Ice Cube Recruits Sons To Rhyme On I Am The West

‘They still ain’t better than me,’ Cube says of kids OMG and Doughboy. ‘But they dope.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Gangsta rap made Ice Cube do it, but the veteran rapper acknowledges that his sons have had a childhood far different from his own Los Angeles upbringing. So when he recruited his two boys — OMG and Doughboy — to appear on his upcoming album, I Am the West, Cube had to make sure the tracks they rapped on were a good fit. He ended up featuring them on the Bangladesh-produced “She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own” and “Y’all Know How I Am.” “When I heard the beat [on ‘She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own’], I wanted to do a song with my sons, and I felt like the beat feels young to me,” Cube told MTV News. “I didn’t want them to come out on something that really wasn’t their personality. Their personality, they ain’t from the ‘hood. They didn’t have to grow up like that, like I did. So I wanted them to do something that showed their personality. I put them on a track that wasn’t strictly a gangsta rap track, that was fun and something they could come off on.” OMG and Doughboy are following in the footsteps of other young artists who hope to shine on the mic like their famous fathers, including Cory Gunz (Peter Gunz), Justice (GZA) and Lil Eazy-E (Eazy-E) . The former N.W.A. star is a fan of his sons, naturally, but he said the pair still have some work to do to match his skills. “They dope,” he said of his offspring. “They still ain’t better than me, but they dope. I’m impressed. I’m really impressed by what they doing.” What do you think of Cube’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ice Cube

Hey Monday Say ‘The Show Must Go On’

‘Quitting a band you’re not happy being a part of can’t really wait,’ HM’s Cassadee Pope says of departed bassist Jersey Moriarty. By James Montgomery Hey Monday Photo: MTV News Last week, Hey Monday sent their fanbase into a panic when they announced that they were parting ways with beloved bassist Jersey Moriarty. They went to great lengths to assure fans that the split was amicable, writing on their blog , “this is in no way, shape or form a bitter break between us,” a sentiment Moriarty echoed on his own blog . Still, both bandmates and departing bassist seemed to admit that a change was needed. On the surface, there was nothing particularly new about this news. Bands part ways with bassists on a fairly regular basis, after all, but word of Jersey’s departure came exactly one month after HM frontwoman Cassadee Pope took to the band’s blog to announce — somewhat dejectedly — that their much-anticipated sophomore album, Beneath It All, was being pared down to just an EP. “I wish we had known that the full-length would be coming a little later before telling everyone about it, but there’s nothing we can do about it now,” Pope wrote. So, within the span of one month, the band lost an album and a bass player … which sort of raises a bigger question: What, exactly, is going on with Hey Monday? On Monday, Pope sat down with MTV News to give us an answer. “It’s really, really hectic, but it’s a good hectic,” she said of where things are right now. “With the whole Jersey thing, that really sucked and we were upset about it, but we were more upset about losing a friend, and we never really sat down and were worried about ‘Oh my God, is this the end of the band?’ Because the three of us [Pope, Mike Gentile and Alex Lipshaw] are so passionate about it, and we’ve talked about it a million times, about how this is our dream come true, and not to say any of us could quit tomorrow — you never know. But no one has to worry, the show must go on, and we’re really excited and nothing’s going to stop us. “The album thing, that’s just a case of me loving to write,” she continued. “And since we have some months to spare, [we thought], ‘Why not go and try to write songs that are better than the songs we have right now?’ We love the album, but if I can go in and write some ones that are better, why not? We want it to be the best album possible.” Pope said that Hey Monday are now aiming to have their second full-length in stores by March, and in the meantime, they’ve recruited Gentile’s brother to fill in for Moriarty on bass for the upcoming tour. Things are very much full-steam ahead, even if, over the last month, the band has learned to take things one day at a time. Especially since, when Moriarty decided to leave the band, they were already well into the promo cycle for their EP. “It was a little bit of a surprise, just because the record was about to come out, and we had done all the promo shots, we had finished everything. The timing was definitely the worst timing in the entire world, but something like quitting a band that you’re not happy being a part of can’t really wait,” Pope said. “You have to do it when you need to, and, you know, he made it very clear that this isn’t what he wants to do and, although we think this lifestyle is extremely easy and fun, to him maybe it was different, and he just wanted to go home and live a normal life.” In keeping with the tone of her earlier announcement, Pope maintained that Hey Monday have no ill will toward Moriarty … quite the opposite, in fact. “He’s probably going to continue writing his own music, and maybe that was another thing too, because I do most of the writing and he’s also a writer and maybe that wasn’t sitting well with him,” she said. “There’s a lot of reasons that we all talked about that we think had a lot to do with him leaving, but it’s not a bitter thing at all, we keep in touch and we’ll make sure that he’s doing okay.” Are you sad to hear Hey Monday and bassist Jersey have parted ways? Ke$ha Breaks Through To The Big Time: A VMA Cheat Sheet!

‘Tik Tok’ singer/nominee racked up massive digital downloads, opened for Rihanna and survived ‘SNL’ on road to Video Music Awards. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images She is, without question, one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whirling, hard-partying pop oddity (who may also be a genius) with a #1 album and a boatload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a few enemies . She even has under her star-spangled belt, her very own, very public WTF debacle in the form of a rather, uh, divisive “Saturday Night Live” performance .

Mariah Carey Is ‘Spiritual’ About Pregnancy, Husband Nick Cannon Says

Neither Cannon nor Carey have confirmed rumors Mariah is expecting their first child. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Is she or isn’t she? While many of Nick Cannon’s and Mariah Carey’s recent comments would lead fans to believe that the singer is indeed expecting a baby, it seems that no one will own up to anything until the singer is good and ready to make an announcement herself. “I think ‘superstitious’ might be the wrong word,” Cannon explained to Usweekly.com about all the speculation surrounding whether or not his wife is pregnant. “I think it’s more of a spiritual thing, like trying to stay true and stay private for as long as you possibly can. She wants to keep as much privacy as she possibly can.” “She’ll talk when she’s ready to talk,” he explained, adding that she is feeling “good” and currently hard at work on a new album in Los Angeles. He joked, “I love kids, I’m all about kids. I’m a big kid! Octomom. Nine kids at once. Whatever happens, whatever life God blesses you with, you have to take it and appreciate it.” While neither Cannon nor Carey has confirmed or denied anything regarding the speculation, Carey did coyly address rumors last week in a blog post to her fans. “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes. But I am very superstitious,” she wrote on her website on Wednesday. “When the time is right, everyone will know — even Cindi Berger [my publicist].” Despite his wife appearing at a recent concert in maternity clothes, Cannon continues to dodge the subject, even when addressing the rumors on his radio show earlier this month. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it time and time again — when my wife feels like talking about whatever she wants to talk about, you will hear it directly from her,” he said. “We all know it’s extremely personal, and it is for a woman to deal with things with her body, and especially when dealing with the idea of childbirth and all that stuff. “That’s something you want to keep near and dear and as close to you as you possibly can, until you’re 100 percent sure, in any situation,” he continued. “There’s a certain time limit you’re supposed to wait before you can actually officially say that you are and all that stuff. You don’t want to mislead anybody.” Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon

Bristol Palin, Mark Ballas Paired For ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Palin will compete alongside Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and ‘The Hills’ star Audrina Patridge this season. By Jocelyn Vena Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas on “Good Morning America” Tuesday Photo: ABC After lots of rumors and speculation , “Dancing With The Stars” fans learned Monday (August 30) that the likes of “Hills” star Audrina Patridge, “Jersey Shore” star The Situation and David Hasselhoff would compete on the next season of ABC’s hit . On Tuesday, Bristol Palin appeared on “Good Morning America” to talk about competing for the show’s coveted mirror-ball trophy. Palin, who will dance with two-time champ Mark Ballas, said that she agreed to do the show because she was looking to try something new. “I was excited to jump on board and be a part of something that was positive and fun, leave the drama behind and get out of there for a while and be in California,” she said. She did let her parents — one of whom is 2008 Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin — know about her new venture before it was announced. “I gave [my parents] a little bit of a heads-up, like, ‘Hey, Mom! I signed a contract with ‘Dancing with The Stars.’ ” Palin is looking forward to showing off a new side of herself. “I want people to see this side of me and my work ethic and see my personality,” she explained. “We’re starting from scratch. I’m really looking forward to getting outside of that box and doing something new. I am trying to coordinate myself and get some rhythm and stuff … it’s gonna be an awesome experience. Hard work is definitely going to have to be put into it. I want to have fun and, like I said, step outside my comfort zone.” Ballas had no doubt that he would eventually “pull out her dancing demon and get her going,” and he added that the two are still introducing themselves to one another. “I think you have to get to know each other as quickly as you can and learn about your partner cause everyone is different and everyone has different learning curves,” he said. “You have a few weeks to train … the main thing is to focus on yourself and make sure you’re happy with what you’re doing.” More couples will be announced on Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” The new season of “Dancing With The Stars” kicks off September 20. Lady Gaga Previews New Song, ‘Living On The Radio’

Gaga previewed the piano ballad at a show in St. Paul on Monday night. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Lady Gaga gave her Little Monsters another sneak peek at her upcoming album on Monday night during a show in St. Paul, Minnesota, when she pulled back the cover on the song “Living on the Radio.” The gentle piano ballad has a nostalgic feel. In it, Gaga gives herself a kind of pep talk about fame and fortune, throws a loving shout out to her adoring fans and pats herself on the back for finally realizing her ambition of getting on the radio. “Baby, you must be free/ Keep living on the radio/ That’s your dream,” sings Gaga, who at the age of 24 has already charted six #1 hits between her debut, The Fame, and its sequel, The Fame Monster, as well as notching 25 million singles downloads and near ubiquity on the radio over the past 18 months. “Baby, you’ve got a friend/ And so many little monsters/ Keep living on the radio/ And when there’s nowhere to go/ And all your friends are gone/ And you’ve only got your daddy to call/ You’re gonna be alright, honey/ Because your songs are on the radio.” In the classic tradition of the road tune, Gaga laments the loneliness of living out of a suitcase and lonely nights spent away from home. It helps that, in her case, she’s traveling on a “road paved in gold,” which clearly makes it a bit less of a drag. There are also nods to champagne, caviar and sold-out shows, which also presumably make a tour bus that much easier to manage. It’s the second song from Gaga’s still-untitled album, which the singer has been previewing during her Monster Ball Tour , coming on the heels of “You and I,” which she debuted in late June at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara ball. It’s unknown if either song will make the cut on the disc, which Gaga has described as “utter liberation” and frequent Gaga producer RedOne said will be “shocking.” What do you think of Gaga’s new song? Ice Cube Explains Dr. Dre’s I Am The West Absence

‘I don’t feel bad, because Snoop can’t find him either,’ Cube laughs. By Jayson Rodriguez Ice Cube Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Ice Cube might rep the West on his new album, appropriately titled I Am the West, but the legendary Left Coast rapper is missing one important link: Dr. Dre. The former N.W.A groupmates weren’t able to connect on Cube’s project, slated for release independently September 21. Ice Cube said his and Dre’s schedules weren’t able to align. “I didn’t get a chance to work with Dre on this record,” Cube told MTV News from Skyline Studios in Manhattan, where he previewed his album for press. “He’s been M.I.A. for two to three months now. But I don’t feel bad, because Snoop can’t find him either,” he laughed. “I think, really, it’s because people expect so much from him,” he continued. “People expect, when Dre does a record, it [will] change the trajectory of music. Not just be an album and it come out and be good. It has to come and take us in a different direction. And that’s a lot of pressure.” Cube was able to recruit a stable of upstart producers and chart-toppers like Bangladesh (Lil Wayne, Beyonc
