Ronald Isley, Anita Baker Honored At Soul Train Awards

By Joel Hanek and Gil Kaufman Anita Baker at the 2010 Soul Train Awards Photo: Moses Robinson/ Getty Images Only at the Soul Train Awards could you have a tribute to R&B icons such as Anita Baker and Ronald Isley alongside a segment in which rap legend Doug E. Fresh attempts to teach CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer how to do the Dougie. It was that kind of night at the 2010 Soul Train Awards, as rookies, veterans and legends came together in Atlanta for the second annual event — which was taped November 10 and aired this past Sunday on BET. The show, hosted once again by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, featured a night of performances from some of the biggest names in soul and R&B. Host Howard told MTV News that the show is meant to be an extension of the long-running and legendary ’70s TV series that brought soul, disco, R&B and rap stars into viewers’ living rooms. “It reminds me of the advancement black people have made over the years because ‘Soul Train’ really was the beginning of that Black Power movement when we could actually see ourselves — and to have an awards show based upon that ‘Soul Train’ — it’s headed somewhere,” Howard said. “We have a black president now. The country seems to be more tolerant towards the diversity inside of it so it seems like the train is moving well down the tracks.” The awards show marked the 40th anniversary of classic music showcase hosted by Don Cornelius, and celebrated the careers of Baker and Isley, while handing out trophies to such contemporary stars as B.o.B (Song of the Year for “Nothing on You”), Melanie Fiona (Best New Artist), Eminem and Rihanna (Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year for “Love the Way You Lie”), Usher (Album of the Year for Raymond vs. Raymond ) and Alicia Keys (Record of the Year for “Unthinkable [I’m Ready]” and Best Female R&B Soul Artist). Though top winners such as Trey Songz, Usher, Ciara, Eminem and Rihanna were not in the house, Blitzer graciously agreed to accept Slim Shady’s award for him, joking, “Who better to accept this award on behalf of Eminem … I know he’s thrilled.” Weaving through a series of skits involving magic tricks and jovial bickering by the hosts, the performance-heavy program delivered on talent. R. Kelly opened by teasing the crowd with his classic “Bump n’ Grind,” then diving into his new single “When a Woman Loves” — transforming the song from a slow jam into an all-out ’50s rock-and-roll epic. Ne-Yo kept the show moving with a showcase of his singles from this year, including “Champagne Life” and “One in a Million.” The tribute to Baker featured an all-star cast, with artists like Chrisette Michele, Goapele, Lalah Hathaway, Dionne Farris, Kem, Tamia, Faith Evans and El DeBarge covering a medley of the singer’s greatest hits. Baker told the crowd that the biggest honor of the night for her was that real musicians were performing live with an actual band. “It’s amazing because you’ve got children behind you singing ‘Rapture’ — it’s lovely,” she said, adding, “Let’s do it again!” Ronald Isley, co-founder and lead singer of the Isley Brothers, also received a special homage that featured Jeffrey Osborne, Freddy Jackson, DeBarge, Tank, Eric Benet, Bilal and Peabo Bryson. Isley also came out to perform his own medley of hits and was joined on stage by Chant

Jay-Z’s ‘Decoded’ Takes #3 Spot On New York Times Best Sellers List

Hov’s first book comes in behind George W. Bush’s ‘Decision Points’ and Laura Hillenbrand’s ‘Unbroken.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: John Parra/ Getty Images Jay-Z might be able to best Elvis Presley when it comes to topping the album charts, but the Brooklyn MC wasn’t able to muscle past former president George W. Bush on the book list. The witty wordsmith-turned-author debuted at #3 on the New York Times Best Sellers list with his first book, “Decoded,” a collection of the rapper’s lyrics deconstructed with the help of co-author Dream Hampton. The former prez’s book “Decision Points” topped the Hardcover Nonfiction list for the second time in as many weeks. Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken” was the top debut, notching the #2 slot. Jay-Z went on a heavy promotional campaign for “Decoded,” making appearances on the “Late Show With David Letterman,” “Charlie Rose” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” He also partnered with Microsoft’s Bing search engine for a portal that doubled as a scavenger hunt-like game where readers who decoded Jay-Z’s lyrics would unearth scripts of his lyrics in the locations he referred to in song. In the past, Jay-Z promised to deliver a memoir, co-authored by Hampton, titled “The Black Book.” But the rapper subsequently revealed that the material was too personal and decided to pull the plug on that project. “Decoded” does get personal nonetheless, as evidenced during passages such as the one in which the “Empire State of Mind” star recalls the death of the Notorious B.I.G. “I wanted people to have the proper context of rap, the generation, what we went through, these emotions behind these songs,” Jay-Z told MTV News earlier this month. “A song like ‘Lucifer,’ it’s really about the struggle and really about dealing with death and having that feeling. The evil is inside of you, not this mythical character with pitchforks and things like that. Dealing with a feeling of wanting revenge.” Related Videos Jay-Z’s ‘Decoded’: A Closer Look Related Artists Jay-Z

