50 Cent Calls Michael Jackson Collabo The ‘2010 Version’ Of ‘Thriller’

Rapper reflects on ‘Monster,’ revealing that the duo did not record together. By James Dinh 50 Cent Photo: Getty Images/Jakubaszek In less than two weeks, Michael Jackson ‘s first posthumous album, Michael, will hit stores and include a string of unreleased MJ tracks. The 10-song set includes a collaboration between the iconic performer and 50 Cent . In a candid interview that appeared on MJJackson.com , 50 Cent reminiscences about how the song “Monster” came about. “I didn’t have the opportunity to physically be in Michael Jackson’s presence,” Fif said. “But my DJ, Whoo Kid, he had the opportunity to actually meet Mike, because he was interested in working with me and he said that he had something he wanted me to actually hear, a song he created. He thought it would be perfect for us to collaborate on and then he put me on the telephone.” While 50 has teamed up with a slew of artists in the past, he said the Jackson opportunity was unlike any other. “I don’t usually get nervous, because I really don’t care about a lot of the artists,” he said. “But Mike is special. He’s different. I don’t know how to explain it.” After the shocking news of Jackson’s sudden death, Fif received a call to come into the studio and perform his portion of the track. Once in the studio, the rapper worked with producer Teddy Riley (Jackson’s Dangerous ) on the song. “When I sat down and listened to the actual song, I was excited. I said, ‘This is the 2010 version of “Thriller,” ‘ ” the rapper recalled. A snippet of the track (minus 50) reportedly leaked onto the Internet just a few days ago. Despite not being able to actually record the track with Jackson, 50 Cent intended to make his mark on the song. “I missed an opportunity to be on a record not just with a great artist, but a legend,” he lamented. “So I wanted more, and I made adjustments to my cadence so I don’t sound like I sound on music that people have previously heard from me, because I’m adjusting to the production.” While not everyone has been excited about the posthumous release, Fif thinks it will be welcomed by most. “I think this album is more special,” he said. “It’ll be embraced different because it’s the last of really great material that Mike created, so I think people will want it to go in their actual collection to go in their Michael Jackson material. It’s a great example of how the art and the material will last longer than we will.” Last July, the MC told MTV News that he was inspired by a piece of artwork featuring the legendary performer for the cover of his Forever King mixtape . “When Michael Jackson passed, there was a piece of artwork that had ‘King of Pop, King of Rap’ with me and his pictures,” he said.” “That’s what gave me the concept of the artwork. There’s a real human skull that’s got diamonds embedded in it.” Are you excited to hear the 50 Cent and MJ collabo? Tell us below! Britney Spears: A Look Back At Her Singles … So Far

With her new album due in March, we revisit some of the pop princess’ many hits. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jive Now that Britney Spears has announced that she will be releasing a new album in March 2011, fans must be wondering what her latest musical endeavor will sound like. The as-yet-untitled effort is a follow-up to 2008’s well-received Circus , which helped resurrect the singer’s career after a dark time in her life. No information regarding the upcoming album has emerged, but Britney’s faithful followers have watched her change up her look and sound with each single over the span of her decade-plus career, as she evolved from a bubblegum-pop princess to a sexy dance-club siren. Let’s trace Spears’ musical journey by taking a look at some of her most memorable tunes. In 1999, a fresh-faced Spears released ” …Baby One More Time” (produced by Max Martin), the title track off her massive debut album. She got the conversation about her sexuality started thanks to a provocative video in which she danced around in a Catholic school uniform, as well as the song’s equally provocative lyrics, where she longingly sang, “My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess, I still believe/ When I’m not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me baby one more time.” It’s to be noted that the song originally was intended for TLC. In the video for “Oops! … I Did It Again” (produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub), Spears’ smash from the 2000 album of the same name, the pigtails and skirt were gone, replaced by a red catsuit. That visual, as well as the song’s lyrical content, reflected Spears’ evolution from naughty schoolgirl to intergalactic sex kitten, both in her video and on the song’s lyrical content. For “I’m a Slave 4 U” (produced by the Neptunes) off 2001’s Britney , Spears declared her sexual independence. No longer was she just teasing about the idea that she loved the beat of dance music and how sexy it made her feel, instead she was explicitly sharing it with the world. Plus, who could forget all the sweat in that video. In 2003, Spears teamed up with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for “Me Against the Music” (produced by Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet), the sexy lead single from In the Zone . While the darker, more synth-heavy “Toxic” would become the album’s defining tune, “Me Against the Music” picked up where “Slave” left off: Spears battling the demon she has inside of her that just loves to come out on the dance floor. After a few years of not putting out any music, Spears hit the club again with 2007’s “Gimme More” (produced by Danja) off the aptly titled Blackout . Between the release of In the Zone and Blackout , Spears had married, divorced and become a mother — she also had started to act erratically. The track, which relied more heavily on underground dance and electro than most of Spears’ previous singles, was a highly sexualized tune about getting it on. After the darkness of Blackout , Spears got back to her fun and frolicking old ways on the 2008 Circus single “Womanizer” (produced by the Outsyders). The track was a return to form for Spears after the lackluster response to Blackout , and it brought the discussion back around to her music and away from her sometimes topsy-turvy personal life. In the song’s video, Spears gets back at a player, and really has the last laugh. The clip also features ffotage of a completely nude Britney in a steamy sauna. In 2009, Spears shot to the top of the charts with the danceable track “Three” (produced by Martin and Shellback) off The Singles Collection . The tune was an instant smash, and featured Spears robotically singing about a m

