Soulja Boy Tell’em Plans ‘Teenage Millionaire’ Book

Covering his experiences in the music industry, book will be released in conjunction with Soulja Boy’s album The DeAndre Way. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Soulja Boy Tell ’em Photo: MTV News Soulja Boy Tell’em has mastered the Internet and proven successful in the music industry, and now the “Pretty Boy Swag” rapper is set to try his hand at book publishing. The rapper plans to release a book called “Teenage Millionaire” in conjunction with his next album, The DeAndre Way , scheduled for release next month. Soulja Boy told MTV News during his recent appearance on “RapFix Live,” that his tome will be about his navigation through the music business. “It talks about me making my first million dollars at 17 years old,” Soulja Boy explained. “I talk about how my life changed. It talks about the music industry, everything I learned about the music industry — how I got into the music industry with my mind set, all the ins and outs that I go through. All the chapters break down my beliefs and what steps and methods I took to get in this position. I just go and break [them] down into detail. I just want all my fans to read it when my album drops and have a good read and feel where I’m coming from.” SB is currently enjoying the success of “Pretty Boy Swag,” which rests at #12 on Billboard ‘s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The rapper is in Los Angeles this week to shoot the video for one of his next singles, “Blowing Kisses.” In July, Soulja Boy told MTV News that “Speakers Going Hammer” would be his next single. “Basically, it’s all about the sound of the music,” he said about the Boi-1da-produced track. “I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars, another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it’s another hit.” Related Artists Soulja Boy Tell’em

B.o.B Set To Open Eminem/Jay-Z Detroit, NYC Shows

VMA nominee will join the superstar duo on stops at Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: Lollapalooza Jay-Z and Eminem will have some company with them during their back-to-back Detroit shows at Comerica Park later this week, and then again when the duo hit New York’s Yankee Stadium. One of B.o.B’s managers, music-industry vet T.J. Chapman, wrote a not-so-thinly-veiled message on Twitter indicating that the VMA nominee is set to open for the two superstar MCs. “I’m excited about heading to Detroit tomorrow for a few days,” Chapman wrote late Tuesday night. “B.o.B is performing @ Tiger Stadium w/ GUESS WHO & WHO????” Jay and Em are of course scheduled to perform at the Detroit Tigers’ new stadium (the team’s old ballpark was known as Tiger Stadium) this Thursday and Friday. A label representative for B.o.B had no comment when contacted by MTV News on Wednesday (September 1). The Atlanta rapper’s other manager, Brian “B.Rich” Richardson, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that his client would also open for the superstar duo during their New York residency in two weeks, slated for September 13 and 14 in the Bronx. “New York & Detroit, B.o.B is gonna open up for @EMINEM! and @JayZ!!!” Richardson wrote . The buzz for the twin pair of concerts continues to build. This week, Jay-Z and the Yankees unveiled co-branded paraphernalia in honor of the New York performances: Jerseys, T-shirts and hats featuring Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 insignia will adorn items alongside the team’s classic interlocking “NY” logo. Fans got a small preview of the much-anticipated pairing earlier this summer when Eminem and Jay-Z visited the “Late Show With David Letterman.” Both MCs performed, and later Eminem delivered the show’s trademark Top 10 list, while Jay-Z sat for an interview with Letterman. ‘Going The Distance’ Stars Share Romantic Gestures Gone Awry

Drew Barrymore recalls an ex’s unsuccessful love letter, while Justin Long’s flower purchase backfires. By Kara Warner Justin Long and Drew Barrymore Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images The topic of love and relationships is a loaded one. It’s full of drama, angst, joy — basically a smorgasbord of complex emotions that, no matter how serious and life-changing, can also be rife for comedic interpretation. One such interpretation is Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s R-rated romp “Going the Distance,” which opens Friday. In the film, the are-they-or-aren’t-they-dating Barrymore and Long play a new couple who try to make a long-distance relationship work. There are expensive plane tickets, romantic gestures, arguments, etc. Speaking to the romantic gestures, because there are a few in the film, we asked Barrymore and Long if they had ever had one backfire. “I once got sent an e-mail that was written in a sarcastic tone, but the person buried the lead and didn’t say he was joking,” Barrymore said of an ex’s attempt at a love letter. “So everything in it was as horrible as you can imagine. That wasn’t funny. That was a really poorly executed romantic gesture. I remember another boyfriend, he bought me a cameo [silhouette pendant], and he said it reminded him of me. And I thought, ‘This old, silhouetted lady reminds you of me? Huh. OK.’ ” Long (who was not the giver of the aforementioned cameo) revealed that his good-intentions-gone-bad gesture involved an unfortunate mix-up of an ex’s preference in flowers. “This was actually a Valentine’s Day thing,” he said. “I went to the florist, and I saw these amazing orchids. There were, like, six orchids. It was tons of money … but I thought, ‘I’m going to do it. These are beautiful, and I’m pretty sure this person loves orchids,’ ” Long recalled. “I brought them home. She was always so appreciative of just the smallest gestures I did, so I was like, ‘Her head’s going to explode.’ ” Unfortunately for Long, his memory was a little skewed. “She was like [ he winces ] ‘I … oh … thank you,’ ” Long re-enacted. “She had this story that was like a really troubling, traumatic experience that had happened to her that involved orchids that she had told me. I knew there was something with orchids, I just didn’t remember that it was an awful association. It was bad. She was molested by a guy named Fred Orchid,” he joked. Justin Bieber Fans Hope To Squeeze Into His 3-D Movie At NYC Show

