Chris Brown/ Drake Bar Brawl: Meek Mill Speaks Out

‘I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle, and I was there,’ MMG rapper tells XXL of last week’s club fight. By Nadeska Alexis Meek Mill Photo: Chris Brown’s and Drake’s reps have issued statements about the NYC brawl between their entourages last week, but so far, the only direct words from the artists themselves have been via Twitter. Brown and MMG rapper Meek Mill have both tweeted about the incident in the past few days, but now Meek is finally speaking up about what he saw in the club that night as he stood next to Drake. In an interview with XXL, Meek was asked if he threw a bottle during the melee, which left Chris Brown, his bodyguard and several club patrons wounded. “F— no,” the Philly rapper responded, adding that Drake and Brown didn’t either. “Chris and Drake, them two was there, but it’s other people that be around that take sh– to the next level,” he said. “Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of sh–. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle, and I was there.” In the hours following the brawl, Meek’s brief tweets didn’t add any clarity to the situation. He began with the coy line, “It wasn’t me…. (shaggy voice) lol,” and later responded to messages from Roscoe Dash, who blasted him along with Drake and Brown for fighting. Meek snapped back, “You gotta chill b4 you b tweeting my name in some sh– i wasn’t even really in! Stay in ya lane!” Later in the day, Brown — who had already deleted his initial tweets and the photo of his injury, which he posted right after the brawl — sent a follow up message, writing, “Me and @MeekMill ain’t on that bullsh–. Real respect Real….” Although the statement seemed odd, right after reports that Meek had played a role in instigating the fight, Meek confirmed to XXL that things were all good between him and Brown. “What [Brown] tweeted was just that me and Meek Mill ain’t got no problem,” he said. “I talked to him immediately after that, on the phone afterwards, like immediately. There’s nothing there, this-that-and-the-third. Chris Brown be in clubs. He be around situations like this. Things get out of hand. That don’t mean it’s out of hand with me and him or whoever, not even him and Drake.” Drake made his first public appearance since the brawl at his Club Paradise Tour stop in New York on Saturday night, bringing Meek along with him, but he made no real statement on what went down last week. Instead, he told fans that he’d had a rough couple of days but was in a much better mood by the time he hit the stage. Details from that night are still being revealed. The nightclub where the incident took place was shuttered this weekend, and clubgoers present at the time are reporting injuries from the brawl . Related Artists Meek Mill Chris Brown Drake

Rihanna To Sit Down With Oprah On ‘Next Chapter’

Singer will appear on the show in August, Winfrey announces on Twitter. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Oprah Winfrey is following up her sit-down with the Kardashians and 50 Cent with another pop-culture superstar interview. The talk show maven took to her Twitter on Monday (June 18) to confirm that Rihanna would appear on an upcoming episode of her OWN talk show, “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” Oprah didn’t have an exact date for the interview, but did note that it would all go down in August. A rep for OWN hadn’t responded to MTV News’ request for further information at press time. Rihanna appeared on Winfrey’s talk show back in January 2010 , where she performed Bob Marley’s classic “Redemption Song” to benefit the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Oprah also dedicated an entire episode of her talk show to the issue of domestic violence one year before in March 2009 . The episode was in part inspired by the 2009 assault of Rihanna by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. While Ri didn’t appear on the episode, Winfrey did have a message for young women who find themselves in abusive relationships. “If you go back with a man who hits you, it’s because you don’t think you’re worthy of being with a man who won’t,” Winfrey said during the episode. “I’ve said before, ‘Love doesn’t hurt, and if a man hits you once, he will hit you again.’ ” Given all the headlines that Rihanna has found herself in recently, including reconnecting with Brown on several tracks earlier this year and having her name tossed around as one of the reasons why Drake and Breezy got into a fight last week in New York City, the singer and the talk-show host should have some interesting talking points. In addition to her newly announced interview with Winfrey, Rihanna also made headlines on Monday thanks to her brand-new tattoo. Over the weekend, she tweeted out a photo of her new ankle tattoo. The tat is that of a falcon shaped somewhat like a handgun. “Falcon: a light that shines in the darkness! Never close their eyes during sleep,” she tweeted on Saturday. It joins her many, many tattoos, several of which are actually gun images . What questions do you hope Oprah asks Rihanna? Leave your comment below! Justin Bieber: A ‘Humble’ Evolution From My World To Believe

Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, opens up to MTV News about the singer before ‘Bieber Live’ airs Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: In the lead-up to the release of Justin Bieber ‘s album Believe , there has been a lot of talk about how much the 18-year-old has grown up since he dropped his first EP, My World, back in 2009. Sure, he is actually older, but the conversation has also been focused on how his music sounds more mature. He no longer seems to be crafting sugary-sweet tracks like “Baby.” The pop star will celebrate his mature new album during “Bieber Live,” airing Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Bieber will join Sway and 100 lucky fans for an interview and a pair of performances. Adding to his growth is the fact that in the two and a half years since that debut release, Bieber has quite literally done it all. He’s toured the world (several times over), topped the charts, won a lot of awards, fallen in love, become a boss to his own artist , owned the box office, befriended some of the biggest MCs in the game, vowed to “Never Say Never” and, yes, became legal. As tiring as it may sound to be Justin Bieber, his manager, Scooter Braun, notes that when the singer sat down to make the album, he didn’t want to rush it or be lazy about it. He wanted it to be perfect. His experiences are not only helping shape him as an artist but also helping him mature as one. “You know, I think a lot of times with big superstars, they don’t always deliver on that big album. They don’t meet the expectation … sometimes it’s because they’re superstars,” Braun explained to MTV News. “Maybe they think they know it all and they don’t want to listen to anyone else’s input, and sometimes that works and sometimes that doesn’t. “Justin was really humble about this,” he continued. “He probably wrote 200 songs and we just kept working and working and narrowing it down. And there were so many records that didn’t even make it that we’ll save for something else. I think when it was all said and done, there wasn’t one person who listened to that album all the whole way through and thought that we didn’t have something special and really great and something that didn’t just reach the teenagers, but everyone — without losing the teenagers.” The album certainly has been teased for quite some time. The buzz began to really pick up around the time of the release of his holiday album in 2011, when he dropped the name Justin Timberlake as his template for career evolution, setting the bar quite high. “I’m proudest of Justin with this album ’cause I think he delivered,” Braun said. “For a superstar to deliver means a lot.” Others who worked with Bieber on the release told MTV News during the recording process that it was important for him to make music that would help expand his brand beyond the tween and teen market. A big part of Bieber’s musical evolution, however, is about making sure no one gets alienated. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” his vocal producer, Kuk Harrell , told MTV News back in November. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” That mission to help Bieber make the right choices as an adult artist was certainly priority number one when Bieber hit the studio with Mike Posner to work on the album’s lead single, “Boyfriend.” “I think our goal was to make something that me and my friends could listen to in the car,” Posner explained in March. “I think we’ve all known Justin since he was 13, and that’s not the kid I was in the studio with anymore. He’s an 18-year-old. He skateboards with Lil Wayne and hangs out with Lil Twist. Those are his homies. And he listens to hip-hop and he’s a really cool kid. He’s not like a corny guy. “So I wanted to make something that reflected who he is now and who he is going to continue to be,” Posner continued. “I think people have been waiting [for] when he’s going to turn that corner, and the time is now.” Listening to his album, it’s clear that Bieber is trying out new sounds, from dance to R&B and everything in between. But he also just plain sounds different. His voice is deeper than it was when he first started making music. That register change is something he commented on in a recent interview with MTV News. “It’s really deep,” he joked. “The thing is, I’d always put out random songs and give it to my fans, and when my voice was changing I was doing that. So they didn’t randomly just hear [it and go], ‘He’s got a deep voice now.’ It was gradual. They didn’t realize it that much. It just kind of happened. The tone is still the same. It’s just deeper and sexier.” In the end, while it may seem like he’s taking a cut from another pop star named Justin , Bieber is actually focused on following yet another megastar’s template for success. “He’s growing and so is his music,” Braun said. “And I don’t think he’s transitioning and losing any fans. I think he’s just growing. We always study Michael Jackson and the thing I loved about his career is he never lost that 2-year-old that bounced to his music. But at the same time, you’d go to a club and there were adults bouncing also. And I think that’s what we want to do with Justin.” Don’t miss “Bieber Live” on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by “MTV First: Katy Perry” at 7:53 p.m., when Katy will debut her “Wide Awake” music video. Radiohead Pay Tribute To Drum Tech Killed In Stage Collapse

