T.I. Says He’ll ‘Be A Better Man’ In New Prison Letter

Rapper reflects on incarceration, No Mercy album and teases next LP in latest missive. By Gil Kaufman T.I. Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images At this time last year, T.I. was counting down the days to his release to a halfway house after winding down a prison term on gun possession charges. But another Christmas is about to pass and the King of the South (born Clifford Harris) will again celebrate from behind prison bars in an Arkansas lockup, where he’s in the midst of an 11-month sentence for violating his probation. With his latest album, No Mercy, out on Tuesday (December 7), Tip released a letter (posted to his website the same day) updating fans on his state of mind and reflecting on where he’s been, where he hopes to go and what he’s thinking about. “So here it is…NO MERCY, the most honest and intimate installment of my life story as promised,” he wrote of the album, recorded earlier this year as he was preparing to leave the halfway house and get back to his career after nine months behind bars. “Hope y’all enjoy it and it lives up to the very high standards I’ve set for myself or anyone who’s to be considered one of the best. I must admit it takes a lot to go through as much as I have and still keep the love in your heart and in your art. But at the end of the day, if that’s what it takes to produce the music that keeps the world of hip-hop evolving on it’s axis….Then even the lowest of the lows of my life was all worth it. Thanks again for your prayers, your time and attention. And remember….It doesn’t matter how long it’ll be before the next time you see me. What matters is that I’ll be a better man before that time comes. The longer I sit, the smarter I get.” Last month, the Atlanta MC penned a note in which he admitted he was tired of being in and out of prison . In this one, T.I. thanked fans who’ve been writing to him and lifting his spirits every day; he assured them he reads all of their missives and cherishes their kind words. And while he admitted he could never write them all back (though, at the end of the post, he included a long list of people who’d sent him letters), he gave them a collective shout-out. “It’s a relief to know that there still are people who see a man with a life and not just another headline in the news,” he said. “Most of you sound very concerned and optimistic at the same time about my situation. Let me assure you all that I am definitely keeping my head up. I don’t consider myself done by far. Also many of you are convinced as I am that God has a plan for me that he’s preparing me for. How do you tell God Almighty that all you wanna do is LIVE LIFE ??? What if all you wanna do is be a father to your kids, a husband to your wife, and son to your mother while providing insightful motivation through music and lending a helping hand when possible to those who need it most. Well guys…That’s the topic of discussion between me and the MOST HIGH at the moment. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out.” He added that maybe he’d try to capture that dialogue between him and a higher power on his next album, putting those heavy internal discussions to music. In the meantime, Tip promised to reveal the title of the follow-up to No Mercy soon and encouraged his supporters to hang in there. What do you think of T.I.’s latest letter? Tell us in the comments. Will.I.Am Reveals He Has Tinnitus, Ringing In The Ears

Black Eyed Peas frontman tells British tabloid The Sun , ‘Music is the only thing which eases my pain.’ By Gil Kaufman will.i.am Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am is the modern version of an old-school rock star: His group sells millions of albums, is prepping a stadium tour and, as such guitar-slinging icons as The Who have in the past, is about to rock halftime at the Super Bowl in February. According to an interview with the British tabloid The Sun , there’s another thing Will has in common with The Who: like that group’s legendary guitarist Pete Townshend, will.i.am says he suffers from the painful condition tinnitus. The malady, which is common among musicians who’ve been exposed to loud music for prolonged periods, includes such symptoms as a constant ringing or buzzing in the ears. “I can’t be still. Work calms me down,” Will, 35, says of the maddening noise in his ears, a malady that is especially cruel to a producer whose ability to mix and blend sounds is crucial to his career. “I can’t be quiet, as that’s when I notice the ringing in my ears,” he describes. “There’s always a beep there every day, all day. Like now. I don’t know exactly how long I’ve had this, but it’s gradually got worse.” And while the ailment has slowed down Townshend and forced the famously aggressive guitarist to sometimes resort to strumming an acoustic during Who shows, Will says he’s taken the diagnosis as a spur to make even more music. “I don’t know what silence sounds like anymore. Music is the only thing which eases my pain,” he explains. As proof of the severity of illness, the paper describes the producer/rapper regularly working his finger into his ear and shaking his head during the interview to try to silence the noise in his head. The content of the interview wasn’t confirmed to MTV News by a spokesperson for the group by press time. With a new BEP release, The Beginning , to promote and a world tour slated for 2011 — not to mention production duties on the next U2 album — Will has plenty of booming distractions to keep him busy over the next year. And he can take solace in the fact that he’s certainly not alone in suffering. Among the other musicians who’ve shown symptoms of tinnitus over the years: film-score composer Danny Elfman; rock legends Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Paul Simon and Neil Young; electronic musician Moby; U2 singer Bono and Ludwig van Beethoven. T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? Daft Punk’s ‘Derezzed’ Video: Behind The ‘Tron Legacy’ Nerdery

