Breezy and Buss hit the stage with ‘Look At Me Now,’ ‘She Ain’t You’ and ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Chris Brown onstage at the 2011 BET Awards Photo: Joe Scarnici/WireImage Chris Brown ‘s emotional performance at last year’s BET Awards turned out to be a turning point in the singer’s once-ailing career, and with his 2011 performance Breezy is reveling in his hard-won fame. Following a heartfelt, off-prompter intro by host Kevin Hart, Breezy kicked things off with his Michael Jackson-sampling jam “She Ain’t You.” The singer took the stage on a raised platform in the middle of the stage surrounded by a cluster of monitors splashed with psychedelic designs. Breezy worked the midtempo hit in an avant-garde grey suit with voluminous pant legs and a cape fashioned out a jacket. But the F.A.M.E. singer ditched the fashion-forward ensemble in favor of a black jumpsuit to helm his woozy, Diplo-produc ed banger, “Look At Me Now,” as a crew of dancers in similarly street black hoodies joined him on stage. Then Busta Rhymes emerged from a brightly lit cube flanked by dancers in eerie, transparent masks illuminated by blinking lights. The Back On My B.S. lyricist wowed the Shrine with his legendary, breathless, rapid-fire flow — much of which was obscured by super-cautious censors — sporting a unique, black jacket with enormous, ridged sleeves. After ripping his verse, the MC dropped the mic and walked off. Breezy took back the stage for his F.A.M.E. cut “Paper, Scissors, Rock,” busting out some agile choreography, and finishing up the performance with an athletic flip off the stage. When speaking to MTV News earlier this year about how the all-star collabo came together, beatsmith Afrojack gave snaps to Busta’s hypnotic flow . “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he said. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [mimics Busta’s rapid flow], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” The bigwigs at BET are also clearly feeling Breezy’s chart-topper. “Look At Me Now” took the Best Collaboration award directly after the set. Graves’ disease is the most common form of hyperthyroidism, occurring when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland and causes it to overproduce the hormone thyroxine. Band’s new clip is an artfully subtle affair, much like their new album, If Not Now, When? By James Montgomery Incubus’ Brandon Boyd in the “Promises, Promises” video Photo: Sony Music Entertainment Incubus ‘ brand-new “Promises, Promises” video is a thing of beautiful simplicity — little more than the band performing in and around projected images, dancing lights and slowly undulating colors. To say it’s a departure from the rocket-launcher guitars and skittering electro frippery of their past is a bit of an understatement; then again, pretty much everything about Incubus these days — especially their upcoming If Not Now, When? album — is a departure. An intentional one, of course. Which is part of the reason they chose “Promises” as the proper first single from When?, which is due July 12. It represents everything they hoped to achieve with the new album. “It’s about whittling down the process to really simple forms, finding real beauty in stark simplicity, allowing for space to be as big a part of the music as the notes,” guitarist Mike Einziger told MTV News. “This album feels spacious to me, there’s a lot air in the album. In our previous albums, we’ve tried to fit as many notes as humanly possible into the music and I think the idea of writing something that can stand on its own was a core theme of the album.” And those ideals extended to frontman Brandon Boyd’s lyrics too. In “Promises,” he tells the story of a woman who shields herself from the world through barriers, both real and imagined. In the video, they’re represented in the form of projections that envelop the band — but in the song itself, well, they’re mostly alluded to. Which was Boyd’s goal all along. “I realized that the greatest challenge was in saying more in less space, with less notes, less lyrics. Can you create a thought that can shatter something, or shake somebody up, without having to spell the whole thing out for them?” he said. “You introduce these ideas and then create gaps, so there’s a lot of space on this record. And, this is just my humble opinion, but I think there is a grace to this album, that we’ve never really stumbled onto before, and I think I’m the most excited because of that.” What do you think of the “Promises, Promises” video? The rapper/producer released a string of offbeat smash hits and landmark music videos in the late 1990s and early 2000s that stretched from her breakthrough single “The Rain” in 1997 to 2001’s “Get Ur Freak On” and 2002’s “Work It.” But after a couple of softer-selling efforts in the mid 2000s, Elliott seemed to fall off the radar. Now the increasingly reclusive MC has explained why her long-promised comeback album, Block Party, has been so long in coming and