‘I’ll probably cry if I see myself,’ one die-hard says of Biebs’ upcoming flick, which is filming at Madison Square Garden concert. By Peter de Saint Phalle Justin Bieber (file) Photo: Jeffrey Ufberg/ Getty Images NEW YORK — A sea of tween girls clad in purple flooded the steps of Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (August 31) as Justin Bieber fans made their way into the sold-out arena. It was no secret that the show was going to be a special one. Director John Chu previously revealed that much of the upcoming Justin Bieber 3-D movie would be filmed during the night’s performance. Fans traveled far and wide with hopes of making it onscreen. “Me and my friend drove from Virginia for five hours,” Erin Sweeney told MTV News. “Since I’ll see [the 3-D film] in the theaters, I’ll probably cry if I see myself.” When fans were asked whether Biebs had a shot at winning Best New Artist at the upcoming VMAs , most were pretty confident in the teen dream — especially since fan voting is involved. “Most of the fans he has are really big fans,” Bailey Solomons reasoned. “So if they vote for him, they’ll vote for him every single day, so he has a good chance.” Some Bieber enthusiasts proved you did not have to be between the ages of 8 and 18 to enjoy Bieber’s music. “Love has no age,” Amanda Farina said when asked if she had Bieber fever. “We caught it. We heard the song on the radio, and then suddenly we bought it on iTunes, and then it was a phenomenon. It doesn’t matter how old we are. We just love him.” How excited would you be to end up in Bieber’s 3-D movie? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Justin Bieber Brings His My World Tour To NYC Related Artists Justin Bieber

Lady Gaga To Perform At John Lennon Tribute Show

Perry Farrell, Iggy Pop, RZA also join Yoko Ono’s We Are Plastic Ono Band in Los Angeles next month. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images There’s no word yet if she’s going to take a seat at the signature white piano again, but Lady Gaga has signed on to perform at one of the John Lennon tribute concerts taking place in Los Angeles in October. According to Yoko Ono’s website , Gaga will join a star-studded list for a pair of We Are Plastic Ono Band shows at the Orpheum Theater on October 1 and 2 that will include performances by Lennon’s widow Ono, Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, experimental solo artist Tune-Yards, punk icon Iggy Pop and Lennon’s youngest son, Sean. The shows will pay tribute to Lennon on what would have been the ex-Beatle’s 70th birthday. Gaga is slated to take the stage on the second night on a bill that also features married Sonic Youth duo Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. Among the other acts listed on the poster promoting the show: Cornelius, actress Carrie Fisher, director/actor Vincent Gallo, Harper Simon, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Yuka Honda and Haruomi Hosono. Though her name stands out on the bill, Gaga’s inclusion is not that unusual. She performed “Imagine,” Lennon’s signature song of hope, at last October’s Human Rights Campaign gathering in Washington, D.C., where she tweaked the song’s lyrics a bit to make references to the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard. The shows are just one of the ways Ono is celebrating what would have been a milestone birthday for Lennon. EMI will reissue spiffed-up versions of Lennon’s solo albums on October 5, along with some previously unreleased home recordings. Green Day Recording Live Album

