By Kara Warner TV On The Radio’s Gerard Smith Photo: Michael Lavine TV On The Radio bassist Gerard Smith died Wednesday (April 20) at age 34 after his battle with lung cancer , the band announced on its website . “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” the band’s statement reads. “Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.” Smith’s death comes just over a month after it was announced that he was battling cancer; TV on the Radio had just completed recording sessions for their latest album, Nine Types of Light. At the time, the band said that while Smith would not be able to participate in the upcoming tour, they were hopeful that he would be able to fight the disease entirely, citing promising results from treatment and Smith’s “legendarily willful disposition” as reasons for their optimistic outlook. Smith had been in the band since 2005 and was a contributor to their third and fourth albums, the acclaimed 2006 effort Return to Cookie Mountain and 2008’s Dear Science. The group has canceled its concerts for the next few days, starting Wednesday in Detroit. According to their website, the band will release more information when it becomes available. Nine Types of Light, which has been receiving great reviews since its release last week, marks a return to action for the experimental rock group, which announced a yearlong hiatus in late 2009 in order to decompress from nearly a year on the road promoting Science. Gaga and Madonna poked fun at pop-star rivalries during the sketch “Deep House Dish,” where they had a catfight and nearly kissed. That night, Gaga performed two songs: a high-concept take on “Paparazzi” and a piano-driven performance of her dance track “LoveGame.” She later appeared in a sketch alongside Andy Samberg, when both of them wore her famous bubble dress. Being that this latest appearance comes just as Gaga is dropping her May 23 album release Born This Way, there’s a good chance she’ll perform lead singles “Born This Way” and “Judas.” Or, as she’s known to do, she might just dazzle fans with a brand-new track. Star is focusing on music career after leaving treatment for eating disorder and self-mutilation. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage On Tuesday, fans were shocked to learn that Demi Lovato would no longer be the star of her hit Disney series “Sonny With a Chance.” She came to the decision after realizing that “being in front of a camera would make me nervous.” The singer recently left a treatment center to deal with some personal issues, including an eating disorder and self-mutilation. Now that Lovato is focused on staying healthy, she is also focusing on the next stage of her career. She took to Twitter late Tuesday to thank her fans for standing by her through her recent personal problems. “Thank you all so much for your support with the decisions I’ve decided to make with my career. I love you guys,” she wrote. ” ‘Sonny’ was a chapter in my life I will be forever grateful for. Thank you all for watching. Can’t wait to see the new format for ‘So Random’!” She even thanked her “Sonny” co-star Tiffany Thornton, who will stay on for the “Sonny” spin-off “So Random.” After Thornton tweeted , “I couldn’t be more proud of the woman you’ve become these past 6 months,” Lovato welcomed the warm words, tweeting back, “I love you so much T. and I miss ALL of you. By Jocelyn Vena “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” DVD Photo: Paramount On Wednesday (March 30), Justin Bieber shared with his fans the DVD release date for his flick, “Never Say Never.” So, when will fans be able to experience Bieber in 3-D in the comfort of their own homes? “So here is the big news they were waiting for me to announce to u once off stage … Thanks to everyone for seeing #NSN3D around the world! so we are … OFFICIALLY getting #NEVERSAYNEVER3D to Blu-ray & DVD May13th,” he tweeted . “Preorder NOW.” He also had another special announcement for a few lucky fans who purchase a special version of the flick, adding, “And I’m signing some for my fans! #MUCHLOVE.” Aside from what fans already saw in theaters, the Blu-ray/DVD combo features a dance-off between Bieber and his crew, the full-length performance of “Favorite Girl,” Bieber’s team surprising fans with free tickets and a sendoff for JB’s old swoop hairstyle. Fans already came out to see the flick when it hit theaters in February, helping to solidify its status as one of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time . This will mark the third release for the film, which hit theaters twice already . Regarding the film’s message, Bieber explained to MTV News , “People didn’t really know, they didn’t understand that I’ve been playing music ever since I was born, and it’s always been in me. And this movie is really going to show that I’m not just some packaged thing that some A&R put together. It was actually just me living my dream and just making music. “Fans will be really excited to see that I’m just a regular 16-year-old having fun, just living my dream,” he said. “And it’s possible for anyone to live theirs.” The film shows Bieber skillfully playing piano, drums and guitar. It is part concert film, part documentary, complete with interviews from some of the people closest to the teen phenom. ‘For the past 10 years, I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food,’ Disney star confides in new ABC News interview. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: John Shearer/WireImage Demi Lovato surprised everyone when she quit her tour with the Jonas Brothers last fall to seek treatment for ” emotional and physical issues .” She recently opened up about those personal issues, which back then caused much speculation about exactly what ailed her, in a new interview with ABC News . Lovato also confirmed that she will no longer be starring in her TV show, “Sonny With a Chance.” “I’ve spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I’ve never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life afterwards,” she said. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.’ “I developed an eating disorder, and that’s kind of what I’ve been dealing with ever since. I was compulsively overeating when I was 8 years old,” she continued. “So, I guess, for the past 10 years, I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food.” Her eating disorder also gave way to self-mutilation. In the interview, which airs on ” Good Morning America ” and “20/20” on Friday, the Disney star says she began cutting herself at age 11. “It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body,” she told Robin Roberts. “I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself.” The emotional ups and downs came to a head last summer while on tour with the Jonas Brothers. “I was performing concerts on an empty stomach,” she said. “I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me.” She is referring to an incident in which Lovato reportedly got into a physical altercation with one of the dancers on the tour. An intervention was staged following that incident, and she entered treatment. “I take 100 percent, full responsibility. I feel horrible. [She] was my friend,” she said. “They sat me down and said, ‘You can’t live like this.’ ” She recalled that once she entered the facility, “For the first time in my life, I started to feel.” Her sister and her fans acted as her strength as she dealt with the issues she had kept quiet for a decade. “A picture of my little sister [Madison], on my little bulletin board, was one of the main things that kept me going,” she said. “I just kept thinking, ‘OK, set this example for your little sister,’ ” she explained. “The real reason why I’m sitting down with you is to open up the eyes of so many young girls, that it doesn’t have to be this way.” The same day the preview for the ABC News interview hit the Web, it was announced that Lovato would be leaving her Disney show, “Sonny With a Chance.” “It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music,” Lovato told People.com . “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended, but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.” “I don’t think going back to ‘Sonny’ would be healthy for my recovery,” she added. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.” A rep for the show confirms her decision and the network is supporting Lovato’s future endeavors, which include recording for Disney’s record label. “We respect Demi’s decision to focus full-time on her music and not immediately return to her acting career,” a rep explained. “She is a talented young woman and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato
