Manchester Orchestra, Rancid, Against Me! and Matt & Kim. Bassist Mark Hoppus sounded pumped about the new songs in a recent Facebook post , writing, “Currently listening to THE FIRST MIX FROM THE NEW ALBUM!! Sounds kick. Ass. Cannot wait until this album is released! BOOM!!!” Related Artists My Chemical Romance Fall Out Boy Weezer Blink 182

Joe Jonas Appreciates Fan Support For Fast Life

‘See No More’ singer ‘got the reaction right away’ on debut solo single. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: MTV News Joe Jonas seems to be getting all the support he needs from his fans as he embarks on releasing his solo album, Fast Life , this September. The album will be an intimate look at the inner monologue of the Jonas Brother. While it’s a bit of a scary process going at it without his brothers, he said fan feedback is making the transition a lot easier. “I was really excited,” he told MTV News about hearing fans’ comments. “I love the world we live in where you can know what people are thinking right away.” He added that while much of the response has been positive, he’s also cool with any criticism that might come his way. “I guess you like it and you don’t like it, but I like it because [my single] ‘See No More,’ when it released on iTunes, I got the reaction right away of what people are thinking.” The song’s video also got tons of feedback, but long before the video dropped, it took a little work getting it all together. “The video kind of came together with a concept I had using a house as a metaphor to show destruction of a heart or of the mind,” he explained. “The first director didn’t work out. I kept fighting to find the right treatment.” That right treatment put Joe in an “almost dream world with a house where the house is falling apart, the house is on fire, there’s explosions,” he explained. “And I’m a guy, so I was immediately really excited about that.” So, how does “See No More” co-writer Chris Brown feel about the release? “He’s really pumped for the song and he gave his support, which was really cool,” Jonas said. RZA Teases Unreleased ODB Material

‘When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with,’ Wu-Tang mastermind says of late friend’s music. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy RZA Photo: MTV News Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothin’ ta eff wit, and neither are the RZA ‘s beats. While in Berlin promoting his new headphone line Chambers by Rza, the Wu producer told MTV News that he has given beats to a number of hip-hop artists, including Nas, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, as well as his cousin and Wu-partner GZA for his Liquid Swords 2 album. “Me and GZA talked about doing Liquid Swords part 2, a sequel. We talked about it for a while,” RZA said about the follow-up to GZA’s 1996 album. “We actually started a little and then we pulled back based on scheduling, based on my movie.” RZA’s love affair with Hollywood is no secret. As an actor, Bobby Digital has appeared in “American Gangster” alongside Russell Crowe and has recently been cast in “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.” RZA has also been hard at work directing “The Man With the Iron Fists,” a movie set in feudal China which will star Russell Crowe, Pam Grier and Lucy Liu. “The movie has taken me out of the loop of music. But what I have been doing, I’ve been going to studios and inviting people to my studio. So I went to the studio with Luda and I emptied beats from my beat machine for him. Whether he use it or not is up to him, but I just been emptying out my beat machines,” RZA said before revealing more of his collaborative hopefuls. “I emptied out some beats on Busta, I emptied out some beats on Nas, emptied out some beats for [Ghostface Killah] and for Wu-Tang Clan — just sent them 20 beats a few weeks ago.” Though he is very passionate about making movies at the moment, RZA knows music is what got him where he is today. “I really want to put a lot of my energy into film, but I know that I got here because of music and I know people dig my music. And I’m like, ‘Why not put the music out there too?’ ” Judging from his activity, it is a safe bet that fans can hear a lot of new RZA music in the near future, but anyone expecting to hear collaborations between the producer and his cousin, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, shouldn’t get their hopes up. While the Abbot does confirm that he has plenty of unreleased Ol’ Dirty material, releasing those tunes are quite difficult. “That’s a very tricky situation, because ODB has passed and he has an estate,” he said. “When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with. I tried to put out a song last year called ‘Dirt’s the Boogie,’ and they threatened me with an injunction and I wrote the lyrics to the song. Made the beat, wrote the lyrics and Dirty just performed it.” Instead of holding onto the work, though, RZA is contemplating leaving the unheard recordings to Dirty’s son when the time is right. “I will tell the fans, I do have a few 2-inch reels of material nobody has but me. I don’t know what I’ll do with it,” he said. “Maybe in time I’ll just give it to his son, I don’t know.” Do you want to hear RZA’s ODB tapes? Let us know in the comments! Demi Lovato Finds Strength On ‘Skyscraper’

