Foster The People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks’: Bullying At The Beach

The band is surprised that their cheery-sounding song about a kid with a gun is a contender for Summer Jam of 2011. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster the People performing live Photo: Joseph Llanes/ Foster the People Chances are, if you’ve been within a five-mile radius of a radio this summer, you’ve probably heard Foster the People ‘s “Pumped Up Kicks,” their hazy, fuzzy track that has become an unexpected smash and a genuine contender for the Summer Jam of 2011 . But have you really listened to the song — or, more specifically, its lyrics? In keeping with the grand tradition of such alt-hits like Eels’ “Novocaine for the Soul” and the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today,” the track manages to hide a rather dark message beneath all the mirth. ” ‘Pumped Up Kicks,’ is really about bullying, and the tragedy that bullying produces … if that kid retaliates in a nasty way; both sides end up being harmed,” Foster frontman Mark Foster told MTV News. “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun,” goes the chorus, in a deceptively cheery tone. “I tend to do that with a lot of songs,” Foster said. “I like to tell a different type of story, lyrically, than what the music is expressing, because it brings another layer to the story itself. I wrote it a block away from the beach, and I was working at a music house — Mophonics, a place where I composed for ads and stuff — and I think that had some influence on the sound.” And while Foster the People might be getting a kick out of the fact that their decidedly dark tune has become one of the year’s biggest tracks, they’re also blown away by its slow-burning success … because, really, they never thought “Kicks” would do everything that it has. “I wrote the song like a year and half ago, and for it to still be circling around and become a summer song this year, I think it was definitely unexpected on our part,” Foster said. “We like the song, but we had no idea it would spread around the world the way that it has.” Still, they’re taking full advantage of their newfound clout. Foster said he’s already working on the follow-up to their debut, Torches (which just came out in May), bringing a portable studio out on the road — and they’ve got big plans for another potential hit. Or, we should say, they had big plans … until Katy Perry went ahead and ruined them with her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” video . “Yeah, we really want to get Kenny G involved on a track, he would just slay it,” Foster sighed. “And I think we were all really bummed out, actually, when we found out that Katy Perry put him in her video, because we had been talking about that for a year — bringing Kenny G into the fold and writing something with him. But, that’s OK. Katy Perry had it first, we’ll have sloppy seconds.” Is “Pumped Up Kicks” one of your favorite songs of the summer? Talk about it in the comments! Related Artists Foster the People

Ghostface Killah Sued For Sampling ‘Iron Man’ Theme Song

Wu-Tang Clan rapper has long had a fascination with the superhero. By Gil Kaufman Ghostface Killah Photo: Scott Gries/ Getty Images The Wu-Tang Clan has never been shy about flaunting their influences: from martial arts to La Cosa Nostra, chess and, of course, superhero comics. But member Ghostface Killah’s love of one Marvel icon in particular, Iron Man, is putting the Shaolin rapper in some hot legal water. According to The Hollywood Reporter, composer Jack Urbont is suing Sony Music Entertainment and Ghostface (born Dennis Coles) over claims the rapper illegally sampled his “Iron Man Theme” from the 1960s “The Marvel Super Heroes” TV show. Ghostface, who named his 1996 solo debut Ironman, and whose many aliases include Ironman and the superhero’s alter ego, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (which Ghostface spells Starks), has long had a fascination with the character. But Urbont claims in his suit that two songs on Ghostface’s second album, 2000’s Supreme Clientele copied “verbatim” the “Theme” he wrote for the show. Urbont is an actor and Broadway producer who has also written theme music for everything from daytime soaps such as “General Hospital” to music for “That ’70s Show” and “The View.” The Reporter speculated that Urbont’s suit came so long after the album’s release because the composer “may have grown tired of seeing Killah’s name attached to his music on the Internet.” The character has obviously gotten a much higher profile over the past few years thanks to the two “Iron Man” movies. In fact, one of Ghostface’s songs, “Slept on Tony with Dirt,” appeared in the 2008 “Iron Man” movie and the rapper appears in a deleted scene on the DVD version of the film. The case is described as a typical copyright infringement claim, but the Reporter noted that Urbont’s lawyers also threw in an unfair competition claim. “Defendant Ghostface is also known for the nickname ‘Tony Starks,’ which is a take-off of the name ‘Tony Stark,’ Iron Man’s real name and true identity. In this way, Defendants’ use of Urbont’s ‘Iron Man Theme’ gives them a substantial commercial advantage by linking Ghostface to Iron Man without paying for it,” the allegation reads. A spokesperson for Ghostface could not be reached at press time. Related Artists Ghostface Killah