Band’s drummer, Philip Selway, says group is ‘shattered’ by death of friend Scott Johnson. By Gil Kaufman The collapsed section of stage at Toronto’s Downsview Park Photo: A day after a stage collapse
killed one person an injured three more, Radiohead issued a statement about the accident that caused the cancellation of their show at Toronto’s Downsview Park. The victim has been identified as the band’s drum tech, Scott Johnson, 33, a native of Doncaster, England. According to the Toronto Star , Johnson sustained a “crushing injury’ when the stage collapse while he and other members of the band’s crew were setting up the stage for the show. The other three crew members were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Radiohead drummer Philip Selway issued a statement on Sunday paying tribute to Johnson. ” We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague,” he wrote. “He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.” The Star reported that three inspectors and two engineers from the Ministry of Labour scoured the accident scene on Sunday in search of the cause of the collapse. A spokesperson said the investigation is “fairly complex” and some industry professionals wondering what could have caused the incident, which occurred on an otherwise nice, sunny day with light winds. The incident is the latest in a string of stage collapses over the past year, which include a death at the Bluesfest in Ottawa last July, six deaths at a Sugarland concert
in Indianapolis in August and five deaths in Belgium
after a storm swept in and toppled a stage at the Pukkelpop Festival. Related Artists Radiohead

Drake Moves Past Bar Brawl With Help From The Weeknd, Dipset

Drake brushes off Chris Brown drama at New York show with all-star lineup including A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes and 2 Chainz. By Nadeska Alexis The Weeknd and Drake perform at New York’s Jones Beach on Saturday Photo: WANTAGH, New York — Drake hit the stage at the Nikon Theater in Jones Beach on Saturday night for his first public appearance since the now-infamous club brawl with Chris Brown , and except for a passing reference to the incident, the show went on with extra fuel from special guests like the Weeknd and Dipset. After opening sets from French Montana, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Waka Flocka Flame and J. Cole, Drake kicked things off with his Take Care tracks “Lord Knows” and “Underground Kings.” He formally introduced his crowd to the “greatest club in the world,” and assured them that no afterparty could measure up to what he had in store for the night, since he’d brought out “every single n—a that you wanna hear.” Cue “Crew Love” and an appearance from Drizzy’s Toronto pal the Weeknd, who momentarily sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the first in a chain of surprise guests. In addition to summoning Waka, Meek, 2 Chainz and French Montana back to the stage for features, Drake also brought out his Cash Money labelmate Busta Rhymes to perform the throwback “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See,” while A$AP Rocky and his mob dropped in as well. It wasn’t until Drake performed his soul-baring single “Marvin’s Room” that he finally made a blatant reference to the controversy surrounding the Chris Brown incident. He told the audience that he was in a great mood, despite the last few nights being difficult. Once he got that off his chest, he continued the show with an appearance from Jamaican dancehall star Mavado, who performed his own single “I’m So Special.” Despite earlier rumors that Drake might be arrested before the end of the night,  the YMCMB rapper was calm and cool, focused only on delivering a night to remember. He saved his biggest stunt for the final minutes of the show, bringing Jim Jones onstage to perform his hit “We Fly High,” followed by Juelz Santana with “Dipset (Santana’s Town)” and finally, Cam’ron. If having A$AP’s crew on the bill wasn’t enough shine for Harlem, Drake managed to get all three members of Dipset on stage with him for a memorable moment as they performed “Salute.” While details are still being revealed about the club altercation Wednesday night, Drake did his best to brush off the drama and stay focused on the music. This weekend, MTV News caught up with Cash Money CEO Birdman in Atlanta, where he threw his full support behind Drake. “To me, Drizzy ain’t did nothin’ wrong, he ain’t done nothin’ wrong to nobody,” Birdman said.  “He just doin’ great music. He’s not a reckless guy out there just wildin’ out; he’s a humble kid makin’ great music.” Related Artists Drake The Weeknd

Radiohead Stage Collapse Kills One

Accident in Toronto left two others injured. All three men were likely members of Radiohead’s tour crew. By Jonathan Goldner The collapsed section of stage at Toronto’s Downsview Park Photo: A massive section of ironwork collapsed at Toronto’s Downsview Park Saturday afternoon prior to Radiohead ‘s planned show there, leaving one dead and three injured. According to Toronto Police, the deceased man was in his thirties. Given that the show was not yet open to the audience, he was likely a member of Radiohead’s tour crew. The man’s name is not yet being released until such time as police are able to notify his family. Two of the injured were treated and released with minor injuries. The third, 45 years old, sustained a serious, but not life-threatening injury to his head. It’s not clear if the victims were working on the elevated metalwork or on the stage level when the collapse occurred. So far Radiohead’s only comment has been via their Twitter, which posted what appears to be a hastily written message just after 5 pm ET. “Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight’s at downsview park tonight has been cancelled. Fans are advised not to make their way to the venue.” The CBC spoke to several concessionaires who were on scene at the time of the accident. Alexandra Mihan reported a sound like fireworks, then hearing screaming and gasping. “We turned around, and the entire top of the stage has just collapsed. All of the metalwork and all of the screens had just kind of folded over on top of each other.” Photos and videos making their way across the Internet on Saturday painted a similarly grim picture. Beer vendor Jeff Cole added, “It’s very, very fortunate that the gates weren’t open, because it would have been pandemonium.” Related Artists Radiohead

