Lady Gaga Meat Dress Designer Tells How To Re-Create His VMA Look

Franc Fernandez says Gaga thought the dress ‘smelled good.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the VMAs on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Did you watch Sunday night’s VMAs and wonder how you too can re-create the Franc Fernandez-designed Lady Gaga meat dress ? Well, wonder no more. MTV News caught up with the now-infamous designer and he very simply explained how one makes a dress made entirely of meat. “Go to your butcher, get some good cuts and start sewing,” he said about Gaga’s getup, which was her third look of VMA night. Before her fashions got meaty, the singer wore two gowns — one designed by the late Alexander McQueen and one by Giorgio Armani. However, those ultra-glam garbs were overshadowed by Fernandez’s over-the-top look. “I was approached by [fellow fashion stylist] Nicola Formichetti to create the look. It was planned over a week period,” Fernandez explained about how the dress came to fruition. “It’s always a pleasure working with Nicola and Gaga, the times I have. The process is very easy and quick.” While the process may have been “easy and quick,” Gaga did have to wear the dress for an extended period of time. “She wore it for as long as it was seen on TV, with some additional press photos and for the ‘Ellen’ show ,” he explained, adding that he wasn’t at all worried about the meat spoiling. “There’s been a big debate of whether it smelled or rotted under the lights,” he said. “Gaga herself said it smelled good, because it smelled like meat. I chose the right cuts to make sure the dress kept well.” What’s next for Fernandez, who also lent his talents to Gaga and Beyonc

All Time Low Say Next Album Is ‘More Gritty’

‘We wanted to sound a little bit more like a rock band,’ Alex Gaskarth tells MTV News. By James Montgomery All Time Low Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — All Time Low ‘s last album, the snide-and-shiny Nothing Personal, debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart and thrust them from the fringes to the mainstream spotlight, so it’s sort of surprising to hear them talk about the follow-up, which, from the sound of things, is shaping up to be a very different thing indeed. “We’ve tried to get a little more gritty on this one, I guess, just less polished,” frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News on the VMA white carpet. “We had a very polished sound on the last album, and for what it was, it was perfect, but this time around, we wanted to sound a little bit more like a rock band.” “[There’s] less production, bells and whistles, as they call them,” drummer Rian Dawson added. “And just more … 30 guitars.” That’s a lot of guitars. And perhaps realizing those statements might worry the band’s longtime fans, guitarist Jack Barakat was quick to turn things back, in a jokey, decidedly ATL fashion. “Basically, we’re the new Guns N’ Roses,” he laughed. “This record is going to be our Chinese Democracy. [It’s] never going to come out.” He’s definitely kidding about that last bit; Gaskarth said the band have basically finished the still-untitled album, which is “hopefully” due in January. Working with a team that includes producers Mike Green (who worked on Paramore’s All We Know Is Falling ) and Matt Squire (who did their 2007 album So Wrong, It’s Right ), All Time Low have created an album that’s equally indebted to their past and future, as evidenced by a song called “Time Bomb,” which they’re hoping will be the first single. “We have no idea about that,” Gaskarth said. “There’s a song called ‘Time Bomb’ that I hope gets out there quickly, because we all really like it. But we’ll just have to wait and see.” Are you looking forward to new ATL music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists All Time Low

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Nothing New For ‘Top Model’ Judges

‘We already did that in cycle 10 of ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ Sorry Gaga!’ Jay Manuel says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images While Lady Gaga may have worn her Franc Fernandez meat dress like nobody’s business at the VMAs, it’s hardly her original idea. “America’s Next Top Model” mentors Jay Manuel and J. Alexander are quick to point out that they did the fresh-meat-as-clothing bit years ago. “We already did that in cycle 10 of ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ Sorry Gaga! You know I love you. You know that you’re the true supreme artiste, but we did do a photo shoot with the girls,” Jay Manuel explained to MTV News at the G-Star’s NY RAW Special Edition fashion show in NYC on Tuesday night. The meat-centric “ANTM” episode in question saw the wannabe models wearing various cuts of meat for a photo shoot in New York City’s Meat Packing District. As for Miss J’s take on the whole thing, well, he kept it decidedly Miss J. “That’s why I have nothing to say about Miss Lady Gaga!” Miss J and Jay Manuel aren’t the only two fashionistas weighing in on the look. “The City” star Kelly Cutrone had only nice things to say about Gaga’s steak costume . “I don’t get it. What’s the beef with Gaga — Gaga is the queen of the universe, and no one should say anything negative about her or they will be attacked by her millions of fans,” she said. “I am happy to see her looking so healthy and to see she put a little extra meat on!” New York Fashion Week attendees have been all abuzz over the controversial look. “Behind the Velvet Ropes” hostess Lauren Ezersky said, “She’s cookin! In fact, she needs to cook! … I love the look of it, but I’m not quite sure if I would want to sit next to her! How would they bring that to her? Like, in a freezer!?” Related Photos VMA 2010: Lady Gaga Lookbook Related Artists Lady Gaga

Katy Perry Rocks Concert At Her Old High School

The ‘California Gurl’ gives energetic show for screaming students at her Santa Barbara alma mater, Dos Pueblos. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Katy Perry at her old high school, Dos Pueblos, on Tuesday Photo: MTV News Katy Perry headed back to her hometown of Santa Barbara, California, on Tuesday, where she hit the stage for a raucous performance at her old high school, Dos Pueblos. Rocking out to her hits like “Waking Up in Vegas” and “Hot N Cold,” she performed for the winners of the nationwide Go Back to High School With “You Again” and Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream radio contest. The crowd was rounded out by about 1,000 of Dos Pueblos’ finest students. For Perry, getting the chance to play for a hometown crowd was a special experience. “This is one of my favorite shows! Definitely top 10, maybe top five,” the VMA-nominated singer explained. “I was giving it my all, even though I had, like, a cough and I’m still struggling to get healthy, I was so happy to be here in Santa Barbara.” Perry told MTV News last month that she wrote her latest hit, “Teenage Dream,” in the town she grew up in and still holds the SoCal city close to her heart. “I was so happy to be here in Santa Barbara because Santa Barbara is really my heart and, you know, if [a radio contest concert] would have went down when I was in high school here, I would have freaked,” she said. “I would have totally camped out in those little seats [for] Gwen Stefani, No Doubt. Most definitely they were like my favorite, still are.” So what was Perry like back in the day? “I was kind of a class clown, but I wasn’t as funny as a class clown. I was learning from them and I was also kind of a show-off, still kind of a show-off,” said Perry, who left school early and got her GED to pursue her music career. “I went to homecoming with a senior and that made me feel really cool ’cause when you catch a senior for homecoming or for prom or whatever it is … you made it. So I made it back then, even.” Related Videos Katy Perry Goes Back To High School Related Artists Katy Perry

Kanye West To Return To ‘The Cleveland Show’

Lindsay Lohan and John Mayer get called out in some preview rhymes from season-two premiere. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West and Cleveland Jr. on “The Cleveland Show” Photo: FOX Kanye West is set to reprise his role as Kenny West on “The Cleveland Show” in the show’s season-two premiere. According to Entertainment Weekly, West’s character is down on his luck after being a rapper on the rise and the title character, Cleveland Brown, is attempting to help the high school artist make a comeback. The animated pair work on a track titled “Be-Cleve in Yourself” that will supposedly mark Kenny West’s comeback. “Not long ago, I was lower than Lohan,” he raps. “No plan, a lost man, raising my little girl in a Cadillac Brougham/ My quest success, but my life was a mess/ Poor Kenny West, no zest, and he depressed/ Not dressed to impress/ Matter fact, more stress than John Mayer waiting on his AIDS test.” In May, Kenny West first popped up on “The Cleveland Show” at a rap battle. His character was a hot shot who butted heads with Cleveland Jr. over West’s girlfriend. The two traded cheap shots, and their feud came to a head at the big dance when they directed lyrical barbs at each other. “It’s Kenny sippin’ Henny/ Rhymes slicker than Teflon,” West boasted. “The school been high, I’m the black Zac Efron/ And when I meet a shorty, you know we going backwards/ Pulling more tail than my man John Edwards/ Lumpy, chunky, boogie-eating chump, B/ Acting out of place like Hootie singing country/ Leave my girl alone and get your own tenderoni/ Come on, who are we kidding?/ You’re used to being lonely.” Junior fired back, though, with a takedown rap of his own. “Mess with me, homeboy, you don’t wanna risk it,” he spits. “I run you like Mrs. Freemon’s god-awful brisket.” In trademark fashion,

Fabolous Stops By MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live’!

Loso answers fans’ Twitter questions and (maybe) breaks down elements of his signature tending topics on Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Jonathan Leibson/ WireImage Fabolous walks a fine line, maintaining his presence on the underground mixtape circuit and cultivating a mainstream persona with his album releases. His most recent project, There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music EP, stems from the similarly titled mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service. Both collections serve as a warm-up to Fab’s next album, Loso’s Way 2. According to the Def Jam rapper, if he had to choose another MC to take a turn on the mixtape scene, his choice would come down to two fellow New York lyricists. “A Nas mixtape would be crazy, a Hov one too,” he told MTV News. “We haven’t seen any of the icons do it [in a while]. I think somewhere, we need a place where Hov doesn’t have to talk corporate and Nas doesn’t have to get too deep on us. We need one of those. I just wanna hear Nas [rapping], ‘Splittin’ Phillies, sippin’ on Baileys with three Israelis.’ I don’t know if he’s still in that space,” Fab said, reciting one of the God MC’s memorable mixtape freestyles. “A lot of things have transpired since. And I wanna hear Hov talk his thing. He still talks his thing and Nas still talks his thing, but I wanna see them in their mixtape essence.” Fabolous will talk mixtapes and more on Thursday when he appears on MTV News’ “RapFix Live” live stream with Sway on MTV.com at 1 p.m. ET. So, wondering why Loso still releases mixtapes after all his success? Ready for the inside scoop on his next project? Want to ask Fabolous about his recent rift with Soulja Boy Tell’em ? Tweet questions to the Brooklyn MC at @MTVNews with #rapfixlive or upload video questions to him at Your.MTV.com and Sway may get them on-air. Jay-Z And Eminem Bring Fans To ‘Tears’ At Final Stadium Show