Justin Bieber, Lil Twist Song ‘Is Going To Really Do It’

Young Money MC tells MTV News the pair are working on a clip for single ‘Wherever You Are.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Lil Twist Photo: MTV News Late last year, Justin Bieber and his “homey” Lil Twist revealed they were working on a mixtape. Well, fans may soon get to hear a song and see a video from that mixtape. MTV News spoke to rapper Twist at 106 & Park’s Closer to My Dreams tour stop in Los Angeles on Thursday, and he was enthusiastic that once the song reaches the masses, it would have a good chance at making a play in our race for Summer Jam of 2011 . “My third single, ‘Wherever You Are,’ ” Twist said of his summer jam pick. “It features my little brother Justin Bieber and I believe that that record is going to really do it,” he told us. Twist went on to dish about the duo’s plans to step up their game for the song’s forthcoming video.”We’re gonna get some treatments [written],” he said. “We’re not just gonna pick any treatment because that video could just be out of here. We got a few different ones; I don’t mean to name any [directors], but a few different ones. It’s going to turn out great.” The collaboration between the two young stars has been long-simmering, with Bieber and Twist teasing a full mixtape. For now, though, fans will have to settle for one track. Last November, Twist explained that Bieber had come up with the idea to work on some music together. “Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend and after that we got real cool actually,” he recalled. “[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the MacBook and everything. And then he was like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let’s go.’ We just started then.” Are you looking forward to the Bieber/Twist collabo? Tell us in the comments! Demi Lovato To Drop ‘Skyscraper’ Next Tuesday

Song will debut on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Demi Lovato is ready to launch her comeback. On Tuesday the singer will drop her highly anticipated new single, “Skyscraper.” It will debut on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show , and the singer will also call in to chat with Seacrest about the track. This marks Lovato’s first big release of any kind since leaving treatment earlier this year. And while little is known about the song, Lovato told MTV News last summer that she was planning on making more R&B-sounding music. “I’m now just taking that next step and learning how to make my music more radio-friendly but also stay very artistic, and for me that’s R&B,” she said, revealing her dream of collaborating with Drake or Trey Songz . “I can put my vocal stylings on songs that are R&B and it showcases my vocals more than just singing really loud on a rock song.” In a Seventeen magazine blog post , she wrote, “My first single is really special to me — to me it symbolizes my journey from the person I was to the happy healthy person I am today, and the fact that people are able to rise above anything, despite the odds.” Lovato revealed on Twitter that she has shot a video for the new track, but no word yet on when it will drop. Just this week, she tweeted that she had recorded a duet for her forthcoming album, but she didn’t reveal with whom. In Seventeen she wrote that she wanted her new album to empower her fans. “With my new album, I’m hoping to provide inspiration for girls everywhere who are going through the same issues I’ve faced,” she said. “I think this will come through in a lot of the material.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Jay-Z Shares Sneak Peek Of Watch The Throne

Hov played more than a dozen tracks from his collabo with Kanye for MTV News on Thursday night. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Scott Wintrow/Getty Images NEW YORK — Jay-Z and Kanye West’s forthcoming album may be called Watch the Throne, but soon enough fans will be listening, not just looking, and it will have been worth the wait. On Thursday night, MTV News was among the shortlist of media outlets invited to get an early listen to power duo’s collaborative project. The listening session was held in the Mercer Hotel, where the New York Post previously reported that parts of the album were recorded. Though it was originally set to begin at 8 p.m., Jay-Z walked into the hotel lobby closer to 9 (word is he was at a Yankees game hoping to see Derek Jeter get his 3,000th hit). The group of journalists followed the rapper up to a suite that had been transformed into a recording studio. Seated in the rear of the room, wearing a Yankees snap-back hat and crisp, white shell-toe Adidas, Hova balanced a MacBook Pro in his lap. After asking those in attendance to introduce themselves, he got right into playing selections from the album, loudly. Standout tracks included a pair of songs that feature Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean . Jay-Z relayed that he reached out to Ocean after hearing his Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape and wanted him to contribute to his next solo album. After their initial work went well — Ocean appears on one of two songs Jay-Z revealed he has recorded for the solo LP — Hova invited the crooner to get down on Watch the Throne too. The only other guest on the album is Beyonc