Slim Thug Balances H-Town And Mainstream In Tha Thug Show

‘I think I did a good job of mixing it up,’ the Houston rapper says of his latest album. By Jayson Rodriguez Slim Thug Photo: MTV News Slim Thug thinks he might have veered too far left on his debut album, 2005’s Already Platinum. And the follow up, last year’s Boss of All Bosses might have shot off to the right a bit too much. But for his latest salvo, Tha Thug Show, released this week, the Texas titan said he hit right on the mark. “My aim for this album was to give the fans the Already Platinum feel and my second album and even it out,” he told MTV News. “The response I’ve been getting has been good. But my first album was kind of mainstream with all the Pharrell stuff, but the people of Houston felt like they didn’t get enough of the old Slim Thug. And then on Boss of All Bosses, I gave them nothing but H-Town. [ Laughs. ] But on this one, I wanted to give them half and half, and I think I did a good job of mixing it up.” The project features collaborations with B.o.B (“So High”), Yo Gotti, Nipsey Hussle, Big K.R.I.T. and Rick Ross. Ross and Slim Thug were involved in a minor dispute over the summer via Twitter over their shared nickname, “Boss,” and a dated Ross record that leaked. But the pair patched things up and released “Paid the Coast” as a sign of solidarity between the rappers. “For a record to surface and me being a little slow on Twitter, I didn’t really peep it until two days later,” Ross told MTV News at the time. “When I found out about it and heard about it, they said I’m dissing Slim Thug. ” ‘What’s the name of the record? “King Boss”?’ ” he remembered asking. “I never had a record called ‘King Boss.’ I just left it alone. After the fact, [Slim] asked me about it. I told the homie, ‘Of course it ain’t nothing but love between me and you, big dawg.’ We got in the studio later that night. The night we spoke. I e-mailed him something; shot him something, did something for his album. It’s fire. Then I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters.” Related Artists Slim Thug

Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Is ‘Confident’ In His Grammy Chances

Two of his songs — Em’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ — are facing off for Record of the Year. By Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year. MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one. “I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.” Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there. The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances. “I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.” Do you think Alex has a good shot come Grammy night? La Roux Marvel At Having Kim Kardashian And Snooki As Fans

