Concertgoer Leaps To Death At Swell Season Show

The band is ‘shocked and saddened’ by the tragedy. By Mawuse Ziegbe Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard of The Swell Season (file) Photo: Jason Merritt/ FilmMagic A man reportedly committed suicide at a concert featuring the band The Swell Season last Thursday. According to The Associated Press, 32-year-old San Jose resident Michael Edward Pickels leapt to his death in front of an audience of hundreds at the band’s show at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Rick Sung said that Pickels jumped from a roof shielding the stage around 10 p.m. and fell onto the stage near Season frontman Glen Hansard. Hansard reportedly stopped playing and approached Pickels’ body. He was later pronounced dead after attempts to revive him failed. “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at the August 19th show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends,” the group said a statement posted on their website. “Making and performing music is what the band has always done in good times and in bad. Our hope is that in this communal experience tonight we can somehow help our own grieving process after what we just witnessed. The show will most certainly be different than any other we have ever played.” The duo, who are known for winning an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008, added that they plan to continue their current tour. According to their website, Season has shows scheduled for Saturday (August 21) and Sunday. “We wish to continue to be sensitive to family and friends of this individual and hope that in performing it is not viewed as a selfish act. We have not come to this decision lightly,” the band said. “We continue to have them at the forefront of our minds and hearts.” Related Artists The Swell Season

Wiz Khalifa Declines Drake’s Offer To Join Tour

The Pittsburgh MC tells XXL he’s flattered but has to ‘keep focusing’ on his own work. By Mawuse Ziegbe Wiz Khalifa Photo: Rostrum Records It looks like fans will have to wait to catch Drake and Wiz Khalifa on the same bill. In a much-watched Ustream convo with fans on Thursday, Drizzy extended an invitation to Khalifa to join his upcoming Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour . However, the Pittsburgh MC said he won’t be added to the Nightmares lineup, which also features Clipse and Bun B, and has decided to focus on his own Waken Baken string of dates. “No disrespect to [Drake] or anybody else who might wanna see me do some more collaborative things, but to keep building and keep my brand as strong as what it is, I gotta keep focusing on what it is,” Khalifa told XXLmag.com on Friday (August 20). “This is my first tour that I got coming up, the Waken Baken Tour. I gotta at least kick that off and make that what it is so we can do 10 more.” The Kush & OJ MC clarified that although he’ll be working the performance circuit solo, it’s all love when it comes to Drake. Khalifa confided that Drizzy’s offer proves he’s on the right track. “Just the fact of cuz even extending his hand and me being on his radar is tight to me. It just lets me know that I’m doing what I need to be doing as far as staying relevant and staying poppin’,” Khalifa said. “But I think to keep me poppin’ and keep me relevant I gotta stay building on top of what I’m doing and what I been doing.” Khalifa also added that he needs to stay on his grind until he can stack paper like Drizzy. “I was looking on the Internet and [saw] that [Drake] made $10 million this year,” Khalifa said. “So maybe when I make $10 million, then we can tour.” The MC added that while he won’t be an official Nightmares act, he may make a special appearance in certain cities. “We can do like some special dates or some surprise guest-type thing, but I need 10 mil too, Drake,” Khalifa said, ribbing the Toronto lyricist. Jim Carrey To Bring Classic ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ To Big Screen

Film will be upscale adaptation of popular children’s book. By Kara Warner Jim Carrey Photo: Todd Brown/ MTV News The last time Jim Carrey lit up the big screen, he did so as four different CGI characters in Disney’s animated “A Christmas Carol” reboot. Now, in addition to the recently announced project “Pierre, Pierre,” with “Bruno” director Larry Charles, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has lined up the funnyman to star in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” based on the classic children’s book of the same name. The film adaptation is said to be an upscale spin on the book, with Carrey in the role of the titular Mr. Popper, now a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As Popper becomes increasingly attached to his feathered friends, his life unravels and you guessed it wackiness ensues. According to the script synopsis, Popper’s swanky apartment turns into a winter wonderland, and he almost lands in jail. “But thanks to his new charges,” the logline reads, “Popper comes to understand the importance of family human and otherwise.” Fans of the book, written by Richard and Florence Atwater, will note that this proposed film version is a departure from the 1938 original, in which Popper is a poor housepainter who receives the surprise gift of a penguin by mail after writing into a radio broadcast hosted by Antarctic explorer Admiral Drake. Eventually, one penguin turns into 12, and in order to support their expansive brood, the Poppers train the penguins to perform. Perhaps Carrey can convince the filmmakers to reintroduce the painter aspect of Popper’s character, given the actor’s newfound passion for painting, which he has been chronicling via his Twitter account. No word on when production is scheduled to begin, but Mark Waters (“Mean Girls” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles”) is set to direct. Jason Derulo Recalls ‘Embarrassing’ Ride On ‘When I Was 17’