‘All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet,’ the star sings on new track. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Demi Lovato’s new single “Skyscraper” is finally here. The empowering ballad about finding strength in the wake of a waning relationship dropped on Tuesday (July 12). A piano plays as Demi sings, “Sky’s are crying, I am watching catching teardrops in my hands/ Only silence, as it’s ending, like we never had a chance.” By the second verse, an empowered Lovato begins to find more strength. As a beat kicks in, she sings, “As the smoke clears/ I awaken and untangle you from me/ Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed?/ All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet.” And on the chorus, she proclaims, “You can take everything I have/ You can break everything I am/ Like I’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper/ Go on and try and tear me down/ I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper.” The song closes out with Demi proudly belting out that chorus. In a teaser for the video , directed by Mark Pellington and dropping this week, Demi is seen standing alone in the desert. She looks straight into the camera before the clip fades out. “This song is so special to me because it’s inspired by my journey and the struggles that I’ve dealt with this past year,” she told Seventeen.com . “I hope people are able to relate to it and realize that they are able to rise above and overcome any obstacle, no matter the circumstances, and shine like a skyscraper. I am still on a personal journey dealing with my own issues each and every day, but the best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help.” The song was written by Toby Gad and will be her first big release since leaving treatment earlier this year. “Recording this song was such an amazing experience for me. It was such an incredible and emotional process, and I couldn’t have asked for a better producer to work with than Toby Gad,” she said. “Toby is one of the sweetest people I know and I am so proud of the work we did together. My biggest wish for this song is that it’s able to inspire others and urge them to keep moving forward no matter what the odds.” What do you think of Demi’s new single? Tell us in the comments. Katy Perry Follows Lady Gaga In Mermaid Trend

Perry posts photo of herself ‘planking’ in fins shortly after Gaga teases a mermaid-themed video. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry/ Twitter Of all the potential beefs in the music industry, mermaids didn’t seem like the most likely of instigators. But that may change. Shortly after Lady Gaga teased that her mermaid alter ego, Yuyi, might be “born” in her next music video, Katy Perry tweeted a photo of herself dressed as a mermaid. “PROPER planking FTW! #itswhatArielwoulddo,” she wrote on Twitter , showing off her second entry into the Internet phenom of planking , in which people post photos of themselves lying face down, with their arms at their sides, in awkward locations. In the photo, Perry is done up in full mermaid attire: She’s wearing a purple wig with a starfish hairpin, a shimmering aqua-and-pink mermaid tail with a matching bra top. She’s surrounded by shiny paper acting as water and a bridge prop looms in the background. There’s been no word on the official purpose of the photo shoot. While Gaga hasn’t commented on any mermaid similarities, her creative director, Laurieann Gibson, did make reference to it on Twitter just hours after Perry tweeted the photo of herself. “Proud of my artist #1 in the world @Ladygaga her vision& passion. even though they try to steal a tail there’s only 1 Mermaid, Swim On!!!” Gibson wrote . Gaga has certainly been trying to make her mermaid phase happen for some time now. She initially introduced fans to Yuyi on Twitter earlier this summer and donned mermaid attire for her performance on “Le Grand Journal.” Though she apparently nixed the rumored mermaid treatment for her “Edge of Glory” video , she told a Taiwanese talk show last week that Yuyi is “in incubation” and may appear in the video for her yet-unannounced fourth Born This Way single. Of course, neither Gaga nor Perry would be the first pop star to think of using the mythological creatures for their sets. In Madonna’s black-and-white clip for 1989’s “Cherish,” directed by the late fashion photographer Herb Ritts, Madonna splashes in the waves with mermen. Mermaids are popping up elsewhere in pop culture too, as a major plot point in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and in several new novels, including an upcoming book by “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer. 50 Cent Relates Kidd Kidd’s Shooting To His Own

50 talks to MTV News about G-Unit’s newest signee on set of Tony Yayo’s ‘Haters’ video. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Kidd Kidd, Tony Yayo, Shawty Lo and 50 Cent Photo: MTV News When 50 Cent was infamously shot nine times in May 2000, his violent reality was just too much for his first label, Columbia Records, so they dropped him. This past June, G-Unit’s newest signee Kidd Kidd was shot six times in his native New Orleans, but instead of backing out of the deal, it drew 50 closer to the youngster. “Them boys down in New Orleans, they’re active,” 50 told MTV News. “It’s a lot goin’ on down there, and because I experienced it, I didn’t move away from it. I actually ID’d with the situation a little more. He got hit six times, he got a bag on now,” 50 said as Kidd Kidd lifted his shirt to reveal a colostomy bag on the set of Tony Yayo’s “Haters” video. “Columbia, when that situation took place with me, they walked away from me just because they’re not familiar with the actual environment and what happens at different points,” he continued. “It don’t make me no difference: I understand it.” Kidd got his start as a part of Lil Wayne’s Young Money camp and even appeared as a guest on Tha Carter III single “Mrs. Officer.” Now that he is with G-Unit, the NOLA spitter has since collaborated with Fif on his own single “Better Walk” as well as the title track of 50’s upcoming album. “It’s a blessing getting down with Fif. It’s real, it’s all love,” Kidd said. “There ain’t too many real people in the industry, period. I’ve been around a lot, and right now it’s time. I never felt like this before.” Related Artists 50 Cent Kidd Kidd