‘He’s not a reckless guy out there just wildin’ out,’ Cash Money CEO tells MTV News after Drizzy’s altercation with Chris Brown. By Rob Markman Birdman in Atlanta on Friday Photo: ATLANTA — No matter the drama, Cash Money CEO Bryan “Birdman” Williams is riding with his artists. Never one to indulge in rap beef, on Friday (June 15) during an interview with MTV News, Stunna made it clear that he is in full support of Drake in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s brawl in a New York City nightclub that involved Chris Brown and members of their respective crews. “Well, to me, I think n—as got Drake twisted. A lot of n—as be playin’, pitty-pattin’ with Drake. I don’t like that sh–, period,” Birdman said to us in an exclusive interview. “Drake is one of us, so if you f—in’ with Drake, you f—in’ with us, period!” Birdman wasn’t in attendance when the fight broke out at W.I.P. in NYC, but firmly believes the Take Care MC did nothing wrong. Drake alleges he wasn’t involved in the melee, which left a number of people injured including one of Brown’s bodyguards and NBA player Tony Parker. “To me, Drizzy ain’t did nothin’ wrong, he ain’t done nothin’ wrong to nobody. He just doin’ great music,” Bird said in defense of his artist. “He’s not a reckless guy out there just wildin’ out; he’s a humble kid makin’ great music.” Drake Vows To Outdo Summer Jam At New York Show It’s no secret that the #1 Stunna is about his money, and to him, beef is bad for business. “We never been a brand to carry ourselves in any foul manner. None of us, none of the acts,” he said of his Cash Money roster. “We’ve been doin’ this, we want to do this for another 20 years.” Still, the CM CEO understands how quickly things can get out of hand. He recalls a time where shootings weren’t uncommon between warring factions but now sees those types of altercations as a thing of the past. “It’s a different era, and we don’t promote that, we’re not about that, but I think sometimes sh– get outta hand, and you just gotta be ready for it,” he said. “We did enough of that, so these n—as ain’t got to do it.” On Saturday (June 16), rumors of an imminent Drake arrest were circulating on the Net but an NYPD official confirmed to MTV News that were “no arrests” looming, adding that an “investigation is ongoing.” Related Artists Birdman Drake Chris Brown

Drake Vows To Outdo Summer Jam At New York Show

‘They f—ed up Summer Jam, so I’m just gonna do Summer Jam how it’s supposed to go,’ Drizzy tells Scoob Doo about Club Paradise Tour stop. By Nadeska Alexis Drake Photo: Drake and Nicki Minaj have been making controversial headlines following a club brawl and a canceled Summer Jam performance , respectively, but when Drake’s Club Paradise Tour touches down in New York on Saturday, Team YMCMB will be back in full force, minus the controversy. On Wednesday night, Drake visited Sin City Cabaret in the Bronx, New York, for Maybach Music Group’s Self Made Vol. 2 listening session, after which he revealed exclusively to DJ Scoob Doo’s new website BreadOverBed that he had a few surprises in store for his New York show. “They f—ed up Summer Jam, so I’m just gonna do Summer Jam how it’s supposed to go,” Drake told Scoob, referencing Lil Wayne’s decision to pull Young Money out of the show’s lineup after offensive remarks were directed toward Nicki Minaj. “I’ve got everyone you would want to see, plus people that you wouldn’t expect to see.” Thus far, Drake’s tour roster includes Meek Mill, 2 Chainz, J. Cole, Waka Flocka Flame and French Montana, not to mention guest appearances from T.I., Rick Ross and Future, so it seems likely that additional members from his YMCMB family will join him on the bill Saturday. During a heated radio interview with Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex following her canceled Summer Jam set, Minaj promised fans that she would do a free show in New York to make up for the disappointment. Could an appearance at Drake’s show be on her agenda as well? Before Minaj and crew pulled out of the lineup, Lil Wayne was rumored to be one of her guests, along with surprise appearances from Nas and Lauryn Hill. As Drake gears up for his concert, he’s still dealing with some fallout from a club brawl with Chris Brown in New York on Wednesday night, but the show must go on. Stayed tuned to MTV News and RapFix.MTV.com for continued coverage on Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. Related Artists Drake
