How Rock The Bells Tour Lineup Came To Fruition

‘It’s something you see classic rock bands do,’ tour organizer Chang Weisberg says of artists like Snoop Dogg playing their entire albums. By Shaheem Reid Snoop Dogg Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images When you initially looked at this year’s Rock the Bells Tour lineup , it seemed almost too good to be true. It’s not like fans didn’t have faith in the outing’s promoters, Guerilla Union — they’ve delivered time and time again. Acts such as Nas, Rage Against the Machine, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and two of this year’s headliners, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan , have all stepped foot on the main stage in the previous six outings of RTB. Still, the tour this year is more than historic. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime epic, as the artists are performing their classic albums in their entireties. Slick Rick has been performing his The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Rakim does Paid in Full, Lauryn Hill does selections from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as well as the Fugees’ The Score. Want more? KRS-One perform Boogie Down Productions’ Criminal Minded, the Wu do Enter the 36 Chambers, Tribe do Midnight Marauders and Snoop Dogg closes it out with Doggystyle. To see all of those classics, all of those LPs, which could easily make up a Best 10 Rap Albums of All-Time list, be performed within a 12-hour span, is absolutely surreal. The tour kicked off on Saturday night in San Bernardino, and for many fans, it was like seeing the soundtrack to their lives right in front of their faces. “This is something we had thrown around for a while,” Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union, the tour’s organizer and promoter, said last week in Los Angeles. “We’d been talking about it for awhile with the squad. It became a reality during last year’s Smoke Out [festival]. Cypress Hill did Black Sunday in it’s entirety for the Smoke Out. It went over so crazy, that was the solidifying moment when we said we’ve definitely gotta do this for Rock the Bells. We talked to managers and artists immediately, seeing if people were really into it. Any time you’re sitting around and talking about Rock the Bells, you’re talking about what these kids are dreaming about. It’s always a question, whose record is better? What’s a top five record? Who’s the top five MC? Then, when you throw it in all together and couple it with what are the most classic records of all time, it was undeniable. “It’s something you see classic rock bands do,” Chang added. “Like, you see Pink Floyd do The Wall. Or outside of the hip-hop genre, it’s something that might be a lot more common. Here, it’s an opportunity to do a whole new reign. Kids are already saying ‘we wanna see Illmatic or Paul’s Boutique. People weren’t thinking like that. As a promoter, I don’t think I’ve asked artists ‘Would you do this song?’ as opposed to ‘Would you do this whole record?’ Fortunately, we were close enough to these camps that they knew we were serious and it would be an amazing thing if we could pull it off.” Snoop Dogg, who’s the last act to perform every night on his year’s tour, says he was excited to be a part of this event. “I was a fan of KRS and Rakim and Eric B and Slick Rick. All the rappers that’s getting down before me and whatnot. I’m thinking I’m opening up for them,” Snoop, surrounded by Daz, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, DJ Battlecat, Warren G and RBX, said. “I grew up buying their records and being fans of theirs. It’s an honor to be on the same stage with them. When [Guerilla Union] asked, I said I’m rolling. They told me what it was. I said I don’t want to just get onstage and perform my album, I wanna make it an experience. I wanna bring out the theatrics to the album. Doggystyle is like a journey. I want people to see it and feel it and when they leave be like ‘We seen a movie.’ ” Snoop definitely goes hard in the paint with mini-movies, a live band and, of course, his crew from the album. Probably the most surprising act for people to see is Lauryn Hill. For the past decade, her music releases and stage appearances have been kept at a minimum. Chang says he and his company were lucky enough to have close ties with the music legend. “We were blessed in that we’ve worked with Lauryn for a number of years and we’ve stayed close with her and her camp,” he explained. “Ultimately, she’s in a space where she’s excited about music. Her children are old enough where she can hit the road comfortably. We are very fortunate she decided to do it. We always hold Lauryn as one of the best MCs of all time. It was awesome when she said she would do it. She sat with it for a while. At the end of the day, we were fortunate she agreed to do it.” As huge as the talent pool of this year’s Rock the Bells is, it originally had yet another timeless act scheduled for the tour. “The first confirmation for Rock the Bells, it’s no secret, it was Run-DMC,” Chang revealed. “We had Run-DMC doing Raising Hell. It was going to be Raising Hell at Rock the Bells. It didn’t work out, but fortunately [there were] enough other groups to pull off the vision that we felt comfortable with when we made our announcement.” Rock the Bells continued in San Francisco Sunday night, and this Saturday, the tour stops in New York. The last day of the tour is on Sunday in Washington D.C. Besides the pioneers on the main stage, the Clipse, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Immortal Technique and Yelawolf are among the acts appearing on the “Paid Dues” stage. 3OH!3 Re-Create The Internet On The Internet In New ‘Double Vision’ Video