Black Eyed Peas Confirmed For Super Bowl Halftime Show

Peas will touch down during big game on February 6. By Gil Kaufman Black Eyed Peas Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images As if any more proof were necessary, the Black Eyed Peas will cement their reputation as one of the biggest bands in the world in February when they take the stage during the Super Bowl XLV halftime show. After unconfirmed reports surfaced last week that the hip-pop superstars would be breaking the recent chain of classic rock halftime performers, representatives from the National Football League made it official on Sunday. The Peas, whose latest album, The Beginning , is due out on Tuesday, will play the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLV Halftime show during the big game at Cowboys Stadium on February 6. Even for a group that has played to massive crowds across the globe, the Super Bowl gig is a once-in-a-lifetime affair, as it is the most-watched TV event of the year, seen by more than 153 million viewers in the U.S. and millions more around the globe. Both the game and the halftime show will be broadcast worldwide. The Peas will become the first non-rock act in seven years to perform on the biggest stage in TV, following in the footsteps of a glittering procession of classic rock acts that have had the honor in recent years, including Sir Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, and last year, the Who. As extra incentive for fans to pick up The Beginning, the band is offering a chance to be their special guests at the Super Bowl halftime show. The megashow will be the first of what will likely be a whole year of blowouts according to BEP leader will.i.am , who recently told Billboard magazine that his group hopes to fill stadiums around the globe in 2011. Chris Brown, Bow Wow Rock Free Thanksgiving Concert In Atlanta

Stars perform at event which hooked up locals with a turkey giveaway and carnival. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Chris Brown Photo: MTV News With another Thanksgiving upon us, celebrities are in the giving spirit. On Tuesday night, Chris Brown and Bow Wow kicked off some pre-Turkey Day festivities with a free concert for their Atlanta-area fans. Decked out in a slate-gray suit and white kicks, Breezy rocked tracks like his Graffiti joint “I Can Transform Ya,” flanked by similarly dapper backup dancers as he turned out his signature athletic choreography. The “Deuces” singer said he was down to gift concertgoers with a high-octane performance just in time for the holidays. “It was fun, I had a great time,” Brown told MTV News. “I love giving back to the fans and everybody who got to come out who really don’t get a chance to come out and go to concerts and things like that.” Also at the event, which was organized by beatsmith Polow Da Don and featured a carnival and turkey giveaway, was Breezy’s homey and fellow hitmaker Bow Wow. The Cash Money MC said he didn’t need any convincing to rock the crowd alongside his “Shortie Like Mine” collaborator — especially if it meant bringing some holiday cheer to deserving fans. “It was only right that I came out, supported the homey,” Bow said. “He called me, wanted me to come out, perform the record, shut it down, and I told him it was nothing. And on top of that, it was for a positive cause.” Coming down the pike from Breezy is the follow-up to Graffiti, which features the single “Yeah 3X.” The singer updated fans about the project in September. “I’m putting out singles a lot right now, so everything’s coming together. But I definitely am gonna to say this and plug it quick: The name of my album is Fame, so make sure you check it out,” he said during a stop at an Austin, Texas, radio station. Birdman Delivers Thanksgiving Joy To New Orleans

Cash Money CEO brings turkeys to his hometown neighborhood. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Travis Laurendine Birdman Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images We rarely see the soft side of Cash Money CEO Birdman, but MTV News caught up with the 5-Star General in his hometown of New Orleans on Tuesday afternoon for his 15th annual turkey giveaway. The event was in Shakespeare Park, across the street from the housing projects Birdman, born Bryan Williams, grew up in. He said he was very happy to be home. “It feels good to see people that you grew up with, that you’ve been knowing your whole life and your family,” Birdman said. “[They] know more about you than you know about yourself.” He said the drive means a lot to those in the community, not just because of the giveaway, but also because the town is thrilled just to see Birdman and the rest of the Cash Money family. “They see us on TV so much, but never get to see us [in person]. But for them to see us, shake our hands, tell us they know our momma, they know our daddy, so many that watched me as a kid that tried to keep my head straight when I was younger — it feels great, not just good.” Birdman said Cash Money have been giving away turkeys for 15 years, but every year, it gets more exciting. He said that when they started, it was just to help out those that didn’t have anything for Thanksgiving. “We caught ourselves trying to help the neighborhood, the older folks who didn’t have anything,” he recalled. “Now it’s a different trade for me to come home and get [a reception] like this. It still means the world to me.” What are your Thanksgiving plans? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Birdman

Kanye West Gives Defiant Speech About Media During NYC Show

After performance celebrating the release of his new album, ‘Ye turns defiant. By James Dinh Kanye West performs at his secret show at Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday Photo: Erez Avissar Judging by the critical response to his new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West’s love/hate relationship with the media has had little impact on how they view his music. But while concluding his secret New York concert on Tuesday night, the hip-hop heavyweight turned attention away from his performance for a defiant speech about his public image. After the encore of his Bowery Ballroom set, West took time to reflect on the recent era in his life. “As you know, it’s been an extremely hard year for me,” he said. “But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album … I never thought I’d say this, I wanna thank the