‘I’ve never seen ‘Jersey Shore’ … apparently it’s quite a big deal,’ frontwoman Elly Jackson laughs. By Jocelyn Vena La Roux’s Elly Jackson Photo: MTV News La Roux had quite the 2010, thanks to the smash success of their track “Bulletproof,” which brought the dance group loads of new fans — including starlets and soldiers. “A few months ago, someone sent me a tweet that Kim Kardashian — and I only just found out who the Kardashians were — and they said she just tweeted, ‘This time I’ll be bulletproof.’ And she’s got this bullet bracelet on, and they said she tweeted that, and I was like, ‘Now that’s really weird,’ ” La Roux frontwoman Elly Jackson told MTV News. “The fact that it reaches people like that — which, when we were writing it in a living room in South London, we didn’t think it’d be reaching multimillionaires in L.A. — it doesn’t compute with me. So it is what it is. It has a universal quality.” It seems that Kardashian isn’t the only reality star with a love for La Roux: “Jersey Shore” star Snooki was spotted at a La Roux gig in New York last month. “I’ve never seen ‘Jersey Shore’ … apparently it’s quite a big deal!” Jackson laughed. “Bulletproof” and another La Roux hit, “In for the Kill,” have also become anthems for those fighting the good fight. “I think it’s like we were saying before about ‘In for the Kill,’ it’s one of those things you can take it to mean anything. I heard that amongst troops in Iraq, it was a really big song for them, obviously, because it’s like ‘Bulletproof’ … a great anthem for them. “But did I ever think anyone would take that song and make it mean that for them? No I didn’t!” Jackson continued. “And I think that’s one of the great things about it, is that people can listen to it and hear ‘This time, baby, I’ll be bulletproof’ and they can apply it to anything.” What do you think about the universal appeal of La Roux’s music? Angelina Jolie Hits Backs Against Bosnian War Movie Criticism

‘There’s one person who has a gripe,’ actress says of war victim’s complaint. By Eric Ditzian Angelina Jolie Photo: Toni Passig/ WireImage After initially seeking to ease tensions with a Bosnian women’s group that has raised concerns over Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut , the actress has now spoken out against the group’s leader and called her worries out of touch with mainstream opinion. The Women Victims of War and its leader, Bakira Hasecic, have been speaking out against Jolie’s untitled film — and a purported storyline in which a rape victim falls in love with her captor on the eve of the 1992 war — leading this week to Hasecic’s declaration that she intended to file a complaint with the United Nations refugee agency. Speaking with Reuters in Paris, Jolie hit back against the criticism. “There’s one person who has a gripe,” Jolie said. “The absolute majority of the people, population, the cast, prime minister, president have been extremely supportive,” she explained, adding that the vast majority of the film’s crew had lived through the war, which lasted from 1992 to 1995. In October, Jolie struck a much more conciliatory tone regarding Women Victims of War’s concerns, saying in a statement, “My hope is that people will hold judgment until they have seen the film.” But after Hasecic’s group filed a complaint with the UN, for which Jolie is a goodwill ambassador, the actress-turned-director has become more pointed in defending herself. Previously, a rep for Jolie denied the movie contained any plotline about a rape victim falling in love with her rapist. In her October statement, Jolie said, “There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released.” Jolie told Reuters she initially planned to pen a screenplay focusing on the often delayed international response to international conflicts, but that her research led her to focus on the former Yugoslavia. “It kept leaning toward Yugoslavia at the time, I wanted to learn more about it and the people, the more I read and learnt, I was drawn to that part of the world,” she explained. “I met artists from that part of the world and found they were extraordinary for what they’d gone through, so I wanted to give them a platform.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Joe Jonas Solo Album Will Have ‘A Little Edge,’ Songwriter Says

Kevin Cossom says he and producer Danja are giving the Jonas Brother ‘a lane’ of his own. By James Dinh Joe Jonas Photo: Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images Alongside his brothers, Joe Jonas captured the hearts and lungs of a legion of young female admirers in recent years. But his audience may change a little when the Disney star releases his first solo album, according to singer/songwriter Kevin Cossom. “We’re just trying to give him a little edge,” the on-the-rise Cossom told YRB magazine of working with producer Danja on Jonas’ music. “He’s getting a little older now, and I’m just giving him a little edge, but giving him a lane. The stuff is coming out really good. As you know, Danja, he’s so versatile as far as being a producer.” Having worked with chart toppers Britney Spears (“Gimme More”), Pink (“Sober”) and Diddy-Dirty Money (“Hello Good Morning”), Danja may be the man to help the teen star make a musical transition into adulthood. “[Danja’s] very versatile, so the sound is a mixture of a lot of different things, but it’s definitely something that’s coming together,” Cossum said of the solo Jonas LP “He’s definitely going solo, getting older.” In addition to Jonas, Cossum has work lined up for Keri Hilson, Justin Bieber and Mary J. Blige. He’s also finishing up work on his own debut album, LOVE (Levels of Various Emotions). Jonas has previously said he is working on “a