We take a closer look at the just-released clip from the sequel’s soundtrack. By Eric Ditzian A scene from Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” Photo: Walt Disney Records What would happen if Daft Punk were not only tasked with drafting the score for “Tron Legacy” but also were given full creative control of the Disney-backed sequel? Well, it would probably rock, and it would probably look a lot like the group’s just-released music video for “Derezzed.” The video pays deep respect to the 1982 original movie (light-cycles, black-and-neon grids, gladiator games) while staking out new visual territory and just being kinda weird (what’s up with that bird?). For committed “Tron” nerds, the music video speaks in their language, but the uninitiated might be a bit lost. That’s where MTV News comes in. Let’s begin at the beginning, OK? The video opens on a shot of Flynn’s Arcade . The Flynn in question is Kevin (played in both movies by Jeff Bridges), a game designer working for a tech company called Encom until his creations are stolen by a nefarious rival, and he’s promptly sacked. He ends up opening the arcade, which becomes a popular hangout in the early ’80s. But running an arcade just ain’t gonna cut it for a guy as ambitious as Flynn. He hatches a plan to break into Encom and prove the company’s new games — such as Space Paranoids and Matrix Blaster — are actually his own. Flynn’s heart was in the right place, but what he didn’t count on was an Encom mainframe capable of sucking him into a computer world. That’s exactly what happens, and throughout the first film Flynn is forced to fight off all sorts of pixilated baddies . And that’s pretty much what happens to the Daft Punk dudes when they pop a few quarters into that “Derezzed” video console . There’s no such game in the Encom world, but “derezzed” is an especially resonant word in the “Tron” universe: It’s a sort of digital death in which your program essentially disappears. “Derez” is what happens to that unfortunate jouster late in the music video. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Back to Flynn’s Arcade! Once Daft Punk have powered up the game, their digital selves — “programs,” in “Tron”-speak, which are written by “users” like Flynn — materialize in the game world as light-cycles that flicker into being. Of all the beloved “Tron” imagery, light-cycles are easily the most iconic. The vehicles are part of a gladiatorial racing game that Flynn created. Once inside the computer world, though, he finds himself actually racing along on them (the object is to make competitors crash into the trail of light your bike emits). Daft Punk tweaks the light-cycle motif when it becomes clear these aren’t just bikes but mechanized horses . We’ve got an old-fashioned joust on our hands! We haven’t seen that before. But then, we haven’t seen anything like this music video before. “Tron,” while revolutionary in its time, hardly looks cool by 21st-century standards; its chunky graphics and limited color palette are amusingly outdated. “Tron Legacy,” by contrast, brings to bear the very latest in computer-generated imagery; it is reminiscent of, but distinctly different from, its progenitor. The music video splits the difference with a retro-contemporary hybrid: This is the 1982 aesthetic cut through with 2010 moviemaking technology. It’s both for the old-school geeks for whom “Tron” is akin to scripture and the whippersnappers who, sure, know something about the original film, but would never, like, sit down and watch it yet still are psyched to see the new flick when it hits theaters December 17. Criss originally performed the tune on the hit Fox show, while Perry released it earlier this year as the second single from her album of the same name. The two finally took the stage together for the first time at the Trevor LIVE annual fundraising event held at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Criss, dressed in a suit, was performing the track with the show’s Dalton Academy Warblers, when Perry, dressed in a sequin dress, hit the stage to belt out the last bit of the tune. Footage of the performance hit the Net shortly after the event. Other performances for the night included a spoken-word number from Queen Latifah as well as the Hollywood Bowl cast of “Rent” singing “Seasons of Love” and “Will I.” Kathy Griffin was honored by “Glee” star Jane Lynch for donating her paycheck from an L.A.-area stand-up gig to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. The movie will be on hiatus until singer/actor’s muscle injury heals. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Timberlake (file) Photo: Christian Petersen/ Getty Images Last week, Justin Timberlake was spotted on crutches after sustaining an injury on the set of his sci-fi thriller “Now.” And now, more details are emerging about what happened to the singer/actor when he attempted to do his own stunts on the set of the Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde co-starring flick. Sources say they “heard a pop” in Timberlake’s leg, and E! News confirmed that Timberlake’s injury has temporarily shut down production on the film. A rep for the studio said in a statement, “Justin Timberlake sustained a muscle injury to his calf on the set of Andrew Niccol’s thriller ‘Now.’ Production has taken a brief hiatus and will resume shortly.” A set source told the website that the shutdown should last about two weeks. “He hasn’t heard anything about the MRI results,” the source added. “But they’re freezing production until he’s off crutches and able to act again.” Timberlake was spotted at the Arclight theater in Hollywood for a “Social Network” Q&A session last Thursday, and he seemed to be having trouble walking. The session took place shortly after he was injured. Demi Lovato Tour Dancer Demands Apology From Disney Star

