Will.i.am Remembers Knowing ‘All’ The ‘Sesame Street’ Songs

Now the BEP frontman gets to perform his ‘ What I Am’ for the show’s season premiere, September 27. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Tim Kash Will.I.Am on the set of “Sesame Street” Photo: MTV News Will.i.am made quite an impression on the music world when he performed with Nicki Minaj during the pre-show of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and he’s about to make waves among an entirely different audience soon. His new song “What I Am,” which he performed for “Sesame Street,” just premiered online , and the track will also be featured on the show’s season premiere on September 27. Flanked by an army of “Sesame Street” all-stars (including Big Bird, Elmo, Grover and Cookie Monster), Will croons an inspiration track about being yourself, setting goals and working hard to achieve those goals. The video segment was recorded back in November, and MTV News was there to catch up with Will (and Grover). “The song is called ‘What I Am,’ and it’s about making goals and working hard to achieve them,” Will told MTV News. He was especially honored to be on the set of “Sesame Street” and working with some of the Muppets who gave him his early education. “You have to understand: I was like 4 or 5 years old, and I always wanted to watch ‘Sesame Street,’ ” he said. “Grover helped me learn about numbers and about the alphabet, and I used to know all the songs.” He had a fan in Grover, who insisted he liked the Black Eyed Peas, as well as “carrots, broccoli, all those vegetables.” Grover later taught will a few dance moves while the producer provided beatbox backup. Will represents the first in a series of high-profile guest appearances on the 41st season of “Sesame Street,” including Katy Perry, Usher, Jude Law, Ryan Reynolds, Kara DioGuardi, Reggie Bush and Zoe Saldana. Ciara Teases ‘Possible’ Collabo With N.E.R.D.

‘We’re talking about doing a couple of things,’ Ciara says at the VMAs. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Ciara Photo: MTV News Ciara and N.E.R.D. blazed the stage when they performed the band’s sultry single “Hot-N-Fun” at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards . When MTV News caught up with the ATL princess on the show’s white carpet, she dished that fans could be rocking to a white-hot collaboration between CiCi and the hip-hop crew in the future. “We’re talking about doing a couple of things. We’ve been in the studio a little bit too, just, like, talking about things and stuff,” Ciara said. “In the future, it’s very possible that you’ll be hearing something more from possibly me and N.E.R.D. and also maybe even just me and Pharrell, musically.” The songstress, who took on Nelly Furtado’s vocal duties from on the original track, joined the band for a hip-twisting, back-bending performance at the show’s Chevrolet Cruze Drive-In. Whether a Ciara/N.E.R.D. project actually jumps off, the songbird said she enjoyed turning up the fire with the band onstage. “I have to say, I had a lot fun performing with Pharrell. He’s such a sweetheart, their whole crew, Chad [Hugo], Shay, all of them are such sweet guys,” she said. “I had a wonderful time.” One project that is definitely in the works is Ciara’s upcoming album, Basic Instinct. Perhaps recruiting the “Hot-N-Fun” fellas for some new tracks is a smart move, as the singer told MTV News last year that her Fantasy Ride follow-up will be, well, “hot and fun.” On last week’s VMA carpet, the singer updated her fans about her new videos and promised another dope musical ride. “My fans are gonna really be happy. They’re gonna really be in for a treat. I worked so hard on this record. I just shot two videos: ‘Gimme That’ and ‘Speechless,’ ” Ciara said. “My fans are gonna be so happy, I promise you guys. I’m so excited.” What do you a think a Ciara and N.E.R.D. collabo may sound like? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Ciara N.E.R.D.

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Celebs Weigh In

‘She’s a courageous chick,’ Mary J. Blige said at New York fashion event. By Amy Wilkinson Lady Gaga on stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Tongues are still wagging over Lady Gaga’s BBQ-defying meat dress from Sunday’s Video Music Awards , and it seems everyone has an opinion on the flesh frock. So who better to weigh in on Lady Gaga’s look than the honorees at US Weekly ‘s 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers event in New York City? While many stars lauded the “Bad Romance” singer for her sartorial bravery, most added that they’d never actually don such a rare outfit. “I thought: courageous,” host Mary J. Blige said with a laugh when asked her opinion of Lady Gaga’s meat dress. “She’s a courageous chick.” Actress and frequent “Glee” guest star Kristin Chenoweth couldn’t have agreed more. “I thought it was incredible,” she said. “Actually it was an incredible design. I wouldn’t be caught dead in it, but go girl!” One lucky celeb got to see — and smell — Franc Fernandez’s design up close and personal. “I was sitting right behind her [at the VMAs],” record producer Sean Garrett said. “That’s probably the best-smelling meat [I’ve ever smelled].” One person not coveting Garrett’s prime seat was talk-show host Wendy Williams. “I wouldn’t have been the one wanting to sit next to her,” she said. “With the hot lights and the hot skin, she was actually sizzling right there, and I understand she has a line of perfume coming out, and that would smell like A1 Sauce.” Though most celebrities found Gaga’s get-up humorous, “The City” star and People’s Revolution owner Kelly Cutrone was introspective, saying she found the frock frivolous in light of global hunger issues. “I personally think it’s not a good idea when people are starving in the world,” she said about food as fashion. “One person’s dress is another person’s dinner.” What do you think about Lady Gaga’s meat dress? Jay-Z/Eminem LP Would Be ‘Up There With Thriller,’ Fans Say