Band announced live disc at show last week in Denver. By Gil Kaufman Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ WireImage It’s been less than five years since their first official live album, but Green Day are already working on a second one. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong announced at a show in Denver, Colorado, on Friday that the group is recording performances for a follow-up to 2005’s Bullet in a Bible. The veteran punk trio has only released one new studio album since Bible came out, last year’s song cycle 21st Century Breakdown , but Armstrong hinted at the show that the new live disc might contain some rarities when he set up the unreleased gem “Cigarettes and Valentines.” “Hey, I just want to tell you something right now. We’re recording a live f—ing album right now,” Armstrong told the crowd at the Comfort Dental Amphitheater in Denver on Saturday, video of which was posted on YouTube . “So check it out, we’re gonna play a brand-new song. … It ain’t that brand-new. This song is called ‘Cigarettes and Valentines.’ ” The band then broke into the classic three-chord blitzkrieg, which, as Armstrong noted, is not exactly new, but hasn’t officially been released. The tune was recorded in 2003 while Green Day were working on the follow-up to the 2002 B-sides compilation Shenanigans for an album that was supposed to bear the same title. But after the master tapes for the project were stolen from the studio, Green Day scrapped the whole thing and got to work on the disc that would revive their career and make them international superstars, American Idiot. A spokesperson for the band’s label could not be reached at press time to confirm the recording of the live album or provide details on when the disc might be released. Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns: Kid A, All Grown Up?

Bigger Than the Sound sees parallels between LP’s ambitious new effort and Radiohead’s seminal album, also a departure when released 10 years ago. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda Photo: Flanigan/ FilmMagic According to legend, in August of 2000, a group of clearly terrified Capitol Records executives were outfitted with headphones, loaded into a series of unmarked vans and driven down the Pacific Coast Highway, where they listened to Radiohead’s Kid A for the first time. It was an inspired — not to mention particularly apt — premiere for the album, and though the whole thing is rather apocryphal, it certainly made for nice copy at the time. I only mention that because in August of 2010, a clearly relaxed Warner Bros. publicist sat me down in her office and allowed me one of the first listens to Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns. There were no headphones or unmarked vans or winding, windswept vistas — budgetary cuts, one can only assume — just an iced coffee and a notepad, which was sort of a shame, because if ever there was an album that deserves the Radiohead treatment, it’s this one. Since, as you’ll probably discover in the coming weeks, A Thousand Suns is most definitely Linkin Park’s Kid A. Well, maybe not technically, but, at the very least, spiritually. Like Kid A, Suns is an album of great ambition and equally great scope, a fearless effort that takes the band to places they’ve never been: darker and doomier places, louder and (in sections) heavier places too. Like Kid A, it is so completely different from the band’s previous efforts that it will almost certainly stand as the line of demarcation between everything that came before and everything that will come after. And, much like Kid A, there just aren’t a whole lot of guitars on it. Instead, A Thousand Suns is washed in ominous electronics, jarring percussion and an unshakeable, unyielding post-millennial tension. The latter is nothing new for the band — their 2007 Minutes to Midnight dealt, in parts, with the politics of George W. Bush and the tragedy of Katrina — but here, they’ve steeped the entire album in a thick coat of dread. It’s a transition underscored in the repeated refrain of “God bless us every one/ We’re a broken people living under loaded gun,” first heard in opening number “The Requiem” and then later on in lead single “The Catalyst.” And in moments like the beginning of “When They Come for Me,” when chirping crickets are gradually drowned out by the sound of artillery, or, most notably, in the use of recorded, world-weary speeches by scientist Robert Oppenheimer, political activist Mario Savio and Martin Luther King Jr. Each of the speeches are appropriately monolithic — Oppenheimer’s famous quoting of the Bhagavad Gita after the first testing of the atomic bomb in 1945, Savio’s terrifyingly prescient “bodies upon the gears” screed in 1964, King’s 1967 lament that the horrors of modern life “cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love” — and it’s telling that they all come from the last millennium. Because, really what A Thousand Suns (which takes its name from Oppenheimer’s speech) is trying to say is that none of these problems, these terrors or these specters that haunt us in 2010 are particularly new. Quite the opposite, in fact. We’ve just chosen to ignore the warnings. And now it might be too late. And that’s another reason it reminds me so much of Kid A. But that’s where the similarities between the albums end. Because rather than hide their fears in a claustrophobic din (as Radiohead did), Linkin Park make the conscious decision to rage against them. They’re not willing to go down without a fight, and it’s in those moments — the massive roar of “Waiting for the End,” the thunderous, squealing “Blackout” (Chester Bennington’s best moment on the album) and the muscle-bound might of “Wretches and Kings” — that the album truly soars. And it bears mentioning that for all its mechanized morose, there are some decidedly uplifting moments too. Most notable among them is “Iridescent,” which starts with just a piano line, then slowly heads skyward on interlocking guitars (they do in fact exist on the album) and explodes in a rousing chorus of “Remember all the sadness and frustration/ And let go.” It all ends with an acoustic-based number, “The Messenger,” which features Bennington going full-bore and culminates in this lyric: “When life leaves us blind/ Loves keeps us kind.” And perhaps that’s the real message of the album, that no matter how far gone things may be, humanity isn’t beyond saving. What separates man from machine is our capacity to love, and despite all evidence to the contrary, there are still things worth believing in. All of that may seem crazy, but Linkin Park seem just insane enough to buy into it. And they want you to as well. After all, at this point, it’s about all we have left. So while A Thousand Suns may be dark, sprawling, discordant, ambitious and an all-out game changer, Kid A it’s not. This one’s optimistic. Linkin Park are performing at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, which will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the Best New Artist video through September 12. Kanye West May Be Filming ‘Movie Companion’ To Album

Rapper has been tweeting about shooting in Prague. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/ WireImage Kanye West is in a creative groove right now, finishing his own album, doing a remix for Justin Bieber and announcing plans for a joint LP with Jay-Z . In addition to all his musical ventures, the rapper is working on a “movie companion” to his upcoming album, a source with knowledge of the project told MTV News. Photos from the set appeared on blogs on Wednesday (September 1). The images do not appear to be from any particular scene, though, as West looks to be in between takes from filming; one image shows West walking over to a waiting deer. “On set of the movie,” ‘Ye wrote in a Twitter message last week. “This doe just refuses to sit still. … I told the deer … ‘what would Bambi do?’ & she looked at me like I was crazy.” The rapper has been writing messages via Twitter about his overseas adventures, particularly about details surrounding the shoot. “Last day in Prague,” he wrote late last week. “We’ve shot some good stuff so far … really good … NO! I mean REALLY GOOD! “Just wrapped for the day,” he continued later. “Been shooting 16 hour days. … I’m so excited. … It’s like a child’s delusions become reality!” A representative for West did not respond to a request for comment from MTV News. It’s unclear as of press time which director is attached to the project and whether the film will be bundled with West’s forthcoming album. His last album, 808s & Heartbreaks, featured a Spike Jonze-directed short, “We Were Once a Fairytale,” inspired by the track “See You in My Nightmares” featuring Lil Wayne. The movie was an iTunes only release. Related Photos What Has Kanye West Been Up To This Past Year? The Inspiration For Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Related Artists Kanye West

Jay-Z’s Yankee Memorabilia Is A Home Run, Fans Say

‘The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds,’ one fan says of Hov endorsing limited-run apparel ahead of concerts with Eminem. By MTV News staff Jay-Z and Yankees merchandise at Yankee Stadium Photo: Rya Backer/ MTV News Jay-Z already has one clothing line in Rocawear, and now that the Brooklyn rapper has partnered with the Yankees to co-brand threads in anticipation of his and Eminem’s September concerts , does Hov have a new empire on his hands? Well, not quite, since the Jay-Z/Yankee pact is only for a limited time . But MTV News hit the Bronx to get the word on whether the partnership is a home run. “I thought it was pretty cool, I think it’s cool that he’s doing stuff with the Yankees,” Paulette Esparza told MTV News. “The design is cool.” The line features an array of T-shirts, jerseys with S. Carter and the number four printed on the back (Jay’s birthday is December 4) and a series of fitted hats, including an all-black Yankees cap with The Blueprint 3 insignia on the side. The memorabilia is on sale, only at Yankee Stadium, through September 14. Despite the limited run, interest in the items appears to be high. (It remained unclear at press time whether Eminem would strike a similar deal with his hometown Detroit Tigers baseball team.) “I really like the hat, the hat is pretty cool,” Lauren Mastroianni said while visiting the ballpark. “I was just about to say that,” her friend Mike Nalafronte chimed in about the fitted cap. “With the emblem on it, I like that.” The marriage between Jay-Z and the Yankees began last year as the storied baseball franchise marched toward the World Series, which they eventually captured over the Philadelphia Philles in six games last October. Jay’s “Empire State of Mind” (featuring Alicia Keys) became the unofficial anthem of the team after captain Derek Jeter used the track for his at-bat music. Jay-Z then performed the number with Alicia Keys before Game 2 in New York and later rode with the team during their championship parade. The song also became the rapper’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and the Yankees earned their 27th championship. “The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds, isn’t it,” tourist Alex Matthewson noted.
