Foster The People Go Post-Apocalyptic For ‘Helena Beat’ Video

Band describes their ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ follow-up as ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster The People Photo: MTV News Last week, Foster the People shared their plans to follow-up their dark-horse Summer Jam 2011 candidate “Pumped Up Kicks” with a Kenny G collaboration on their next album, even if Katy Perry beat them to the punch on that cameo. In the meantime, the guys are still pushing ahead with a brand new single and video, neither of which feature the sax majesty of G, but still promise to be thoroughly weird in their own right. “Our next single’s going to be ‘Helena Beat,’ and we just shot a video for it, which we’re just finishing now. I think today, actually, it was finished,” frontman Mark Foster told MTV News. “It’s like a short film, really. It’s post-apocalyptic, ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max,’ so, it’s a bunch of kids, and they kidnap us and take us into this warehouse, and there’s a really crazy twist at the end. But it’s super-visual, and it’s a mixture of really, like, bizarre circumstances — it’s dark, but it’s also pretty tongue-in-cheek and fun.” Foster said that the band also shot a clip for their song “Houdini” at Los Angeles’ iconic El Rey Theatre (“We shot a video there before we actually played there,” he laughed), but that it’ll be “Helena” that gets the full push at radio. And though it draws the unenviable task of having to follow in the footsteps of “Pumped Up Kicks,” the guys in Foster the People believe in the song’s power, mostly because it’s become their favorite moment in their ever-increasing live set. “‘Helena Beat’ is actually my favorite song in the set. … I get to run around with a guitar and bang on drums,” Foster laughed. “So, you know, it’s good. ” Related Artists Foster the People

Lil Wayne’s Carter IV ‘Totally Done’

MC also tells MTV News that hit ‘How to Love’ was inspired by Tupac’s ladies’ anthem ‘Keep Ya Head Up.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Tunechi’s back and Tha Carter IV is done! During an interview with MTV News last week, Lil Wayne confirmed that the recording of the highly anticipated fourth installment of his Tha Carter series is finished and will drop at the end of August, a day after the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards air live on August 28. “The album is done and it’ll be out August 29. It’s totally done,” Wayne told us. While the MC’s upcoming mixtape, Sorry for the Wait, will no doubt feature Wayne spewing rapid-fire rap over concussive beats, judging by the latest Carter IV single, the album will offer even more diversity. According to Wayne, the acoustic-flavored, sing-songy “How to Love” was actually inspired by Tupac Shakur. “That song is just sweeping the world. It’s touching every woman, that’s what it was for,” Wayne said. “It was like Tupac had ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ and it was a message to women and little girls across the world just to keep your head up even though things are hard. That’s what my song was.” ‘Pac’s 1993 song became one of his biggest hits. On it, Shakur rapped about the plight of single mothers and battered women. For “How to Love,” Weezy also lends a sympathetic ear. “A lot of women don’t know how to love because there’s deep reasons for them not knowing how to love,” he explained. “And what I mean by deep reasons is deep and dark reasons. A lot of people don’t open up that can and I figured that I can open up that can of worms and see what happens.” How do you think Wayne’s “How to Love” compares to Tupac’s “Keep Ya Head Up”? Joe Jonas Wants To Hit The Road With Chris Brown

‘We liked working together, so I can see it working,’ Joe tells MTV News of his ‘See No More’ partner. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Joe Jonas was once a curly-haired kid from New Jersey who sang bubblegum pop/rock songs about puppy love with his brothers. Well, he’s grown up a lot since then. He chopped off his hair and, on his first-ever solo album , Fast Life, he’s opening up about falling in and out of love. And in August, the middle JoBro turns a very grown-up 22. So, what does he have planned for the big day? “I don’t have any birthday plans yet, actually,” he told MTV News recently. “I don’t even know where we’re going to be because we’re trying to figure out a touring situation right now and it either looks like I’m going on my tour, my own tour, or opening up for somebody, supporting somebody on tour.” While his plans are still to be determined, he was sure of one thing: “Wherever I am, there will be a party and it will be fun.” Speaking of tours, Joe was once rumored to be hitting the road with Britney Spears on her now all-female Femme Fatale trek . Those plans didn’t pan out, of course, and now he’s looking to hook up with someone else on the road. Joe even shared his dream tourmate with us. “My dream list, wow … I mean, doing a tour with Chris would be cool,” he said of Chris Brown, who helped the singer pen his first single, “See No More.” “I feel like, musically, we both have the same sounds and we liked working together, so I can see it working.” Joe’s album drops in September , and he told us that he’s not holding back on it. “It was scary in the beginning,” he said of doing a solo LP, “just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” he explained. Katy Perry Postpones Tour Dates Due To Illness

Pop star reschedules two concerts after ‘an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.’ By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Another day, another sick pop star cancels summer tour dates. Just two days after Taylor Swift announced to fans that she would have to postpone dates on her Speak Now Tour because of bronchitis, Katy Perry said on Friday (July 8) that she will have to postpone two dates on her California Dreams trek after suffering from “an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.” According to a statement from concert promoters Jam Productions, Perry has rescheduled her July 8 show at Chicago’s Allstate Arena for August 21, and her July 9 gig at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center for August 23 in the same venues. And once recovered, Perry said she plans to make it up to her fans. “I apologize to my fans in Chicago and the Twin Cities for not being able to perform this weekend, but I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!” she said. Perry also took to Twitter to deliver the unfortunate news, tweeting , “Chicago and St. Paul – I’m so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow’s shows. But I’ll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!” Despite the tour-date postponement, the pop singer has been riding high off of her mega-successful Teenage Dream album, which is closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s #1 singles record. If the LP’s recently released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” hits the top of the Billboard Hot 100, she’ll become the first female artist to have five chart-topping songs off one album. Additionally, Perry will become the first artist to nab the record since Jackson, who had five #1 singles off his Bad album in the late-’80s. Send your well-wishes for a speedy recovery to Katy in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

‘The Ward’ Star Amber Heard Recalls Filming In Real Asylum

‘We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane,’ actress tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Amber Heard in “The Ward” Photo: Echo Lake Entertainment John Carpenter fans have had a long wait between films from their favorite genre man. The director of cult favorites like “Halloween,” “Escape From LA” and “The Thing” has been on a hiatus of sorts but finally returns to multiplexes after a 10-year absence with this week’s “The Ward.” This psychological thriller takes place in a special ward in a mental hospital and revolves around new arrival Kristen (Amber Heard), who has no idea how she ended up institutionalized. As she slowly gets to know the other patients, played by Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Lyndsy Fonseca and Laura-Leigh, she realizes they are all hiding a terrible and deadly secret. When MTV News caught up with Carpenter and Heard to talk about their thriller, we asked how much of a creepy factor was added into the film simply by the practical effect of their filming location — an actual abandoned mental hospital. “It was in an abandoned building on a campus with crazy people in a mental institution, the criminally insane,” Carpenter explained of their set. “We were cozily sandwiched between the prison for the criminally insane and the hospital for the mentally insane,” Heard added. “We had this prime little location right between the two. We were fenced in.” Carpenter said they didn’t have to do anything to make the set look scary. “It’s an old building, a dusty old building that they had left and was perfect for us,” he said. “What’s scary about this location was that it was real. It was just creepy.” When asked to explain if there are any signature shots or nods to Carpenter’s previous work that fans might appreciate in this film, the veteran genre director said he can’t please everyone, so he focuses on stories that he likes first. “John Carpenter fans are unexpected human beings. A lot live under freeways and cardboard boxes, a lot live in mental institutions,” he said. “I really can’t think about them too much when I make a movie. The prime inspiration for me is the story. What kind of story? I got typecast as a horror director in the late ’70s with ‘Halloween,’ but I’ve managed to have a career by doing different things,” he revealed. “This one was great, an all-female cast, an ensemble cast who had to work together in an isolated dark shadowy location, and there’s something walking around at night. [It was] great fun.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Ward.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears, Taking Back Sunday Video Worlds Collide Thanks To Director

Chris Marrs Piliero explains why the cat in ‘Faith (Never Let You Down)’ comes across an Easter egg from ‘I Wanna Go. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Warner Bros. Taking Back Sunday ‘s video for “Faith (Never Let You Down)” is a social commentary about the fleeting nature of Internet fame, as illustrated by a fake cat trying to make it in Hollywood. It also happens to be the latest installment in the kooky videography of music video auteur Chris Marrs Piliero. “It was an idea that I had floating around in my head, and when I listened to the song … the meaning of the song clicked in my brain,” the director said of the clip, which follows his cheeky video for Britney Spears’ “I Wanna Go.” “People just love cat videos,” he explained. “And I just thought it would be fun to see what it would like if a cat had the brain to be like, ‘Sh–, I’m a big deal.’ ” In the video, Taking Back Sunday post a clip of their cat online, and soon “OMG, WTF TBS Cat” goes viral. The cat eventually hops on a bus to L.A. (with a quick nod to Guns N’ Roses “Welcome to the Jungle”), finds fame, disses the TBS guys, fails to make it as an actor, winds up in porn and eventually can’t handle the pressure. Then, of course, TBS Cat heads back home. Was that cat as difficult in real life as he was in the video? “I was like halfway into the shoot, and he was throwing out demands,” Piliero recalled, laughing. “It got to the point where no one was allowed to make eye contact with him on set. I had to sit him down and have a heart to heart with him.” Along with the GNR homage and a few other pop-culture references, the video includes a cute Easter egg for Britney fans: One of TBS cat’s discarded audition scripts is for the fantasy Spears sequel, “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder,” which is also on the marquee in “I Wanna Go.” “I made the TBS video right after the Britney video,” he said. “I felt like the cat could exist in the same world as the ‘I Wanna Go’ world, so I thought it would be a fun little Easter egg. Also, [frontman] Adam [Lazzara] from TBS texted me after watching the Britney video, and I didn’t even realize that during the paparazzi fight when she swings the mic around — that is something that Adam does all the time, which is something I was very conscious of — but I didn’t realize the scene happened in front of a store called Keaton’s, and his son is called Keaton!” Related Artists Taking Back Sunday Britney Spears