‘It would be impossible to find that album,’ says one fan of a potential collabo after historic Yankee Stadium concert. By MTV News staff Eminem and Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium on Monday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Jay-Z and Eminem just finished their Home and Home showcase, with each MC headlining two nights at baseball stadiums in their respective hometowns, New York and Detroit. But now that they’ve wrapped, is there the potential for the two to join forces again soon? MTV News hit the pavement in the Bronx just outside of Yankee Stadium to pose the question to the people: Do you want to hear a joint Jay-Z and Eminem project? “Eminem and Jay-Z together,” Karyn responded. “What a phenomenal duo — who can top that?” Jay-Z has had his share of collabo albums in the past, including two with R. Kelly and a mash-up project with Linkin Park. Now, however, the Roc Nation boss is working on a joint LP with Kanye West . But most fans seemed to agree that a record with Jay-Z and Eminem would be historical. “If Jay and Em did a record together, it would be off the hook,” Dot said. “If God can bless this earth with Jay-Z and Eminem doing an album together, all hell would break loose,” Armaan told MTV News. “It would be impossible to find that album.” Music-industry insider Eddie Blackmon agreed the project would move quickly off shelves. “They’re two of the greatest lyrical artists of our generation,” he explained. “I think if they got together and collaborated on a project, it’d sell millions and millions of records.” New Edition’s Michael Bivins also attended the event and afterward, he told MTV News he was enthusiastic about the idea of the two superstars coming together. “The expectations might be really, really high,” Bivins said about a potential LP. “Up there with Thriller. ” Do you think Jay and Em should extend their joint-tour idea to the recording studio? Drake Says He’s Going To ‘Create A World’ On Tour

Toronto MC also reveals fellow Young Money MC Tyga is new opening act on Light Dreams and Nightmares run kicking off Monday. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News Drake says when his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour kicks off next week, the lineup will be a little different than originally announced. Instead of having the Clipse open the upcoming tour, he’ll keep it to the home team with Tyga. “Me and Tyga. Family thing,” Drake revealed last week during VMA rehearsals for his Sinatra-inspired performance at the Nokia Theatre. “I love the Clipse. That’s why initially I was like, ‘Man, I wanna go out with them.’ Huge Clipse fan my whole life. But it’s one of those things, man. Me and Tyga being family — both being young, new — it made more sense to head out there with him and take on the world on some YM, Young Money. Ironically, the last tour date is the day Wayne gets home.” Actually, Wayne is slated to get out on November 5, a day before Drake’s final show in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel’s the Joint. Obviously, a scheduling conflict could have spelled disaster for the Young Money family. But Drake intends to be there to welcome back Wayne at his homecoming show. “He’s ready. He’s just ready to come home,” Drake said of his friend and Young Money boss. “I know he’s in there counting the days now.” The Toronto native also said Wayne has been working out fanatically while inside and he’s getting “huge.” “He’s filling out an ‘XL’ orange suit. Like, ‘What’s up?’ He’s big.” But back to the tour. Drake said he’s excited to be going out with a more elaborate stage show, as well as more time to perform. “This is my first time ever being able to create a world,” he said. “Prior to this, I’ve had to create my world through performance . You literally have to get lost in the music to make you feel like you were somewhere else. All I really had was like two lights or a couple of lights. My lighting guy is phenomenal. I’ve always had great colors. If you look at the photos from my shows, it’s a mirror image of my music: moody, sometimes eerie. What I did was I built a world, a dream world. It’s not based on a set, it’s based on colors; the lighting is phenomenal. I’ve got this one aspect of it where it goes from day to night. It’s really cool.” And Drizzy promised you’ll get an ample dose of So Far Gone, Thank Me Later and his guest features. “I’m dong an hour and 45 minutes,” the 23-year-old revealed. “For me, that’s crazy to carry an hour-and-45. I have trouble — with all the records I have — doing an hour and 15 minutes. [If] I do an hour and 15 minutes, I’m cutting out ‘Miss Me,’ ‘Light Up,’ ‘Money to Blow,’ records people want to hear. It’s gonna be a real interesting tour. I’m adding all the stuff from Thank Me Later. I’m excited to perform in a world. I’ve never done that before. I’ve got background singers now to make stuff sound sweeter. “Really, I go up there and do everything,” he said of his earlier outings like the Away From Home Tour. “The hooks, the singing, the R&B moments, the dancing with the girls — it’s been a test of my showmanship. … We didn’t go the arena-tour route yet. I didn’t tag along with somebody else’s tour. We still do theaters; maximum 500 people. It’s intimate. I want people to walk away and say, ‘That was great show. It was a fun time.’ ” Will you check out Drake’s new tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Drake’s Style: From A To Drizzy Related Artists Drake