Singer talks about his car, nicknamed ‘The White Jellybean,’ in the episode premiering on MTV this Saturday at 11 a.m. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jason Derulo Jason Derulo is riding high with two MTV Video Music Awards nominations and hit songs like “Whatcha Say” and “In My Head” under his belt. But before the Moonmen nods and chart-topping tracks, Derulo’s ride was a major problem. “Everybody else had nice cars, so my dad bought me this white Chevy. People would call it ‘The White Jellybean,’ ” Derulo says on the episode of “When I Was 17” that premieres on MTV Saturday (August 21) at 11 a.m. “[It was] very, very embarrassing.” One of Derulo’s pals, Frank, remembers the rising hitmaker’s vehicle failed to strike a chord with the ladies. “I know girls were not impressed by this car,” Frank says. The Florida native, who was 17 in 2006, recalls that his raggedy wheels put his chances with one lady in jeopardy. “I can remember one time I took this girl on a date and I picked her up in this car. I could tell she was a little surprised [because] I didn’t have any air conditioning. I put the windows down, like this [makes hand-cranking motion],” Derulo says. “We’re good, we’re flowing, we’re riding.” But the singer’s smooth drive didn’t last long. “Suddenly I hear it go ‘boom, boom, boom, boom.’ I just try to keep going. We’re still riding … but I know that we got a flat tire,” Derulo recalls. Trying to maintain one’s cool while tooling around with a busted tire is already a challenge. And the singer was faced with an even bigger problem: “But I also know [that] I don’t know how to change the tire.” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV. Lindsay Lohan May Have Prescription To Blame For Drug Problems

Adderall may have exacerbated any existing issues, expert says. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: OutOfSightMedia/ Getty Images It may turn out that the disease that troubled actress Lindsay Lohan isn’t suffering from is the one that could have caused many of her recent problems. According to TMZ , the doctors at the UCLA rehabilitation facility where Lohan is currently 19 days into a court-ordered, 90-day inpatient stay reportedly believe that the “Mean Girls” star was misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and that the commonly prescribed drug used to treat that disorder, Adderall, may have caused her to exhibit the irrational, manic symptoms similar to those of someone abusing cocaine or methamphetamine. Lohan’s lawyer has not returned requests for comment from MTV News, but Dr. Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist and leading expert on the dangers of the over-prescribing of psychiatric drugs, said it doesn’t really matter if Lohan, 24, was misdiagnosed or not. “Whether or not she was misdiagnosed, [Adderall] will have the same effect,” said Breggin, the author of “Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Crime,” who has not treated Lohan and does not have first-hand knowledge of her case. “It’s a myth that it will have a different effect whether you have ADHD or not,” he explained. “If she was given Adderall, it’s entirely possible she would have a reaction that was indistinguishable from that of methamphetamine or cocaine, including producing manic or psychotic behavior.” While Adderall has helped many teenagers and adults suffering from ADHD gain control of their lives, Breggin said it is possible to become addicted to the drug, which, at high doses can cause out-of-control episodes. Add in an addiction to or chronic use of cocaine and other stimulants and, he said, that person could very easily be susceptible to the abuse of Adderall. “Adderall is pure amphetamine and it changes the neurotransmitters in a similar fashion [as other stimulants],” he said, noting that research in humans and animals has shown that the effect on those vital neurotransmitters is to make the person crave stimulants. “You don’t want to give someone an amphetamine who has or had a craving for methamphetamine or cocaine.” While Lohan has never discussed what issues have sent her to rehab three previous times, she has a history of arrests for drunk driving , including one in 2007 during which police allegedly found a packet of cocaine in her pocket. “You would not want to give anyone, for any purpose, Adderall if they were known to abuse methamphetamine or cocaine. You’re just setting them up for being hooked on Adderall,” Breggin said. Before she went to jail, it was revealed that among the prescription medicines Lohan was taking was the sleep aid Ambien, which didn’t surprise Breggin. “Ambien is sold for insomnia, but it’s a sedative and you use it to come down,” he said. “It’s common to go from a stimulant to a sedative to try to control the experience of going up and down.” Before her pair of DUI arrests in 2007, Lohan was often been spotted drinking late into the night. Breggin said that also didn’t surprise him, since alcohol, like Ambien, is a sedative used to counteract stimulation. The upshot of the alleged misdiagnosis, according to TMZ’s unnamed source familiar with Lohan’s treatment at UCLA, is that the former judge in Lohan’s case, Marsha Revel, may have “overreacted” when she ordered the actress to serve 90 days in rehab. The site claimed that Lohan has been weaned off all the medications she was taking — which also included the serious pain medication Dilaudid, antidepressants Zoloft and Trazodone, and acid-reflux treatment Nexium — with no adverse reaction. She has also reportedly not shown symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. With all that in mind, the new judge in the case will meet with lawyers next week to discuss a possible early release for Lohan from in-patient. T.I. Discusses His Teaching Stint On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