Dane Cook Sizes Up New-Release Rivals Kanye West, Justin Bieber, More

Comedian drops I Did My Best – Greatest Hits the same week as new albums from Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha and a load of other megastars. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Dane Cook Photo: Getty Images With all the hype surrounding MTV News’ musical Mega-Release Week — Bieber! Kanye! Nicki! Ke$ha! Jay-Z! MCR! — you might not be aware of yet another album hitting stores this week: Dane Cook’s I Did My Best – Greatest Hits. Lucky for us, the man behind the album stopped by our office to discuss his just-released comedic stylings, as well as his thoughts on the other big albums dropping this week. So why release a greatest-hits album? “I’ve been doing stand-up comedy 20 years altogether — ten years of recording tracks and club sets and arena sets,” Cook explained. “So I thought it would be a great way to close out the decade, a great ‘thank you’ to fans to say, ‘These are the high-water marks that we shared,’ remaster it, make it sound great. To new fans that are always discovering me saying, ‘Where do I start?,’ this is really the collection of what I think are the highlight moments,” he said. And for the die-hard fans out there who already have some of those greatest hits, he included a bunch of unreleased tracks on the album as well. “There’s something for everyone on there,” he assured us. Regarding his competition in the new-releases category, we asked Cook to share his thoughts on some of the big names. First up, Kanye West. “Never heard of him. What is he about?” Cook deadpanned. “Kan-J? Kanye? I’m just going to call him West. That’s great. I’ll definitely look him up.” With Nicki Minaj, Cook pretended that we were asking about something suggestive — “Oh, no, I’m thinking of a m

John Travolta, Kelly Preston Welcome Baby Boy

Son Benjamin was born on Tuesday night in Florida. By Gil Kaufman John Travolta and Kelly Preston Photo: Getty Images John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The couple welcomed their son, Benjamin, on Tuesday night at a hospital in Florida. A spokesperson for the actors confirmed the news to E! Online in a statement. “John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family,” read the statement. “Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully.” The baby weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The superstar duo announced in May that Preston, 48, was pregnant with their third child together a little more than a year after 16-year-old autistic son Jett died of a seizure in January 2009 while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. Preston recently told People magazine that the family was in serious preparation mode as her due date approached. “I’ve been cleaning out everything in the house,” Preston said in September. “Ella has been helping too. She’s looking forward to being a big sister.” Travolta has been taking a hiatus from acting in the wake of the news about the baby and has kept his schedule light, appearing as the bald-headed baddie Charlie Wax in the little-seen thriller “From Paris with Love” alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers earlier this year. At press time it did not appear that Travolta had any other roles in the can or on his upcoming schedule. Kanye West Makes Fantasy Real With Secret NYC Show

Nicki Minaj, Justin Vernon, Teyana Taylor join ‘Ye at Bowery Ballroom to celebrate album release. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West performs at Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday Photo: Erez Avissar NEW YORK — Kanye West is nothing if not a showman, and on Tuesday, the rapper celebrated the release of his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, with a performance that was as daring and dashing as it was fraught with traces of the petulant MC of the past. Shortly after midnight, West took to the stage at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan accompanied by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and femcee/singer Teyana Taylor. The trio launched into “Dark Fantasy,” the spirited opening number of ‘Ye’s new set. Sporting a skin-tight dress, Taylor admirably belted out the chorus to the track and stuck around to ride shotgun with the G.O.O.D Music chief. “New York City, make some noise,” West told the gathering crowd after the opening selections. “Today, I’m gonna do My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. ” From there, West breezed through “Gorgeous,” “Power” and “All of the Lights,” the latter of which was a rumbling effort. Nicki Minaj joined Yeezy on stage for some album-release unity when the DJ spun “Monster,” sans Jay-Z. Rick Ross arrived onstage for the Bink-produced “Devil in a New Dress.” When West teased the first few chords of “Runaway,” the crowd — which included Diddy, music executives Lyor Cohen and Sylvia Rhone, ?uestlove, comedian Aziz Ansari and Selita Ebanks — erupted with approval. The dramatic rendition was easily the night’s highlight and featured artist Pusha T looked possessed on the microphone. Meanwhile, West was like a mad scientist pounding away on his MPC machine, creating musical backdrops to match almost each song. After over an hour of performing, Yeezy closed the proceedings with a stirring, slowed-down rendition of the song “Lost in the World,” the song he’s slated to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday . He reappeared on stage shortly after for an encore and powered through brief versions of “Christian Dior Denim Flow” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” Although he finished with “Good Life,” it may have been the defiance of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” that stuck with ‘Ye after the performance, when he spoke to the crowd. “As you know, it’s been an extremely hard year for me,” he began. “But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album … I never thought I’d say this, I wanna thank the magazines for perfect scores across the board. I always felt like I could do anything. “To do 100,000 digitally,” Ye continued, remarking on his first day tally in sales from Monday. “And slated to do 600,000 the first week. I’m not here to do mother—-ing politics. I’m here to make music. I’m not here to talk in no interviews; no one ask me any stupid f—ing questions.” Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums.
