Glee is on hiatus until April 12. But a couple random celebrities have given fans of this Fox series a couple things to buzz over during the break. First, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl went off on the show, echoing the sentiments of King of Leon and a couple other artists that have taken exception to creator Ryan Murphy’s insistence over all bands giving the show rights to their music. Grohl cursed a lot in his assessment of this stance. Then, former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson reacted to a male-on-male kiss by accusing to Glee of pushing an agenda of ” one-way tolerance .” We’ve summarized both feuds in this edition of The Pulse… The Pulse: Glee Scandal Alert! By James Montgomery Panic! at the Disco Photo: MTV News Panic! at the Disco officially return Tuesday with Vices & Virtues, their first album in three years and the first since the departure of Ryan Ross and Jon Walker . But, of course, if you’re a fan, you probably already knew both of those things. What fans may not know is the message behind “The Overture,” the mini-movie teaser the band posted earlier this month. Opening with a scene of frontman Brendon Urie telling two shadowy specters — who most assume represent Ross and Walker — “I’m gonna miss you guys … looks like we’re going to have to part ways” and featuring Panic! and a host of fantastical characters embarking on a journey (to points unknown), most seem to assume the clip represents the band putting their past to bed and heading out into the future. And while those assumptions are (in part) correct, the way Urie and drummer Spencer Smith see it, “The Overture” (and, really, most of Vices & Virtues ) is about something else entirely: the obstacles they overcame just to make it to this point. “I guess the entire theme to be covered in a word would be ‘perseverance.’ It’s really learning to drop your baggage and keep pressing forward with what you want to do. And having the passion but also the perseverance,” Urie told MTV News. “So we’re gathering up people [and] we’re not really sure where we’re going, and how it’s going to be, how the trip’s going to be, but that’s not the point. You never really know how it’s going to end up, and that was important for us to get that message out, too, because we’ve learned that in the past couple of years.” While Urie and Smith were mum about the identities of those two darkened figures at the beginning of the video, it’s safe to speculate that they are, in fact, Ross and Walker. But they also represent basically everything Panic! at the Disco has had to endure ever since they burst onto the scene in 2005 with A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out — the labels, the gossip and, yes, the almost-breakup. Because, like everything the band does these days, they’re parting ways with the past. “[The figures are] mostly a metaphor [for] that idea of what we thought we were in the past, learning to just let that go and pushing forward with the ideas we knew we wanted to do for this record,” Urie said. Band organized an impromptu 12-hour charity event Saturday at South by Southwest. By James Montgomery Hanson Photo: Mark Mainz/ Getty Images On Saturday, with less than a day of preparation, Hanson somehow managed to pull off a 12-hour live-stream benefit for the earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts in Japan . They followed that up with an early (like, 12:20 a.m. early) morning performance on Sunday at South by Southwest. And on Monday, they finally took a minute to reflect on what turned out to be a very eventful weekend. “The whole thing was a labor of love … in the sense of nobody’s really getting anything out of it, other than our desire to give and give of ourselves. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it,” Zac Hanson told MTV News. “The people that put themselves out for this — and most of them will not really get the credit — the work that was done by the people that work for us, the friends and the colleagues that threw down and just started calling musicians they knew … we’re still having people saying they want to help out. It still continues, even though the first live broadcast is over.” The SXSW 4 Japan benefit started with the goal of raising $100,000 for the Red Cross’ disaster recovery efforts, and Zac Hanson was happy to report that not only did he and his brothers achieve that goal, they blew right past it. Though, after having some time to think back on the event, he’s more amazed by the sheer effort everyone put out to help make the broadcast a reality. “For me, I feel like we really gave as much as we could. Nobody held anything back. I think we really accomplished something. The money that was raised, the $100,000-plus and all the text donations … at the end, that is a meaningful amount of money, but … it’s more about that we did something,” he said. “And I think the feeling of saying to the people of Japan, ‘Look, we’ve got your backs, we’re here, we’re looking out for you, we’re here when you need us,’ I feel proud of everyone who was