Clip is complete with banner ads and an arrow scrolling down the page that is the video. By James Montgomery 3OH!3 in their video for “Double Vision” Photo: Photo Finish Records When we last saw the guys in 3OH!3 , they were going green-screen crazy in the video for “My First Kiss,” a clip that took their patented brand of anti-subtlety to newfound heights. Simply put, it was a video all about kissing. A lot of kissing. In their new video for “Double Vision,” they’ve ditched the digital effects and gone DIY, with a clip that re-creates the sprawling ephemera of the Internet with a bunch of man-made tricks. In a lot of ways, it recalls the work of Michel Gondry, who eschews big-budget effects in favor of in-camera trickery and rough-hewn, eternally moving set pieces. And really, did you ever think you’d see a time when 3OH!3 would be compared to a noted French auteur? Working with director Evan Bernard (he of the Beastie Boys lyrical shout-out and eye-catching clips like Green Day’s “Minority” and the Ben Folds Five’s “Army”), 3OH!3 have done something pretty great with “Double Vision,” and it’s no stretch to say it’s their shining moment, video-wise at least. Because aside from the concept itself — let’s remake the Internet using only stuff found at most Home Depots — there are at least a dozen moments in the clip that are genuinely clever, too: subtle touches like the arrow icon that continually scrolls the screen downward (it’s controlled by a long while pipe held off-camera) and the rainbow-colored loading wheel Sean Foreman picks up and spins (while he freezes in place). There’s the way the “live” footage is presented — as video clips that only spring to life when they’re “clicked” on — and a bit that pays homage to the now-famous “Daft Hands” YouTube clip (and I’m pretty sure they got the “Daft Bodies” girls to do it). And while, sure, the inclusion of those “Plenty of Fish” ads — last seen in Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video — is rather cloying, they’re at least done cleverly. And really, when you think about it, aren’t banner ads supposed to be annoying? (For maximum annoyance, Bernard should’ve cast some wenches to re-create those “Evony” ads.) So “Double Vision” works on many levels — it’s sort of “Inception-y” in that regard (the Internet … on the Internet) — and it’s because of all that wink-winkery that it works as well as it does. It’s a great concept, greatly executed. And it only proves that perhaps the guys in 3OH!3 would do well to show a little restraint now and then … a video doesn’t need hyper-color explosions and kissing co-eds to be successful. Though, for that to happen, they’d probably have to release a song called “Subtlety.” Who knows, maybe they’ll do it on their next record. What do you think of 3OH!3’s “Double Vision” video? Wale Returns To His Roots With More About Nothing Mixtape