‘Jay’s struggle and Eminem’s recovery, I think it comes off as incredible,’ fan/ New Edition luminary Michael Bivins says. By James Dinh, with reporting by Hilary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage All good things come to an end as Jay-Z and Eminem wrapped up the fourth and final concert of their Home and Home shows on Tuesday night. The MCs, who brought out a slew of special guests to make the event even more spectacular, had fans in awe as they left Yankee Stadium. MTV News caught up with a few of the show’s attendees who described the hip-hop extravaganza as nothing short of incredible. “It was wonderful to see two of the greatest MCs in the history [of hip-hop], Jay-Z and Eminem, come together and put this on at Yankee Stadium,” Eddie Blackmon said. Among the devoted fans was Michael Bivins, a founding member of the illustrious R&B/hip-hop groups New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. Bivins said that, in the end, the two rappers’ personal tribulations have helped them to succeed. “These brothers have been through something — Jay’s struggle and Eminem’s recovery — and it comes across as entertainment, and I think it comes off as incredible,” he said. The presence of two superstar MCs on one stage was thrilling, but the show’s guest appearances also earned rave reviews: Kanye West, Beyonc

Sara Bareilles Tops Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Eminem’s Recovery moves back up from #3 to #2. By Gil Kaufman Sara Bareilles’ Kaleidoscope Heart Photo: Epic Three months into its epic chart run, Eminem ‘s Recovery continues to provide stiff competition to chart newcomers. In one of the most modest #1 debut showings of the year, “Love Song” singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles will top the Billboard 200 next week with Kaleidoscope Heart, which moved 90,000 copies to snatch the pole position, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That easily bested the #45 debut of her first album, 2007’s Little Voice, and it was just enough to keep Slim Shady at bay. The resurgent rapper moved up a notch to #2 as Recovery sold another 81,000 copies to push it over the 2.5 million mark. If sales continue at this pace, Em could soon surpass the year’s top-selling album to date, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now, which has racked up 2.6 million in sales over the past eight months. Also debuting in the top 10 next week are the latest from Slipknot side group Stone Sour with Audio Secrecy (#6, 46,000); indie band Interpol , whose self-titled fourth album moved 38,000 copies (#7); and Florida rockers Anberlin , who hit #9 with Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place (31,000). The rest of the top 10: Now 35 (#3, 63,000); Katy Perry , Teenage Dream (#4, 59,000); Disturbed , Asylum (#5, 57,000, down 68 percent from last week’s #1 debut); Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#8, 35,000); and the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam soundtrack (#10, 31,000). Fantasia ‘s comeback, Back to Me, continued its slide down the charts. It shed six more spots in week three to land at #11 on sales of 29,000, during a slow week when most of the top 20 saw double-digit sales drop-offs. Further down the line, rock icon Jerry Lee Lewis hits #30 with Mean Old Man (11,000), Minneapolis rap crew Atmosphere land at #38 with the EP compilation To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy (9,000), and Swedish dance machine Robyn comes in at #41 with Body Talk Pt. 2 (8,000). It was virtually the same story on the iTunes albums chart, as Bareilles took the top spot, followed by Eminem, Disturbed, Perry, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Atmosphere, Interpol, Stone Sour, Anberlin and “Camp Rock.” The iTunes singles chart was also mostly unchanged, with Bruno Mars taking the top spot with “Just the Way You Are,” followed by Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” Em’s “Lose Yourself,” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It” and Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love.” iTunes doesn’t provide sales figures, but you can be sure Flo Rida was glad to see that his new single, “Club Can’t Handle Me,” came in at #8, followed by Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” and B.o.B’s “Magic.” Bareilles will probably have a short time in the sun, as next week brings the chart debut of Linkin Park ‘s A Thousand Suns , Trey Songz ‘s Passion, Pain & Pleasure, Killers singer Brandon Flowers ‘ debut solo album, Flamingo, and Weezer ‘s indie debut, Hurley , as well as new albums from Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant and insurgent country star Jamey Johnson .