Lady Gaga, Pink Usher In New Age Of Pop Spectacle

‘We have returned to the age of P.T. Barnum,’ one expert says. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Popular music has always been about putting on a show. From the psychedelic fantasias of 1970s rockers Pink Floyd to Madonna’s many Vegas-like tours, KISS’ relentless pyro attack , the boy-band glitter parades of the early 2000s and the over-the-top plans for Michael Jackson’s never-mounted This is It farewell shows , major artists have always tried to pony up a big show for their fans. And now, thanks to a new generation of visually acute music stars, we could be living in a new age of the great pop spectacle. From Muse’s massive stadium light show to Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball outing and Pink’s Cirque du Soleil-like Funhouse Tour , artists are going above and beyond in an effort to give their fans a never-ending, eye-popping extravaganza. “We were missing a real element of showmanship [in music] for a while, but you see it in Gaga and her elaborate costuming and in artists like Pink,” music-industry veteran Jeff Rabhan, chair of recorded music and an arts professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, said of Gaga’s now-legendary meat dress and string of outrageous getups at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . He also pointed to the positive reaction for Kanye West’s visually stunning VMA performance as further proof that audiences were thirsting for a return of the pop spectacle. “It’s been lacking, and that’s the reason that people are drawn to it,” he said of the chatter that inevitably follows one of West’s unique set pieces. In fact, the rapper has more in store with his 40-minute film-noir project in support of the “Runaway” single , which is not surprising coming from an artist who has always been very tuned in to the importance of having great visuals to accompany his music. In rock music, bands like U2 have always understood the importance of giving their fans something unique, from their PopMart Tour in the late 1990s to their most recent 360 Tour , which included the largest, most elaborate stage ever built for a live show. More contemporary acts like Britney Spears have also done their part, hitting the road for her Circus extravaganza with a stage full of magicians, tumblers and glitzy costumes. On a smaller scale, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert has made glitter bombs and gender-bending videos and performances part of his pop calling card, earning him the distinction of outpacing his onetime rival, season-eight winner Kris Allen, in album sales and concert tickets. What sets some of today’s stars apart, according to Robert J. Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, is the immersive way they live their public lives. “Artists like Gaga and Ke$ha are always in costume,” Thompson said of the outrageous makeup and outfits those pop stars, and other such as Katy Perry, model every time they go out in public. “We have returned to the age of P.T. Barnum, no question about it. But I suppose these things go in cycles, a case you can make if you look at the biggest acts of all time, which were all spectacle-oriented: Madonna, Michael Jackson.” Thompson said outrageous characters have always played a part in popular music, but with the dawn of the video age in 1981, artists had a new medium to explore with flashy videos that added another layer to their radio hits. Then, with the rise of the Internet, the decade-long contraction of the music industry and a renewed emphasis on singles-oriented artists over the past nine years thanks to iTunes, the ability to reach a mass audience just through radio and video began to disappear. “We went into a period where music was being consumed not with a visual spectacular or with the visual of a big album cover, but as an