‘I wanted to channel the Wale [that existed] before I ever signed a record deal,’ rapper tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Wale’s ‘More About Nothing’ Photo: Courtesy of Wale Main Pick Street King : Wale Holding It Down for : DMV Mixtape : More About Nothing Real Spit : Yes the tape was a trending topic on Twitter when it came out about a week ago, and Mr. Folarin says he got over 100,000 downloads in less than 90 minutes when it dropped. A nice little ego booster, but Wale says he still feels the same way about selling 28,000 the first week his LP Attention Deficit (2009) dropped. “It damages your pride, your ego, it makes you think you’re not doing something right,” said in his hometown of Washington, D.C. “I wanted to channel the Wale [that existed] before I ever signed a record deal.” Wale’s most critically acclaimed mixtape is 2008’s Mixtape About Nothing, so he wanted to take it back to his roots. He says he feels like he’s not signed. He’s hungry. “That’s why you hear that vigor and hunger in my voice while I’m rapping. I was trying to go super-crazy in the booth to let them know that the hunger is still there. It’s to my label, the fans, to the doubters. I’m trying to prove myself. A lot of people try to reinvent themselves. I’m trying to define myself. It’s almost like it was a rough draft of my mission statement before, but this is the final draft. If y’all didn’t know who Wale was before, you know now. And the play on Nothing is that a lot people are saying nothin’, but we’re saying somethin’ now.” He has a lot to say on a particular track called “The Friends ‘n’ Strangers,” where he addresses a certain “Man on the Moon.” And we don’t mean the VMA Moonman. MC thinking about lending his voice to the cartoon, which he is producing. By James Montgomery T.I. Photo: Brad Barket/Getty Images T.I. is still deciding on the final track list for his upcoming album King Uncaged — a rather daunting process, considering he recorded some 80 songs (including a track featuring Lady Gaga ) for the project. But that doesn’t mean he’s not working on other endeavors — like, for example, a cartoon. In an interview last week on Sirius’ Shade 45, Tip confirmed that he’s developing an animated series called “Lil Homies.” He’ll serve as a producer on the show, and he’s also considering lending his vocal talents to the project. “I’m actually working on a TV show right now as a producer,” he told Shade 45’s Angela Yee. “[It’s] a cartoon … called ‘Lil Homies.’ I may do, like, voice over [work] … like a narrator.” T.I. said that “Homies” still is without a network, but he’s pushing ahead with the series regardless, even saying that he’d use his producer clout to cast Yee as “a neighborhood freak.” If and when the series hits TV, Tip will join a long list of rappers who have crossed over to the animated world: Outkast’s Andre 3000, whose series “Class of 3000” ran on the Cartoon Network in 2006; T-Pain, who served as executive producer of (and lent his voice to) “Freaknik: The Musical” earlier this year; and Danger Mouse and MF Doom, who released an album and an EP (2005’s The Mouse and the Mask and ’06’s Occult Hymn ) that featured beats taken from Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” programming, and more than a few cameos by “Adult Swim” stars. Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For Twitter Crown

The singer shouts out her fans for making her the most-followed tweeter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News Lady Gaga’s millions of fans have another title to call their Mother Monster: Queen of Twitter. After steadily gaining on Britney Spears, who until recently was the most-followed user on the social-networking site, Gaga surpassed her fellow pop supernova over the weekend by landing over 5.7 million followers. At press time, Gaga’s Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga’s 5,635,460. When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of “monster” love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance. Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site’s familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers. “Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter,” said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. “I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen.” The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site. “May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting,” Gaga said wistfully. “May you never have carpal tunnel.” The “Alejandro” singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. “I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans,” Gaga said. “And I vow to always tweet and tweet again.” Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement. “Just remember that I love you,” Gaga said. “And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga Britney Spears

Faith Evans Arrested On Suspicion Of Drunken Driving

The singer was reportedly pulled over Saturday night in Los Angeles. By Mawuse Ziegbe Faith Evans Photo: Tiffany Rose/ WireImage Faith Evans was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving, according to the Los Angeles Times. Evans was taken into police custody at 10:40 p.m. at a checkpoint near Marina del Rey, Los Angeles Police Department’s Officer Cleon Joseph told the Times. The Associated Press reports Evans’ car was impounded and she was released on bail the following morning. The incident is not the singer’s first brush with the law. In 2004, Evans and her husband, Todd Russaw, were arrested in Atlanta on drug possession charges. Evans evaded jail time by entering a pretrial drug-abuse intervention program. She referenced the drama in her 2005 single “Again.” “In ATL, I caught a case/ And the media tried to say, I had a habit/ I couldn’t manage, and I’m throwing my life away,” Evans belts on the midtempo track. Evans first hit the scene as a signee to Diddy’s Bad Boy label and went on to pump out R&B hits such as “Love Like This” and “You Gets No Love.” Evans also married fellow Bad Boy artist Notorious B.I.G. and won a 1997 Grammy, along with Diddy and 112, for the Biggie-tribute song “I’ll Be Missing You,” in the wake of the iconic MC’s death. After parting ways with her longtime label and releasing the 2005 album The First Lady on Capitol Records, the singer took a break from the fame game to focus on her family. At the 2009 premiere of “Notorious,” the biopic about her late husband’s rise to hip-hop prominence, Evans told MTV News that while she didn’t have a record contract, she was looking to return to music. “I’ve been taking a lot of meetings, and I’ve been enjoying my freedom, not being tied down to anything other than my family. I’m ready to record again,” Evans said. “I’ve been hesitant to get into any type of record-deal situation. The offers have been coming in. Through the process of elimination, I’ll pick the one that’s right for me.” Related Artists Faith Evans

Betty White, Neil Patrick Harris Score Emmys

The stars snag Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday.