where she’s been for the past three years. The 39-year-old Grammy winner told People magazine that she’s battling the autoimmune disorder Graves’ disease. “You live with it for the rest of your life,” Elliott said. Elliott was diagnosed with the disease in 2008, and she’s suffered from a litany of effects, including a loss of some motor skills, dizzy spells, lumps in her throat, mood swings, hair loss, a fast heart rate and bulging eyes. She underwent radiation treatment, has been taking medication and said she’s now feeling better. The disease affects the thyroid gland, whose hormones regulate the body’s metabolism and affect mood, weight and energy. It causes hyperthyroidism, which produces an excess of the thyroid hormone, causing the symptoms Elliott discussed, as well as anxiety, double vision and muscle weakness. Though the symptoms are uncomfortable, when caught early and treated, long-term health effects can be avoided. The weakness was so bad, Elliott said , that she nearly crashed her car because she couldn’t press down on the brake, and she could hardly even hold a pen in her hand. “I’m 30 pounds lighter because I’ve been exercising,” said Elliott, who will be the first subject of the upcoming season of VH1’s “Behind the Music” biography series on June 29. “My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months.” Related Artists Missy Elliott

We’re desperately in need of some hard-R laughs, a few gross-out moments that make us cringe, and the reminder that as crazy as we might be, we’re not nearly as loco as the folks we’re watching onscreen. Thus, we say thanks to “Bad Teacher” as it floats, on a comedic cloud of profanity and penis jokes, into theaters. Cameron Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey, an educator less concerned with math lessons than she is in smoking pot and calculating her way into marriage with any filthy-rich doofus. She meets the perfect mark in Justin Timberlake’s Scott Delacorte, a substitute teacher and a guy so freaking nice there’s got be something wrong with him. And then we have Jason Segel’s sly gym teacher; even though he’s got the hots for Halsey, his paycheck doesn’t have nearly enough digits to entice the leggy blonde. But all this is just the setup. The punch comes in a series of outlandish events that, if we were to reveal them here, would just spoil the fun. What we can do is tell you everything you need to know about “Bad Teacher” before hitting the multiplex this weekend. That’s where our cheat sheet comes into play. Getting Ready for Class News of the film, penned by “Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, broke in December of 2009. Diaz had signed on , but the rest of the cast had yet to be filled out. That changed a few months later, when Timberlake and Segel hopped aboard . Though Diaz had formerly dated JT, the actress had no qualms about stepping in front of the camera with him. “He’s the best person for the job. He’s going to be hilarious,” she said. “He’s clearly a very talented comedian; look at his ‘Saturday Night Live’ [skits]. He’s fantastic. He’s going to be so great.” School’s in Session Filming kicked off in March. Nearly a year later, a truly filthy red-band trailer popped up online, giving us a very clear idea of how truly terrible a teacher Diaz would be: “Are you f—ing kidding me?” she writes on a student’s test. While the comedy’s raunchiness was no surprise, Timberlake’s weirdo of a sub certainly was. As Diaz later explained to us , “He gives us a character that you have not seen yet before — not just him, but pretty much anyone. It’s just a very interesting character and a lot of fun to watch. By the end of it, you’re like, ‘What is up with that dude?’ It’s hilarious.” The Final Exam As part of our Summer Movie Preview Week, we debuted an exclusive photo of Diaz getting ready for a fundraising car wash unlike any that you might recall from your school days and also sat down for a chat with the woman herself. “She’s miserable. She’s not happy with her world, and she doesn’t pretend that she is,” Diaz said of her character. “Her pain is real. She’s living a very painful existence, so there’s no humor to her in this.” Sure, she’s a woman in pain. But there’s also something liberating about the way she just doesn’t give a hoot about anything. “I think that’s why people love Elizabeth,” Diaz told us at the film’s premiere in New York City. “It’s because everyone wants to be her, even for an hour, maybe a day. If you get away with a week — oh my gosh! I got to play her for six weeks. So yeah, it was a lot of fun.” “The first 30 pages, I’m like, ‘I am not playing this. There is no way I can play this character. There [are] no redeeming qualities to this character,’ ” she recalled of the script in an earlier chat. “And by the end of it, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is genius! There’s no redeeming qualities to this character!’ We got to the end of the script, and we’re not apologizing for anything she said.