Travie McCoy Builds On ‘Billionaire’ With New Singles

Travie hopes ‘Need You’ and ‘We’ll Be Alright’ can have some of his first single’s success. By James Montgomery Travie McCoy Photo: MTV News When it comes to fatherhood, Travie McCoy is still learning the ropes. We’re not talking about the trappings of actual fatherhood, mind you — to the best of our knowledge, Travie doesn’t have any kids — but rather the bittersweet reality of raising a single up from infancy, watching it blossom into an massive hit and then having to send it on its way. ” ‘Billionaire’ is still kind of bubbling and doing its thing,” McCoy told MTV News last weekend at his VMA rehearsals in Los Angeles. “It’s kind of like my little son that’s all grown up, and it’s like, ‘All right, either go to school or go in the army. Do whatever you want now. You’re on your own.’ He’s kind of grown up and matured, and now I’m nurturing ‘Need You,’ which is the next single, you know?” But “Need You” is just one of his new projects. The video is still being cut, and so he’s also promoting “We’ll Be Alright,” the next U.K. single off his Lazarus album. The video for that song began making the rounds this week. And he’s not showing signs of slowing down any time soon. “[‘Need You’] is kind of one of the more serious, introspective songs on Lazarus, and visually, the video’s gonna have the same tone,” McCoy said. “And the next single in the U.K. is ‘We’ll Be Alright,’ and that video has already dropped. All my people in the U.K., I know you’re up on ‘We’ll Be Alright,’ [with] the Supergrass [sample]. Everything’s beautiful, man, and there’s still a few more after that, so I’m just gonna ride it.” And while he’s still working Lazarus, McCoy is also finding time to prep Papercut Chronicles II, the new record from Gym Class Heroes . The band is obviously his first love, but at the moment, it’s kind of difficult to fit it into his schedule. Fatherhood, it would seem, is a lot tougher than it appears. “We’re hustling and scrambling on PCC II. Every chance I get — I have little bits of time here and there — I’m spending it all on the next Gym Class record,” he said. “We’re about 16, 17 songs deep. It just keeps growing. … Matt [McGinley]’s on tour with me, playing drums, so we’re working on stuff together while we’re on tour, and [GCH’s] Disashi [Lumumba-Kasongo] and Eric [Roberts] are working on stuff together. The new stuff is so good, man. It’s outrageous.” Related Artists Travie McCoy

Taylor Swift’s Many Muses, From Joe Jonas To Kanye West

Singer/songwriter doesn’t back down from writing about her personal relationships and experiences. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the VMAs on Sunday Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Taylor Swift has a history of writing songs about the men in her life. While the subject of her latest hit, “Mine,” off her upcoming album Speak Now , remains a mystery, Swift hasn’t been shy about expressing her feelings for the likes of Joe Jonas, a guy named Drew and, most recently, we presume, Kanye West. Even when she doesn’t specifically name her muse in a song’s lyrics, she’s doesn’t back down from discussing who her songs are about. Back in 2006, when Swift was only 16, she released her track “Tim McGraw,” inspired by the country singer’s song “Can’t Tell Me Nothin’.” In it, Swift sings, “When you think Tim McGraw, I hope you think of me.” She told , “The song is based on true events — it happened in real life. I had a boyfriend and we had broken up. After the break-up, I wanted him to be reminded of me.” After working the world of country for some time, Swift had a breakthrough hit with her ballad “Teardrops on My Guitar.” While the guy she wrote about, Drew, wasn’t famous, he is one of the few guys she calls out by name in her lyrics. “He showed up in my driveway this Christmas, and it was awkward because it was three years after I wrote the song,” she said. “He was like, ‘Hey.’ It was definitely weird. I was going to a hockey game with my friends, and it was the most drama you could have when you have to go pick up your friends. I got over it. I wrote the song. It’s a venting process.” In 2008, Swift thought her relationship with Joe Jonas was “Forever and Always,” but Jonas reportedly broke up with her over the phone. And Swift wasn’t afraid to open up about her relationship with her famous ex in her song, which appeared on Fearless. “With this situation, I feel like I owed it to my fans to be like, ‘Look, it happened, you weren’t crazy,’ and address it,” she told MTV News. “And I addressed it, and, you know, that’s a chapter in my life that’s closed now.” Finally, Taylor Swift debuted her new ballad, tentatively titled “Innocent,” at the 2010 VMAs . In it, she discusses a man who has lost his path in life, but whose “streaming lights are bright to me.” Given that Swift refers to “new Septembers” (the same month in which the VMAs are held), she is presumably singing about Kanye West. And Swift has made it clear that this next album will be about things and people that featured prominently in her life over the last few years. “For me, I write everything that I live, so you’ve got to give yourself a little bit of time to live a lot of things so you can write about a lot of things. And my only option is to write about what I’ve been through and what I’ve lived. So thankfully, in the past two years, I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about and a lot of things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t,” she said about Speak Now , due in October. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. But just moments after winning his Best New Artist VMA on Sunday, the 16-year-old megastar explained that he’s too busy for love right now. “I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age,” he explained to MTV News. “Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl … we’re constantly traveling and one girl’s not gonna really [work]. You can’t really have one girl.