involved.” Hanson said the next step is compiling all the musical performances — and, as he put it, there is “an insane amount of music” — into a digital album that can be downloaded by fans, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. And he added that, though he’s proud of every single person who helped out in some way, there’s still plenty more to be done. In fact, he and his brothers would’ve kept going, if not for that pesky need for sleep. “We all finally crashed at around 2 or 3 in the morning,” he laughed. “And then we slept for 12 straight hours.” Donations for the Red Cross can still be made through the SXSW 4 Japan site or by texting REDCROSS to 90999. Well, fans still might be wondering after they check out the clip Perry shared Monday (March 21), but at least they’ll know what this extraterrestrial’s spacecraft looks like. She tweeted a teaser to the video, which will feature a cameo from Kanye West , who drops a few bars on the song. Her message on the tweet simply reads: “EXTRATRESSTRIALS ARE COMING.” In the 19-second teaser , an orb-shaped UFO drops from the sky. Then the clip, which features the booming opening beats of the spacey dance track, tells fans the video will be “Landing March 31.” This is the second look Perry has shared with fans from the video, steered by Floria Sigismondi, who has directed videos for Christina Aguilera, Marilyn Manson and the White Stripes, and directed Kristen Stewart in “The Runaways.” In the previously released photo , West appears in street clothes while Perry is dressed up perhaps as the alien character she sings about in the song, complete with pastel-colored makeup and a giant braided headpiece. The Detroit MC and 2010 XXL Freshmen 10 alum will be fresh from rocking South by Southwest this past weekend with Jay-Z and his G.O.O.D Music family, including mentor Kanye West. Big Sean first made a name for himself about four years ago when his song “Getcha Some” was a standout on West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing mixtape. After catching Yeezy at a radio station and impressing him with an impromptu audition, Sean passed on a scholarship to Michigan State University to tour with West and eventually signed with the Chicago rapper’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint in 2007. Since then, Sean has released three volumes of his Finally Famous mixtapes ( The Mixtape, U Know Big Sean and BIG ) to keep his fans satiated, and he was also a regular on West’s G.O.O.D. Friday music leaks. After a few delays, Sean’s long-in-the-making debut album, Finally Famous: The Album, has an official release date of May 3. Crooner is tentatively set to be laid to rest Saturday, followed Sunday by a DJ Quik-hosted benefit. Nate Dogg died last week of yet-undetermined causes. The “Regulate” star suffered two strokes in recent years and never fully recovered from the setbacks brought on by the second one, his manager, Rod McGrew , told the media. The crooner is tentatively set to be laid to rest this Saturday with a ceremony preceding the event at the Long Beach Airport, which will be open to fans, according to the family friend. The next day, another tentative event is in the works: a memorial benefit at the Los Angeles Convention Center hosted by DJ Quik. McGrew did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment about the events; a representative for Quik was unable to confirm the information when we contacted him. Warren G, who teamed with Nate Dogg for his hit “Regulate,” spoke to MTV News about his friend’s death following a South by Southwest tribute concert. “I was out on the Sweat Tour with Snoop, and we had got the word from his family on what was going on, and it was just a crushing blow for us,” he said. “Just from going to see him and lifting his spirits up when he was in therapy and stuff like that, it’s just crazy for that to happen. And while the mood onstage was definitely joyous — the quartet performed many of the songs Nate leant his voice to, in a poignant tribute to his talents — backstage at Austin’s Venue 222, things were much more muted. In fact, when Warren G spoke to MTV News about his late cohort, he didn’t hide the fact that he (and everyone who ever knew Nate Dogg) was still hurting inside. In fact, starting with the moment he heard the news of Nate’s passing, things have been far from normal. “I was out on the Sweat Tour with Snoop, and we had got the word from his family on what was going on, and it was just a crushing blow for us,” Warren said. “Just, from going to see him and lifting his spirits up when he was in therapy, and stuff like that, it’s just crazy for that to happen. And I still don’t believe it, you know what I’m saying? “It kind of hurts me when I look at this shirt [the organizers of the SXSW tribute show sold Nate Dogg T-shirts, with proceeds going to the late singer’s family], it’s like, ‘Damn, that’s my homeboy on this shirt,’ ” he continued. “And I’m hurting, and you know, a lot of people are showing tons of support for his family, for his homeboys, and we really and truly appreciate that.