MC taught a class to fellow inmates called ‘Self Enrichment.’ By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Lester Cohen/ Getty Images T.I. has been evasive in interviews when discussing his jail sentence for felony weapons charges, simply saying he did his time and now he’s back. But on Thursday (August 19) night, the rapper opened up a little bit more about his time behind bars during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Although he cracked plenty of jokes about his experience while incarcerated, he also revealed he taught a class called “Self Enrichment” to his fellow inmates. “In my stay there, while I was there, I just noticed that so many cats what I was around was like, ‘When I get out I don’t know what I’m gonna do,’ ” the Atlanta star said. Tip said he subsequently went to the warden and proposed the class, which he said he hoped would “change criminal ways of thinking.” Kimmel made a few cracks, asking if attendees had to take tests. Tip laughed, but the MC — who also mentored troubled youth as a part of his MTV series “T.I.’s Road to Redemption” — was serious about his message. “It was moreso an open coversation and just comparing points of perception and how you look at things in life,” he said. T.I. also spoke about his forthcoming album, King Uncaged . He confirmed that Kanye West, Young Dro, Mac Boney, and The-Dream would make the cut; recently he said that a previously discussed collaboration with Lady Gaga collaboration would be reworked , or perhaps scrapped entirely. Since December, he’s recorded over 100 songs that were contenders for inclusion on the album. Related Artists T.I.

Mariah Carey In The Running To Be ‘American Idol’ Judge

The singer ‘thinks it will be a good career move,’ source tells E! News. By James Montgomery Mariah Carey Photo: Timothy A. Clary/ Getty Images “American Idol” reportedly passed on Jennifer Lopez as a potential judge for its upcoming tenth season due to her extreme diva-tude. So naturally, the show’s next move would be to begin courting the only star on the planet who could definitely out-diva J.Lo: Mariah Carey. That’s according to E! News , which cites a source close to the negotiations as saying that not only is “Idol” seriously considering bringing in Carey as a judge, but that Carey is definitely interested in the idea. “[Mariah] wants it,” the source said. “She’s seen what ‘America’s Got Talent’ has done for [husband Nick Cannon] and she thinks it will be a good career move.” Earlier this month, Cannon told The Hollywood Reporter that Carey “would love to do” the show , adding that if “Idol” could accommodate her schedule, she would definitely consider signing on. The source told E! that there are still “several sticking points” that must be worked out before Carey can sign with the show, but added that Fox is optimistic that a deal can be struck. If Carey does reach an agreement, she’ll join lone remaining original “Idol” judge Randy Jackson and, reportedly, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler , who, according to “sources close to the singer,” inked a deal with the show on Wednesday. Of course, according to returning “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, Lopez isn’t out of the running yet, either. So, really, who knows what the judges’ table will look like next season? A rep for Carey could not be reached for comment by MTV News, and a spokesperson for 19 Entertainment told us that “producers have no comment.” If Carey doesn’t end up as a judge on “Idol,” the remainder of 2010 is still shaping up to be a big one for her. According to an executive at her label, Island Def Jam, MC will be releasing a new Christmas album on November 2, which will reportedly feature six new songs, plus covers and a new mix of her classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