Beanie Sigel Cried At State Property Reunion Concert

‘I would cry for a minute, I was dancing, I was happy,’ Sigel says on ‘RapFix Live’ of last weekend’s show. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Beanie Sigel Photo: MTV News As far as rap crews go, Philadelphia’s State Property were emerging as one of hip-hop’s most promising collectives until they were torn apart by business tiffs and legal drama. Signed to Roc-A-Fella Records, State Property and group leader Beanie Sigel lost steam after label co-CEOs Jay-Z and Damon Dash parted ways and Beans went on to serve a 10-month stint in prison that ended in 2005 . But this past weekend, SP reunited onstage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a show that Beanie said brought tears to his eyes. “The whole State Property was there, everybody: Chris, Neef, Oschino, Sparks, Freeway, Peedi Crack and me, all seven of us. That was love,” Sigel said during his visit to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “They all went out and I came out last. I was in the back. I didn’t know how to feel. I would cry for a minute, I was dancing, I was happy and then it was like, ‘My boys, man.’ ” Sigel told Sway that the SP reunion is now in full swing and, in addition to music, he’s working on a movie script for “State Property 3.” The first two “State Property” films were theatrical releases that became cult favorites and helped the group cement its brand in the mid-2000s. “I’m working on a script, ‘State Property 3,’ it’s about time,” Beans revealed before touching on the group’s musical plans. “When we got together, we had our meeting, our initial conversation about doing what we thought was necessary for us and for music, for everybody’s careers as State Property the group and solo careers.” As Sigel sees it, State Property would function as a collective, with each individual act pulling double duty as solo artists. To make his point, Beanie singled out Young Chris, who recently signed a deal with producer/songwriter Rico Love’s Division 1 label. “Everybody can do their own individual thing that they doing. Like Chris doing his thing with Division 1, he got a lot of good music that’s about to come through. “We make beautiful music together, all of us State Property,” Beans added. “We can stay out on our own and we can do us.” Are you looking forward to new music from State Property? Adele/ Alicia Keys Duet Would ‘Make History,’ Swizz Beatz Says

‘I just thought that, man, this would be a great moment for both of them,’ rapper/producer (and Keys’ husband) tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Swizz Beatz Photo: MTV News Swizz Beatz seems intent on getting his superstar wife, Alicia Keys , and British pop queen bee Adele into the studio very, very soon. In fact, when MTV News caught up with the rapper/producer, he said it seemed like the twosome would be hooking up sooner than fans might think. “We’re looking good, we’re looking good, we’re looking good,” he told MTV News quite emphatically in his green room at the Sounds Like Paper Concert at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, New York. The rumor of a possible collaboration between the two divas was actually started by the Haute Living rapper himself last month, and he appeared to get an enthusiastic co-sign from his lady love . While Swizz is quite adamant about making something happen with these two ladies, he’s not quite sure what that something should sound like. Since both ladies are famous for soulful-leaning pop, it seems like a natural fit. “I just know that you know greatness when you see greatness, and teaming two greats up together, it makes history,” he explained. “And I don’t even have to produce the track; I just want it to happen. She can produce the track, somebody else can produce the track.” Why is Swizz so amped up to make this happen? “I just thought that, man, this would be a great moment for both of them, because they have amazing styles and they both respect each other,” he said. “They’re fans of each other. So let’s make this good for music.” Would you like to hear an Adele/Alicia duet? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Adele Alicia Keys Swizz Beatz

Jay-Z And Kanye West’s Watch The Throne Is ‘Like, Damn!’

Big Sean, who witnessed the album being made, tells MTV News that even its intro blew him away. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Getty Images Big Sean has been watching the throne, literally. The Detroit rapper, whose Finally Famous snagged the #3 spot on next week’s Billboard albums chart, got to watch Jay-Z and Kanye West craft their highly anticipated Watch the Throne album , but don’t expect him to give away the goods. Sean did confirm to MTV News that he didn’t land a spot on the album — not that he’s stressing it. “No, I didn’t make it,” Sean said on the set of his “Marvin & Chardonnay” video shoot earlier this week. “But it’s all good. I was there while they were doing it, applauding them up.” The album was made available for pre-order on Monday, and though no release date has been officially confirmed, the ship date on customer receipts is listed as “2011-08-02.” Kanye West took to Twitter to plug the LP and name drop Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci, personality writing , “Watch The Throne cover by Riccardo Tisci. Pre-order album at www.watchthethrone.com .” Other than a few tweets from industry insiders like Hot 97 radio personality Angie Martinez , and positive reviews from artists like Swizz Beatz and CyHi the Prynce mum has been the world on Watch the Throne . So, when Sway pressed Sean, he too gave a glowing but brief review. “Man it’s just some good-ass songs on there,” he said. “I don’t know if they want me to give away any of the titles, but you’ll hear it. You’ll know what I’m talking about. Just even the intro is like, damn!” Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z