Dancer Alex Welch threatens legal action stemming from altercation with Lovato. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato and Alex Welch Photo: Getty Images When news first broke that Demi Lovato had entered a treatment facility to deal with personal issues, it was reported that an altercation between Demi and a female dancer had been a factor in the Disney star’s decision to seek help. Now, dancer Alex Welch — who was on the road with Lovato and the Jonas Brothers — is speaking up about the incident, which reportedly took place in late October, just before Lovato announced she was leaving the JoBros’ tour. “To this day, I haven’t gotten an apology. I’ve heard nothing,” Welch told People magazine on Monday (December 6). “That’s sad if you think that person is your friend.” According to reports, Lovato was angry when she found out someone on the tour had told tour managers about her partying. Welch said the teen star “pulled the dancers in a room and threatened: ‘If I find out who told on me, ‘ ” adding that she was clueless about what Lovato was referring to. “I felt, honestly, I didn’t say anything and didn’t think twice about it,” Welch recalled. “We were on the plane with the Jonases having this awesome time, and I didn’t get a call or text from Demi or a ‘hey, you got a problem with me,’ nothing. And she walks up and punches me and, literally, walked away and got in her seat,” she continued. “No one should walk up and do that and brush it over, it’s not right.” TMZ posted photos of Welch with what looked like a black eye. The dancer said she’s looking at her legal options now. “We have contacted the Lovato camp and we are waiting for a response. If we don’t hear back, we will pursue litigation.” A rep for Demi confirmed that, saying, “We are in the process of engaging with Alex’s lawyer and hope to resolve this as quickly as possible.” The rep added, “Demi feels awful about what happened. Right now, she is 100 percent committed to her treatment.” What do you think of Alex Welch’s side of the story? Tell us in the comments. Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Is MTV News’ #9 Song Of 2010

Rihanna collaboration topped the charts and got real, landing it high on our Top 25 songs of the year. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, an all-encompassing list that has already included the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West , to name just a few. Now, we’re pulling the curtain back on our pick for #9 … Eminem and Rihanna’s massive “Love the Way You Lie,” a song that resonated with both fans and critics alike, mostly because it was unafraid to get unspeakably real. For more than a decade now, Eminem has always operated with a safety net: his Slim Shady alter ego. Slim says and does the kind of things that normal people can’t (or don’t), dealing almost exclusively in wanton acts of violence and/or depravity and never, ever apologizing for any of it. At times, the act has been so convincing that you’re not quite sure if Em is Slim Shady, which is how he’s been able to get away with songs like “Kim” (in which he stuffs his wife in the trunk of his car), “Kill You” (where he rapes his own mother) and even “3 a.m.” (the one where he goes on a pill-addled murder spree). Because of Slim, no matter how brutal or unflinching Eminem’s subject matter, his fans have always been able to laugh it away, even if, deep down inside, that darkness still terrifies them. “That isn’t really Eminem,” the logic goes. “It’s Slim Shady. It’s different. ” But in 2010, Eminem changed things up. He got sober, he got serious and — for the most part — he shelved the Slim Shady character altogether. It was a bold, if not necessary, move, and the end result was Recovery, an album that has wowed critics and fans alike, thanks in no small part to the complete absence of that alter ego. Instead, we all got to see Em as his most honest, his most brutal … and, in the case of “Love the Way You Lie,” his darkest. On the surface, “Lie” is an unblinking, unyielding examination of a relationship gone horribly awry, a rapidly descending tale of two lovers who cannot live without each other, and seem destined to die because of it. It’s a masterwork of unfiltered angst, full of violence (both real and imagined) and threats (or promises), and the fact that it resonated to such a degree with the record-buying public — it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks — is both a testament to its power and more terrifying than a dozen songs about stuffing someone in a trunk. But no matter how you choose to analyze the song and its success, you cannot deny the fact that the song works mostly because it’s so terribly real. When Em screams “Next time/ There will be no next time,” you can’t help but believe that he’s telling the truth, no matter how frightening that may be, and you get the creeping suspicion that he’s actually shouted that threat to someone very close to him at some point in his past. Perhaps even more terrifying is the fact that he follows that line up with “I apologize.” You cannot write a song any better than that, because that’s how this kind of thing happens in real life. And though she might seem an odd choice to sing the hook, Rihanna more than holds her own against Eminem’s bluster. She returns serve, her rage and heartbreak are equally as tangible as his … once again, because you get the feeling (well, or you know for a fact) that she’s been in situations like this before. Sadly, there’s no substitute for experience. “Love the Way You Lie” is about many things, most of which are very bad. But it’s also a testament to Eminem’s courage and willingness to put it all on the line, his gifted skills as a storyteller and his deft ability to turn his gaze inward. For the first time, he sheds Slim Shady and walks the tightrope without the aid of a safety net, a balancing act that’s scarier — and more thrilling — than a dozen ax murders. For better or worse.
